Keep Motions in Your Natural Curls

20150625_090240-1 (3)

In my day to day dealings I get asked all kinds of questions about my natural hair. How long have you been natural? How long does it take to do your hair? Is it a lot of work? What products do you use, and so forth and so on? Here are the answers; my whole life, it takes a while, not if you have the right products and the hair care line I use is Motions Hair Care. It has everything my hair needs to thrive in its natural state from my wash and go to my twist outs.

Motions hair careThe key to having healthy natural hair begins with clean moisturized hair. Motions Shampoo is a great start; it gets your scalp clean and eliminates the build up from all the products that we put on our hair daily. Motions Shampoo gets my hair thoroughly clean and ready to receive the conditioner to lock in that moisture my hair so desperately needs. Motions Conditioner is creamy, rich and simple to use. All you have to do is massage the conditioner from your roots to the ends of your hair for about 3-5 mintues then rinse. It makes my hair so soft and easy to detangle, which as every natural hair chick knows that detangling can be the most tedious part in doing our hair.

To ensure your hair stays conditioned and moisturized Motions Leave-In Conditioner and Hair Styling Cream combined with Motions Hair Oil is to die for! I just section my hair into four parts and then grease my scalp using the hair oil to stimulate my scalp and then use the leave-in conditioner (a little goes a long way). Once you put the leave-in conditioner on your hair and comb through you will notice right away how your curls will be full and bouncy! You can stop there with your wash and go and walk out knowing your natural curls are rocking. However, if you want to manipulate your curl pattern and style with a twist out or whatever style you like, simply start the styling process and let it dry. I don’t use heat so I usually let my hair dry overnight and take down the next day. I take down my twist out and spray my finished look with Motions Oil Sheen for that luxurious shine that leaves my hair light and flirty.

So if you are living the natural hair life or even thinking of it, check out www.Motions.com to get all you will need to let the world know that you love your curls as much as Motions Hair Care products do!

Effortless “Flower” hair from Butterfly Studio

The best summer hair accessory? Flowers! Take your hair to the next level by adding beautiful flowers. Try this effortless braided look from the owner of Butterfly Studio Salon, Kattia Solano. This style is ideal for any hair length and perfect for summer outtings. See below for a step-by-step hair tutorial.

Flower Hair

Flower Hair

How To: Flower Hair
1. First step: set the crown area with a small curing iron.
2. For the rest of hair, take random sections and simply wrap the hair vertically around the rod. This will give it a bit of wave and texture.
3. Spray with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray before you brush out for hold, grip, and a better style.
4. Softly brush out to amplify waves and enhance texture. (Don’t worry, we are not looking for perfection – think more along the lines of rolling around the garden instead!)
5. Braid hair over to one side and secure.
6. Open the braid and create a soft frame (wave/swoop) in the front.
7. Take your flowers and cut to desired length, keeping the stems long and choosing wider and fuller flowers.
8. Place the flowers by sticking into the braid and secure with a bobby pin.
9. Design your own way, follow your inspiration, and break the rules. An added idea to create a look with more drama is to apply flowers through the length of the braid.

Longer lasting color with “Gold”

You just got your hair colored. Its vibrant, crisp and beautiful but then you start to fear that in about week or so it will not look that way anymore. Well your fear is over when you use Goldwell’s Dual Senses Color Rich line of shampoo, conditioner, leave in spray and treatment. Every use makes it look like you just walked out of the salon.

Goldwell Color

Goldwell Color

Being a red head the worst part is knowing that my hair will fade a lot faster than most so anything I can do to make it last longer I did. After one use of the Dual Senses Color Rich, my color looked very refreshed and vibrant that it looked like I just had it done. At the time of my first use was 3 weeks after my color was done. You could seriously see all the different tones of red and just how hydrated my hair was.

The treatment, having a little red tint to it, gives the red a beautiful look but don’t freak if you don’t have red hair. This will not stain the hair. I have a few family members with blonde hair I have had try it and it made their blonde appear brighter. So if you are wanting to have beautiful, vibrant just out of the salon hair then check out www.goldwell.us for more info on where you can get your very own Goldwell Dual Senses Color Rich. Make everyday your red carpet!

Cleanse your hair with “Gold”

A shampoo & conditioner that does what they say! I had been using up shampoo & conditioner at home to not be wasteful. It really didn’t seem to be a problem until after I had some highlights put in my hair and spent a few days at the beach. The split end look arrived big time and it was definitely noticeable! I asked my “cosmetology” daughter what to do & she suggested Goldwell Dual Senses.

The first thing I noticed in using it was the wonderful light fragrance. It smelled a bit “fruity”, but not overwhelming; perfect! Then I noticed the texture of my hair was softer & it actually felt lighter. Now I was getting impressed. My hair in just a few short minutes smelled good and felt good. Wow! I couldn’t help but wonder if the disappointment was yet to come later. After my shower, I was anxious to get to my mirror to see how manageable my hair would be. First I noticed the ends actually looked better and when I ran a comb through, their was no tangles; that’s right, no tangles. The highlighted color looked great and showed no lightening or change in shade. So far, I thought this shampoo is perfect, but I didn’t want to make a final judgment until I had used these products a few times.

Sometimes I have to wash my hair more often than I should because after working outside in the yard I have to head to the shower. Two or three times the first week, I washed my hair using Goldwell Dual Senses and I got the same great results, so I am now a “user” of this fine product. It has made a difference in not only how my hair looks, but also how it feels.

I read the shampoo/conditioner containers and noticed it is made in Germany and is a salon exclusive product, so ask your hairstylist about Goldwell Dual Senses Fade Stop Shampoo, especially if you use any color.

Half up/down hairstyles are here to stay

Half-up styles are back in a big way, but it’s already time to take this look to the next level. If you’re sick of the tired top knot or just ready to evolve the look, try this new twist on the effortless hairstyle, straight from the experts at Butterfly Studio Salon. Ideal for natural texture or 2nd (even 3rd!) day hair, it works with any length and texture. A lifesaver for frizzy hair days and so simple to create – not even a brush is needed!

hair 1/2 up 1/2 down

hair 1/2 up 1/2 down

How-To: Half-Up Double Knot

1. First step: texturizing product/dry shampoo, which is essential for grip and hold when styling. (Kattia Solano, owner of Butterfly Studio loves Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray on the crown area) Lift hair, taking it by sections, spray at the root as if you were teasing and then massage through with your hands to work the product in.

2. Using your hands, section out a “horse shoe” shape of hair at the crown area. Thicker hair can opt for larger section while thinner hair can work with a smaller amount of hair. Rake through with your hands to brush and pull back hair to create a clean section.

3. With a small hair tie in one hand, take a section of hair and pull halfway through the tie, so that you are left with a little “pom-pom.” Wrap elastic around 2-3 times until secure without pulling all of the hair through. (Use small clear elastics so you won’t see the tie, and in case you don’t wrap any hair around the knot the ties will be discreet.)

4. Open up the pom-pom with your fingertips for fullness to create a textured knot, then wrap the hair ends around your knot once and tuck hair under the elastic band with ends sticking out. Keep the remaining length right under the pom-pom, as you will use the extra hair length to help with fullness and perfectly messy texture for your next knot.

5. Create your next section right below the first by taking 1 1/2 to 2 inches of hair from the sides (horse shoe of “V” part all the way around the head). Use your hands again to gather and comb the hair back, then combine the hair ends from your first knot with your new section and repeat steps 3 and 4 – tying right under the first pom-pom, tucking through and leaving ends free. If your hair is long enough you can even wrap the extra hair around in a “figure eight” motion around both knots for detail.

6. To finish, spritz a little hairspray and then make it your own. Don’t be afraid to muss it up – the more texture the better! To complete the look, Kattia recommends adding some height/volume at the front top of the head by slightly pulling/gently tugging hair up at the root with your fingers.

*With this hairstyle, volume is always at your side to rid limp hair and that unwanted greasy summer look once and for all. Play with positioning and create more knots for a change up or more customization for how you can wear it. You can even use bobby pins to change the knot shapes.

Met Gala: Olivia Wilde hair how to

Olivia Wilde Looks Striking at Met Gala with a Simple, Smooth Hairstyle

olivis wilde

Olivia Wilde looks stunning on the red carpet tonight in a Prada gown for the 2015 Met Gala. Celebrity hair stylist, Ben Skervin, wanted to accentuate her style with a beautiful headband knotted in grey silk. “I wanted to keep the hair slick and simple, but I also liked the idea of keeping it graphic.” See below for steps from Ben on how to get Olivia’s look using Goldwell.

Skervin applied the Goldwell Style Sign Naturally Full Bodifying Blowdry & Finish Spray which not only helped add thickness to the hair, but it also created the beautiful, satin smooth finish that he needed to achieve with this style.

Goldwell Naturally Full

Once the hair was dry, Skervin then used a straightening iron to get the hair pin straight. He parted the hair down the center and used the Goldwell Style Sign Big Finish Volume Hairspray to smooth down the baby hairs around the hair line and along the part.

Lastly, Skervin added the headband and did one final straightening with the irons over the ends of the hair. He used a small amount of the Goldwell Elixir Versatile Oil Treatment on the very ends of the hair for smoothness. And then finally, he applied a small amount of additional hair spray to keep everything in place
