October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is an annual international health campaign organized by the partnership of professional medical associations, government agencies, and public service organizations such as major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. It also has been instrumental in providing greater access to screening services.

Founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries, (now part of AstraZeneca, the maker of several anti-breast cancer drugs), National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues, and promoting mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. While there have been many great strides made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished.

Breast cancer affects everyone….men, women, children, any age, race, religion, economic bracket. As a child in elementary school, cancer was never a word that was even said out loud. I remember the first time I had even heard the words breast cancer. I was 9. A mother of a classmate of mine, who had been diagnosed with the disease, had taken her own life. It took the courage of Former First Lady Betty Ford, a breast cancer survivor herself, to publicaly speak out about the disease in a televised emotional appeal to call attention to the importance of screening and awareness. She pioneered the cause and soon after, other public figures, industry executives, government and community leaders, members of the media, philanthropic organizations, and many individual women further galvanized national public interest.

As we celebrate more than 25 years of awareness, let us take the time to thank those who have championed the cause. Let us thank businesses that give back to the cause and support them in their endeavors. Let us also remain dedicated to educate and empower women to take charge of their own breast health. Practice regular self-breast exams, schedule regular visits, and mammographies. For more information on Breast Cancer Awareness Month see http://www.nbcam.org.

Star Emmy Hair – Get the Look

I had the pleasure of attending Wella Professionals Red Carpet Viewing Party earlier tonight. Also attending were the expert Wella Professionals to help dissect the looks seen that night. Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte who’s A-list celebrities include Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, Nicole Ritchie Katie Holmes, Madonna, Rachel Mc Adams, and Selena Gomez, is one of the most sought after editorial and celebrity hairstylists in the industry today. Color Ambassador Aura Friedman is in the forefront of the the top fashion magazines and on the runway for NY Fashion Week. Her growing clientele includes Carolyn Murphy, Jennifer Lawrence, Sopie Dahl, M.I.A., and Lady Gaga. Rounding out Wella’s North American Ambassadors is renowned hair stylist Ric Pipino, who’s fashion work includes layots in Vogue, Elle, CQ as well as campaigns for Donna Karan and Victoria’s Secret. He is a regular contributor on Oprah and Access Hollywood.

What makes the Emmy Award Show significant is that many of the trends seen tonight will filter into holiday fashions, The color of the evening was certainly red, with wines and purples coming into lay. As for hair and make-up…the rule is glamorous, and retro-glam elegant. Side-swept hair, deep side parts, finger curls, a mixture of textures created by using both a curling iron and flat iron. With so many possibilities, how difficult would it be to achieve the looks seen at the red carpet.

Here are some of the Wella Professionals Styles The Stars at the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and how to create them!

EMILY BLUNT
Styled by Laini Reeves using Wella Professionals
Emily Blunt is a British actress best known for her roles in The Young Victoria and The Devil Wears Prada.
QUOTE: “We wanted to balance the complexity of the dress with a simple, modern hairdo.”
To create this very simple and very flattering up do
1. Wash hair using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner to maximize volume and shine
2. Power dry hair in different directions for a nice lift at the root
3. Using a 2inch barrel curling iron, create spiral curls all over and work through fingers
4. At the base of the neck, create a ponytail tease the ponytail and split it in two then twist and wrap the hair like a ballerina bun at the nape of the neck with a nice messy texture
5. Finish with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray

HEATHER MORRIS
Styled by Paul Norton using Wella Professionals
Heather Morris is an American actress, dancer, and singer best known for her role as the cheerleader Brittany S. Pierce in the musical comedy series Glee.
QUOTE: “Emmys are the biggest night in television! When styling hair, you must take into account the girls personality and her dress, but it’s important to show your own creative edge,” said Paul Norton, “She’s not necessarily super ‘Hollywood’ and it was so great working with her because she let me do whatever I wanted with her hair!”
INSPIRATION: My idea was based off of a French-twist style. Once I got involved, it turned into a lot more of a polished look. It’s a mix between rough and polished.
Here’s how to get Heather’s ultra-modern up-do:
1. Start by applying Wella Professionals Curl Craft Wax Mousse to give hair tons of texture and a lot of body
2. Blow out hair after applying Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier Hair Primer with a round brush and then curl the hair away from the face with a 1 ½ barrel curling iron
3. Pin a Mohawk section from the hair up and out of the way, then divide the remainder of the hair into three sections
4. From left to right, use a boar bristle brush to smooth hair upwards as if putting into a pony tail, start twisting hair sections inward and secure with bobby pins, repeat on right hand side and secure in same spot, the center section will be left creating what looks like a small pony tail
5. Once bottom part is secured, use 3 inch section around the face, spritz with Wella Professionals Create Character Texturizing Spray and back-comb hair for extra volume and pin down as a slight pompadour
6. Roll the remaining  back section under, and secure with bobby pins
7. Keep the look playful by pulling some pieces out so the look has a bit of edge, so as not to look overdone
8. Secure look with an all-over spray of Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray

GRETCHEN MOL
Styled by Nathaniel Hawkins using Wella Professionals
Gretchen Mol is an American actress known for her role as Gillian Darmody in HBO‘s Boardwalk Empire.
QUOTE: “I wanted her hair to look loose, modern, and a little messed up – but still beautiful and elegant with an overall feeling of ultimate glamour.”
INFLUENCE: The beautiful, simple L’Wren Scott dress made her look all about the hair and makeup!
Here’s how to recreate Gretchen’s glamorous ‘do:
6. Evenly coat damp hair with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier
7. Apply Wella Professionals Extra Volume Styling Mousse directly to a vent brush and comb from the root to the end for thorough application
8. Blow dry roots of the hair up and away from face with medium heat – high heat can cause hair to soften too much for a sturdy updo –and then scrunch hair dry at mid-shaft until hair is 100% dry
9. Spray hair evenly with light application of Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray and then curl sections of hair starting from front top hairline with a  1 ¼ inch barrel curling iron
10. Brush sections out and immediately, while hair is still warm, pin in purple Velcro curlers, repeat for entire head
11. Allow hair to cool for 20 minutes, which is important for the hair to set, then remove curlers and brush out roots to get rid of set marks
12. Spray hair with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray to create matte texture to create the loose – slightly undone look
13. Aerate hair with fingers then set with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray to control fly-aways

NINA DOBREV
Styled by Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One Salon using Wella Professionals
Gretchen Mol is an American actress known for her role as Gillian Darmody in HBO‘s Boardwalk Empire.
QUOTE: “Nina’s red Donna Karen dress basically chose this effortless look itself. The dress was so beautifully powerful therefore we wanted something not too done, loose, soft and romantic.”
Here’s how to create Nina’s effortless look:
1. Blow out hair with Wella Professionals Flowing Form Smoothing Balm to create lots of body and lift, and then set hair in Velcro rollers
2. Take a 1 ¼ inch curling iron and curled and pin hair in horizontal  sections
3. Let hair set for about 20 minutes and then brush hair off to one side with a boar bristle brush
4. Lift bang area with a rattail comb and spray with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray
5. Spritz the hair with Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray for an all over radiant glow

JULIANNE HOUGH
Styled by Campbell McAuley using Wella Professionals

QUOTE: “For Julianne’s hair, I wanted a look that was chic and classic, but also natural, to complement her beautiful 1950’s-inspired form-fitting dress.”
To recreate the easy and elegant parted & pulled-back bun:
1. Prep wet hair with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier Style Primer, then blow-dry the hair with a large round brush
2. Use Wella Shimmer Delight Shine Spray to add extra natural shine to the hair
3. Create a center part in the hair and lightly brush her hair down, then back into a low, natural ponytail

Say Goodbye to Dark Spots!

Skin 2 Skin™ Care
Controls Dark Spots with Vegan Peptide Technology!

Dark Spots, photodamage or sun damaged skin is something that most people will not escape. It occurs with exposure to sunlight starting at an early age with 25% of our exposure occurring before the end of our teens. Even if you limit your exposure as an adult and use SPF there is a real possibility you will develop dark spots.

The damage is not only limited to dark spots but uneven pigmentation, darkening of the skin, small spider blood vessels, Rosacea, sensitive skin, rough and scaly patches, freckles, thinning and fragile skin, pre skin cancer and skin cancer. The most advanced vegan peptide technology is in Skin 2 Skin™ Care’s Photoaging Repair Cream that can help solve darkening of the skin without sun sensitivity that is related to lighteners, glycolic acid and Retinol. Ever read the back of a product label that has glycolic acid, lighters or Retina l in the ingredient list. It is stated “Do not expose skin to sun” or “Stay out of the sun when using this product”. That’s nice but we don’t live in a cocoon.

Ken Simpson, (pictured below) founder of Skin 2 Skin™, knew that there had to be a better way to help control the appearance of photo- damage without hiding from the sun. He knew first hand since he lives in Palm Springs, Ca where sun is plentiful and there is no hiding from it. Before creating Skin 2 Skin™ out of necessity because of a brain tumor and radiation treatments that were destroying his skin, he had tried all the other products including lighteners, glycolic acid and Retinol. He had become severely sun sensitive with fragile skin because of the products. “l love the color red but it is not a flattering color for my skin,” says Ken.

Ken’s answer was to create a skin care product using two of the most advanced vegan peptides that would help reverse and prevent sun damage and dark spots. The formulation had to be perfect for the peptides to be delivered and work properly, and at the recommended dosage. Ken went to work and created Skin 2 Skin Care Photo aging Repair Cream, a result driven pure and organic multi functional skin care product.

Skin 2 Skin Care Photo Aging Repair Cream is formulated with the ingredient Kinetin N6. Kinetin exists naturally in our cells and is known as a “sensitive skin alternative to retinols” and a potent antioxidant. It promotes the natural cell division increasing natural exfoliation of dead skin cells. It works by improving the skin’s health by retarding and delaying natural cell aging and preventing future premature cell sun damage and death while restoring and recovering savable sun damaged cells. It is one of the most effective skin aging preventative measures in your anti-aging arsenal. It works in the deep cellular levels for the reduction of wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots plus improves the skin’s texture.

It’s also formulated with the newest advanced vegan peptide that lightens the overall appearance of the skin without damaging the skin, Melanostatine®5 . It inhibits the synthesis of melanin, dark or black pigment controlling dark spots and the darkening of aging skin. This helps to prevent hyper-production, dark spots and has the lightening ability for all skin tones Caucasian, Asian, Brown and African-American without long term damage, thinning if the skin, and the need to avoid the skin.

Visible signs of dark spots and overall skin darkening can be seen to diminish within 4 weeks with twice a day application of the Photoaging Repair Cream. It increases your skins hydration and improves the health of your skin’s barrier that naturally protects the skin from UV, Bacteria, Fungus, and chronic inflammation causing premature aging of the skin.

This is why the Photoaging Repair Cream is one of Anna Torv, of the TV show Fringe favorite products “I lather it on my neck and chest which seems to have taken most of the beatings the Australian sun has to offer.”
