Warning These Bad Habits Could Be Thinning Your Hair

before after thinning hair

Thinning hair can be distressing to both men and women, and on a cosmetic level, can lead to a poor self-image. The situation is often worse for men, as thinning hair can often lead to complete hair loss, but even for women, a look in the mirror can be discomforting when more of the scalp is seen because their hair has thinned out on top.

If you have noticed your hair thinning recently, there may be some very good reasons why. In many cases, it is down to age and genetics. As you get older, you might shed more hair than normal, and chances are, if your mother had thinning hair, you might too. However, as we will discuss in a moment, you might also be guilty of bad hair habits that are causing your hair to thin more than it should.

Thankfully, you can do something about the problem. Your eating habits can promote hair growth, there are store-bought products that can help you, and if needed, hair surgeons such as Miguel Canales can offer advanced treatments to manage the problem. So, don’t despair if thinning hair has been affecting you as it’s not too late to save your golden locks.

Still, let’s return to those bad habits we mentioned. Whether age or hereditary factors affect your hair or not, you should still consider your day-to-day life, because as we said, you might be responsible for your hair thinning out. Take note of the following, and then make a few tweaks to your daily routine, so the problem of thinning hair doesn’t get any worse.

These are the bad habits you need to watch out for.

Bad Habit #1: Spending too long under a hot steamy shower

We can all be guilty of this, especially after a tiring day, but you need to take care. Not only will your skin dehydrate when you spend too long under hot water and surrounded by hot steam, but the hot water will wash away your hair’s protective oils too. Your hair will then become dry and brittle, and more prone to breakage and additional shedding.

Tip: This is an easy one: don’t spend too long in the shower! Turn the temperature down a notch too, opting for warm water rather than anything approaching boiling point so as not to damage your scalp. You should also avoid brushing or combing your hair straight after coming out of the shower as wet hair breaks more easily when wet. If possible, let your hair air-dry for around 5 or 10 ten minutes, and then blot it gently with a towel before carefully combing it into shape.

Bad Habit #2: Spending too long in the sun

You already know that the sun’s powerful UV rays can be damaging to your skin, but it’s not so great for your hair, either. With prolonged exposure to the sun, your hair will become dry and brittle, and that could eventually lead to hair loss.

Tip: There are various sun protection products for your hair, so look for something that is suitable for your hair type. Apply them before going out into the sun, and then carry them around with you so you can apply them again if necessary. You might want to wear a sun hat or a headscarf too, as this can also offer you some protection from the sun’s UV rays. And be sensible; walk in shaded areas, and when possible, try to avoid going outside during the hottest parts of the day to reduce the chance of damage to your hair.

Bad Habit #3: Smoking

It’s a no-brainier that smoking is bad for you, but did you know it has dire consequences for your hair too? No? Well, you do now! Smoking reduces the blood circulation to your scalp, and this slows down the growth of your hair follicles. Not only that, but as well as aging the rest of your body, smoking has also been linked to premature graying. So, aside from the fact that smoking can lead to respiratory problems, heart disease, and cancer, do you really need any other incentive to kick this terrible habit?

Tip: Okay, so giving up smoking is easier said than done, we know. If you aren’t able to quit the habit easily, go and see your doctor for professional advice. You might want to try vaping as well, as this is a far safer alternative to smoking, and there is a help guide here that might prove useful to you. For the long-term survivability of both your hair and your life, this is one habit that you do need to deal with.

Bad Habit #4: Letting stress control your life

stress affected hair loss

Now, we know stress can’t easily be avoided, but you shouldn’t let it take over your life. Not only can stress affect you mentally, but it can affect you physically too. This includes telltale aches and pains, but it also has an effect on your hair. The more stressed you are, the higher the level of the stress hormone cortisol you produce, and this can lead to growth disorders and hair loss. You might be more prone to pulling at your hair as a nervous reaction too, and this will weaken your strands and lead to further shedding. As expected, the loss of hair will add to your stress, so this is one vicious cycle you need to escape from.

Tip: While we would advise avoiding stressful situations, we know this isn’t always possible. Still, you can take steps to manage your stress, and this includes eating a healthy diet and taking part in exercise to reduce the consequences stress can have on your life. You should find ways to relax too, so make it a habit to meditate and do things that you enjoy, as this way, there is less chance of stress playing havoc on your life.

Finally

For some people, thinning hair and hair loss is inevitable. However, to protect your flowing locks for as long as possible, follow our suggestions above. And by cutting out the bad habits we mentioned, you will also improve your health in other ways, so you need no further incentive to make a few changes to your everyday life.

Take care, and thanks for reading.

Skin – Health From Within

It doesn’t make much difference if you’ve had a skin routine in place from the moment you could say moisturizer or if you’ve only just come around to the fact that you’re going to need to start looking after your skin. The fact is that staying young looking, disappearing fine lines and wrinkles and generally looking fresh faced starts with a great routine (plus a few little tips of the trade).

In this article we take a look at what it takes to keep skin looking firm and fresh without having to go under the knife.

health from within

Routine Basics

You may have your favorite creams and beauty treatments on your shelves already and many that have been in the family for years, but it’s always worth having a look at new products.

You know the importance of taking off your makeup before bedtime and undoubtedly have a good cleanse, tone and moisturizing routine going on so what else should you throw into the mix for even better skin rejuvenation?

The first thing you might look at is acid peels. These are not anywhere near as terrifying as they sound but are great at helping skin look fresher, firmer and plumper. This is particularly useful if you do have mature skin, which tends to thin as we age.

A good peel shouldn’t be painful or burn the skin but instead exfoliates deeper than a normal scrub and they go a long way in boosting skin cell renewal, all essential for younger-looking, wrinkle free skin.

You can use a peel once a week if you have dry or delicate skin or up to twice a week for other types, though do always check the instructions as this can change from product to product.

Other additions to your skin care routine might also include some vitamin-rich night cream that works to rejuvenate and boost skin cell repair at night, when the rest of your body is also recovering from the strains of the day.

Makeup

How long have you been rocking that same look for? While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having your signature look, there are times when a new makeup routine can transform not only what you look like but also how you feel.

The key to achieving your makeup goals is to establish what it is you want to achieve. If you’re looking for a fresh faced, dewy look then it’s time to ditch the matte foundation and concentrate on finding a product that allows for a little bit of shine. Couple that with a great highlighter stick for your cheekbones and you’ll look fresh and radiant and yes, youthful.

If you’re hoping to soften your look, then you may want to do away with the plucked eyebrow look and let your brows thicken slightly. Use a brow brush and powder to create shape and the desired color. We’re not talking wildly out of control but rather fuller and styled for a less severe look.

Lifestyle

There always has to be a section on lifestyle because there’s no getting away from the fact that what you put into your body is going to have a drastic effect on how your skin reacts and how you feel in general. Treat yourself kindly and give your body everything it needs and you’ll have more energy, healthy hair and skin. On the other hand pump lots of chemicals and processed food into your body and you’ll lose that vigor.

So, just start with the basics. Drink a lot of water, get good quality sleep and plenty of it, move your body and eat lots of colorful, fresh produce.

Why sleep? As mentioned up post this is the time where your body and your mind gets to repair itself and prepare you for the next day. If you consistently skip sleep, then you’ll begin to find doing life gets harder and harder. You’ll lose concentration, feel dizzy and become easily confused and forgetful. As great as parties are, make sure you balance your life with non-alcohol nights too. Your skin, hair and overall health will thank you for it.

Exercise is one of those things that starts with great intentions but can very easily fall by the wayside. One of the biggest reasons for this is because you pick an exercise that feels like punishment and deep down find really quite boring.

You will never sustain a regime that doesn’t interest and challenge you, so make it your goal to introduce movement in your life that feels good. You might hate running but love lifting weights instead, go for it. It all contributes to your energy levels, feeling good about yourself and giving your skin a healthy glow.

Finally a word on food. The biggest favor you can do for your skin is to cut out the processed food. Think a fresh, colorful plate packed full of tasty food that nourishes your body and your skin.

You don’t need to banish cakes from your diet, just consider them as the treats they should be. You might even want to adopt an 80/20 routine where takeaways and alcohol are just saved for a couple of days over the weekend.

Healthy skin doesn’t just come out of a packet but instead comes from a variety of sources. Make your overall health a priority and your skin and hair will shine. You’ll also benefit from having loads of more energy.

Get your skincare routine in place with good quality products, including a chemical peel and high quality moisturizer that rejuvenates your skin at night. Give your look a fresh do-over with a change of cosmetics and a new, softer look that might also include taking your eyebrows to task.

Then make sure that your well being is number one. Give yourself the chance to get plenty of rest, plenty of fresh food and a lot of water.

Great skin comes from taking care of all of you, so make sure you’re feeling great for a look that keeps you looking young and fresh for many years to come.

Amazing Accessorizing To Add Personality To Your Look

Image via Unsplash

What is the one sure-fire way to inject personality, style and individuality into your latest outfit? If you answered accessorizing, you’d definitely be right. There are so many positives to accenting your outfit with a few well chosen pieces – from jaunty silk scarves to brightly coloured bracelets and beautiful bags, accessories offer us a chance to showcase the latest trends without investing in clothes which may lose their appeal when fashion moves on. Accessories can add a luxury designer touch to an affordable outfit, or introduce a pop of colour when you’re wearing neutrals. If your wardrobe is due a style refresh, buying new accessories is an easy way to update without paying out for a huge heap of new clothes. Building up a collection is great fun, and storing your accessories also doesn’t have to take up heaps of room, so it’s a hobby that most of us can indulge in.

Mix Your Metals Up

A really fun way to add a point of difference to your look is to mix up gold, silver and rose gold details. Gone are the days where taste dictated that everything had to match – clashing looks modern and fresh. Warm-toned metals can really pop when you pair with them a blast of silver – think a bold silver cuff contrasted with that vintage gold metal watch. Dig heirloom pieces out of retirement and use a specialist like Ron Gordon Watch Repair to bring them back to full glory. Or try a stack of delicate necklaces in mixed metals to complement a simple silk blouse or plain tee.

Add Impact With A Necklace

Necklaces are a super easy way to punch up a look and really add personality. Whether you like big, bold statement designs or simple pretty pendants, the selection is huge. And necklaces can also give your body confidence a boost too. Different lengths can alter the look of your silhouette. One trick to look instantly slimmer is to add a long necklace which hits just below the bust – this has the effect of streamlining and making you appear taller and leaner.

Default To Shoes

With some outfits, it’s instantly obvious what’s missing, but with others, it can be hard to know what to add. Take winter, when we tend to be wrapped up in thick sweaters like oversized roll necks, which don’t allow necklaces and bracelets to shine. Turn to shoes in these moments to help you make an impact. A pair of ankle boots in a rich maroon or a pop of mustard yellow, or in a special fabric like glittered velvet or mirrored leather shoes can add an amazing punctuation to a darker winter outfit.

Go Delicate

Accessories don’t always have to be shouty to work well. You should also build your collection of simpler, delicate pieces – plain stud earrings, dainty necklaces and simple bracelets can provide a sophisticated accent when an outfit has a statement piece that needs the limelight. Jewelry shouldn’t overpower your outfit, so make sure you have some options which are more low-key for those times where you wear a busier top or a patterned dress.

UnSun

Daily sunscreen protection is the number one prevention method for skin cancers, but DO YOU KNOW WHATS IN YOUR SUNSCREEN?

Summer OOTD: Achieve The Perfect Look For Summer

Summer is just around the corner and we just can’t wait to feel the sun’s rays warming our skin. The summer season is one of the most awaited times of the year and for good reason: It’s sundress and shorts time!

Vintage ootd

In this article, you will learn more about how to achieve the perfect #OOTD this summer. So, sit back, relax and heed the waves’ call! Continue reading below to learn more and don’t forget to take mental notes.

1) Bringing Back Denim

Well, surprise! If you are one of those denim fans out there who just can’t get enough of jeans, fret not because you can still wear denim and stay cool this summer season. Denim skirts and shorts are your best friend this summer. Pair your favourite denim with a low-cut sneakers of choice (preferably white) and a simple, airy sleeveless top for a cutesy but cool look.

2) Accessorize Wisely

It’s summer but it doesn’t mean you can’t wear your beloved jewelry! However, given the warmer temperatures of summer, you need to pick your accessories wisely. The experts at Love & Promise Jewelers recommend to stay away from cheap costume jewelry that can turn green when in contact with sweat. This can ruin a perfect OOTD and make you look tacky. Instead, go for pieces that are high-quality and elegant. Choose a simple necklace that is both easy on the eyes as well as flattering on your neck.

3) Sundresses

Of course, summer will not be complete without sundresses. The thing to love the most about sundresses is that they are very versatile. You can dress them up with pair of stilettos and you’re ready for a summer night-out with the girls. You can also play it more casual and pair them with white sneakers or a pair of flats for a boho chic look.

In choosing a sundress, you should consider your body type for a more flattering fit. Of course, women with hourglass figures can pull off just about any style of dress. However, if you want to emphasize and show off those curves, wraparound summer dresses are the best choice.

If you are a pear-shaped gal, you may want to show off those beautiful hips with A-line sundresses. This creates an illusion of a narrower waist and an irresistible curve. Lastly, if you are an apple-shaped woman with a thick middle, you may want to consider creating the impression of a more elongated torso by drawing attention away from the waist.

4) Go For Pastel Colors

Look and feel cool with pastel colors this summer. Pastel colors have a cooling effect on the eyes. Unlike the darker colors on the color spectrum, lighter colors absorb less heat and are easier on the eyes especially during warmer weather. Pair them with neutral colors like white or beige and see how chic your outfit can look.

5) Go Easy On The Makeup

Next to hydration, sunscreen is the most important thing that your skin needs this summer season. After moisturizing with an oil-free moisturizer, apply a liberal amount of sunscreen before putting on your foundation.

Moreover, go easy on the makeup. Summer isn’t fun when you have heavy makeup melting off your face. Instead of a full coverage foundation, a dewy BB Cream or tinted moisturizer is a better fit for the humid months of the season.
