Tips To Look After Your Teeth

Your teeth are important because once you’ve lost your milk teeth, your adult teeth are only a one-time thing. That means once they’re gone, they’re gone! So here are some tips to look after your teeth.

Avoid Sugary Drinks

It’s a tip that’s mentioned constantly, but cutting out sugary drinks can be difficult for some people. Anything acidic or high in sugar is usually bad for you anyway, but the ingredients within these drinks can end up rotting your teeth or causing extensive damage that will need to be fixed by your dentist. Try to avoid sugary drinks where possible and if you need to substitute it, then sparkling water is definitely going to be at least a little nicer on your teeth. It’s hard to cut sugary drinks out, but it is possible to replace it with healthier alternatives. Water flavored with cucumber, strawberries, or lemon is a way of adding taste to water and for it to be a lot more gentle on your teeth.

Brush Two Or Three Times A Day

Brushing your teeth is a must, and you’ve likely been taught how to brush your teeth by your parents or other members of your household. Brushing your teeth helps get rid of all the dirt and build-up of plaque that may form throughout your working day. Ideally, you want to be brushing your teeth after every meal. That would mean three times a day. However, not everyone has the ability or time to do that, so keep it to two times, once in the morning and once in the evening. You don’t want that food sitting on your teeth for hours on end. The sooner you brush it off, the better.

Get Regular Check-Ups

You need to get dental check-ups often as your teeth do continue to change as you get older. Your once straight teeth may now be crooked due to wisdom teeth popping up. If you’re asking yourself, ‘how fast can I straighten my teeth?’, then that’s one, only your dentist would know. Dental appointments can be terrifying, but it’s important to note that it’s not as bad as it seems, and if you speak to your dentist beforehand, they’ll do everything possible to keep you calm. Regular check-ups are a must, so ensure you’re going at least once a year for the annual check.

Floss Your Teeth Daily

Flossing your teeth is something not everyone does, but it’s certainly one element of dental care that you should be doing alongside brushing your teeth. No toothbrush is really going to get out all of the food particles in your mouth, which is why floss is used. Floss your teeth daily in order to help keep your teeth clean. Do this after brushing your teeth as an extra step.

Looking after your teeth is as important as looking after anything when it comes to your general health. Attend your appointments, and don’t forget to brush your teeth, no matter how tired you may be.

How To Cut The Christmas Gift Buying Stress

Was it not five minutes ago when the Christmas decorations came down after the last festive season? It feels as though it was, but yet the months are rolling on by. When you stop and think about how quickly Christmas will be upon us, it can often cause a slight panic to set in.

But for some people, counting down the days to Christmas fills them with lots of enjoyment, and planning and buying gifts for loved ones is not a stressful challenge. The reason that some people get more enjoyment out of the run-up to Christmas is that they are good at planning for it. Here are some tips to help you live stress-free between now and Christmas, and get all of your gifts bought and wrapped in time.

Brainstorm

Have a think about ideas as early as possible, and start making notes about each person you need to buy for. If you pick up on the fact that they like natural perfume, write it down. You may hear them talking about books or clothing items that they are interested in.

Start Early

There are three great reasons for starting your Christmas gift shops early. Firstly, it stops you stressing about what to get because it allows you time to buy things as you come across them. Secondly, it shares the cost of the festive season over a much broader period. If you are paying for gifts throughout the year, you won’t suddenly find yourself out of money later in the year. The third reason is that you will have access to much better gifting prices if you shop at the right times.

In January, retailers have a lot of Chrismas stock that they need to get sold before it ends up clogging up valuable stockroom space. The January sales are often the best opportunity for selling through anything that had not already sold-out before Christmas in order to get as much money back from their investment. Discounts often come in two waves, however, the better stock tends to go early on in the month.

In the summer months, many stores have a clear out of older stock so that they can make way for Christmas again. This means that they will be pulling items from their stockrooms that may be a bargain by now.

Give Experiences As Gifts

Arranging a day out for someone to somewhere that they will never forget will be something that they will possibly cherish more than an item that you have bought for them. Think about buying a ride on a hot air balloon, or taking them for a spa weekend. The more detail that you can put into our planning of the event, the better.

Make A Gift

Sometimes, receiving a handmade gift can be very sweet. There is a lot more love and attention that goes into making something than just having something bought for you. You could make an item of clothing, jewellery, paint a picture, or even make some soap/

COLD WEATHER HEALTH MYTHS BUSTED!

https://tourocom.touro.edu/academics/faculty/harlem/niket-sonpal.php

There are endless winter health myths that we have heard from well intentioned grandparents and parents. They have become so ingrained in us that we take them as cold hard facts. Many of these myths have no more basis in reality than Santa Claus.  Of course, everyone wants to stay as healthy as possible during the frosty months. In order to do so sensibly, we turned to Board Certified NYC internist and gastroenterologist Dr. Niket Sonpal.

Myth: Allergies go away in the winter

Allergies might be the real source behind your stuffy nose and scratchy throat this season. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, one in five people suffer from indoor/outdoor allergies, and the indoor variety can actually be worse in the winter. Dr. Sonpal cautions that, “If your symptoms last longer than 10 days or ease up after taking an antihistamine, it might be time to visit an allergist.”

Myth: I wash my hands all the time with hand sanitizer, so I should be fine.

Hand sanitizer will kill most viruses, but not all. You must make sure you use the right amount of hand sanitizer and let it dry completely. Dr. Sonpal points out that,” Some viruses, like norovirus, which causes vomiting, is not killed by hand sanitizer. Soap and water are best to get rid of all bacteria and viruses, but the hand sanitizer is better than nothing at all.”

Myth: It’s cold out, I don’t need sunscreen.

The sun’s rays are just as strong in the winter months as they are in the other seasons. Snow and ice can reflect even more sunlight, up to twice as much. Grab the SPF 30 and put it on, regardless of the temperature. Don’t forget those sunglasses to keep your eyes safe as well.

I’ll just drink some alcohol to keep myself warm.

Although it may feel like drinking alcohol is making you warmer, it does not. Dr. Sonpal says that, “when you drink, the blood vessels dilate or get bigger, and blood flows to your skin and away from your internal organs. So, it may feel like you are getting warmer, but you are not.”

Myth: The Flu Shot Gives You the Flu

According to a new survey from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and Rite Aide, 44 percent of American women view the flu as a serious threat to their health. Yet nearly half (49 percent) do not intend to get a flu shot this year because they believe the vaccine can give them the flu. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the flu shot for anyone older than 6 months of age. Dr. Sonpal stresses that, “The shot does not contain a live virus, making catching the flu from it impossible.”

Winter weather makes you store fat and gain weight

Our bodies do not go into some kind of winter hibernation mode, stockpiling every ounce of fat to use for the lean times. It seems logical, like a throwback to our days living in caves foraging for food, but in reality, any weight gain comes from our winter habits. Dr. Sonpal points out that, “we tend to exercise less in winter. We eat more hearty meals and comfort foods, including more sugary snacks and desserts (especially around the holidays).”

Myth: You Lose Most Heat Through Your Head

The saying goes “we lose 90 percent of our body heat through our heads.”  But a 2006 study found that the head accounts for about 7 percent of the body’s surface area, and that heat loss in the region is fairly proportional, according to LiveScience.”Your head is another extremity, and it’s susceptible to cold, so you should wear a hat, but it doesn’t lose any more heat than another part of your body,” says Dr. Sonpal.

Myth: Chicken Soup Will Cure Colds

Many cultures teach us to drink warm liquids like tea, hot apple cider, and soups when we’re dealing with colds. It’s true that something like chicken soup may help soothe and ease congestion, but much like vitamin C, hot soup won’t do immediate wonders.

Myth: Being Cold Gives You a Cold

No matter what your grandma might have told you, spending too much time in the cold air doesn’t make you sick. One study found that healthy men who spent several hours in temperatures just above freezing had an increase in healthy, virus-fighting activity in their immune systems. In fact, you’re more likely to get sick indoors, where germs are easily passed.

Myth: Feed a cold, starve a fever

Dr. Sonpal says that, “This is another myth that comes from a time when people didn’t understand the science of body chemistry. The thought was that if you had a cold, food would warm you up. Conversely, if you had a high fever, not eating would cool you down. This is just patently bad medical advice. In both cases, good nutrition gives your body the fuel it needs to fight infections and recover from an illness. When you have a fever, your body is burning energy at a rapid rate, and that needs to be replenished. So, by all means feed your cold; but also feed your fever, or any other illness. Even if you have stomach issues, find a way to take in lost fluids and electrolytes.”
