Hair Trends, from Celebrity Stylist Laurie Heaps, For Fall & Winter 2018

Hair Trends – Biggest Fall & Winter Hair Trends from Celebrity Stylist Laurie Heaps

www.instagram.com/_hairbylaurie/

1.  Hair Color – The High Contrast Root

 actress and singer Sabrina Carpenter.

Celebrity hairstylist Laurie Heaps took actress and singer Sabrina Carpenter even blonder, creating one of the next big hair color trends – The High Contrast Root. “We both loved how her color grew out and wanted to keep more of a high contrast root showing more of her natural dark golden blonde,” explains Laurie. “To achieve the new color, I added buttery blonde highlights with lots of face framing pieces, producing a more golden hue overall.”

2. Hairstyles – Messy Buns

Messy Bun

Chanel was one of the top designers bringing this trend to life for Fall. This style is effortless yet can be super chic at the same. The key to the perfect messy bun involves a great texturizing product and multiple hair ties. After sweeping hair up into a sleek, high ponytail, sprinkle the pony with BioSilk’s Volumizing Therapy Texturizing Powder. “This will not only give volume but add just the right amount of grit for less slip,” explains Laurie. Taking a clear elastic, loop it and form a messy bun like usual. “However, take a second elastic and redo the same process for a messy bun with more structure and character.”

3. Hair Accessories – 90’s Throwback

As history tends to show, trends always seem to come back into fashion. The latest beauty staple making a comeback? 90’s hair accessories. It’s time to check your hair drawers because banana clips and zig zag headbands are back. Designer Prabal Gurgung showcased models like Bella Hadid wearing the trend paired with texturized updos. “You can find inexpensive options on Amazon,” shares Laurie. “Don’t be afraid to experiment by wearing the accessories with different hairstyles (curls, straight, braids, up, etc.).”

4. Haircut – Center Part Fringe

The Haircut - Center Part Fringe

Bangs are getting an update by changing the way they fall and frame the face. Now, the Center Part Fringe is in style. The look can be done on blunt or texturized styles. “Your bangs will start out shorter towards the middle of the forehead and gradually get longer towards the temples,” explains Laurie. Have fun with the style which can be worn straight or by slightly adding in a bump with your flat iron for softer volume that does not bubble up. Keep the look in place with a flexible hold hairspray like White Sands Infinity Finishing Spray. “Your hair won’t look or feel like you used a hairspray, but your bangs will maintain their style, even in the wind!”

5. Hairstyles – Airy Movement

The Hair: Airy Movement

It’s “I woke up like this hair” but better. “Think straight, but not flat. Curls, but not tight,” says Laurie. “Depending on which style you choose, they will all have one thing in common – airy movement.” This windblown effect means straight styles have a slight bend to them and waves are loose and flowing.

To re-create the trend, reach for a multi-purpose flat iron and a great shine enhancing heat protectant.

Taking hair in 1-inch sections, mist with White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Styling Spray before heat is applied. This spray has thermal guards and style memory, while making the hair shinier as heat is applied.

For a slight bend, take the CHI 1″ Volcanic Lava Ceramic Hairstyling Iron and wave the hair by moving your wrist back and forth. This will create soft bends with movement. “This iron actually contains volcanic lava combined CHI ceramic,” explains Laurie. “This combination allows styling at lower than normal temperature producing less damage to the hair while offering smooth, shiny results.”

Plastic Surgery Can Make You Look Older! Expert Plastic Surgeon with Tips and Dish on Celebrity Inspiration

Plastic Surgery Can Make You Look Older!

According to expert Board-Certified Plastic surgeons, the goal of cosmetic surgery is to make a woman like look a refreshed, enhanced version of herself. While many seek cosmetic surgery to turn back the clock; (a respectable, personal choice) there is a downside. The eerie expressionless, puffy, distorted, look that makes people appear even older than they are. To help us understand and achieve a more maintained, elegant look,we tapped the expertise of Board-Certified Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. Manish Shah.

Actress, Michelle Pfeiffer, age 60 photographed in June 2018, makes Dr. Manish Shah's list of Celebrities who look elegantly age appropriate.

Actress, Michelle Pfeiffer, age 60 photographed in June 2018, makes Dr. Manish Shah’s list of Celebrities who look elegantly age appropriate.

Most Common Culprit… Too Much Filler

According to Dr. Shah, the best way to begin is to look at photos of the person decades younger to assess their aging progression and facial symmetry. “You want to look at the facial features to see where there is drooping or volume loss as not to run the risk of over filling the face. When too much filler is used, facial balance is thrown off.”

Dr. Shah explains that today we’re seeing young women in their 20’s trying to look like they’re photo filtered in real life. “They start Botox too young, or overfill their lips, breasts, and derrieres. The odd consequence is that that end up looking older. There are several celebrities who are under 25 and look 30, and 35 due to the work they’ve had done. The lips and cheeks are often the first facial features to be overdone in younger patients.”

Facial Breakdown

Cheeks: Dr. Shah says, that “Over-suctioning cheeks through liposuction can make you look older. Stiffness or “puffy cheeks” can also occur if there is unnecessary fat transfer or filler injections are overdone.”

Brows: A highly arched eye brow, or a brow without any arch can instantly age you. “Getting the eyebrow height perfect to achieve a natural look is one of the most challenging techniques plastic surgeons face with Botox, be sure to find someone who specializes in brow area Botox.”

Chin: “The overall balance of your face can be thrown off if a chin implant is too large,” says Dr. Shah. He adds, “Facial structure goes from more of a heart shape to a square shape. Also, the softness of your face gets lost.”

Neck: Removing too much fat from the neck can result in an excessive deep and sharp angle that gives more of a harsh look.

Midface: Some women get a facelift before it’s needed. Think of many of the stars of Bravo’s Real Housewive’s franchise. “When it’s unnecessary or not done properly, the underlying facial tissues give an unnatural fullness in the cheeks that makes the face look aged, explains Dr. Shah.”

Eyes: Fat removal under the eyes is popular in younger patients. The problem is that removing too much fat can really make a patient look hollower rather than refreshed.

Injectable Toxins: The Frozen Look

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are all effective in reducing lines by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles to stop movement. Problems arise when they are overdone. The face can look very severe and certain facial features can become exaggerated. It is strange to see a woman over 50 with fewer forehead and brow mobility than a pre-teen!

Dr. Shah offers a tip and reminds us that injectable toxins are not permanent, and the result will fade away in time. “It’s best to let the product completely wear off before getting injectable toxins applied to the face again. It’s always best to start off with much less because you can always work your way up to more,” he advises.

Too Large Breast Implants:

Implants that do not fit a woman’s frame and are overexaggerated, are never a good idea at any age. The older a woman gets, the more this is going to scream, “look at me” and be incongruous with the rest of her appearance. Jane Fonda is a perfect example of a woman in her 80’s with implants that match her body in a flattering way.

Ignoring Your Hands and Décolleté:

So many women make the mistake of obsessing over their face, legs, derriere, breasts, and abdomen that they completely forget their hands and décolleté. The latter are a dead giveaway of age, no matter how young the rest of you looks.

Examples of Elegance:

According to Dr. Shah, here’s who he feels has “gotten it right” when it comes to aging gracefully whether they have had plastic surgery or not include, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Katie Couric, Raquel Welch, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kris Jenner, Naomi Campbell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jayne Seymour, Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon Stone, and Padma Lakshmi. Use these celebs for inspiration when contemplating cosmetic enhancements.

BENEFITS OF A MONTH LONG “BOOZE BREAK”

REHAB EXPERT EXPLAINS WHAT SOCIAL DRINKERS CAN EXPECT

If you’re thinking about taking a post summer break from booze -do it. You may get turned onto a whole new mindset about how you choose to consume alcohol. We connected with Rehab Expert, Carrie Carlton, Clinical Director (LCSW) of Beachway Therapy Center in Boynton Beach, Florida; who offered us numerous benefits of taking a “Booze Break.” Studies have shown that a month-long respite from alcohol can significantly benefit one’s mental and physical health. Here’s why…

  1. Do the math! Less booze means more cash.

According to Fortune magazine in 2018, thanks to the “craft cocktail trend” the overall price for alcoholic beverage and therefor the general cost of alcohol has increased. Let’s say you hit a happy hour twice weekly and bought a round of drinks for 3 people at $15-$20 each, with tip that could be between $80 and $100. More if you are in major metropolitan cities. Then multiply that by twice per week for weeks in a month and you’re saving close to $400 per month just on after work happy hours. Add more money saved if you’re also a weekend social drinker. Add way more money if you’re buying bottles in the VIP for hundreds of dollars.

“People are often amazed at how much free cash they have to put towards other things they want to do such as paying down debt, vacations, car repairs, gym memberships, upgrades to their homes, etc., explains Carrie Carlton of Beachway Therapy Center, one of the most comprehensive Rehab programs on the East Coast.

  1. Wow! Your face looks great! What have you done?

While alcohol doesn’t directly cause acne it certainly messes with hormone levels and immune function which then lead to sallow skin, breakouts and puffy, flushed complexion. If you’re they type who can easily “Rose all day” and love mixed drinks featuring more sugar, syrups and other additives; you’ll quickly see a major change to the texture and tone to your skin. “It’s always great to snap selfies in the same room with the same light so you can really see the difference. Also pay attention to compliments. There will be a visible difference, encourages Carlton.”

  1. Are you losing weight? YES!

A study in the journal of Obesity said that people who don’t drink eat less simply because alcohol heightens the senses. It makes the sauce and cheese on that pizza or those late-night bites all the more delicious. When you remove alcohol intake it diminishes your calorie intake. Think about 3 beers or glasses of wine at about 150 each. Those calories add up. “Your blood sugar and cholesterol levels start to really improve, and since alcohol dehydrates the body’s organs, taking a break from booze with help the body function better overall,” explains Carlton.

  1. You’re more energetic, creative focused and are getting a lot more done.

One of the other benefits of opting to go booze-free for a month is that you’ll notice you’re not sluggish. You’re no longer fading in the afternoon or hitting the snooze 3 times in the morning. You are clear and focused on what you want to accomplish in the day and you have the ability to follow through with a better mood. You’ll be able to concentrate on tasks which also helps you stimulate the part of your brain where memory takes place. This keeps us sharp as we age.

  1. More you time and new friends!

Often when we make a major change to our lives like choosing to lay off alcohol for a month our crew of cohorts changes. This frees up time for you to focus on you. Self care is important and often neglected when going out to socialize over drinks is the norm. When you’re no longer invited out to drink away the work day, you’re now free to get an after work fitness class in, take a workshop, listen to some audio books and check out a cool lecture. You start to realize there is plenty to do that doesn’t involve liquor and you start to meet new friends to do these things with.

“What’s interesting to note is that people who consider themselves “social drinkers” experience these improvements within a few days. People who struggle with alcoholism may actually cause more harm to themselves if they just decide to stop drinking cold turkey. Because there are many social drinkers teetering on the line of having a “drinking problem” given they tend to binge on the weekends with casual drinks with dinner mid-week; committing to going without alcohol may reveal there actually is a bigger issue going on. If someone can’t last a week without alcohol and feels nausea, gets terrible headaches, sweats, and are physically shaky and ill, consulting a doctor would be an important next step,” cautions Carrie Carlton.

  1. What It Does For Your Liver

As much as people might want to believe that taking a vacation from drinking makes up for the excess, Carrie Carlton says it’s simply not true. Excessive boozing and “drying out” for a month won’t even out the score with your liver. A month-long hiatus won’t heal your liver — which processes the sugar in alcohol and can be damaged by excessive drinking. Are you really “healing your liver”? No, though you are taking a month off from causing it any more damage.

Nail Care 101 by Celebrity Manicurist Skyy Hadley

Taking good care of your hands and nails is vital and celebrity manicurist and owner of As U Wish Nail Spa, Skyy Hadley is giving you the ultimate guide to nail care. Learn how to care for your nails with her tips and tricks as well as proper care essentials for keeping your nails healthy and beautiful.

1.      Cuticle Oil: Always use cuticle oil as it doesn’t just keep your feet soft and moisturized, it also keeps your nail polish from chipping.
Sally Hansen products to use to keep hands/cuticle moisturized:
Sally Hansen Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil
Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail & Cuticle Oil
2.      Let Your Cuticles Be: Trimming or cutting cuticles during a manicure is purely cosmetic and sometimes doesn’t benefit the nail in any way. The cuticle is the barrier to protect the surrounding skin and help develop the nail from infections. (Bacteria)
3.       The Proper Way to Cut Your Nails: The best way to cut your nails is to make sure you clean under the nail otherwise bacteria could form. Use fingernail clippers for your fingers, and use toenail clippers for your toes. If you are unsure of what shape your nails should have, just look at your cuticles. The U-shape of the cuticle should be reflected (upside down) by the top of your nail. The primary goal is to mirror the shape.
4.      All About The Base: Don’t forget your base coat, it helps to give the color something to sink into besides your actual nails.
5.      Don’t Forget Your Top Coat: This is a majorly important step if you want your nails to maintain high shine and luster. You can always keep reapplying topcoat every 2-3 days to continuously add strength and shine.
