How to Clean and Sanitize Curling Irons

Curling irons will last a very long time if cared for properly.  Removing product buildup, storing properly so they don’t fall and get scratched or break, and minding cords for safe electrical flow are all important.  Sam Villa, Co-founder/Chief Creative Officer of Sam Villa and Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken, shares a DIY recipe for how to clean and sanitize curling irons properly.  See it here.

“When you see your iron start to turn yellow or get spots, it’s time to clean it.  Gels, sprays and heat protectant residue can build up quickly.  Stylists have to clean tools after ever use in the salon, but when at home, you can do a weekly cleaning if using the iron on a daily basis.”

Daily (Stylists):

  • Mix warm water and dish soap in a tub.
  • Dip cloth into mixture and wipe down the entire iron from handle to tip.  Make sure iron is cool and detach the tong if it is removable.
  • Dry with a cloth.

Weekly (Stylists and Consumers):

  • Mix warm water and dish soap in a tub.
  • Dip cloth into mixture and wipe down the entire iron from handle to tip.  Make sure iron is cool and detach the tong if it is removable.
  • Add baking soda and toothpaste to the soap and water to thicken and add scrubbing power.
  • Apply the mixture to the barrel and tong with a brush and leave on for at least 15 minutes (can also sit overnight).
  • Wipe clean with a cloth.

Spot Cleaning:

  • Use a cotton pad with rubbing alcohol to wipe clean and sanitize.
  • Apply baking soda and more alcohol to the pad and scrub stubborn spots.  The scouring power is strong enough to remove most burned-on stains, yet gentle enough not to damage the surface.  A gentle sponge can also be used for more abrasive scrubbing.

“And use the iron kickstand, otherwise your iron can tip over and melt things causing even more buildup,” adds Villa who designed his namesake Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Curling Iron and  Wand with a convenient removable tong for easy cleaning.

Halloween Look: Medusa

 It’s creepy crawly season and what hairdressers doesn’t LOVE a Halloween look?  Karla Valenzuela, Sam Villaâ Ambassador and Redken Artist @kolor.me. karlaa, shares a fun look for inspiration.  “I was inspired by J-Lo’s high buns for this Medusa look.  I wanted to give the idea of snakes by waving the hair in a snake-like way and weaving it throughout golden snakes,” explains Valenzuela.

How to: Medusa

  1. Apply Redken Water Wax 03, smooth hair with a Sam Villa® Artist Series Polishing Paddle Brush, gather a high ponytail and tie a butchers knot with sewing elastic to secure.
  2. Wrap extension wefts around the ponytail and secure with pins.
  3. Insert a large donut form by pulling the ponytail through the hole and secure with bobby pins.
  4. Spray Redken Iron Shape 11 on all the ponytail hair for thermal protection and hold.
  5. Wave hair by alternating between the Sam Villa® Pro Results Single-Waver and Double-Waver to give a variety of texture.
  6. Wrap hair around the donut form to create an oversized bun. Leaving some strands hanging to show the waves.
  7. Embellish the bun with rubber snakes from a craft store sprayed gold. Make “snake pins” by poking holes through the snakes and insert open end pins through them.
  8. Apply Redken Hardwear 16 to baby hairs and tendrils and use a small detail comb to create a wave that frames the face and mimics the shape of the snakes.
  9. Stick on small gems around the face framing waves.
  10. Finish with Redken Triple Take 32 for strong hold.

How to Clean and Polish Leather Shoes

Leather shoes can make all the difference to any man’s outfit. All too often, you can make all the right choices when it comes to putting your outfit together, but if your shoes are scruffy or even worse, dirty, it can bring the entire look down. Polishing your leather shoes will not only make your outfits look amazingly finished off, but it’s also a great way to keep them in better condition and make sure that they last for as long as possible. 

Why Shine Your Leather Shoes?

Leather shoes are a stylish addition to any outfit and every man should own at least one or two pairs of them. Another reason to go for leather shoes is that with the right care and maintenance, they can last a really long time. Cleaning and polishing your shoes will keep them in perfect condition for longer and make sure that they are always looking fantastic, no matter what you decide to wear them with. 

What Do You Need to Clean and Shine Leather Shoes?

To get started with cleaning and shining your shoes, you’re going to need some essentials. These are:

  • Small brush: You can get a specially designed brush or use an old toothbrush to remove dirt from the edge strip of the shoe and apply polish in those harder-to-reach places. 
  • Horsehair brush: These are used to brush the surface of the skin. Horsehair is soft, allowing you to clean the shoe without damaging or scratching it. 
  • Polishing Cloth: A flannel is a good option, or you can use an old T-shirt if you prefer. 
  • Clean Cloth or Rag: Use this to clean dirt off the shoe and wipe any excess polish away. 
  • Shoe Polish: You can either use a clear polish or a coloured polish on your shoes. Saphir shoe polish is a great option to go with. A coloured polish will not only shine the shoe but also help to fix any minor damage to the leather.  

Cleaning and Polishing

To start with, remove the laces and insert supports into the shoe to keep their shape and prevent wrinkles. Use your horsehair brush to sweep away any dirt on the surface, especially on the seams. Then, apply a small amount of polish to your cloth and use a circular motion to wipe it on the surface of the shoe until it begins shining. It’s best to apply the polish in multiple thin layers to restore the moisture of the folds, rather than applying a lot of polish in one go. Finally, apply the polish with a small brush to the heel and piping. Allow it to dry for around ten minutes. To finish, use a small amount of clean water to make the fabric slightly moist, and apply a thin, even layer of shoe wax before polishing and shining the shoes in a circular motion. Let your shoes dry, then put the laces back on. 

With regular cleaning and polishing, you can achieve a suave, shiny look for your leather shoes and keep them in great condition for longer.

Lots of Foils Are the Key to a Bright Blonde with Minimum Contrast

“I see a lot of influencers posting about using less foils for maximum impact, but there is still a time and place for lots of foils.  Guests who want full coverage blonde with minimum contrast simply need more foils,” explains Blake Reed Evans, Sam Villa Ambassador and owner of Shear Art Salon (Tampa, FL) @blakereedevans. 

“The key to this look is paper thin slices. The thinner slice you take, the higher lift you will get to achieve maximum brightness. I also used predominantly vertical lines across the part and horizontal foils on the side to increase coverage. I did a few diagonals around the face to follow the hairline, “explains Evans.

  • Color: Redken Flash Lift Power 9 and 30 Volume 1:1.5. Gloss: Shades EQ Bonder Inside Clear.
  • Do not leave more than 1/8” between foils. The less foils, the more contrast.
  • Style: Blow dry hair and use the Sam Villa Signature Series Professional Curling Iron 1”  on the color treated setting. A color-treated setting is KEY after a blonding service because hair is fragile.  This setting (392°) is great because anything over 400° can actually remove haircolor molecules from the hair.
