Donna’s List of Natural Beauty Concoctions for Face & Hair

As many of you know, I use natural remedies on a regular basis and have shared some of them before but I thought I would share many of them in a list.

simple beauty

Donna Spangler simple beauty

I like to start out with an exfoliant.bowl-with-baking-soda-paste

Do you want to get your skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom? Nothing polishes the face better than the fine granules that baking soda is made of. I love to use this simple and inexpensive home remedy to smooth the skin, especially on the face. It’s quick and easy.donna-baking-soda-scrub

putting the baking soda paste on in a circular motion
It also travels well, dry in a sealed plastic baggy.

First, take a scoop of baking soda and add a small amount of water just enough to make a paste. Then, take the paste and put it on your face rubbing in a circular motion. Cover the whole face and stop when you feel that your face is fully cleaned and polished.

Lastly, run warm water and rinse. Make sure you get all the granules off.

Your skin will feel smooth and polished

Another natural exfoliant is honey. I keep a container in my bathroom so I can use it to wash my face when I take a bath or shower. It takes off the dirt and is a natural antibacterial. It does not strip the skin of natural oils and balances the skin. Even if the honey has started to turn more coarse and sugary I use it as it has a great exfoliant texture. In addition ,it is inexpensive!

Below are other options:

Banana oatmeal skin exfoliant

you can however leave it on overnight
repeat daily until redness goes away.

Tomato Facial
cut a tomato in half and rub the half all over the face in a circular motion
rinse with warm water and moisturize

STEM CELLS IN TOPICAL SKINCARE: HOPE OR HOAX?

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O.

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O.

What are Stem Cells? Stem cells are living cells that are undifferentiated. They’re a bit like the cells that start every embryo when the sperm and egg cells fuse. They contain all the DNA information to make an entire human being (or plant or other animal depending on the species). When embryos start to grow, most of their cells differentiated into things like skin cells, brain cells, heart cells, and all the other different organs in your body. While the cells in your skin have all the DNA material of the cells in your liver, the DNA code is expressed differently so you end up getting the different organs.

If a stem cell could reverse aging, why wouldn’t you do it?

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. is an Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine and anti-aging medicine. Proclaimed as the “The Stem Cell Guru” by the New York Daily News, Dr. Calapai is a leader in the field of stem cell therapy in the U.S. Dr. Calapai explains that, “Despite the fact that stem cell research is in its infancy, many cosmetics companies claim they are successfully using plant-based or human-derived stem cells in their anti-aging products. These claims run the gamut, from reducing wrinkles to repairing elastin to regenerating cells, so the temptation for consumers to try these products is intense.”

Why don’t stem cells in topical skincare work?

Dr. Calapai explains that, “The truth is that stem cells in skincare products do not work as claimed; they simply cannot deliver the promised results. In fact, they likely have no effect at all because stem cells must be alive to function as stem cells, and by the time these delicate cells are added to skincare products, they are long since dead and, therefore, useless.

Do Cosmetics Brands Ever Use Actual Human Stem Cells?

While there are a number of brands on the market touting the use of human stem cells, read the fine print. No cosmetic brand is currently using whole human stem cells. Instead, they are using human stem cell extracts. That one additional word is key, indicating that the formulations are based on growth factors

Why isn’t human skin like a plant?
There are also claims that because a plant’s stem cells allow a plant to repair itself or to survive in harsh climates, these benefits can be passed on to human skin. Dr. Calapai points out that, “How a plant functions in nature is completely unrelated to how human skin functions, and these claims are completely without substantiation. It doesn’t matter how well the plant survives in the desert, no matter how you slather such products on your skin, you still won’t survive long without ample water, shade, clothing, and other skin-protective elements.”

What about the buzz word “Peptides?”
Another twist on the stem cell issue is that cosmetics companies are claiming they have taken components (such as peptides) out of the plant stem cells and made them stable so they will work as stem cells would or that they will influence the adult stem cells naturally present in skin. In terms of these modified ingredients working like stem cells, “this theory doesn’t make any sense because stem cells must be complete and intact to function normally. Using peptides or other ingredients to influence adult stem cells in skin is something that’s being explored, but to date scientists are still trying to determine how that would work and how it could be done safely,” says Dr. Calapai. For now, companies claiming they’ve isolated substances or extracts from stem cells and made them stable are most likely not telling the whole story. Currently, there’s no published, peer-reviewed research showing these stem cell extracts can affect stem cells in human skin.

The Future of Anti-Aging Stem Cells According to Dr. Calapai
Stem cells are a promising technology for the future. And they may even be a great anti-aging treatment when the science catches up with the application. You will know when it is a real anti-aging treatment when the following things are true.

1. The stem cells are from humans (preferably yourself)
2. The stem cells are alive
3. The product is somehow delivered to your dermis (probably an injection)
4. The product is applied by a doctor

Argan Oils for Hair and Skin is a Moroccan Heritage

387867_5a8a2293a22343ffb96a67b78725c5d2-1

I recently had the opportunity to try a very luxurious skincare line, Moroccan Heritage. The majority of products in the Moroccan Heritage skincare line consists mainly of various types of oils. Each product is formulated with Vitamin E, Antioxidants, Essential fatty acids and Moroccan Essential oils. The unique blends of Pure Organic oils, Moisturizing Oils, Argania Spinosa Kernal Oils, Barbary Fig Seed Oil (Prickly Pear Seed Oil) and Opuntia Ficus Indica Seed Oils makes this skincare line amazing. I especially like the fact that Moroccan Heritage Skincare is an extremely versatile skincare line where the products can serve multiple purposes. This is an added convenience and a unique one as well.

As stated on their website,  “Moroccan Heritage™ is a beauty and skin care brand created from all natural Moroccan ingredients and century old beauty and skincare practices and traditions.Moroccan Heritage truly lives up to its name as most of the skincare line is manufactured in Morocco.

One of my favorites is the Orange Blossom Water,  a 100% Pure Organic Facial Toner. It is refreshing and invigorating to your skin. I imagine that this will be a staple for me in the summer months. Orange Blossom Water has a light citrus scent and any impurities that are left on your face after cleansing are sure to be removed after its use. I can’t wait to add Orange Blossom Water  to my bath water. You can also add it to your favorite Clay Mask like Ghassoul Clay.

Unlike most skin care, you only need a few small drops of Barbary Fig Seed Oil to moisturize your face and neck for ultra soft and moisturized skin. It won’t feel oily at all. Barbary Fig Seed Oil is an anti-wrinkle oil and works wonders on cuticles, hands and your body.

Argan Oil, another one of my favorites is perfect for your entire body. After applying on my body, I rub a little in my scalp and hair which helps if you have a dry scalp. With this dry cold winter we are having here in New England this year, any moisturizing I can get on my scalp the better. You will also be treating your cuticles and hands. Try covering your feet with socks after applying this therapeutic oil to your heels. You will be amazed at the results. I’ve also noticed immediate results after massaging the Argan Oil on my forearms and legs. They are the driest parts of my body and now they are the softest.

You might be thinking, OK, I don’t want to feel oily or spend time waiting forever to get dressed after applying the oil. That is not the case at all. The only time spent is the time it takes to treat your body to a pure Moroccan Heritage experience.

Revitalize your skin with Silk’n ReVit

2650392_fpx.tif

There is one thing I have learned from reviewing various kinds of skin care, and that is, you rarely see immediate results. I have gotten immediate results from moisturizers as far as the softness of the skin is concerned. However, when you are dealing with fine lines, wrinkles, texture and tone, you do need to be consistent with a skincare product before giving it the boot. The same rule applies to skincare devices. I have been using a device called Silk’n ReVit, a DIY Microdermabrasion tool for a little over a month now and it’s a great skincare device, one that I am starting to see results with. It’s the perfect tool because you can use it in your home and take it on the go.

Silk’n ReVit is a microdermabrasion tool which gently exfoliates your skin, removing damaged and dead skin cells. It’s a hand held device making it easy to store because of it’s size. As you can see from the photo above,  Silk’n ReVit comes with three tips, Coarse for heavy exfoliating; Medium/Fine for gentler treatments,  especially for sensitive areas and Precision/ Fine for small or hard to reach areas. The Medium tip is working wonders around and under my eyes.

IMG_2195

The Results? With continued use of Silk’n ReVit, you will improve the texture of your skin, and soften the look of wrinkles, scars, age spots and acne scars.

The treatment only takes a few minutes and you will see the exfoliation results when replacing the disposable felt tip located inside the device (see photo above). You will see the damaged skin cells that have been removed using Silk’n ReVit’s vacuum stimulation process. Remember to place a new round felt (included) in your device before each treatment. Silk’n ReVit’s diamond peeling tips are the magic behind this fabulous tool.

I have noticed a smooth texture to my skin and smaller pores but don’t just take my word for it. I have been using this tool on a family member for the same amount of time and just a few day ago the comment from him, yes, the person is a male, is that his face feels and looks so much better.

Treat your face after cleansing with water and follow the instructions in the manual. Simply brush your skin in gentle motions for best results. Treat each area for up to 5 minutes. Wash your face after your treatment with cold water and follow up with a moisturizer. An SPF30 sunscreen is also recommended to protect your skin in between treatments.

What is nice about Silk’n ReVit is that it can be used every 3-4 days, and each session typically lasts 10-15 minutes. You don’t have to treat your face everyday to get amazing results.

Eye-Cream-02-640x640-1

The perfect moisturizer to use around your eyes is Silk’n Eye Cream with Squalane. This eye cream is designed to use around your eyes after your microdermabrasion treatment. Silk’n Eye Cream with Squalene will help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles.  According to Silk’n, this eye cream is “Specially designed to protect the delicate area around the eyes, Silk’n Eye Cream is effective, fast-absorbing and instantly hydrates the skin.” What is nice about this eye cream is that it absorbs quickly and you can apply makeup right after applying your eye cream.

The magic behind Silk’n Eye Cream is the combination of Persian Silk Tree extract and Asteraceae Siegesbeckia Orientalis Extract to gradually lift the eyelids, creating a more youthful and vibrant appearance. Persian Silk Tree extract is known to protect skin cells and aid in the fight against glycation. This helps combat the sagging effect of droopy eyelids.  Squalane is also used to stimulate collagen and effectively strengthen skin.

Silk’n Eye Cream is Paraben free and can be used daily.
