TikTok Makeup Trend – Contouring with White Eyeliner

White eyeliner is having a moment right now! TikTokers have found a new way to use it: contouring! Watch the video here. Vasanti Cosmetics’ celebrity makeup artist Gargi Patel breaks down the trend, sharing 14 ways you can contour, highlight or camouflage with Vasanti Cosmetics very own white eyeliner – the Kajal Waterline Eyeliner Pencil in White Clarifier ($19; Amazon).

TikTok Makeup Trend – Contouring with White Eyeliner

Vasanti Cosmetics breaks down the latest TikTok makeup trend and shares 14 other tips for contouring, highlighting and camouflaging with white eyeliner!

TikTok Contour tutorial

@serenalakkiss

What is the secret to trying this trend?

“I recommend using white eyeliner to contour after you have applied your makeup so you can enhance certain areas of the face.”

Why does white work? What does it do the face?

“The color white is always used to brighten and add radiance. It reflects light and highlights a specific point on the face to make certain facial features stand-out,” she explains.

What is the best way to apply? How thick of a line should you draw on the face?

“The best way to apply is by drawing a thicker line in the areas you would like to highlight. To blend, use a concealer brush like the Vasanti Cosmetics Concealer Buffer – Undereye Setting Brush for a smooth well blended look. Also, creating small dots with the tip of the white eyeliner around the eye area will bring attention to your eyes.”

What are other ways to apply white eyeliner?

“There are many options to create that illuminous look.”

Some of Gargi’s favorites include:

1. Under the eyebrows as a highlighter – Draw a curved line following the curve of your eyebrow to accentuate your eyebrow shape and to create the appearance of lifted eyebrows which open up your eyes- a great trick for hooded eyes, and deep-set eyes.

2. Corner and outer corner of the eyes – Using the tip of the eyeliner, draw short lines at either the inner or outer corners of the eye. This can help your eyes appear more radiant and awake.

3. Mid eyelid – Draw a line from the crease to the eyelashes, blend to add dimension to eye. The white would be used to blend into other shades of eyeshadow – when doing certain makeup looks to help enhance eyes, you can use a neutral shade like white as a highlighter to run down the middle of eyelid alongside other shades to create a 3D effect.

4. Eyeliner (top and bottom)– Applying to bottom of eye or waterline will bring out the whites of the eye for more bright, wider, awake eyes. Applying to the top of eyelid achieves a more awake, lifted, youthful effect. Pairing dark shade eyeliner and white eyeliner on the eyelid together can create an instantly larger, “doe” eyed look where eyes appear more open and larger.

5. Blended dots to accentuate key points on the eyes – Using the tip of the eyeliner, apply small dots on the inner and outer corners of the eye or on the eyelid, on the arch to highlight eyes like the inner corner and on the outer corner for a highlighted, bright eye look.

6. Line from mid eye to past the outer corner of the eye – Get an instant eye lift by applying white eyeliner starting at the middle of your eyelid, keeping the pencil close to the lash line and when you reach the end of your eye, flick your pencil upwards to create a cat eye effect that will give you an instant eye lift!

7. Waterline – apply to your waterline to bring out the whites of the eye for more bright, wider, awake eyes – fake being well rested!

8. Top of nose – Draw a small line at the top of the nose and blend half way down the bridge of the nose. This will highlight the bridge and draw attention to center of the face.

9. Tip of nose – Draw a vertical line across the tip of the nose to shorten the bridge of your nose and create the appearance of a smaller nose.10. Sides of nose – Draw horizontal lines down the sides of the nose to help accentuate the contour of the nose.

11. The bow – Draw a horizontal line from the bottom of the nose to the center of the lip to accentuate lip shape

12. Face-lift – Draw a line with the white eyeliner starting from your nasal fold up toward the cheek bone. Next, make a line from the corner of the mouth to below the cheek bone. Blend with upward strokes to create a visible face lift!

13. Smile lines – Draw a thin light line in the smile line and gently blend along the line to add fullness to the smile lines.

14. Mid chin – For those with receded chins, draw a vertical line (1-2 lines) across the lower half of the chin and blend to add fullness and projection to the chin.

Opinion: Marijuana Is a Healthier Alternative to Cigarettes

With the growing legalization of marijuana products countrywide, more and more people are turning to cannabis to relax and benefit from.

However, despite the health warnings and price surges, plenty of people still opt to smoke tobacco cigarettes.

If you’re trying to quit smoking tobacco once and for all, we’re here for you and have some information you need to see. These are all the reasons why marijuana is a healthier alternative to cigarettes.

Less Nasty Chemicals

One of the worst aspects of cigarettes is that they’re loaded with damaging chemicals. It’s not just tobacco and nicotine neatly rolled in paper, unfortunately.

Here is a list of the most prolific chemicals in any and every brand’s cigarettes:

  • Nicotine (the chemical that keeps you addicted to cigarettes)
  • Arsenic
  • Lead
  • Formaldehyde
  • Ammonia
  • Hydrogen cyanide
  • Radioactive elements
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Nitrosamines
  • Benzene

Pretty gross, right?

And that’s not even half of it. Cigarettes comprise thousands of chemicals, at least 70 of which are carcinogens, chemicals known to cause cancer.

Of course, marijuana contains hundreds of chemicals itself. But these include cannabinoids as well as others like vitamins, proteins, terpenes, amino acids, and enzymes.

You Don’t Have to Smoke It

When you smoke a cigarette, you’re breathing in the chemicals above and inviting them to damage your lungs, mouth, throat, heart, and other vital regions.

But one of the greatest things about marijuana is its versatility. If you don’t want to smoke it, you simply don’t have to.

Whether you enjoy marijuana for its medical or psychoactive properties, you can consume it in various ways. You can munch on edibles, slap on a transdermal patch, rub on cannabis topicals, and add tinctures to your drinks.

… But Even If You Do, it’s Less Damaging to Lungs

Okay, so you prefer the idea of smoking marijuana. That’s fine since it’s still a healthier alternative to cigarettes.

According to a large-scale study, even though marijuana and cigarettes contain chemicals, tobacco smoke is much more damaging to the lungs.

So smoking marijuana is less harmful to the body by far. But there are other things to consider. Such as ensuring you’re using the right type of marijuana for your purpose.

For example, you can smoke hemp if you want to enjoy the health benefits of CBD (more on that ahead!)

Alternatively, you can smoke cannabis with a greater concentration of THC if you aim to get high.

Marijuana Offers Myriad Health Benefits

You will never hear the term “medical tobacco” ever. But you’re probably aware of the phrase “medical marijuana.” And for excellent reasons.

In human and animal studies, marijuana is proving to be a workhorse in terms of the health benefits it offers. This is mainly due to its CBD (cannabidiol) content, which touts tons of mind and body benefits.

These include:

  • Sleeping better
  • Reducing anxiety and depression
  • Managing chronic pain
  • Improving digestive issues, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS)
  • Boosting heart health
  • Reducing seizures and tremors

Compare this to what tobacco does to the mind and body (which we’ll discuss next!), and it’s very clear why marijuana is a healthier alternative to cigarettes.

Tobacco is Whacko

Smoking tobacco cigarettes comes with a seemingly endless parade of risks.

For starters, smoking is the major cause of cardiovascular disease, which encompasses heart disease and strokes.

It can also cause cancer, lung disease, diabetes, eye diseases, immune system disorders, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

These are diseases that lead to a slow, painful death.

And at the starting stages of these cigarette smoking-induced diseases, you will not be able to do the things you always loved doing. You’ll have to undergo radiation, chemotherapy, heart surgery, drag an oxygen tank with you, etc.

It’s certainly not the type of life most people plan on leading the first time they smoke a cigarette.

It may seem that the more cigarettes you smoke, the worse off for your health, which is true in many cases.

But even just smoking one to five cigarettes a day is dangerous. One study found a clear and direct link to an increase of cardiovascular and coronary diseases from low cigarette consumption smokers.

Conclusion

We’re not suggesting that marijuana is a cure for anyone’s ailments. But if you have to choose one over the other, ditch cigarettes as quickly as possible, please!

As we discussed, marijuana is a healthier alternative to cigarettes, since:

  1. Marijuana has fewer dangerous chemicals than tobacco.
  2. It has more consumption methods than just smoking.
  3. It’s less damaging to your lungs when you do smoke it.
  4. Marijuana has lots of health benefits.
  5. Smoking cigarettes leads to a lot of deadly diseases and impaired quality of life.

In all likelihood, marijuana will help to improve your life. And it’s easy to see now how saying the complete opposite about cigarettes is no overstatement.

THE HOTTEST TRENDS IN SKINCARE FOR 2021 and BEYOND SHOULD YOU USE THEM OR LOSE THEM?

Each year brings with it fashion trends, decorating trends, and beauty trends.  The latter covers nails, haircare, makeup and skincare. With the ubiquity of social media, and TikTok, beauty users now can pick up popular trends from anywhere across the world and follow them. Skincare is the biggest segment in the beauty industry with global sales that hover around $130 billion in 2019. There is so much for consumers to digest and decide on. We turned to Dr. Michael Somenek, a Washington, D.C. Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and skin care expert. He takes a microscope to some of the hottest trends in 2021 to give you insight into what’s worth your hard- earned dollars.

www.somenekpittmand.com

CBD In Skincare

CBD (short for cannabidiol) has no plans of easing up its reign on the skin-care world in 2021 and beyond.  As a case in point, there are at least two major skin care brands that now include CBD in their skincare, not to mention the indie companies who have created CBD skincare. Dr. Somenek’s take: “As far as it being good for skin, it acts as both an anti-inflammatory agent and an oil reduction agent. Theoretically, its addition to skin care products, especially those tasked to fight acne and other inflammatory skin conditions, is probably legitimate. It is also a good antioxidant that can help protect against free radical damage to skin cells. CBD can be made from hemp which helps skincare companies get around the federal ban on marijuana. Side effects of unregulated use include: Nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can increase the level in your blood of the blood thinner coumadin, and it can raise levels of certain other medications in your blood by the exact same mechanism that grapefruit juice does.”

Microneedle Patches

Some beauty editors and bloggers swear by pimple patches. According to experts, those patches are about to get even more advanced by way of a ton of tiny microneedles (or “microstructures”). The logic is that you can out put a smaller amount of acne-fighting ingredients into these tiny little cones and apply it to the skin, it’s a better, more effective delivery system.

Here’s how they are purported to work: The small band-aid-like sticker has spikes coated with hyaluronic acid that are thinner than a hair follicle. Through these teeny painless pricks in the skin, the patch drives the active ingredients deep in to the skin.

Dr. Somenek’s take:

“There is plenty of good medical literature on the validity of these small patches that are impregnated with various chemicals. The patch gets worn and the needles (either metallic or made out of absorbable polymer) penetrate the skin delivering the chemical treatment. Their design takes advantage of the concept of transcutaneous delivery of drugs. Patches can be custom made to fit various areas of the face and deliver anti-aging or other chemicals while a patient sleeps. The efficiency of delivery is better through the tiny skin punctures than if you only put the chemical directly on the intact skin. In theory, aesthetic practitioners can make custom topical treatments and place them on the patches to deliver customized at home skin treatments for their patients.”

Is a Cryotherapy Facial Is the Best Way to Brighter, Tighter Skin?

Cryotherapy has gained popularity in recent years with spa treatments exposing clients to sub-zero temperatures to help relieve pain and improve their health. This wellness treatment has recently undergone another adaptation with the cryotherapy facial treatment. The Cryo Facial is a cryogenic treatment that is performed by what is considered a “cryo probe,” which beams vaporized liquid nitrogen across the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Different from the cryotherapy chambers that can be used for pain relief, the facial targets helping the face look younger.

Dr. Somenek’s take: “This may be more suspect. There isn’t a great deal of study-based evidence that cryotherapy facials actually do what they claim. Typically, cryotherapy uses extremely cold liquid nitrogen to freeze exposed skin cells to kill them, like a wart. The facials use the same liquid nitrogen as a spray, but the aesthetician doesn’t stay in one area too long to avoid frostbite to the skin. Some level of cold injury occurs, probably to a very superficial level of the skin, so there may be some exfoliation. But there are safer ways to get exfoliation without risking frostbite or hyperpigmentation.”

Anti-pollution skincare

Your skin is exposed to environmental aggressors on a regular basis. Although unseen, these pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin by breaking down collagen and elastin, the fibers that give skin its bounce. To help reduce these unwanted side effects, anti-pollution skin care products are continuing to gain favorability among consumers. Just as SPF is now de rigor in skin care, this seems to be the case with anti-pollution ingredient.

Dr. Somenek’s take: “I think that this is a new name for old tech. In brief, our skin is exposed to environmental contaminants that create inflammatory conditions. These conditions lead to build up of free radicals in the skin. The ingredients in antipollution skin care are basically strong antioxidants that protect against the free radicals. But the skin is assaulted by more than chemicals. It experiences dehydration, UV exposure, temperature changes, etc. True antipollution skincare should guard against all this. Typical protective and reparative ingredients include vitamin E, vitamin C, retinoids, hyaluronic acid, zinc oxide, vitamin B3, and bisabolol.”

Dr. Somenek’s final verdict: Just as one can become a slave to fashion, the same can happen with skin care trends. My best advice is to consult with your skincare physician. Discuss what you are exposed to during the day.  Is it sun, pollution, humid air, wind, etc.? Talk to your doctor about what type of skin you have. Skin type changes as you age, and as hormonal factors come into play. Someone who had oily skin in their 20’s and 30’s can have combination skin in their 40’s and 50’s. Speak with your aesthetic provider about what your specific goals are for your skin. Is it reduced acne? Fewer wrinkles? Reduced brown spots? Broken capillaries? Just because something is a trend, does not mean it’s right for your skin care type or your goals. If you have a regimen that works for you, stick with it.  Don’t be tempted by designer brands if drugstore brands are effective for you. There is nothing wrong with giving your skin care routine a modern “kick,” but good skincare does not mean one must try everything available on the market or in a med/spa or doctor’s office.

Tips for a Cozy Home this Fall

As we move into fall and watch the leaves change color, our instinct is to naturally transition from the outdoor social activities of summer to nesting inside, leaning into warmth and coziness. Meredith Staggers, Founder and Owner of Cake & Confetti, shares smart, creative tips for tidying up the household as we welcome fall.

Don’t wait to do laundry. Letting laundry accumulate, is grounds for a stinky and messy house. Split the dirty laundry in more manageable stacks and make sure to use a reliable laundry detergent. Since dry and sensitive skin is common during the cooler months, I like using a hypoallergenic and gentle detergent like Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin Plus Hypoallergenic Fresh Scent as it’s safe for skin, but it doesn’t skip on freshness.

Stash away your summer clothes. With cooler weather making an appearance, it’s time to make room for cold weather clothes. Take time as a family to sort clothes that won’t be worn during the cold months, and even make a donate pile for clothes that have been outgrown. Putting away clothes that won’t be worn for months is a good way to feel more organized and even make room for some new sweaters.

Make cleaning fun. When you have kids or pets, toys find their way throughout the house. Instead of taking on picking them up yourself, make it a game for young ones and the rest of the family, and race to see who can clean up faster or sort toys according to color or category.

Ignite your Senses. Choose a candle scent that’s comforting to you. Filling your home with a warm fragrance will spark fond memories and even a physical relaxation response. When we activate the senses, it can make us pause and feel grateful for friends and family who fill our home. That’s what brings us the most warmth and happiness. Dirt doesn’t have to become the new normal. While hiking and apple picking outdoors are fun fall activities, they may result in dirty, grimy floors. Mixing 1/3 cup of bleach, a gallon of water, and a teaspoon of Arm & Hammer Odor Blasters, Fresh Burst laundry detergent to make an all-purpose cleaner can work out tough stains, leaving your floors squeaky clean and smelling fresh.

Get ready for overnight guests. Fall is the time of year we typically get more overnight visits from family around the holidays, with kids out of school and people having time off from work. Prepare for these overnight visits and freshen up the guest rooms by washing bedding or blankets with Arm & Hammer In-Wash Scent Booster, Fresh Boost, or adding a fragrant air freshener to make their stay cozier.

“Believe it or not, autumn brings in more dirt, sweat, and stains than we realize. With good hygiene being a top priority this year, make sure to tidy up the household as much as possible to ensure a comfortable and clean home,” adds Staggers.
