How Does Breast Augmentation Work?

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, places an implant into the breasts to make them larger, more symmetrical, or more shapely. While most women probably go for the procedure for larger breasts, asymmetry isn’t uncommon, and breast augmentation can correct it without losing any breast volume. 

Breast implants come in saline and silicone forms. Both give people excellent results, although silicone implants often provide a more natural appearance, while saline implants look more bold and defined. Implants come in a range of shapes as well as sizes. Some people prefer softer implants with a more natural feel, while others would like their implants to make their breasts project out more noticeably. How Long is Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

As a surgical procedure, breast augmentation will have recovery time. You will want someone to stay with you for the first day or two after surgery since you will probably feel very sore during those few days. You can expect to spend at least a week recovering before you can return to any of your usual activities. You will have some pain and swelling after surgery that may take a few weeks to go away completely. You’ll be given a special recovery bra and instructions for how to keep your breasts bandaged while they heal.  

After surgery, your doctor will instruct you to inform them if you see any of these unusual but possible side effects:

Is Recovery Longer if You Have a Breast Lift?

If you have sagging or loose breasts, an augmentation alone will not give you the results you want. Implants can’t correct loose skin or lift breasts that have sagged. A breast lift uses an incision around the areola and under the breast to remove excess skin and lift the breast tissue. If placing implants, the surgeon will also take this opportunity to create a pocket for the implant to rest in. 

Because this surgery involves larger incisions, you may feel more soreness after surgery and may need more time to heal. You will have more stitches with a breast lift, and the surgeon will have to remove loose skin, making this a more intensive procedure. Expect to spend a few extra days recovering before resuming any of your usual activities. 

Some women feel like their breasts are too small or uneven in size or shape. Other women feel happy with the size of their breasts, but not as much with what gravity or having children has done to them over time. Some women have both problems. A surgeon can perform a breast lift, a breast augmentation, or both at the same time to get the best results. 

What Does A Breast Lift Do?

Whether it’s pregnancy, breastfeeding, or just gravity, breasts often start to sag over time. Sagging breasts lose the fullness in the upper part of the breast, and the areolas often shift with the breast skin to point downward. In this situation, the problem results from stretched skin that has lost elasticity. The solution: a breast lift. This procedure removes excess skin from the breasts, lifts the breast tissue back into its proper position, and finally repositions the areolas to a more aesthetically pleasing location. 

You can’t get breast volume from a lift. This procedure can correct loose skin and breasts where the upper volume has shifted downward. This restores the appearance they want for some women, and they don’t need any added volume. 

Why Get Breast Augmentation?

If you feel like your breasts are too small or uneven, you may consider breast augmentation. Your surgeon will place implants into a pocket they create in your breast tissue, usually through a small incision around the areola or in the armpit. Implants give full, rounded breasts, and they come in different shapes and sizes to give people their desired breast shape. If breasts appear uneven, the surgeon can use different implant sizes or shapes to correct the asymmetry. 

You will get added volume from this procedure, but you can’t fix loose skin or restore sagging breasts to their more youthful position. For women who want enhancement but don’t have concerns about loose skin, breast augmentation should provide the desired results. 

What if You Need Both?

A breast lift can stop sagging but can’t make breasts larger. Breast augmentation can enhance the size and shape of the breasts, but it will not fix loose, stretched skin. Since many women have lost breast volume and experienced sagging over time, surgeons can combine the two procedures to achieve round, full, lifted breasts with properly positioned areolas. 

Having a breast augmentation with a lift at the same time means that you will only need one surgery, which means you may save money on hospital and operating room fees over having both procedures at different times. You will only need to go under anesthesia once, and you will see more dramatic results than either procedure by itself.
