Me, tomorrow on Studio 10

Tomorrow on Studio 10 Tampa, St. Pete I explain why these Fall power fruits work so well in skin care formulations: Pumpkin, Grapefruit, Green Apple, Pomegranate, Fig and Pear. Check my segment out!

Pumpkin- The enzymes (a group of complex proteins) in pumpkin make it a safe and natural exfoliator which is alternative to chemical peels. Also, loaded with antioxidants pumpkin protects skin cells from free radicals such as pollution, poor diet etc. The oil from the pumpkin seeds is uniquely beneficial for skin as well. It is rich in essential fatty acids that regulate proper skin sebum (oil) production, which makes it useful for both oily/acne-prone skin and dry skin.

Grapefruit- Grapefruit is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, when applied topically, the grapefruit extract can provide an array of anti-aging benefits like evening skin tone and fighting off free radicals and it promotes the production of collagen. It is also great for oily and acne prone skin, grapefruit increases the pH in the skin which will reduce acne. If suffering from rosacea do not use citrus. If taking prescription meds consult a physician.

Green Apple- Green apples are another great anti-aging ingredient that keeps the elasticity in your skin and youthful looking by preventing wrinkles and texture in the skin.Green apple is great for the hair by working wonders to fix dandruff. It is also a recognized remedy for strengthening the locks, enhancing hair growth and preventing hair loss.

Pomegranate- Pomegranate makes for a great moisturizer. Pomegranate promotes the production of collagen and elastinto give strength and support to the skin. It will slow down the formation of wrinkles and any age related “markings”. Pomegranate can also minimize the risk of developing skin cancer.

Figs- Figs are fully loaded with skin protecting and nourishing antioxidants to help soften the skin. It contains enzymes that help break down dead, flaky cells on the skin’s surface. Figs also have moisturizing properties similar to the skin’s own natural moisture, making it an excellent conditioning agent as well.

Celebrity Beauty Guru, Skyy Hadley Shares her DIY Beauty Secrets

image001-28

Pumpkins are more than just for carving on Halloween, they’re rich in vitamins and nutrients and can do wonders for the skin! Celebrity beauty guru, Skyy Hadley, shares some ways to incorporate pumpkins into your beauty routine this fall.

image002-18

DIY Face Mask
Pumpkins are rich in Vitamins A and C and contain various enzymes that help nourish and brighten the skin making them perfect to use in facials. Below is an easy recipe to create your own pumpkin face mask at home.
*Mix one can of pureed pumpkin in a bowl
*Stir in a cup of plain yogurt, 4-5 tablespoons of honey and a 1/4 teaspoon olive oil
*Wash face and while face is still moist apply the mask using your fingers in an upward motion
*Let sit for no more than 10 minutes and remove with warm water and washcloth
*There will be leftover mask so seal it in a closed Tupperware container or have a girls’ spa night!

Blemish Treatment
Pumpkin contains the acne fighting vitamins E and T (aka Torulitine) and can aid in reducing pore size and preventing the appearance of pimples, blackheads and blemishes. Cut open a fresh pumpkin and slice it you would a cantaloupe. Rub the fleshy side against your face after cleansing twice a day for healthier looking skin.

Moisturizer
Natural enzymes found in pumpkins are great for hydrating, soothing and softening dry, cracked hands and feet. Keep the fleshy/stringy pumpkin parts you pull out when carving and work a small amount into your hands (as if you’re washing your hands) and rinse with warm water. Your hands will instantly be smooth and soft.
*TIP: Mix 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree in a small bowl with 2 tablespoons of Vaseline and apply to extra dry heels and cover with socks overnight for an ultimate moisturizing treatment.

IS IT TIME TO TOSS YOUR MAKEUP?

(Note: These are standards that may differ depending on the quality, storage and ingredients of the products)

Cosmetic companies are not required to put expiration dates on beauty products although some brands do list them, most don’t. Using expired makeup can lead to serious skin irritation, breakouts, and infection.
So when is it time to let go of make up?

False eyelashes – Toss false eyelashes after every 3rd use!
Make up Brushes – If cared for properly, they can last forever!
Lipstick- Keep it for up to 2 years maybe more!
Foundation- Toss it after 6 months to 1 year.
Sunscreen – Toss it in 6 months to 1 year
Lip Liner Pencil – Keep it for up to 3 years if sharpened regularly
Eye Liner Pencil – Keep if for up to 3 years if sharpened regularly
Moisturizers and creams – 1 year
Disposable Make up sponges – Toss after 1 month
Mascara – Toss after 3-4 months
Eyeshadow – Powder, Keep up to 3 years / Cream, Toss after 6 months
Powders – Keep up to 2 years
Concealers – Keep to 12 months
Nail Polish – Toss at 18 months
Perfume – Leave that one up to your noise!

There are some products out there to help extend the shelf life of cosmetic products like The Every Beauty Brand Beauty Spatula. It is reusable and washable and works on any shape or size bottle or container. Use this instead of fingers to remove product from jars and bottles. You’ll halt the growth of bacteria and it even helps save up to 25% on every beauty bottle and jar by retrieving the very last trapped product inside.

Koren Zander Pro Brush Soaps are deep conditioning brush soaps that are are rich in luxurious, deep moisturizing and conditioning oils including Argan and Brazilian Passion fruit Seed Oil. They are anti-bacterial. Foaming, moisturizing, and formulated with 5 different conditioners, these brush soaps will render any makeup brush super clean, and super soft. They can be used on on both Natural and Synthetic fibers. Directions: Wet your dirty brush and simply lather on one side of the soap using a back-and-forth sweeping motion, then use the loofah side to deep-clean and loosen makeup residue. Rinse, reshape the bristles, and dry the brushes flat.

These are some things we can do to help us remember when to toss our bad cosmetics?

Use a Sharpie type marker and write the date you bought the item on it’s container or box.

Keep a small notebook in your cosmetic drawer or medicine cabinet and note the dates of purchase there.

Some final tips include:

Use your nose and treat your cosmetics like you treat the food in your refrigerator, If it doesn’t smell right, toss it!

and…..Don’t share your make up items with anyone!

Redken’s NYFW SS 2014 Marc Jacobs Recap

Redken Logo

Marc Jacobs

Spring – Summer 2014

guido headshot

Hair by Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Creative Consultant Guido aligned the hair this season with the youthful, carefree style of Marc’s collection. Once the wigs were lightened, Guido’s team went back and darkened the roots to replicate regrowth. From the color to the choppy, somewhat messy cut, this look screams youthful nonconformity at its best.

“Why wigs? I suppose Marc and I really liked the uniformity that only wigs can create on the runway. This look was designed to encompass the type of free-spirited girl that Marc loves and ultimately designs for. She is somewhat punk and boyish, which is why the wig is bowl-shaped and asymmetrically cut around the face. It is almost as if she took the scissors to her own hair, completely confident and entirely in tune with her own personal style.”

Guido, Redken Creative Consultant
Redken Products Used:

guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam

control addict 28 high hold hairspray

forceful 23 super strength finishing spray

Guts10 ControlAddict28

Create the Look:
  1. Apply guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam to dry hair from roots to ends and comb through until hair is completely saturated.
  2. Divide hair into two sections (top and bottom) in the back. Make three or four parts if hair is very thick.
  3. Clip the bottom section down and out of the way, and then using a finishing brush; start to brush the top section flat against the head, following the round of the head in one direction. Repeat this with each section making sure it’s very clean and neat-looking when finished.
  4. Blow dry hair until completely dry. Apply control addict 28 high hold hairspray and then place wig cap on so it completely covers the head.
  5. Once the wig is secure, apply forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to add texture
