From the Pros: 5 Common Things That Happen When You Lose A Noticeable Amount Of Weight

WRAPPING YOUR MIND AROUND THE “NEW YOU” AFTER WEIGHT LOSS

5 Common Things That Happen When You Lose A Noticeable Amount Of Weight

Whenever someone chooses to commit to a weight loss journey, it’s not just a physical transformation that happens, but a mental transformation as well. Regardless of how long it takes for people to reach their goal weight, there are significant things that occur along the way that impact their body image and confidence. For all of the positive reinforcement once receives, they might also notice some negativity or odd reactions from those they are close to. Read on for tips and insights from leading experts that will offer clarity and solutions for anyone seeking to transform or who already has.

  1. You shed friends along with pounds.

Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD a NYC based licensed neuropsychologist, a teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College, explains that, “It is normal to lose friends as you lose pounds. As you see the payoff from the lifestyle changes you’ve made you may feel disconnected with friends who may still eat and drink things you no longer do. You’re evolving,” offers Dr. Hafeez. She also adds that, “It’s common to notice jealousy, and digs. You may even experience exclusion from dinners out presuming you wouldn’t want to indulge.”

Have faith that your true friends will love you at any size. “It will actually be difficult to tolerate any gossip, negativity or activities that are counterproductive. The last thing you need are people who bring you down when you are doing something positive for your well being. Look out for yourself. At times that may mean distancing from certain people,” advises Dr. Hafeez.

  1. Loose skin becomes the new thing you notice.Once you reach your goal weight, you may love how you look in clothes but naked in or a bathing suit is a whole other story. This is most common when weight loss is significant. Even when weight training is part of the regimen, loose skin does happen.

Dr. John Zannis a board certified plastic surgeon based in New Bern, North Carolina frequently sees and treats patients who went through a weight loss transformation. According to Dr. Zannis, “Loose skin can gather at the stomach, under arms, breasts, buttocks, inner thighs, face and neck. The more significant the weight-loss is, say 50 pounds and above, the more likely a plastic surgeon is sought out to explore body lifts that specifically address loose skin after weight-loss.”

  1. You have more energy, are excited about life and can do more!

As you change your diet, add daily exercise to your new lifestyle and see the weight melt off, you gain energy! You don’t feel the need to hit the snooze button anymore. You may wake up energized for that 7am powerwalk or you may be inspired by that beautiful new dress you get to wear to work, another dress size dropped. Yay!

“Use newfound energy to your advantage, encourages Dr. Hafeez, your brain is forming new neuropathways as your perception about your body starts to change. That flight of stairs that was once an obstacle is much easier. Simple things like putting on shoes, picking up toys and pushing a vacuum are done with ease. As you take notice of what your body can do, you gain more confidence and want to do more. This energizes you both physically and mentally,” she adds.

  1. Shopping gets interesting.

It is common to get overwhelmed with options now that you can shop the way you always dreamed of.  Perhaps your new strong, shapely legs have inspired you to wear dresses again for the first time in years. Or after always covering your arms, you may opt for sleeveless tops. Either way, trying new looks outside of your comfort zone can be daunting. Dr. Hafeez advises to, shop on your own or with someone you really trust. “It is important that shopping is made to be fun by approaching it as a style experiment. Don’t expect everything to look perfect just because you are a much smaller size. Some things will work, others won’t. Look for clothes that feel good. When you smile in the mirror that’s a sign you’re on track.”

  1. You make yourself, your health and well being top priority and start to inspire others.

When you lose a noticeable amount of weight other people want to know how you did it and how you are keeping the weight off. Your immediate family may also adapt to your dietary changes and experience weight loss by association. When your kids see you wake up every morning to exercise they see that anything worth having requires commitment. Your significant other may be inspired to also lose weight. “When you take care of yourself and are in a positive mindset, it has a positive impact on everyone you interact with. When the mind and body are aligned you love the way you look and feel, you’re happy and someone others can look up to.”

Pro Advice from Dr. Zach Bush: Are Probiotics Really Helping?

izds_7ju

Dr. Zach Bush

Probiotics taught us that bacteria is good for your health but it hasn’t proven to be a long lasting solution to gut problems.  A healthy gut needs more than probiotics.  It needs dirt.

Dr. Zach Bush, a triple board certified physician with expertise in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Metabolism, Hospice and Palliative Care, has the facts on what probiotics actually are, what they can do for you and other solutions for your gut health instead.

Probiotics can:
.    Have a positive “reset” effect on the gut
.    Prevent bad bacteria from taking over
.    Provide great short-term benefits, like after an antibiotic wipe out

Probiotics can also:
.    Overwhelm the gut eco-system with one species of bacteria, creating a monoculture
.    Build a temporary environment in your system on a daily basis because they can’t colonize the human gut
.    Cause you to feel worse if you forget or stop taking them

Probiotics don’t:
.    Increase tight junction function, the velcro-like proteins that allow the body to absorb the nutrients it needs and block the toxins it doesn’t
.    Produce a healthier, diverse ecosystem of bacteria
.    Generate communication between your gut and its cells

Even if you eat a clean, non-GMO, gluten-free, and organic diet, you are still susceptible to air, water, and food contaminated with herbicides called glyphosate which you may have heard of.  These herbicides can damage tight junctions which block toxins and lock in nutrients.

Nature has it’s own antidote to glyphosate discovered in unspoiled, ancient soil 10 feet below the southwest desert.  This soil is proven to increase tight junctions to promote a healthy internal firewall, which helps create a more resilient system by supporting gut health, respiratory wellness, balanced immune function, and enhanced mental clarity in the face of environmental factors.   RESTORE is a new soil-based liquid supplement available at GNC, DrugStore.com, thousands of health practitioners offices and soon be at Walgreens and Organic Avenue.

Dr. Bush is available to explain the science behind the need for dirt.

From the pros: “MUST-HAVES” FOR NEW MOMS

unnamed-12

As the transition from summer to fall begins, most expectant Moms are preparing for what they know will be a sleepless, yet amazing first few weeks with their newborn. What they may not know is how much company they willhave as new moms. In fact, July through October have proven to be the most popular months for U.S. births in 2012 – 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).1

While the first few weeks with a new baby may be filled with surprises, there are a few measures that can help mom to feel her best as baby settles in.

Stock up on cozy, layer-friendly clothing and blankets:

Lounging with baby is a well-deserved treat and that precious time should be enjoyed. Prepare for these tender moments by having a luxurious feeling robe waiting at home for your arrival. And for the little one, keep layer-friendly blankets on hand for when autumn’s temperature begins to swing.

Take care of yourself:

Being a new mom often means less time for self-pampering, but it’s essential to take care of yourself. There are a few essentials to stock-up on ahead of time. These may include a soothing eye mask, a face mask, an aromatic body scrub or tools for a DIY manicure. While out, if you’ve developed hemorrhoids during you pregnancy, it’s also a good idea to pick up RectiCare® Complete Hemorrhoid Care System.2 Hemorrhoids are certainly a less desirable outcome of childbirth, but the good news is that RectiCare® may help. It’s important to be evaluated at an early enough stage for intervention with a hemorrhoid, and any pain or bleeding should be discussed with a colorectal specialist, but if the hemorrhoid isn’t severe it is helpful to know that there are topical creams that can help relieve pain, itching, swelling and also offer protection from irritation, so mom can focus on her little bundle.

Recommended by Colon and Rectal Surgeons and formulated with the highest lidocaine 5% and phenylephrine HCI 0.25% strengths available over the counter, RectiCare® Complete Hemorrhoid Care System works quickly to shrink swollen hemorrhoidal tissue and help relieve the pain, itching and burning associated with hemorrhoids and other anorectal disorders.

Keep naptime sacred:

Early morning and midnight feedings mean naptime is sacred to a new mom. And while it may be tempting to race through a growing to-do list while the little one is asleep, consider using the time to rest your own eyes with a short nap or relax with an online yoga class.

The first few weeks with baby may be exhausting, but these simple preparations can help new moms ease into the transition and feel their best for baby.

The system includes RectiCare® Advanced Hemorrhoidal Cream and a supply of 10 “finger cots,” little covers that fit over the finger. The system also includes 8 individually packaged pre-moistened RectiCare® Advanced Hemorrhoidal Wipes which are discreet, and perhaps most important for new moms, portable and perfect for on-the-go relie

RectiCare® Complete Hemorrhoid Care System SRP $29.99, available at Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS

Is Your Closet A River Or The Dead Sea?

susan-maries-e1467144548557

That gorgeous jacket hidden deep in your closet is stunning.

Too bad it went out of fashion in 1997 – much like dozens of other dresses, skirts, blouses and pants that cause the clothes rod to sag, but haven’t been worn in years.

“When I look in some people’s overstuffed closets, I can’t help but want to say, ‘Your closet is supposed to be a river, not the Dead Sea,’ ” says Janna Beatty, an image consultant and co-author with Sharon White of Quintessential Style: Cultivate and Communicate Your Signature Look (www.Qstylethebook.com).

By that she means clothes should flow through a closet the way water passes through a stream – there for a time, then gone. Clothes shouldn’t be held in captivity forever.

“Both women and men add tons of clothing, shoes and accessories to their closets, but they never seem to get rid of anything,” Beatty says.

Beatty and White say that an overly extensive wardrobe actually can hinder your lifestyle. Just to get dressed in the morning you may have to rummage past apparel that should have been tossed years ago.

They offer a few tips for making that closet a more inviting and organized place:

• Use it or lose it. Nothing should be in your closet that you can’t wear right now, Beatty says. That means anything that doesn’t fit, is in need of repair or is out of season shouldn’t be taking up space. If you have extra closet space, move the out-of-season clothing there. If you plan to lose weight, do the same with clothes that don’t fit.  Mostly, though, donate or toss the excess. “Be brutal in deciding what to keep and what to get rid of,” Beatty says.
• Organize your collection. Once the clutter is gone, it’s time to organize what remains, White says. Dressier clothes should hang toward the back of the closet unless you wear them often. Types of garments – skirts, pants, tops – should be grouped together and organized from casual to dressy.
• Customize your closet. Builders mostly build generic closets, using standard measures for clothing racks and shelves. People then just use whatever space is there, whether it works for them or not. Beatty and White suggest that instead of working with that generic layout, you should make your closet work with your wardrobe. That could mean bringing in more storage for shoes, or deciding whether you need more or less hanging space than what’s available.

Once you’re done organizing, you aren’t really done, Beatty and White say.

“You can’t expect to stay organized if you don’t regularly tidy up,” Beatty says. “Make sure you hang clothes back up after you wear them, or put them in the hamper if they need to be washed. Put clean laundry away promptly. If you aren’t careful, you’re closet will be a quagmire again.”

PMS DIET: 8 DO’S AND DONT’S

unnamed

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is such a regular occurrence for many women that they consider it a normal part of getting their period. The Mayo Clinic estimates about 75 percent of women get at least some form of PMS. Although the causes of PMS aren’t well understood, “fluctuating levels of hormones and brain chemicals are thought to play a role. What a woman eats and drinks can also have an effect“ says  Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O.  a Manhattan Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine. He shares with us 10 do’s and don’ts for getting through PMS as pain free as possible.

1)Do get more calcium

Some studies have shown that calcium levels are lower in women with PMS, and that those with the highest intake of calcium reported the mildest PMS symptoms. Dr. Calapai suggests sourcing your calcium from foods such as low-fat milk and dairy, calcium-fortified breakfast cereals and orange juice, and leafy greens.

2) Don’t consume excessive salt

Salt increases water retention, so if you suffer from premenstrual bloating, do limit the amount of sodium you consume in the run up to your period. Eliminate the salt shaker, and cut back on the canned foods, processed foods and condiments, all of which are overflowing with sodium.

3) Do drink more water

“Although this sounds counter-intuitive,” says Dr. Calapai,  “Water can actually alleviate PMS-related fluid retention. Drink plenty of H2O — aim for 8 to 10 glasses a day; more when you exercise — to flush toxins out of your system and reduce premenstrual bloating.”

4) Do Eat Dark Chocolate

Craving the sugary confections like chocolate and cupcakes is totally normal. Try and reach for dark chocolate when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth.  A bonus is, it will boost your mood.

5) Don’t Consume Coffee

While you may need that daily cup   (or two) to be functional, studies show that caffeine increases levels of anxiety. Dr. Calapai explains that, “Your blood vessels contract when caffeine is present in your body, which worsens menstrual cramps. Also, for those with loose stool while on their periods, adding caffeine to your diet will make it difficult for your body to retain water and worsen diarrhea.”

6) Do Eat Greens

Losing a lot of blood can cause iron deficiency, which can cause lightheadedness or nausea. To counteract this problem, Dr. Calapai recommends stocking up on darker greens, like spinach, kale and broccoli to get your iron levels back up, but avoid eating them raw. For spinach, sautée with minced garlic and olive oil for a warm, flavorful bundle of nutrients!

7) Don’t Drink Alcohol

It will only worsen feelings of depression and moodiness. One study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology also found that regular alcohol consumption increased length of and severity of cramps in women who experience cramps during PMS

8) Do Eat Bananas

Sleep disturbances right before your period are the norm for many women. Plus, experts at John Hopkins University in Baltimore found that too little sleep made women more susceptible to pain (meaning those cramps will feel even worse). So make sure to get your z’s by eating bananas, which contain melatonin—a sleep-aid hormone that’s secreted at night and helps regulate our body’s natural rhythms.

DON’T LET YOUR EARS SHOW YOUR AGE!

  • unnamed-3
  • Though our ears are 90 percent formed by age 6, they do change shape and appear to enlarge as we age. The ears droop as soft tissue (skin, fat, and muscle) relaxes and structural support changes. “Bone recedes with time, so there’s less foundation to hold the skin and cartilage up,” says board certified NYC Dermatologist Dr. Kally Papantoniou. “Plus, loss of elasticity and collagen in the skin causes sagging.”  If you’ve been hanging major bling from your ears, there are so simple non-invasive solutions.Over the many years of sun exposure and loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin of the ear lobes, which are usually where the ear piercings are located, can become wrinkled and thinned out. “What this does,” says Dr. Papantoniou, “is weaken the piercing itself so that earrings are not held firmly in the ear and can sag down. The support is also not there so the ear looks shriveled. This is easily improved with the use of hyaluronic acid fillers, such as restylane, juvederm or belotero. The look is completely natural, and the earrings are held up perfectly afterwards, with hardly any down time. For a patient who enjoys wearing large earrings, and has become aware of the appearance of their ears, rejuvenating has become very accessible and effective with fillers.”Testing for Ear Lobe Droop Test yourself with an earring like that pictured or described here.
  • unnamed-2
    1. Never sleep with earrings. Even if this does not feel uncomfortable, it could mean 8 hours of an ear being tugged by the earring against a pillow.
    2. Don’t wear heavy earrings every day routinely. Save this for an important event, or limit the amount of time you wear them to few hours.
    3. Don’t forget your sunscreen!  Photodamage is the # 1 aging factor for the ear.
    4. Consider applying some of your retinol cream to the lower part of theear when you apply to your face.
    5. If you have an over grown scar on the ear, this may be a keloid and it can be treated with either injections or surgical removal, see your dermatologist.Button Style Tiger Eye Earring suffering from Ear Lobe DroopOne of the most challenging styles of earring a person can wear is the circular button earring. If it’s half an inch in size and has a post in the middle.Put it on with a normal sized gold backing. Most likely that earring will little by little tip forward until it’s pointing to the pavement.

This is not only a very unattractive look, but it is hard on your ear-pierced area.

The tricky thing about testing is that at first it looks great, but as the day wears on and you use the phone and other activities, it starts to droop or sag.

5 Things That are Skin No-Nos

savvy_cali_logo_export-1

Pro Advice from Savvy Travelers Being that are our skin is the body’s largest organ, it stands to reason that there are things we should be doing to care for it each and every day. However, many of us go through our daily routines paying very little attention to our skin. In fact, there are a lot of things that we do that end up leading to clogged pores and a dull complexion. These skin “nonos” should be avoided to help keep skin looking and feeling great.

“Our skin is so delicate, yet we treat it as if it can put up with all of the mean things we do to it,” explains expert traveler Tina Aldatz, chief executive officer of cosmetic beauty wipe company Savvy Travelers. “Taking care of your skin can help keep you looking younger, feeling great, and loving what you see when you look in the mirror.”

Here are 5 things that are nonos that people often do to their skin:

  1. Not removing makeup before bed. Many people hit the sack without washing their face, and often leaving makeup on when they do it. According to the National Sleep Foundation, when you do this you can damage your skin. Going to bed with a dirty face leads to clogged pores, makeup tends to have free radicals held in it, which will lead to wrinkles. Keeping something like Take Offz facial cleansing and moisturizing wipes close by provides people with an easy and convenient way to always be able to quickly clean and moisturize their face before bed.
  2. Overlooking the importance of exfoliating. Many people tend to overlook the importance of getting their skin exfoliated. When you have it exfoliated, it removes the old, dead layer, so that younger and healthier skin can regenerate. Regularly doing this at home or having this done by getting regular facials is advised to get the best results.
  3. Getting too much sun exposure. According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Getting too much sun exposure to the skin can lead to skin cancer, as well as cause premature wrinkles. Protect the skin by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and seeking shade whenever possible.
  4. Not staying hydrated. According to the National Institutes of Health, the skin contains around 30 percent water. It’s this water that gives skin its plumpness, elasticity, and resiliency. If you are not staying well hydrated, your skin can lose those attributes, so be sure to drink up.
  5. Having dirty hands. We come in contact with many germs every day, especially on our hands. When those germ-filled hands touch your face, you are transferring them there. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and infections. Keep hands clean by frequently washing them with soap and water, or using anti-bacterial cleansing wipes, such as Klean Upz, when soap and water are not available.

“Between bad habits and germs, our skin can really take a hit,” added Aldatz. “It’s up to us to be proactive to make sure that we hold ourselves accountable in taking care of our skin, as well as being prepared. When we do those two things we will end up with skin that we love and loves us back.”

Savvy Travelers offers a no-rinse line of cosmetic beauty wipes that help to keep travelers healthy and lends a convenient collection of problem solvers for beauty and wellness needs. Wonder Water: 6 Unexpected Infused Waters for Gorgeous Skin!

unnamed-3

From the Pros:

While most dermatologists and doctors preach the benefits of drinking more water, water gets boring. Perhaps you’ve done just about everything to make your plain glass of water more enjoyable. If you’re running out of ideas and are tempted to reach for a caffeinated beverage you’re not alone. We talked to the experts who gave us six fresh infused water recipes that’ll pack a punch of flavor and add health and beauty benefits to your H2O! If you’re new to infused water it’s easy. Chop up the ingredients, let them sit over night in your water pitcher and sip your way to healthy hydration inside and out.

  1. Mango Ginger

This combo might seem weird, but adding the health benefits of ginger and the antioxidant power of mangoes is a surprisingly tasty mix! “Mangoes contain so many vitamins that help boost your immune system. It has antioxidants that maintain youthful glowing skin and aid in the production of blood cells,” says Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. an anti-aging expert and long-time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team.  “Ginger is also helpful in fighting infection, has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, may reduce muscle aches, and helps digestion,” adds Dr. Calapai.

  1. Grapefruit Rosemary

Recently rosemary was found to be the main ingredient eaten by residents of an Italian village with one of the highest populations of people who live past 100! “Rosemary improves circulation and sends more blood to the brain which is linked to greater concentration and potentially reduces risk of Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Calapai. Grapefruit is not only delicious but it’s a natural fat burner, boosts metabolism and cleanses your liver.

  1. Melon Mix

Cut up watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe chunks and throw into your water over night. “This melon variety tastes great and is amazing for your skin,” says Dr. Kally Papantoniou board certified dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. “Melons are immensely hydrating, meaning more hydration per cup of water. They are also chock-full of antioxidants that keep skin clear plus they contain vitamins that promote collagen production which helps skin cell turnover.”

  1. Citrus MintPick your favorite citrus fruits, cut up into slices and add some crushed mint.  “Adding mint to your water is not only extra refreshing but also improves digestive health and can speed up your metabolism,” says Dr. Calapai. “Mint actually contains salicylic acid, a potent acne fighter,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “It’s also well known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties which work to calm irritation both on your skin or internally,” she adds.
  2. Cucumber Lavender

“The reason so many spas use cucumber based treatments is because it contains many skin friendly minerals like magnesium, potassium and silicon,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “This mix is especially healthy,” says Dr. Calapai “Cucumbers are powerful detoxifiers, flushing out any waste in your system. Adding crushed lavender to the mix not only adds a beautiful aroma but can also help digestion as lavender contains polyphenols that reduce bad bacteria in your gut, making your system run smoother,” he explains.

  1. Pineapple Coconut Water
This one is almost cheating… almost. Get your favorite store bought raw coconut water and refrigerate over night with large chunks of pineapple. The coconut-pineapple flavor combo is delicious and reminiscent of a piña colada without all the sugar and calories. Although this is not pure H2O, coconut water contains electrolytes which plain water does not, which rehydrate you in record time. “Pineapple is yet another fruit that aids in collagen production,” says Papantoniou “This is not just great for beautiful skin, collagen also has a major role in bone health and tissue repair.”

Clearly there are benefits to keeping hydrated. Water does not have to be boring, it can be delicious. Drink up!

Beauty Bucket List 10 Unexpected Must Do Things

unnamed-6

Want to look, feel and think more beautifully? We called upon several experts in dermatology, longevity, psychology and even plastic surgery to bring you 10 unexpected things to consider adding to your beauty bucket list. They are…

  1. Only drink water for 30 days. Imagine the benefits to your skin, hair, nails and overall body when you cut out sugars, caffeine, alcohol, and anything artificial and go straight H20. Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. anti aging and stem cell specialist says, “be sure to drink pure water and if it gets boring add lemon, lime, or blueberries. Within the first week you will notice skin that is plump, glowing, clear and soft. By the second week people will take notice asking what you have done. The difference, for those who stick to a water only beverage plan for 30 days is astounding.”
  1. Ditch all facial products for a month. Look at your bathroom countertop and drawers. Product overload is common. Perhaps you bought into the promises of one product then jumped to another and another. Clear the clutter and clear your skin. Dr. Kally Papantoniou a board certified dermatologist in New York urges people to get rid of old expired skincare products and get back to basics. Using a simple non comedogenic facial cleanser and a moisturizer with SPF each day for a month will allow the skin to heal itself and return to a natural state. After 2 weeks of a simplified skincare regimen you may see fewer and less intense breakouts, less dryness or less oil.
  1. Change your hair color and style.

It’s quite common for women to drastically change their hair after a break-up but why wait for an emotional upheaval? Have long hair? Try a pixie cut! Have a short brown bob? Go blonde! Dr. Sanam Hafeez, NYC based licensed neuropsychologist and teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College, explains that our hair is a huge part of our identity. “When we really want a change in our lives, the fastest way to shift your mind towards forward progression is to alter our appearance in a major way. The best part with experimenting with hair is that it can grow back and you can enjoy different styles during the grow out process.”

Give the girls a lift or go smaller!  Dr. John Zannis a board certified plastic surgeon from North Carolina, says that breast augmentation done to mothers who breastfed multiple children is a game changer. “These women come in to see me feeling as if their breasts don’t match their zest for life. They want them lifted and fuller and back to what they were before breastfeeding.” Further women whose smaller frame can’t handle large breasts leading to back and neck strain and even nerve damage can benefit from breast reduction. “Breast reduction changes lives. I have seen it in my practice. Women feel free going from an F cup to a full B. No more neck aches and shoulder pain not to mention bra straps digging into skin.”

  1. Learn to meditate.Want to appear 5 – 10 years younger within a month? Start meditating. Studies have shown that people who meditate are more optimistic, more calm and able to remain focused. They seem to breathe more deeply and have this general vibe of self-awareness. People who meditate know how to declutter their minds of worrisome thoughts that only perpetuate accelerated aging and illness. Dr. Hafeezencourages her patients to meditate by engaging all 5 senses. “When we sit or lay still and focus on our breathing and immediate surroundings we become fully present.”
  1. Get a skin check up, head to toe by a pro.People mistakenly think that total body skin screenings are for the pale and cancer prone. This is not the case. Even people who never burn in the sun should have a check up. “There are places where precancerous moles like to hide such as in the scalp, behind ears, in-between toes and under nails,” explains Dr. Papantoniou. “It’s always good to be safe and get moles and other growths looked at as we age.”
  1. Get it “fixed.” Maybe you broke your nose playing soccer at 14 and it never healed right affecting your breathing not to mention making a common cold a catastrophe. Now that you’re an adult and your facial bones have settled into place consider a nose job. Dr. Zannis, warns that a broken nose can complicate breathing which can lead to sleep apnea and a host of other sinus issues. “Most of the time it’s not only a cosmetic issue it goes deeper than that. It’s important that the functionality of the nose is a priority. Many of my cases have experienced an injury to their nose which not only affected the appearance but their breathing.”
  1. Buy a luxurious bathrobe. Admit it those robes found at spas and 5 star hotels are comfortable, really really, really comfortable. It’s amazing how something so simple can really make you feel so beautiful. “Adding a touch of luxury to your life is a kind way to pamper yourself. Women of all shapes and sizes have body issues so if it feels great to wrap your body in a plush terry cloth robe go for it!, offersDr. Hafeez.

Go back to bedtime. When we sleep our body repairs itself. When we are overworked, over worried and sleep deprived our bodies don’t have the time to regenerate. This leads to a slower metabolism, poor organ function and sallow, wrinkled skin. “As we age we need a set bedtime and wake-time. The sleep cycle is pivotal for cellular turnover. New mothers often see more wrinkles and a difference in skin texture and radiance because they are awakened several times during the night,” offers Dr. Calapai. Ideally adults need between 6 and 8 hours of sleep each night.

  1. Get those earlobes repaired! From the most simple ear lobe repair for a torn ear lobe, to the more complex repair of ear gauges, you can now have your ear lobe back. Dr. Papantoniou offers this procedure in office, with local anesthesia and stitches that are dissolvable. “The ear heals very quickly and scars are minimal. The ear can be re-pierced 2-3 months after having the repair surgery,” she explains.

Regardless of where you are on your beauty journey of life know that how we feel matters most and feeling good from the inside always makes the outside more healthy, vibrant and beautiful.

ARE YOU AN AQUAHOLIC? TOO MUCH H20 CAN ACTUALLY BE DANGEROUS

unnamed-1

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve probably heard a lot about water and weight loss. Can drinking more water really help you lose weight? The short answer is yes — and no. If you’re already well hydrated and getting plenty of water, getting more water into your diet probably won’t make a lot of difference. But if you’re going through your days a little — or a lot dehydrated, as many people are, getting enough water could help. Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. is a Manhattan Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine. He states that, “There is always the case of too much of a good thing. Some people are such water drinking devotees that they are aquaholics, resulting in overhydration.”   As a result, experts now fear we’ve become so focused on staying hydrated that we’re guzzling water to life-threatening extremes.

Dr. Calapai points out that, “There are two types of overhydration: Increased water intake and retaining water. Increased water intake—or drinking more water than the kidneys can get rid of in the urine—can cause too much water to collect in the body.”

When the body is unable to get rid of excess water, it is said to be retaining water. This happens with several medical conditions, for instance. It can be dangerous because it throws off the balance between water and sodium in the blood.

Overhydration caused by drinking too much water can occur both consciously and unconsciously. Dr. Calapai says that, “A person may drink too much water during exercise. Some medications can also cause dry mouth and cause an increase in thirst. Increased thirst can also be caused by uncontrolled diabetes. Psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia (primary polydipsia or psychogenic polydipsia) can also cause compulsive water drinking.”

What Are the Symptoms of Overhydration?

Symptoms of overhydration may not be recognized in the early stages but can include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Changes in mental state (confusion or disorientation)

If left untreated, overhydration can lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood (hyponatremia). This can cause more-severe symptoms, such as:

  • Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness
  • Coma

How Can Overhydration Be Prevented?

Endurance athletes can reduce the risk of overhydration by weighing themselves before and after a race to determine how much water they have lost and need to replenish.

Dr. Calapai emphasizes that, ”Individuals should avoid drinking more than one liter per hour of fluid. Drinking more fluids before and during a race or anintensive athletic exertion can also help you avoid the need to drink too much water afterwards. Sports beverages that contain the electrolytes sodium and potassium are also recommended, as both are lost in sweat.”

So how do you know how much water you need?

For starters, don’t rely solely on thirst, says Calapai. “As soon as you put water on your tongue, you kill your thirst mechanism.” Instead, he suggests the following:

  1. Weigh yourself daily for a week, to check hydration. “Your body weight shouldn’t fluctuate too much,” Calapai says.
  1. Notice how much you pee—and its color—in the morning. It should be a copious amount and pale or clear.
  1. Aim to wake feeling hydrated. If you’re thirsty when you get out of bed in the morning, you may not be consuming enough fluids.
  1. When choosing sports drinks, search for labels with low sugar. Dr. Calapai recommends about 5 grams per 8-ounce serving. “Even natural drinks like coconut water have too much sugar and potassium to hydrate.”
  1. Coffee, tea, and watery fruits and vegetables count toward fluid intake. “Also, caffeine is not a diuretic,” Dr. Calapai says. “It’s about volume, so if you drink five cups, you’ll pee more.”
  1. Start slowly. “Sleep is a six- to eight-hour fast, so if you drink three cups of juice or water right away, you’ll trigger the volume response. Sip instead.”

If you have an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, or kidney problems, talk to your doctor about the best treatments for those conditions. If you experience excessive thirst or an overly strong urge to drink water, contact your doctor before you develop symptoms—it could indicate a medical problem that requires treatment
