10 Things you need to know about Laser Hair Removal

1. You need to shave before your appointment so the technician can place the laser directly on the root of the hair.
2. At Spruce & Bond our lasers have a setting that adjusts to not only your skin type, but your hair type as well. The laser fires a concentrated beam of light that’s directed at the pigment in your hair follicles. This kills the follicle at its root, preventing them from growing back.
3. Avoid waxing up to 4 weeks before your appointment. The laser targets the pigment of your hair follicle, and the follicle actually has to be there in order for this to work.
4. It takes at least 5-6 sessions to achieve perfection.
5. Stay consistent with your appointments. Space them out every 4-6 weeks so you hair has enough time to cycle as your hair follicles are on their own growth cycle.
6. Some hair and skin types might be a little harder to treat but it’s still possible. Dark hair follicles are usually easy to treat because, again, the laser targets the hair’s pigment. This is also why gray, white, blonde, and red pigments can be tricky. Spruce & Bond uses a Gentlelase Laser which is color blind, meaning that it has the ability to target any color hair on any skin tone.

7. Avoid direct sunlight on that area and always use a moisturizer with SPF to prevent additional redness.
8. During your treatment, the sensation will feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin. Each session is about 20-30 minutes depending on what you are getting done.
9. During the next day or two after, it’s normal for your skin to appear a little red. Avoid excessive heat and apply Aloe Vera to relive redness.

Lash Extensions for Beginners: The Do’s & Don’ts’ of Spring’s Top Beauty Trend

FROM THE PROS:   There’s no doubt about it: lashes are having a moment right now. If it feels like everyone from celebrities to your next door neighbor has long, luscious lashes these days, it’s likely thanks to a trip to the salon rather than mother nature.
While mascara and eyelash curlers can give your eyes a little extra oomph, nothing will give you voluminous, natural-looking lashes like professional extensions.

Wedding season just around the corner and if you’ve never tried lash extensions before, now is the perfect time to give a whirl! Lash expert and owner of The Lashe Spot, Melinda Rodriguez, has some great tips for first timers:

DO your research. It’s important to research both the salon and the individual who will be applying your lash extensions. Choose a reputable salon and look for someone who specializes in lashes (as opposed to a general esthetician or “jack-of-all-trades.”) Establishments that focus solely on lash services are your best bet.

DO make sure your lash artist uses individual lashes, NOT clusters. Applying one single extension to one individual lash ensures a much more natural look.

DO take care of your natural lashes. To keep your natural lashes growing and regenerating at a healthy rate drink lots of water and consider using a product like RevitaLash.

DON’T get your extensions wet for 24-48 hours after application. To be safe, avoid excessive heat for the first couple of days as well (that includes saunas and Bikram yoga classes.)

DON’T use oily products near your eyes. Oil can degrade the adhesive and shorten the life of your extensions. Instead, use oil-free after care products (like oil-free makeup remover) to help your lashes last.

DON’T forget to brush your lashes. Brushing both your extensions and natural lashes regularly will keep them looking full and beautiful while also clearing our any debris or bacteria.

DO find out what type of adhesive your lash artist will be using. Just as there are numerous different types of lashes (synthetic, silk, mink etc.) there are also numerous ways to bond the extensions. BELLY BLOATING BUSTERS: Avoiding Foods That Make You Look & Feel Fat for Every Life Occasion

When we want to look our best for a special occasion we typically think, hair, make-up, a great outfit and some killer shoes. What we forget to add to the mix is being mindful of food intake. Eating the wrong foods before an event can sabotage your beauty plan. Certain foods can give your gut an instant bloat that looks and feels awful. For a girl’s night out: Don’t be afraid to have a large meal beforehand. If you are planning for an active night, whether dancing, bowling or party hopping, you will need the fuel and protein is key.

– 1 grilled chicken breast (approx 4 oz)
– 1/2 cup cooked brown rice and lentils
– 1 cup steamed string beans

For a dinner- date: Don’t “just have a salad.” All the vegetables in the salad will actually cause your stomach to bloat more.

If Salmon is not an option, mackerel, sea bass and lemon sole are all good options as well. As for the veggies, try to steer clear of cauliflower or broccoli which may cause bloating. For a day at the beach: If you’re going to the beach you need a healthy, energizing meal to get you through the morning but you don’t want it to show in your stomach. You’re probably thinking that the easiest thing to eat before you head out is some Special K with skim milk. It’s low in calories after all, right? It doesn’t matter how low-cal it is, the dairy and multi-grains will expand in your intestines, causing your gut to stick out.

Instead of cereal, Dr. Calapai has a belly bloat busting recipe for oatmeal pancakes. Take 1/2 cup raw oats, 3 egg whites, 1/2 apple, and a dash of cinnamon and throw in a blender to create the pancake mix. This high fiber non-fat breakfast choice offers whole grain fiber plus additional fiber from the apple, and protein from the egg whites. It’s a great filling way to start the day, and will not create any abdominal gas or bloating, so you can go bikini-bare with ease!

For an afternoon luncheon: Eating a well-balanced lunch is essential for boosting energy and productivity; giving you power over that mid-day slump and keeping your metabolism active. Oftentimes people want to skip lunch in hopes of losing weight and grab an energy drink to keep them going. This is so bad! The carbonation from an energy drink will make you more bloated then a light lunch. Dr. Calapai says, “For a mid-day luncheon, your best bet is a salad chock-full of fresh vegetables and greens, topped with a piece of grilled fish, low-fat tuna salad, or fresh turkey breast slices. Throw a few walnuts or almonds on top and dress with a low fat/low sugar dressing, to finish off your delicious salad creation!”

For traveling days: These days airports are getting bigger and so are the food courts. It’s tempting to give in to the convenience of fast travel food, but the combination of a high-sodium smorgasbord and air travel equals a very bloated body from head to toe. There are better options. Eat before you leave for the airport. Dr. Calapai suggests packing your carry-on with fruits, vegetables, and granola bars. These bloat busting options are usually available at airport kiosks. Also, avoid the beverage service on board. Stick to water, you will have a happier flight and feel revived upon arriving at your destination!

So many people get trapped in the web of debt, and instead of looking for ways to get themselves out of the trap they entangle themselves even further.

Here are some steps that you can follow towards a debt free life.

1)  Come to terms with your current situation

Many people are in denial about the status they are in and go through great lengths in hiding their situation. To many people, figuring out how deep in debt they are is like going to the dentist. You know it’s a good idea but it is not always pleasant. Some people do not make any effort since they know they are already too deep in the hole and don’t want to or know how to deal with it. By doing a debt review overview one can reduce debts significantly.

2)  Stop accumulating debt

As the saying goes “If you find yourself in a whole stop digging” If you are dedicated towards being debt free, then it’s only logical to stop borrowing. Anything you buy, pay it off the same month, no adding up on existing credit card balances and no more loans.

3)  Make a list of all your debts

You might need a tissue for this; this can be very depressing. The debt may include student loans, credit cards, car loans, debt owed to individuals, mortgages

4)  Breakdown each debt

Create a diagram with the name of the debt, the amount owed and the minimum monthly payment. Divide the amount owed by the minimum monthly payment to get the number of months it will take to pay off a particular debt.

5)   Determine the order of paying off the debt

Look at the number of months it will take to pay off the debt and write #1 against the least, find the next lowest #2. Do this continuously until you have a number against each debt. The debt with #1 against it will be easy to pay off and you should pay it first. This way you will be encouraged after you start seeing results.

6)  Find extra cash

This might be a bit traumatizing, but it helps to brainstorm some ideas.

  • You can find items in your house that you don’t use or buy items from a garage sale and sell online (on eBay).
  • Sell your expertise online or consult for local businesses
  • Practice delayed gratification

7)  Pay Only The Monthly Minimum For All Your Debt Except For Debt #1

Am sure you get all sort of advice when it comes to debt. Like if you pay just a little more on your loan or credit card, you reduce debt a little quicker. However, this won’t work, instead pay only the month minimum on all debt and put in the extra cash to paying off debt #1.

8.)  Move to Debt #2

Congratulations! You are making progress. For debt #2, pay off its minimum monthly payment plus the minimum monthly payment of debt #1 and the extra cash. Repeat this religiously up to the last debt.

9)   Invest

Invest the monthly amount of the final debt, and don’t be tempted in getting back into the rat trap of debt

Why don’t stem cells in topical skincare work?

Dr. Calapai explains that, “The truth is that stem cells in skincare products do not work as claimed; they simply cannot deliver the promised results. In fact, they likely have no effect at all because stem cells must be alive to function as stem cells, and by the time these delicate cells are added to skincare products, they are long since dead and, therefore, useless.

Do Cosmetics Brands Ever Use Actual Human Stem Cells?

While there are a number of brands on the market touting the use of human stem cells, read the fine print. No cosmetic brand is currently using whole human stem cells. Instead, they are using human stem cell extracts. That one additional word is key, indicating that the formulations are based on growth factors

Why isn’t human skin like a plant?
There are also claims that because a plant’s stem cells allow a plant to repair itself or to survive in harsh climates, these benefits can be passed on to human skin. Dr. Calapai points out that, “How a plant functions in nature is completely unrelated to how human skin functions, and these claims are completely without substantiation. It doesn’t matter how well the plant survives in the desert, no matter how you slather such products on your skin, you still won’t survive long without ample water, shade, clothing, and other skin-protective elements.”

What about the buzz word “Peptides?”
Another twist on the stem cell issue is that cosmetics companies are claiming they have taken components (such as peptides) out of the plant stem cells and made them stable so they will work as stem cells would or that they will influence the adult stem cells naturally present in skin. In terms of these modified ingredients working like stem cells, “this theory doesn’t make any sense because stem cells must be complete and intact to function normally. Using peptides or other ingredients to influence adult stem cells in skin is something that’s being explored, but to date scientists are still trying to determine how that would work and how it could be done safely,” says Dr. Calapai. For now, companies claiming they’ve isolated substances or extracts from stem cells and made them stable are most likely not telling the whole story. Currently, there’s no published, peer-reviewed research showing these stem cell extracts can affect stem cells in human skin.

The Future of Anti-Aging Stem Cells According to Dr. Calapai
Stem cells are a promising technology for the future. And they may even be a great anti-aging treatment when the science catches up with the application. You will know when it is a real anti-aging treatment when the following things are true.

1. The stem cells are from humans (preferably yourself)
2. The stem cells are alive
3. The product is somehow delivered to your dermis (probably an injection)
4. The product is applied by a doctor
