Fall into Shape

fall leaves

Fall is by far my favorite time of the year.  And since I’ve been spending more time on the east coast recently, I’m getting the chance to experience some REAL fall weather!  The only downfall to the colder weather for me is that I’m not always as motivated to work out.  Thank goodness I’ve come to learn that I’m not the only one who needs a little bit more of a push at this time of the year!

There are a lot of great bodies in Hollywood, but my friend Elizabeth Morrell is one of the MOST fit people I know….I’m mean, the woman actually has an EIGHT-pack…and an incredible story of how she got there. She’s also a fitness trainer and  the star of her own tv show Ms. Fit One.  So, I figured we could all learn a thing or two about keeping in shape at this time of the year from her. Here’s what she had to say:

Elizabeth Morrell

I am the new kid on the block, literally. I recently moved to Charlotte, North Carolina from Southern California where it is sunny all year long. I can ride my bike outside in any season, the weather is always beautiful – however Charlotte, not so much. I am not accustomed to this cold weather, yes, I said COLD…. to me, but cool to the natives. I guess I can’t stay bundled up under my warm blanket on my big comfy couch, I must find ways to stay in shape in cool weather.

It doesn’t matter if you are already in shape or trying to lose weight, here are a few great workouts for fall season. Spin class, yes, I still must get my ride on. Maybe I can’t ride with the wind blowing in my face but I can still get in my jumps, hills and sprints in a spin class. Spinning is one of the best ways to burn calories without all the pressure on your knees. You can burn up to 1,000 calories in a one-hour class.

I really don’t enjoy Yoga, I said it!! But it is an essential practice for the mind, body and spirit – though I admit I am a seasonal Yogi. When it’s cold outside, I seek warmth and why not get a good workout in a controlled heated environment. Hot Yoga calls my name in the fall. Yoga is so necessary for not only your body but your mind. It is a great way to increase strength, gain flexibility and tone your body as well as keep your mind centered and focused, all in one nice HOT place. Namaste.

 yoga

My favorite is resistance/strength/weight training, whatever you call it, (I am that chick in the weight room with the big boys). I love resistance training is all seasons. You can throw on your scarf, hat, coat and gloves and make it to your local gym or you can simply move your furniture around and get busy in the comfort of your own home. Resistance training is so important! It is not just for body builders! It improves muscle strength and tone; it boosts your energy, improves your mood, and increases your self-esteem. I can go on and on about the benefits of strength training but the bottom line is, pick up a pair of dumbbells, a resistance band and a ball and you have a total home gym.

There you have it three things you need to keep you in shape for the fall: Spin for cardio, it builds your endurance and burns fat. Hot Yoga, for your flexibility and focus and resistance training for building your muscle strength and overall total body wellness.

Check out your local fitness centers to find the nearest classes near you and fall into shape with me!

You can read more about Elizabeth Morrell in a recent article here in Courageous Women Magazine.

Don’t Skimp On Health Insurance With Cigna

Choosing a health plan is a major financial decision, yet a new Cigna survey found more than half of consumers don’t dedicate enough time to choosing a plan. In fact, more than half of the people surveyed said they spend less than an hour choosing health plans.

This does not to imply that people are not concerned about their health care. In fact, the survey uncovered major anxiety about financial health that goes far beyond making health plan choices this fall.

For example, the survey found:
• 75% fear health care costs could ruin prospects for a secure retirement
• 44% worry health care costs will limit ability to pay for a child’s college
• 80% say they wish “doing healthier things didn’t cost so much.”
What consumers may not realize is how health plans can help them with those challenges through useful resources and tools.

In this video Dr. Scott T. Josephs, Vice President and National Medical Officer of Cigna discusses this crucial survey. Dr. Josephs give us tips on choosing a health plan, and he can also discuss the link between health and financial security.

KMS California for Hair Your Way

tamingfrizz-taming-creme

Whether your hair is curly, thick, thin or frizzy, KMS California is up to the challange. With several different  hair types in my family, KMS California has something for each of us. I recently visited my daughter in college and noticed KMS California products on her bureau. I asked her what she thought about  the products, knowing that she is very fussy about the products she puts in her hair. I was relieved to hear that she loved them especially  KMS Tame Frizz. She likes products that control frizz and KMS Tame Frizz is working like a charm.

IMG_0245 - Version 3

KMS Tame Frizz does a great job controlling her uncontrollable frizzy hair especially when it’s raining, that’s when she needs it the most.  Tame Frizz also helps protect her hair from heat caused by her  blow dryer and flat iron. Tame Frizz is definitely a win win. She likes that you can apply Tame frizz to dry hair for extra control over those frizzy hair strands. She can’t wait to try the other KMS California frizz control products.

My daughter also told me I have to pick up more KMS Medium Hold Spray. “I really like it and I am using it all the time”. “It’s a great spray for the humidity and you don’t get that stiff  feel to your hair”. Your hair will feel extremely manageable and brushable. KMS Medium Hold Spray (in the blue can) also protects your hair from the heat. That is a big issue for her so she is happy with KMS California.

There are several Salons in New York City where she can pick up what she needs and to find a location near you, or simply get more information on other KMS Hair Care products, visit kmscalifornia.com

Love Your Fragrance With Onika by Nicki Minaj

If you love soft, delightful fragrances you will love Nicki Minaj’s new fragrance Onika. I have always loved any fragrance that is not overpowering but has enough scent to last all day. Onika is just that. With notes of Pear, star fruit, mandarin, water lily, orchid, osmanthus, sugar cane, white musk, and cedar wood, Onika is like walking through a garden. The first little spritz really opens your senses and goes a long way.

Named after herself, Nicki Minaj (born with the name Onika) released her new fragrance in July. Just like she was with her other fragrances, she was involved with the overall production right down to the design and promoting of the product. When I hear that about an artist it really shows us, the consumer, they really believe in what they do and sell. If you have loved Nicki’s other fragrances you will love this WAY more! I honestly think it is her best fragrance so far. It lasts all day and is great for women of all ages.

Now onto the packaging. Unlike any other fragrance bottle I have ever seen, Nicki Minaj really thinks outside the box when designing her bottles. Onika’s bottle main color scheme is black with a little gold accent. It is a bust of Nicki herself donning a black wig, black halter top and a gold plated face. It is definitely an eye catcher.

So if you are in need of finding your right fragrance and are unsure of where to start, look no further. Stop by your local fragrance counter and ask to sample Onika by Nicki Minaj. I have a strong feeling you will be walking out of the store with your very own bottle. You can find Onika at your local Macys, Belk, Dillard’s or any other fragrance store!

I know I always assumed it was “out with the summer colors” and “in with the fall colors”.  My summer colors are staying put, especially my butterLONDON ABBEY ROSE lipstick. While visiting New York City department stores this weekend, I was scanning the amazing make-up counters and immediately noticed that the bright Lipsticks are everywhere. Cut Your Blow Drying Time In Half With The Blo & Go

About 2 years ago while working behind the chair I noticed that my right wrist was feeling extremely weak and in a lot of pain every time I either picked up my shears or my blow dryer. As a professional stylist, my blow dryer tends to be a little heavier than an everyday blow dryer that can be found in your local supermarket. At home I use my lighter weight blow dryer but even that one enflames my wrist. I also do not enjoy doing my own hair. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago a good friend of mine introduced me to a product that made me happy to style my hair again. It is called the Blo & Go! A great product that helps those who are injured or may have arthritis have the freedom and ability to style their own hair again! Check out my how to video below on YouTube and check out www.bloandgo.com for more details and how you can get your very own!
