Discover a Caregiver’s Unique Approach in “Navigating Alzheimer’s”

by Lisa Gal

To some, author Carolyn Cranwell’s book Navigating Alzheimer’s might seem an unusual topic to include in an award show gift bag, but what she has found is that everywhere she goes she meets people who have been touched by Alzheimer’s. There are currently an estimated 50 million people worldwide living with dementia, Alzheimer’s being its most common form. Long term care giving can be extremely painful. Commonly people feel: overwhelmed, lonely, stressed, exhausted, unappreciated, insignificant, invisible and even depressed. Cranwell helps you discover a caregiver’s unique approach to finding courage, hope, inner strength, long term resilience, happiness, fulfillment and peace, in her book Navigating Alzheimer’s – Survival Secrets of a Long Term Carer. We are excited to include her amazing book in our Hollywood Swag Bags this weekend honoring the nominees staying at the Four Seasons Hotel for the biggest red carpet event of the year. New York Actor Donald Paul Stays Stylish While Taking Over Hollywood

Actor Donald Paul is one of those guys who just stands out in each role he takes on. From working on shows such as Power, Seal Team, and Atlanta, to his upcoming projects like Quantico and The Good Fight, Mr. Paul’s style and acting abilities are one that need to be recognized.

It’s A Glam Thing sat down with the talented Mr. Paul, out of his home in New York, to find out more, plus ask him tips for all you ladies out there on what a celebrity wants to see you in style wise…

Nick Northstar: How would you describe your own personal style – both while at home and on the red carpet?

Donald Paul: I would say my style is eclectic. I like looking suave: a nice hat, button down shirt, and dress shoes. I’ll pair it with a denim jacket and jeans to keep it casual. Sometimes I’ll finish my look with glasses.

NN: You are based in New York, how is it being a guy in a city that is about to be filled up with gorgeous models and an incredible fashion scene everywhere?

DP: I love it!! There’s inspiration everywhere you look. I mean the models don’t hurt too.

NN: Are you big into fashion?

DP: Yeah, I like looking good and put together. It’s important to keep an eye on fashion, it helps to define your own style. I’m also big into layers. Theres just something about combining diffident things together attempting to make it make sense to me.

NN: Who are some of your favorite fashion designers or brands you like to wear?

DP: A vintage hat with my Levi jeans and a Jack Wills shirt… that’s a look right there!

NN: From a guy’s perspective, what type of fashion items do you like seeing the ladies wear (so they can take some hints/tips)?

DP: Show off and feeling good in your body! It doesn’t really matter to me but I can see when a woman’s confident in what they are wearing and I like that. Clothing that shows off the curves of your body, is always a sexy look too.

NN: What is your favorite Instagram filter? Or #NoFilter?

DP: Mmmmmm it totally depends on my mood. I’m into cream right now.

NN: What is your advice to anyone wanting to move and become an actor in New York?

DP: Be ready to work hard. New York is all talent. Save up so you can afford the lifestyle and classes. Also the weather is so inconsistent… Be ready for that too!

You can follow more of Donald’s style and journey via Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/donald_paul/

Les Belles Heures introduces Le Isole, a collection of iconic and timeless scarves designed in 12 Mediterranean shades and developed through exclusive in-house watercolor studies. They are offered in 3 formats, 40cm, 60cm and 90cm, to wear as a daily accessory with ease and nonchalance. They tell the stories of 12 pieces of time located in 12 different Mediterranean islands.

Designed in Paris, the scarves epitomize the essence of a chic and relaxed lifestyle in both menswear and womenswear through the combination of the best in Italian and French textile savoir-faire. Woven in the region of Treviso, Italy, in the silk modal signature twill blend. They are carefully hand rolled by luxury artisans in the region of Lyon, France. They have this unique feel that only craftsmanship can create.

How to wear Les Belles Heures scarves.

More comfortable than men are when it comes to scarves, women generally wear it with more ease and, above all, in a more daily way. Tied in their hair, at their ankle or effortlessly folded in the pocket of their loose summer shirts, women constantly invent new ways to wear their scarves and, through that, fully express their endless creativity.

The most adventurous men will play it on their foreheads or at the wrist to stand out.

Les Belles Heures scarf

Here are instructions to  care for  Les Belles Heures scarves.

Made of a twill blend composed of silk (40%) and modal (60%), the scarfs should be hand-washed with care, preferably with cold water. Once washed, let it air dry flat on you drier. You can also dry clean them or, should you be in the rush, machine-wash them at 30° or below.

Do not, at any time, tumble dry them as it would damage the fibers as well as the hand-rolled edges.

NuFace – run, don’t walk to get this device

NuFace, try it and you won’t believe your own face! Most of the time when a product says it will revitalize your face, lift your skin and wipe away your wrinkles, I don’t believe the ads! But after a friend had been using the NuFace for two years, I finally decided to try it. I bought my NuFace Mini from Ulta. It was on sale with the primer for $159. It usually retails for $199.00. The larger size NuFace is I believe is $325. The mini, honestly, is all that you need. It’s an FDA-approved micro-current treatment device.

nuface

I’ve tried a lot of beauty products, skincare lines, serums, you name it, over the years, and I am telling you, try this! The instructions say that you do it for five minutes a day for 60 days and at least five days a week. At first that scared me a little, but honestly with amount of money I spend on skincare products, I thought, hey, I can do this.

The results are no short of amazing. This tiny little device pulses UV light, and you do it maybe 5, maybe 10 min daily, and it literally lifts your skin. I have a sagging jawline which really bugs me. So let’s take a look.

Here is my BEFORE jaw line.

Julia Davis before

Now, for how it works.

First, cleanse the skin so there are no oils on the surface.

Next, I applied the primer. Apply it in a mask-like layer. I actually also went to Dermstore.com and got a primer there called 24K GoldPrimer which has a mess-free brush applicator. It is a lightweight, leave-on formula, contains an anti-aging 24K Gold Complex and is oil-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free.

Then all you do is turn the device onto the highest setting that you can bear. I turned it onto HIGH and don’t feel a thing, but work your way into it. Then you gently guide the device up your face and  up your jawline, up your cheeks, up under your chin if you want, and upwards on your forehead. I was mainly focusing on definition in my cheekbones.

Here is the ‘after’ photo. You will see improvement in the brow, cheekbone, and jawbone. Use five min a day, five times a week for 60 days. After that, use 2 to 3 times a week to maintain results. For more information go to www.mynuface.com. There are instructional videos online that I suggest you watch prior to your treatment.

Julia Davis after nuface

The result is a true lift. I am not kidding.  My aesthetician was doing my nails and thought I was much younger than my true age.

Bottom line is to run, don’t walk and go get this device. One cautionis that I have read online reviews that say that it may decrease the length of your Botox treatments if you have them. I’ve read others that say after using this device they no longer use Botox.

The manufacturer also makes a NuFace Body. I’m dying to get that one next!

Japanese Culture Brings you Chardonnay in a Can

by Lisa Gal

Chu-Hi is an alcoholic drink that originated in Eastern Tokyo in the late 1940’s. Back then, Chu-Hi was made by mixing shochu, carbonated water and lemon juice. The idea came from Highball and it was originally called “shochu highball”. It was later shortened to Chu-Hi. Today, Chu-Hi is made with Shochu and your choice of carbonated fruit juice. It is sold as a canned drink and a staple alcohol beverage in Japan. Using Italian Chardonnay, their Chu-Hi White Grape combines the refreshing fragrance of Chardonnay at 5% alcohol for you to enjoy. Their Chu-Hi Grapefruit is made with Mediterranean Grapefruits and at 6% alcohol, you can enjoy the refreshing crisp taste at home. Sangaria has established a rich Japanese beverage culture in the United States and they continue to introduce their one of a kind beverages for all ages to enjoy. We are excited to include them in our Hollywood Swag Bags being gifted to the nominees, talent and guests staying at The Four Seasons Hotel next month for the biggest award show of the year!

Dr. John Moore, Jr., DDS, founder 33smile.com

When the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry asked people what they’d most like to improve about their smile, the most common response was whiter teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists also found that nearly 90% of patients request tooth whitening.

But with several different teeth whitening products and services are on the market, very few give long-lasting or satisfying results: while some are damaging to the teeth and gums, others offer a short-term solution that only make teeth somewhat whiter:

  • Teeth whitening pastes and mouthwashes or rinses, the gentlest treatment, good for general dental hygiene but not much for whitening results.
  • Whitening strips, which unlike toothpastes and mouthwashes, are full of peroxides and bleaches, so the results are more noticeable. You may see whiter teeth from the first application but since these strips are full of chemicals you need to be cautious how long you leave them on – sensitivity post-treatment is common but shouldn’t be unbearable.
  • Whitening lights are pretty useless. UV lights usually used in dentist’s offices to speed the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide during whitening, but they do nothing on their own.

Dr. John Moore, Jr., DDS, founder of Cosmetic Dental Associates, says over-the counter treatments are satisfactory for a short-term slight improvement.

33smile.com/smile-gallery/

33smile.com/smile-gallery/

“Most people won’t see much difference in the actual whiteness of their teeth unless they use them for a long time or use professionally applied whitening gels. Still, they are a temporary fix.” – Dr. Moore

The most satisfying results come from professional cosmetic dentistry, with prep less veneers offering a non-invasive long-term solution. Made of ultra thin porcelain, matched exactly to the color that is desired and laid right over the teeth, the results are permanent white, movie star quality teeth. Prep less veneers can be adhered to the fronts of the teeth without the removal of healthy tooth enamel. The process is safe, fast, and highly effective.

An increasing need for more aesthetic appeal in the field of dentistry is being observed globally. This has generated the development of a wide range of techniques and procedures that cater to specific needs of the patients. Not all cosmetic dental procedures are equally successful, however. 50% of Dr. Moore’s practice comprises the correction of botched dental jobs.

Dr. Moore advises potential consumers to fully vet their chosen provider when seeking a brighter smile.

What questions does a patient need to ask of a potential cosmetic dentist?

Does the dentist or lab tech have a lab to to make rapid corrections and or color adjustments right with the patient previewing the cosmetic effect. The key question would be, “Can I see the veneers on my teeth before you put them on and how long will it take to make adjustments if needed?”

Next you will definitely want to see the cosmetic dentist’s photos and videos  of the work he says he can do for you. All legitimate cosmetic dentists take photos of their work so ask for them. This will tell you more than you can possibly know about who is going to create a new smile for you that will meet or exceed your expectations. Make sure there are many cases ( the more the better) and that they are the work of the person that is actually going to do the work.

How much experience does your cosmetic dentist have. Too many dentists think the term “Cosmetic Dentistry” is just a marketing term. We have done 10’s of thousands of cosmetic cases for well over 30 years. To this day we are still learning about fascinating new breakthroughs in aesthetics, materials and techniques. As an experienced source of cosmetic dentistry we have learned the most when correcting botched cosmetic cases (almost 50% of our cases). If you can be strong enough to ask these questions, “How many? and How long have you been a cosmetic dentist?” you may well save yourself the experience a repair of a botched case.

What is the best way to select a potential cosmetic dentist?

First check the internet for information about the cosmetic dentist or his office. There you should be able to see their before and after photos, videos of their work and testimonials from their patients. Make sure these are not stock dentists photos and that they are the actual work of the Doctor you want. The more the better because this will clearly show the quality of their work and the amount of their experience. It takes a long time and many successful cases to amass a large collection of great before and afters.

After you find your best candidates the consult is the next step. When you talk to your potential Cosmetic Dentist ask the above questions and see if you like the answers and most of all do you like the dentist. If you do, you’re probably going to do well. If not, then move on to your next candidate.

Ariela Wertheimer, How to Brighten Your Life with Color

Ariela Wertheimer presents ways to incorporate color into your surroundings to help brighten your mood during the cold winter months.

Ariela Wertheimer, The Artist

Ariela Wertheimer, The Artist

With cold weather well underway for most of the North East, the winter blues can be daunting. Some people may find themselves feeling more tired and lethargic than usual.

As an international artist, I’ve been exposed to different climates and cultures, and I understand how easily a mood can change for the better and energy levels can pick up when bright colors are incorporated into your environment.

When I moved to Tel Aviv in 2013, the new atmosphere encouraged me to look for inspiration around me. The city’s urban rhythm invigorated me with energy to create, photograph, and paint, and elements like fences, construction metals, colors and neon lights served as a type of urban art – a pop art that felt young and fresh.

If you’re not in the city, there are other ways to liven up your environment. Whether it be working vibrant hues into key pieces of your home furnishings, or using a brightly colored paint to create an accent wall in your foyer, colors can help break up the monotony of the long winter months and uplift your mood.

Ariela has a few more ways to brighten your space.

  • Pick a Bright Piece of Art to Tie Together a Room: Similar to my Light Box Portraits, colorful art pieces are key to brightening a space. Many artists use bright colors in their work, so find a piece that speaks to you and your tastes.
  • Use Mirrors to Double the Sunlight in a Room: There is no better friend to a small space than a well-placed mirror. For expanding walls, breaking up visual clutter, or amplifying light, let mirrors be the tool that solves your design dilemmas.
  • Shiny Paint or Matte Paint? When choosing your favorite kind of paint, remember to check for the level of shine. The higher the shine, the more durable the paint will be. Oddly enough, glossy walls can create a glare while matte surfaces have the ability to reflect light in every direction.
  • Pick Bright Paint Colors for Your Walls: Whether you’re wondering what color to paint the office or you’re looking to redesign your living space, the colors you choose are important. Studies have shown that colors have a direct impact on human emotion and behavior. Wall color can actually change how a person perceives temperature.

Specific colors you choose to incorporate into your space can evoke emotional responses. When trying to create a calm environment, blue has always been a favorite color of mine. This is a common solution, as blue is generally used as a soothing and relaxing hue because it’s often affiliated with a clear sky or the sea. Don’t be afraid to use blue in the more stressful areas of your life—like your office.

If you’re looking to develop a more creative atmosphere in your space, then green is your color. Research has linked green with broader thinking and happier thoughts. Allow a positive association with nature to affect your décor and the overall mood in your home. Green is especially great for brightening rooms with mostly neutral tones.

Yellow has always been used to represent the sun and brightness. No need to paint every wall yellow, but use your love for the color to pick out a vase or rug for the center of the room. These accents will enhance a livelier vibe to brighten your days.

Give yourself an energy boost with your décor and your surroundings overall. Like your environment, one of the best things about color is that it is ever-changing. If something doesn’t work for your style, change it. Trial and error is used by artists on an everyday basis. Through my experience, I’ve learned what colors I am drawn to and what accents I find to be appealing. Everyone is different. Let light into your life during the darkest days.

Ariela Wertheimer is an international artist based in Tel Avivi, Israel.

Ariela is scheduled to exhibit at Artexpo New York this spring. Her art incorporates a range of bright colors and focus on self-reflection – encouraging the viewer to reflect and improve their outlook.

How to Calm Crazy Waves and Unruly Curls International Curl Expert Shares Tips

For those with naturally wavy, curly hair of all coils and textures it may seem like an endless battle to find ways to tame the mane. Some may turn to relaxers, weekly blowouts or extensions. Others just want to master their natural hair in whatever mood it seems to be in. To help girls get a handle on their curls we connected with Maya Smith, founder of The Doux salon and product line of the same name both specializing in making the absolute most of the natural hair you’re born with. When it comes to healthy sculptured, cool looking curls of all types, Maya’s two decades of experience with curls worldwide makes her a true expert. Here she offers tips on how to calm crazy waves and unruly curls.

#1: My naturally wavy hair is flat at the top and then waves start in the middle with tighter curls at the back. HELP!

Genetics determine curl pattern and density. It’s totally normal, in fact, quite common for several different textures to exist on the same head of hair. These inconsistencies can cause the hair to look uneven, and are most apparent once the hair has dried. I created The Doux’s Mousse Def, to help define waves and curls in the less curly areas, and to combat frizz in the areas that are tightly coiled. To balance the look of curly and wavy hair, we recommend using a combo of a mousse on the straighter areas, and then a balm like The Doux’s Bonita Afro Balm Texture Cream for added stretch and control in the tighter areas. The goal here is to keep hair shiny, touchable, and soft. If shrinkage or frizzing remains an issue, don’t underestimate the power of a great haircut. Awesome products combined with a professionally-shaped set of layers is my signature Rx for accentuating curls that vary in texture.

#2: I have curly hair and let it dry naturally. The second it rains, I get frizzy at the roots. I find myself revolving my hairstyle around the weather report. HELP!

Thirsty hair will try to “drink up” moisture in the air if it’s not adequately hydrated.

The key to eliminating frizz due to humidity exposure is to make sure that the hair is thoroughly conditioned before styling products are applied. This exact problem is what inspired me to create a solution in the form of a Fresh Rinse Moisturizing Conditioner, followed by The Light Shine Mist helps to hydrate and stabilize the cuticle, making it less prone to reversion. For added control at the roots, we apply a small amount of Bonita Afro Balm, which is our secret weapon for keeping curly hair from swelling in harsh weather conditions. These products can be found at select Target stores nationwide and at TheDoux.com.

#3: I often wear my curly hair slicked back into a tight low bun or ponytail. Will this damage my hair?

Style in moderation. Traction alopecia is a major epidemic among women with textured hair. This is typically the result of too much tension being applied to scalp for an extended period of time, and usually occurs due to hair styling such as braids, extensions, and tight ponytails. To avoid irreversible thinning of the hair, it’s important to avoid hairstyles that place constant pressure on hair, particularly in the temple and nape areas. Ponytails and “slicked” styles should be taken down at night, and tight accessories, such as headbands or scrunchies should be worn less frequently.

#4: I wear my naturally kinky hair twisted and braided. How long could I leave this style in and how best to shampoo my hair while in this style?

I recommend shampooing once per week for hair with fine-to-medium density. I urge clients with high-density or extremely long hair, not to exceed more than 10 days without cleansing the hair and scalp. This helps eliminate bacterial growth that causes itching, flaking, and dandruff on the scalp. We use The Doux’s Sucka Free Moisturizing Shampoo to remove product build-up and dead skill cells, and Fresh Rinse Moisturizing Conditioner to soften, hydrate, and balance the hair’s pH. We’ve incorporated Shea Butter and Sea Silk to smooth the hair shaft and aid in moisture retention.

#5: What are some ingredients to avoid that many products for curly hair contain? Why is this damaging?

Petroleum-based “grease,” as well as products that contain mineral oil may be old-school favorites, but are often the cause of dry hair. Heavy products that aren’t water soluble can coat the hair shaft, disrupting the hair’s natural ability to retain moisture. This dryness may go nearly undetected, because the hair is covered in product, however, the underlying dehydration causes hair to be brittle and stubborn. We recommend cream-based products that shampoo out easily, and allow the hair to “breathe.”About Maya Smith:
