Rock your Posture

When it comes to looking your best, a small change can often make a huge difference. Correct posture is of utmost importance when you want to look good and manifest self-assurance to the rest of the world. If you want to rock your look then start with good posture.

Standing up straight projects a strong sense of self. It gives you an exquisite appearance. It is also sexy to have good posture. People with great posture are the kind of people others want to be around — and want to be.
If you slouch, stop. Get into the habit of walking erect, as if a string is pulling your head from the top. It might be tough, or feel strange or uncomfortable at first. But soon your body will adjust.

The truth is, poor posture can lead to problems down the road. Slouching can create a rounded back and shoulders, and lead to long-term pain and degradation of connective tissue through misalignment of the vertebrae and the interspersed necessary vertebral disks. A rounded back projects low self-esteem, as well as poor physical health and fitness. It also makes one look old.

I have a young friend who hunches over, which makes her come off as if she is withdrawn and tired, and lacking in self-worth. It makes her stomach pouch out. Standing tall — a small change — would make a huge difference in her overall appearance.

Good posture will help you ooze confidence and youth. In addition, it helps with proper breathing, improves circulation, instantly slims you, enhances the health of your spine and eases your muscles and joints. Plus, it totally changes your frame of mind. When I stand tall, I feel like I can take on the world. So I strut my stuff.

Look at yourself in a full-length mirror, or in the reflection of a window as you walk down the street. Now, pull your shoulders back. Make a conscious effort to stand and sit straight. It may take some time, but you will eventually have strong, correct posture that make you look and feel healthy, happy and confident.

Just take a look at any of the celebrities on the red carpet and you will notice how they project themselves with good posture.

Donna’s List of Natural Beauty Concoctions for Face & Hair

As many of you know, I use natural remedies on a regular basis and have shared some of them before but I thought I would share many of them in a list.

I like to start out with an exfoliant.bowl-with-baking-soda-paste

Do you want to get your skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom? Nothing polishes the face better than the fine granules that baking soda is made of. I love to use this simple and inexpensive home remedy to smooth the skin, especially on the face. It’s quick and easy.donna-baking-soda-scrub

It also travels well, dry in a sealed plastic baggy.

First, take a scoop of baking soda and add a small amount of water just enough to make a paste. Then, take the paste and put it on your face rubbing in a circular motion. Cover the whole face and stop when you feel that your face is fully cleaned and polished.

Lastly, run warm water and rinse. Make sure you get all the granules off.

Another natural exfoliant is honey. I keep a container in my bathroom so I can use it to wash my face when I take a bath or shower. It takes off the dirt and is a natural antibacterial. It does not strip the skin of natural oils and balances the skin. Even if the honey has started to turn more coarse and sugary I use it as it has a great exfoliant texture. In addition ,it is inexpensive!

 

Below are other options:

Banana oatmeal skin exfoliant
mash a banana with a small amount of oatmeal
blend well and apply to face for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water

Banana Peal acne relief
use the peal of a ripe yellow or yellow/ brown banana
put the inside part of the peal to the face where you have acne problem
rub over area for about 10 minutes till inside turns brown
leave it on an do not wash off for about one hour till you go to bed
you can however leave it on overnight
repeat daily until redness goes away.

Tomato Facial
cut a tomato in half and rub the half all over the face in a circular motion
rinse with warm water and moisturize

For a sunburn
tomato juice and /buttermilk delight
2 parts tomato juice and 4 parts buttermilk
mix together then put on sunburn let it stand for 30-40 minutes rinse

Facial MASKS

Sweet Banana Yogurt Mask
banana
yogurt
honey

Sweet Strawberry Honey Mask
3-4 small mashed strawberries
2tbl yogurt
1-2tbl honey
Combine ingredients put on face for 20minutes and rinse with warm water

Sweet Blueberry nourishing mask
1/4 cup Blueberries
1tbl honey
1tsp olive oil
mash berries add honey and oil and put on for 10 minutes rinse off with warm water

Hair Remedies

Vinegar rinse-
wash hair and rinse with 1/3 cup vinegar and ? cool water

Rich Avocado treat
mash and avocado and add 1/2 cup olive oil blend well
apply the mixture to your hair wrap up in a towel for 20-30 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Deep conditioning Cucumber
1 egg
1/3 cucumber blended
1/4 cup almond oil
mix above ingredients well and apply to the hair for 20-30 minutes and rinse well with warm water

Healthy Hair Beer Rinse
take any type of beer at room temperature and rinse it onto your hair after it has been cleaned. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse well so there is no beer smell. It will leave the hair shiny and healthy looking.

Honey Avocado Hair repair
2tb honey
one egg yolk
2tbl olive oil
mix ingredients and slather over the hair let stand for 20-30 minutes then rinse with cool water

Overnight Coconut oil treatment
put on the coconut oil on scalp and hair before bed. Wrap up Wash it out in the morning.
This treatment can be done a few times a week.

Rock that Holiday Look

Think costume theatrical. The classic theme for the holidays is festive, so it’s a great time to dress up and celebrate. Be daring, and have fun with colors and makeup.

Choose sparkling, bright sequin dresses in reds, pinks, silvers, greens and blues. I found a great pink sequin dress that I only paid $10 for at a discount store. I kept it in my closet just so I could wear it during the holiday season.

If you are more conservative, classic black always provides a classic, subtle and polished look.

Either way, the key to rocking any dress is making sure it fits properly. It should be tight enough to show off your assets — yet not so tight as to pull or make you look like a stuffed sausage.

Your makeup should be complimentary, with a strong emphasis on the eyes, especially for an evening event. Always apply eyeliner and mascara; you can even add some shimmer or sparkles.

Just remember to blend and keep both sides symmetrical. Play around with your lips. I always choose a darker color with a light color over the lips, especially if you opt for a dramatic look on the eyes.

I have discovered first hand that coconut water is great for the skin. I got several cartons of it on sale recently and have been drinking it like regular water. I am more hydrated as it contains electrolytes to hydrate. After 3 weeks I did notice a difference. I went through about 6 cartons of ZICO coconut water. You can use any brand but make sure that there is no added sugar.   I have eye makeup in above picture but very little base and could tell there was a difference.

It has been said that a woman’s hair is her crowning glory and I agree. Hair is VITAL for a female. Thick, long healthy hair exemplifies youth. The length and style signify clues to your age, health and overall attractiveness. The key to hair is to try and make it appear as healthy as possible. This can be accomplished by taking the proper vitamins, proper conditioning and regular trims and covering any grays.  Also a deep conditioning monthly is recommended especially in summer months.

Internally is where you must start to build great hair. A vitamin such as Biosil will benefit your hair, skin and nails.  Christy Brinkley recommends this product and I have followed in her steps.

It is said to promote healthy bones and joints as a side bar plus. I also eat jello which has a lot of protein.

Bad hair can be a huge detriment to a woman’s look. If your hair is less than healthy looking, you can add extensions, wig lets or a wig. A lot of celebrities and models utilize these options. When I go on stage, I love extensions that clip in. I even have wigs when I want dramatically different looks. Clip on extensions are fairly easy to put on. You need to match the color as close as possible. Start at the bottom of your head and clip in the first row of hair. make another row an inch or two above that from one end of your ear to the other and clip in another row as so on. the last row should be put on top but having enough hair on top so that you are unable to see the extension. If you need side extensions you can attach those as well for desired styles. After that brush lightly at ends and style with your fingers. Extensions give length and or volume. I am not a fan of permanent extensions as i feel that they ultimately damage the hair. The clip ins should be taken out before you go to bed. Wig lets can be clipped on also as well as pony tails. The key is to blend your natural hair into the style. If you wear a wig this is not necessary. Get a wig cap, some bobby pins and place the wig cap on. When it is secured place the wig on your head. Secure the wig to your head and you are good to go. Make sure none of your natural hair is poking out.

Flat irons and curling irons can create dramatically different looks. Curls tend to be viewed as very feminine. The flat iron can make hair smooth and take away frizz. I find that when I get a blow out I can then do either curls or smooth depending on the look I’m attempting to attain.
If you wear hair spray, make sure it is light and doesn’t stick in place. Too much hair spray is often associated with old ladies and it’s just wrong. Stiff hair that doesn’t move isn’t attractive.
Long hair is sexy and can help you look more glamorous. Short hair works for some people, but make sure it is not too short. The finer your features and the thinner and younger you are, the easier it is to pull off short styles. If you are overweight — don’t go too short.
Now let’s delve into hair color and roots. In life we have to brush our teeth, floss, shave, clean ourselves, etc., and when someone lacks the motivation to do these things, they start to deteriorate their self-presentation. Keeping up with your hair is the same thing. There is nothing worse than a girl with roots. Not only do long dark roots look cheap, but they convey a lazy attitude and lack of interest in presenting one’s self in the best way possible.

Some hair issues are harder to take care of than others. Hair color is important and can affect your beauty routine depending on how much maintenance it requires. Remember if you choose a color that is difficult to maintain, it could wreak havoc on your hair if it has to be done too often. Damaged hair is not attractive.

Curly hair can be especially hard to deal with, and this one I know firsthand! It can get frizzy and look unkempt depending on the weather and texture of your hair. Curly hair needs lots of conditioning.

Home remedies for great hair are wonderful. You will find many examples in my chapter specifically devoted to practical applications using items you have in your home. Healthy smooth hair is a sign of beauty. It is important to protect it through good diet , vitamins if necessary and regular conditioning treatments. It is not necessary to wash your hair every day. I usually go a week without washing my hair, but if your hair gets greasy fast then of coarse you may not be able to go that long. If your hair is curly then it will need extra care as it can get frizzy and dry. If it is color treated then it will also need more conditioning especially if it is bleached. I recommend deep conditioning treatments whenever your hair needs it. Here are some home remedies that you can use for your hair. Washing your hair- If your hair is very dirty you can add baking soda to your shampoo. If you want to go chemical free then you can make a paste out of baking soda and massage it into your head or you can get a cup of water and put one table spoon baking soda and stir then massage that into your head to clean it. After that rinse and put 2 tablespoons spoons of apple cider vinegar to one cup warm water and let it sit for a few minutes. After that rinse.
It is important to comb hair gently with a wide tooth comb. You do not want to yank it. The hair should be combed at the ends and work your way up to detangle after washed.

I keep my hair on the longer side so that it does not kink up. After a good wash, always comb your hair right away. If you put product in it and work it through with your head upside down and scrunch it with your hands it can make nice natural curls. Do not brush it. For smooth styles it pays to go to a blow dry bar. I can leave my hair for a week with a professional blow dry. The other option is Brazilian Blow out. My friend actress business woman Esther Marie is always on the go and loves this option. It makes her hair smooth and shiny. She says its easy to maintain.

If your hair is wavy or straight, a professional blow out can be nice to put body in the places that you want it. Blow dry bars have become very popular. They specialize in blow drying and styling hair, are much more cost effective than full service salons and offer great service. Their employees are quite skilled at doing a great job. As a rule a person cant do as good of a job on their own hair than these people can. The hair comes out smooth and nice and tends to stay that way unless it gets wet. If you aren’t going in for a cut or color but just want a stunning style, opt for a blow dry bar!

Sometimes getting your hair done professionally is not an option so use these tips for the best blow out you can give yourself.
When blow drying your own hair, spray on a heat protector first. If you have curly hair you will need to put some tension on the brush and make sure the hair is completely dry so it does not frizz up! Section off the hair and dry each piece separately until the whole head is dry.

Donna’s Diaries- My hair is naturally curly so it takes some work to make it behave and keep it properly conditioned. I really like to spend my money on my hair including professional deep conditioning at a salon but you can do this yourself at home also.

Styles

It is important to have a style that suits your personality, but it should also be current. Since a mane of hair can make all the difference in your look, it is important to make time for regular trims. Sometimes it is fun to try on wigs of various colors and styles to see what looks best on you. I even think it is fun to have wigs to wear on those days that you want a totally different look. Beauty is all about putting things together to make the style and look that best fits you. Don’t make drastic changes! Always experiment slowly. But if you do make a mistake, there are always extensions…

There are many different types of hair extensions that can look quite beautiful when added to the natural hair; however, this choice is high maintenance and usually very expensive. The plus side is you can shower with them in and carry on as if they are part of your natural hair. The downside is that it sometimes causes damage to your natural hair. This can result in breaking and potential hair loss.

Today, we have many choices when it comes to clip-ons and hair pieces, which can create a quite glamorous look when added to our natural hair. I like clip-ons because they are easy and low maintenance. I use them to enhance my natural hair when I want more dramatic styles. They do not damage your hair, so they are essentially risk free. Plus, you can get top notch human hair clip-ons for a reasonable price. If you get synthetic ones they are not expensive and great for occasional use. DO NOT TRY TO CURL THEM WITH A HOT IRON! The manufacturer already has them straight or curled. They will melt if you try.FullSizeRender (3)

Natural hair clip on’s are wonderful but cost much more.  The bottom line is to make sure your hair is as healthy as you can get it to look and if it needs help then move forward with both internal and external choices. Do not ever leave clip ons on constantly. I wear mine for a night or day then remove them so my hair does not get pulled out.

How to Wear Perfume

Perfume is best worn on parts of the body where natural body heat will slowly release the perfume’s ingredients. Keep in mind that when it comes to your personal scent, less is more. Apply the perfume to dry, freshly showered skin. Avoid spraying perfume on clothing. To sustain the fragrance’s note, avoid rubbing the perfume into your skin.

Men and women have different body temperatures, therefore fragrance placement will be different for each gender.

Hot Zone – Men produce more heat near the lower jaw, neck, and shoulders. Women produce more heat behind the ears, neck, and chest.  Placing perfume in these regions will allow for the scent to release more quickly.

Warm Zone – Men tend to have less heat generation near their chest and wrist. Women produce less heat on their shoulders, wrist, and behind the knees. Dabbing some perfume in these regions will help the scent last longer with a slower release time.

Medium Zone – The inner elbow and forearm are the coolest regions on a man’s extremities. Women tend to have a lower body temperature on their inner elbow, below their midriff, calves and ankles.  Applying a touch of fragrance in these areas will help the scent linger.

Perfume Wearing Tips

Summertime is the best time to wear soft fragrances comprised of fresh herbs, citrus and florals.

It is advisable to have an everyday scent for work, outdoor events, shopping or holidays.

Don’t overuse perfume, especially in the summer, as less is more when it comes to the use of fragrances. In addition, the summer heat and the heat of your body can significantly change both the power of the fragrance as well as the actual scent. In the summer you might want to consider applying perfume to non pulse points, as those are typically cooler than the pulse point areas (which are warmer due to the blood flow). Avoid wearing fragrances in direct sunlight, as some ingredients will react to ultra violet rays and affect scent notes that can not only change the fragrance, but also irritate or stain your skin.

Ageless-Maintaining your Youth and Enhancing your Beauty

7K3A6506 (1)Although a positive attitude is the most important aspect in maintaining beauty and health.  I will be telling you my rules on the physical aspects of ageless beauty that I always live by.

I just turned 53 so I am all about maintaining youth and beauty and I can’t stress enough how important a regular beauty regiment is which should be a part of the way you live your life so that you can maintain your youth and beauty, for the many years to come.

As we age things happen to every part of our body, its just a fact of life. The key is to try and slow the process down and in many cases, improve upon it. This can be accomplished by being faithful to living as clean of a life as possible and having a regular beauty regimen that you stick to each day.

CUT OUT BAD HABITS – This means cutting things out like smoking or being around those who smoke. Smokers get more wrinkles. This may be difficult if you have any smokers around you but smoking is one of the worst culprits for aging not to mention it causes cancer.

Other bad habits such as excessive drinking of alcohol should be sworn off. Of course an occasional drink is fine but too much rapidly ages your skin, since alcohol dries out the skin itself.

Clean Food- Keep your body healthy. Make sure you eat lots of healthy foods and vegetables. It is important to try to use vegetables that don’t have pesticides because of there strongly possible poisonous content. Growing a garden this is ideal, but for most people it is impossible. Most of us will just have to get the best option such as going to the Sunday farmers market or to a vendor that sells vegetables that are grown pesticide free.

Cut sugar intake- Sugars in excess cause a multitude of problems and should be limited. Occasional limited sugar or natural sugar like fruit is the best option.

Cut Stress- Stress reduction is a must in terms of keeping yourself looking and feeling young. Stress also contributes to a plethora of illnesses as well as reducing the required defense of your immune system.

Even having a pet can help help reduce stress. If you have an animal spend time stroking and loving it. Studies show this this helps reduce stress and anxiety.

Get plenty of rest so that your system keeps an even healthy balance. If you cannot sleep try getting more exercise during the day and try doing exercises like yoga. Any type of exercise is great though. Find something that you enjoy doing which invites restful sleep at night. workout

When I am stressed I take a hot bath which relaxes me. I add olive oil or coconut oil to help my skin. Dimming the lights or turning off the light and burning a candle or candles also helps a great deal to relax.

Morning routine- In the morning make sure your face is clean. Put your favorite moisturizer on when it soaks in then use an SPF of 15 or higher to protect your face and neck. Now a days many of the base makeups have an SPF. This is one of the most important steps to protect you from the damaging rays of the sun. Re apply ever few hours. If you are in direct sun you may even want to wear a hat.

Also don’t forget to apply to you body the moisturizer and an SPF for any exposed body parts. Aging takes place over the whole body so do not ignore pampering and protecting it.DSC_8863

Teeth- The mouth and the face are the first things that other people look at. Teeth are a strong indicator of beauty and health.

Floss after breakfast to release the food that is automatically impacted beneath the gums which house the bacteria that cause not only bad breath but also feeds bacteria to cause multiple serious diseases throughout the entire body. Additionally, it is easy for others to see when the mouth and smile have not been taken care of. Yellow or brown teeth and bad looking gums age a person greatly. If you want to maintain your youth and beauty please floss and brush after every meal and especially before bed.

Vitamins- Because I work out hard, I like to take a multiple vitamin to ensure I am getting all I need for my body.

Night routine- At night, before bedtime is a great time to help your body, since it repairs itself at its best when you are sleeping, so that any preparation at night will aid in optimal repair.

Skin- At night exfoliate your skin with a gentle cleanser or wash with honey. Put on a moisturizer. I also use retinol cream to finish. I use it a few times a week and only a pea size for my whole face and neck. Put a light moisturizer on your body at night as well.

Lashes- For my Lashes I use Revitalash every night as it works well and having long thick lashes is a sign of youth and beauty. This is most important as lashes tend to lessen as we age. There are other lash products on the market so find one that works for you if you want to maintain a beautiful full set of lashes.

Hydration- Before bed drink some water. This is very important and your body will love you. Fill up a glass of water and have it near your bed so if you get thirsty you can drink it throughout the night. Hydration will aid in keeping your body looking and functioning its best. I use purified water.

teeth- brush and floss. You can also do a teeth whitening when you feel you need it to keep those pearly whites. There are many brands available.

If you follow all these rules then you should be well on your way to maintaining your youth and beauty.

Holiday time is perfect for the celebration of togetherness and nothing brings a family closer than decorating the living space.
There are so many ways to decorate with many options. Get the kids together and give them craft supplies to make decorations. Assign a space that they can decorate any way they see fit. Take out all the old decorations and lay them out. My favorites place to get inexpensive decorations is the 99 cent store or the dollar store. Tinsel can make a great supplement for that holiday feel. You can also make large candy wrappers with old tubes of toilet paper or paper towels after they are done and cover them with any colored paper or material and tie them off at each end.

Also food like stringed popcorn and hanging candy canes can be used for holiday
also baking cookies and decorating them then displaying them on plates gives the family a sense of warmth.
So get together with your family and decorate this holiday season.

The Importance Of Rest And Taking Time Of Yourself

You know some times we forget how far we as women have come. We have not always been seen as equals to men in terms of politics, voting, job oppurtunities and countlesss other things. Over the past few decades we have made significant strides towards gaining our own independence. Instead of simply being house makers, now we are , business women, doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, along with being children bearers, mothers and spectacular wives. But how can we do all of that and maintain a healthy body?

The key is to TAKE CARE of our complete selves mind, body and spirit. No matter how busy your schedule is, it is imperative to workout at least 30 minutes a day. If you are not a fan of the gym, try taking your dog on a long walk or walking up and down your home steps 20-30 times. Try putting on some dance music while cleaning the house and letting your body move to the beat.

Whatever you decide to do, keep your body in motion. It’s not simply about having a slim figure. It is about your health, studies show that working out promotes a healthy heart, mind and spirit. If you work out for at least 30 minutes a day along with a well balanced diet you will see that you have a lot more energy to get through the day.

 Next thing, TAKE TIME FOR YOU. We as women as were born to nurture others, it’s in our nature. But all too often we forget to take care of the most important person… Ourselves. Be sure to take time every now and then to do something solely for you. Get your nails done, go to the spa, have a girls night out anything that you do make sure that it’s something you and you alone want to do.

Finally and most importantly REST. I can not stress to you the importance of beauty rest.

Not only is it amazing for your skin, but it imperative for your heart. Studies show that women who get 6-8 hours of sleep a night, live longer happier and healthier lives. Our bodies regroup  themselves while they are sleeping. Make sure you take the time to get some old fashioned beauty rest.

If you’ll do this you’ll see that your modern day superwoman cap with sore that much higher.

Remember that our minds, bodies and souls need us just like everyone else.

We are aren’t any good to anyone if we are tired.
