How To Build The Right Skincare Routine 

 

Routines are the foundation of making changes. If your skin is due for some changes, you can start by evaluating your current skincare routine, or by starting a new one. A lot of people skip out on a proper skincare routine simply because they do not know where to start. This guide will introduce you to the four basic steps of a great skincare routine and provide a little advice on which products to use. 

First, let’s cover some basics. There are three general steps to a great skincare routine. Cleanse, treat, and moisturize. Cleansing and moisturizing are pretty obvious, but what does treating your skin even mean? This part of your skincare routine will involve using creams or serums to address specific skincare problems you are struggling with. This is where some research on your part will be necessary as well as some evaluation of what your skincare goals really are. Treatment is the one step that will really make a difference over time. 

Also, keep in mind that a good skincare routine will be a two-part project; your morning routine and your night routine. Let’s jump right in. 

Wash Your Face

The first step in your morning skincare routine is always to wash your face. This step clears away dirt, dead skin cells, extra oil, and anything else that would dull your skin and clog your pores. It is important to be gentle with this step. Washing your skin too much or too often can lead to skin damage. You should also make sure you are using a cleanser that is gentle enough for your particular skin type. If you use a cleanser that is too harsh for your skin, you could start to break down your skin’s natural barriers. This can lead to worse skin issues. 

Those who have dry or overly sensitive skin should only wash their face at night. For morning cleansing, you would only need to rinse your face with water. 

Apply Toner

This next step is an often-overlooked part of skincare routines. The reason this step is often skipped is because it is not a must, but it is still a great step to add if you really want to change the appearance of your skin. Applying a toner refreshes your skin, eliminates any hiding debris and can balance the pH levels of your skin. This is important for acne-prone skin. 

If you do have issues with breakouts, then you will want to look for a toner that has salicylic acid. This is a professional-grade acne-fighting ingredient that can really cut down on your breakouts and improve the appearance of your skin. 

If you are not prone to breakouts, but rather have dry, sensitive skin, then you will want to look for a toner that is aimed at hydrating skin. Hydrating toners are sometimes called a skin essence. 

Apply A Serum 

This is the crucial treatment step that often gets skipped. Remember, if you are hoping to improve your skin in some way, the treatment step is important. You will need to evaluate your current skin and determine what skincare goals you have in mind. For example, if you have dark circles under your eyes, you may want to focus on treatments that lighten that part of the face. Once you have determined what your skincare goal will be, you can then start researching products that can help in that area. 

If you are not sure of what your skincare goal is, or if you are already pretty satisfied with the appearance of your skin, you should still use a skin serum such as a vitamin C serum. A vitamin C serum is good for all skin types and helps to reverse a lot of damage that our skin endures through exposure to the sun and toxins in our environment. 

Along with serum for your entire face, this is also the step where you should use an eye cream. The skin around the eye and under the eye is very different than the skin of the rest of your face and body. This skin needs its own special treatment. This is especially true if you are over thirty. Be sure to find an eye cream that addresses your particular issues such as dark circles, or baggy skin. 

Apply Moisturizer 

The last step should be a moisturizer. You should always choose a lightweight moisturizer unless you have noticeably dry skin. The skin tends to dry out as we age. In general, lotions and gels are lighter, while creams are heavier. It is often recommended that you use two different moisturizers. One is designed for morning use to be worn under makeup and one for nighttime use. 

A night cream will provide your overnight moisture treatment. You will want to use products that contain ceramides or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients work to retain moisture. 

During your morning routine, you will also want to use a sunscreen product if your daytime moisturizer does not contain sunscreen. Protecting your skin from the sun is an essential part of your skincare routine.

With Memorial Day fast approaching, many are even more focused than usual on their bodies and getting them into tip-top shape at the gym. While exercise has multiple benefits, very often workouts and great looking skin don’t go together.  We turned to Dr. Michael Horn, a Board-Certified Chicago plastic surgeon and anti-aging expert, to give tips on how you can get the six-pack and still have glowing, acne free skin.

Sweat Itself Does Not Cause Acne 

First, “It is important to know that sweat itself does not cause acne,” says Dr. Horn. He explains, “Professional sportsmen are predisposed to accumulating dirt and bacteria in their pores during and after workout periods. If left without proper cleansing this can cause worsening in skin conditions like acne and dermatitis.”

Avoid Makeup

These days a gym visit almost doesn’t seem to “count” unless one posts it on Instagram.  This often leads women to wear makeup to the gym. Just don’t. Dr. Horn says, “Most makeup will clog pores by not allowing the skin to breathe naturally during workouts. A better option is a tinted moisturizer if you are self-conscious about your skin tone.”

SPF

If you’re going to be outdoors, apply a light moisturizer with SPF to keep your skin protected from UV rays.  Make sure to choose a lightweight product as not to clog up your pores. Look for words like “non-comedogenic” or “oil-free” to know that your sunblock won’t cause acne.

Don’t Touch Your Face at the Gym!

Cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, these all breed bacteria. Touching them and them wiping beads of sweat off your face is a sure way to spread bacteria that can create new breakouts. Make sure to bring a towel for this instead of using your hands.

A Flowing Mane of Hair is Not Your Friend During a Workout

When you are working out it is a good idea to keep hair out of your face by styling it into a bun or rocking a dry and clean sweatband. Sweat and dirt can get transferred from your hair onto your face. If you haven’t washed your hair and you use hairspray or other hair products, these can also splash onto your pores along with perspiration. This can cause irritations and breakouts.

How to Choose the Right Gym Towel

An old rag won’t be effective at absorbing sweat. However, you don’t want a gym towel that is as absorbent as a bath towel you would use to dry off your body after a shower at home. Dr. Horn says that “The gym towel should be a happy medium — absorbent enough to keep your face dry during a workout, but not so thick it clings to bacteria even after a wash.”

Wear Loose and Comfortable Gym Clothes

“Spandex is tight clothing that can lead to skin infections from bacteria and fungi,” warns Dr. Horn. “Wear loose attire that will also help wick away the sweat preventing it from being absorbed by your skin.” Just google “sweat-wicking workout clothes.”

Reduce the Redness

Calm down a flushed face with your redness control remedy made up of a little bit of iced green tea and a spray bottle. “You’ll cool down your skin and add in a few extra anti-oxidants in the process,” says Dr. Horn.

After your workout

Dr. Horn stresses, “Wash your face immediately after your workout. You don’t want a mixture of dirt, oil, and bacteria clinging to your skin, affecting its pH, and clogging your pores. If you are exercising in a park where there is no sink, bring cleansing facial wipes with you.”

Moisturize Post Workout

No matter your type of skin, after cleansing you must moisturize. Dr. Horn says that “Skipping this essential step can unknowingly dehydrate your skin causing your oil-producing glands to overcompensate by producing an oversupply of oil. Use a moisturizer that’s been produced for your specific skin type and condition immediately after cleansing for the best results.”

Skip the Hot Shower

Sure, your muscles are sore, and you’re in the mood for a hot shower after a workout. Dr. Horn points out that, “Hot water strips skin of vital oils, leaving you with dry, itchy, dull skin.” Exfoliate more often to avoid “Bacne.” Breakouts on your back or chest are particularly common for “gym rats.” To avoid this, use a gentle body scrub three times a week. Dr. Horn says, “This will keep pores clear and skin functioning well.”

Save Your “Superhero” Products for Night

Save serious treatment products for bedtime. Dr. Horn points out that, “Even seemingly normal skin can experience much more sensitivity right after a workout.  You may want to wait until redness decreases by bedtime to use your super-active acne or anti-aging treatment products.”

Since you need your students’ respect, it is important to dress in a manner that inspires respect. Make sure that you are as comfortable as possible, though, by choosing the most comfortable shoes and styles that are classroom appropriate.

A Detailed Planner

When you are in charge of a classroom of students, it is imperative that you remain as organized as possible. A simple day planner isn’t going to cut it in these circumstances. Rather, you should get a detailed planner for yourself that will give you the space and resources that you need in order to stay on top of things.

Planners with pages that allow you to see your month at a glance, in addition to providing plenty of space for your daily schedule, are a good start. Don’t be shy about getting a planner that is on the bigger side as well. You will surely need the space and pages to accommodate everything that you need to keep tabs on for the entire year.

Storage

In the name of staying as organized as possible, you should also look to incorporate as much practical storage into your classroom as possible. Keeping your classroom tidy and free from clutter is an essential part of helping you and your students remain focused throughout the long school days that lie ahead.

Everyone is a supermodel

Photos can be very deceptive at the best of times, with lighting and angles doing a lot of work. When you add in the concept of filters on top of this, they are even more so.

What started as a fun thing to do on social media, filters have turned negative very quickly. Where you once were could just make yourself look like a cat or just something funny. You can now completely change the structure of your face. 

This can be harmful in two ways. Firstly, when you see yourself with these filters on all the time, you risk not liking how your actual face looks in real life. Secondly, when you see everyone’s photos online and don’t know a filter is being used, it can start to mess up your idea of beauty and what’s real.

Considering the idea that they may be using a filter each time you see a selfie is a good start to combating the feelings these edits can create. 

Everyone’s an expert

Before social media, the only opinions that you may have heard is from loved ones or those you spoke to on a regular basis. Social media has opened the world up to each other’s opinions, and while it can be a good thing, as you find like-minded people, it can also have a major downside.

When everyone is airing their opinions to the world, it’s easy to feel that you aren’t as informed as anyone else with the amount of time the average person spends on social media. The likelihood of the situation, though is that they probably aren’t as clued up on a situation as they are letting on.

Taking each opinion with a pinch of salt now and again is vital for healthy social media use.
