Won’t I Look Bulky? Weight-Lifting Myths for Women Busted

Women who wonder if weightlifting could make them look like body builders can rest easy. They will not. Bestselling author, Tik Tok and Instagram influencer Beth Linder-Moss describes the numerous benefits and some of the misconceptions about weightlifting and strength training as part of an overall fitness regimen on her syndicated podcast. The Beth Linder-Moss Podcast can be heard on SoundcloudApplePodcastsBoomplayLibSynSoundcloudDeezerPlayerFMivooxBullhorn, SpotifyiHeart, and her website at https://bethlinder-moss.com.

Will It Make Me Look Like a Body Builder?

Beth discusses how strength and weight training contribute to weight loss, fitness, and a healthy lifestyle. She addresses some myths about weight training and has practical advice in place of bad information. For example, does muscle weigh more than fat? “A pound is a pound whether it is fat or muscle,” Beth told her listeners. A few other examples of how weight training benefits those who participate are:

  1. Will weight training for women make them bulky like body builders? According to Beth, “when we do strength training, what we’re doing is increasing the functional ability of our muscles. And that doesn’t necessarily increase the size of those muscles.” To build larger muscles, “lift really, really heavy weights until you can’t go much further,” she said. “This is known as “going to failure.”
  2. What should we eat to develop more muscle? Beth suggests more protein to help fuel muscle development. “Sources of protein include eggs, nuts, lean meat, fish and chicken.”
  3. Does strength training contribute to an overall weight loss program? According to Beth, “you definitely need to incorporate weight training into your weekly routine because there’s so many benefits to strength training.” Some of these benefits include reduced body fat. “The more muscle you have, you actually burn calories more efficiently throughout the whole day,” Beth allowed.

DOVE SETS A NEW STANDARD IN SKIN CLEANSING WITH EXCITING NEW UPGRADE

Dove announces the latest advance in superior moisturization with the launch of NEW Dove Body Wash featuring 24-hour Renewing MicroMoisture. The new formula is powered by proprietary nano technology to actively regenerate the skin’s moisture, and has a new look to match, with a modern, user-friendly design that reflects the first upgrade to Dove’s iconic bottle pack in 17 years.

Setting a new industry standard, Dove Body Wash is the first body wash in the U.S. market to harness nano technology. Dove’s new formula continuously nourishes skin and improves its moisture barrier for a full 24 hours as well as uses proprietary technology with millions of moisturizing microdroplets to help boost and retain moisture. These tiny droplets deposit onto the skin, fitting into the gaps and crevices of dry skin for a silky-smooth finish, while stearic and palmitic fatty acids penetrate deeply within the stratum corneum and work with the skin’s natural renewal processes to visibly reduce dryness by 50% after every shower.

To accompany the new formula, Dove worked with leading cutting-edge designers and technicians to create the first upgrade to the iconic pack in 17 years – a beautiful bottle to match the skin it cares for. Long-time Dove users will recognize the colored cap, representing their tried-and-true favorites, while the discreetly curved oval-shaped lid is a nod to where it all began for Dove – the Dove Beauty Bar. The Body Wash’s shower-friendly design not only means it is easy to use, but you can hold it, flip the cap, and dispense the body wash with just one hand. The bottle has even been crafted to allow it to be inverted on your bathroom shelves when it gets low and the cap can be completely removed, so it’s moisturizing to the last drop.

“Dove is used by 174 million people around the world every day, and is in more than 60% of US households. We’re chosen and preferred by so many because we are constantly raising the bar and offering a superior level of care,” said Marcela Melero, Vice President, Global Dove Skin Cleansing. “We’re focused on understanding evolving skincare preferences and continuing to meet new needs through innovation. Change is beautiful, and we’re thrilled to be making one of the biggest evolutions of Dove Body Wash in nearly two decades.”

Since 1957, Dove has led the way in gentle cleansing and moisturization, constantly evolving its formulas to deliver long-lasting hydration and protect the skin barrier. Through the launch of the revolutionary and much-loved Dove Beauty Bar, this household icon established the blueprint of gentle skin care with a patented blend of mild cleansers and ¼ moisturizing cream that leaves skin feeling clean, soft, smooth, and moisturized. 65 years later, Dove is still leading the charge in moisturizing innovation as the #1 dermatologist recommended body wash brand.

In addition to these changes, newly reformulated Dove Body Wash is Dove’s first PETA Approved Vegan body wash. With a 98% biodegradable formula*, Dove Body Wash uses 100% plant-based moisturizers. Every bottle of Dove Body Wash has been made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic helping to reduce the use of virgin plastic by more than 20,500 tons per year1.

As the #1 selling body wash in the U.S., Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash anchors the newly reformulated range, alongside other favorites such as Sensitive Skin, Refreshing Cucumber and Green Tea, Glowing Mango & Almond Butters and many more. NEW for 2023, Dove Revitalizante Body Wash with Cherry & Chia Milk offers a luxuriously pampering moment that not only boosts skin but ignites the senses. It is the first Dove Body Wash with English & Spanish text on the bottle to launch in the US. Featuring a light and bubbly sensorial experience, Revitalizante has a vibrant formula with cherry-pink hues, and is also available in Beauty Bar and Exfoliating Body Polish formats. Also NEW for this year are the Invigorating Body Wash with Aloe & Eucalyptus Oil and Calming Body Wash with Oatmeal & Rice Milk.

New Dove Body Wash is now available at mass food and drug retailers nationwide. To learn more, please visit www.Dove.com/.

*98% of ingredients break down into carbon dioxide, water & minerals (OECD test methods 301, 302 and/or 310), except for the Snow Blossom variant

How To Change Part Direction

The side part was never really dead, but it’s back in a big way.  Side saddle and butterfly fringes are great compliments to short hybrid cuts, mid-length lobs and longer layers.  It’s one the easiest ways to be on trend this season without having to do that much.  But how easy is it to change a part?  Top stylist Sam Villa, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Sam Villa and Global Artistic Ambassador for Redken, explains how to train hair to switch directions.

“The middle part has been popular for so long that hair will tend to want to live there now, so you have to work to change your root direction, basically alter hair at the base, in order for it to fall to the side now,” explains Villa.

How To Change Part Direction

  • Apply a mousse or lotion to wet hair at the base (roots).
  • Use the hook of a comb to neatly carve out a side part.
  • Use the fine teeth of the comb to smooth and reset the growth pattern by combing hair to the side while trailing with the nozzle of a blow dryer focusing heat and air at the root in the direction hair should fall.  For natural textures, apply product on wet hair, comb into place and let air dry or diffuse to dry.

A comb works better than a brush because it can reach further down the hair shaft and grab hair closer to the root.  The fine teeth also provide more tension for redirecting.

How long will it take to retrain hair for a solid side part?  It all depends on how often hair is shampooed.  Hair should stay in place if it does not get wet…and sooner or later it will fall into the new pattern automatically.

Suggested Tools and Products

  • Sam Villa Professional Light Ionic Blow Dryer – comes with a rotating nozzle.

Karina Brez Debuts The Jeweled Barn, an Elegant Mobile Retail Pop-Up, at the Winter Equestrian Festival

The Jeweled Barn, by Karina Brez, is an eco-friendly shop inspired by the tiny house aesthetic.

New York, NY. January 11, 2023.  Karina Brez Jewelry celebrates the bond horses and humans have. Influenced by the majesty of the horse, equestrian gear, symbolism, and myth, her designs honor both the sport and the connection created. They feature a harmonious balance of love for all things equestrian, while making fine jewelry accessories accessible. In her next branding expansion, Brez takes her equine style and brings it to the world of interior design through The Jeweled Barn, her tiny house retail pop-up concept. The newly debuting Jeweled Barn is located just outside of the VIP area of the Winter Equestrian Festival, which runs from now through April 2, 2023.

Returning to the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) at the prestigious Wellington International for the 11th year, the show is the longest-running equestrian event in the world. Attracting the top athletes in the sport, WEF is the premier backdrop for trendsetting equine style. The Jeweled Barn is a tiny house, inspired by the distinguished show, as a celebration of the equestrian lifestyle. Designed to appear as a barn on the exterior, it is an homage to the home of the horse. Its interior is meticulously detailed, for the viewing and purchasing of pieces from Karina Brez signature collections.

Jewelry Designer Karina Brez states, “The Jeweled Barn is inspired by the spirit of the equestrian lifestyle, both rustic and refined. An interpretation of an English tack room, it is sophisticated, incorporating green, gold and reclaimed wood. It is making its debut at WEF, and will be used to showcase Karina Brez Jewelry at horse shows across the U.S.”

The Jeweled Barn was developed to be carbon neutral: consciously designed with environmental impact in mind, featuring eco friendly products, several local vendors, and surrounded by many plants. The structure was built by Melbourne, FL-based, Movable Roots. “As a complete custom design and build company, Movable Roots was excited to be part of Karina’s journey, helping her create a unique mobile ‘tiny home’ space that worked for her and her brand,” says Michael Cheatham, Co-Owner, Movable Roots. Its lights are from Barn Light Electric, in Titusville, Florida and the large windows were acquired by PGT, a local window company. In celebration of the equestrian aesthetic, Ralph Lauren tartan wool fabric is repurposed as wallpaper. The shelves are made from old tobacco barns, and there are reclaimed hardwood floors at the base of the structure. The entire barn is powered by solar panels on its roof, designed and installed by Expert Mobile Solar, from Brevard County, FL. The solar panels are assisted by a battery to allow the barn to be off the grid, including its satellite internet and air conditioning. Handmade leather trunks have been commissioned from Nick Coggon in Nottingham, England to decorate the building. The interior is furnished with shiplap walls, painted green, and it is decorated with equestrian antiques. Ebony-stained cedar wood and copper lights surround, and flowers adorn the exterior of The Jeweled Barn. Its innovative design offers a modern way to attend horse shows in a pop-up retail space, allowing for the aesthetic of the Karina Brez equestrian fine jewelry brand to show through on-the-go.

The Jeweled Barn is located outside of the VIP area of the Winter Equestrian Festival (between the international Club and Hermes), in Wellington, FL.  Karina Brez Jewelry is a corporate sponsor, and is sponsoring the Adult Amateur Hunters Division, ages 36-49, at WEF. Karina Brez signature collections are available online at https://karinabrez.com/, and will be shown in person at The Jeweled Barn, from January 4 through April 2, 2023. Lindsey Olson Demonstrates the Difference Between a Single and Double-Waver

There are dozens of ways to create texture, volume and movement, and wavers are probably the easiest and fastest way to go about it.  Lindsey Olson, Sam Villa Ambassador @lindsey.marie.olson, demonstrates the difference between a single and a double waver as she creates glam waves two ways.

Regardless of which waver is used, Olson recommends the following:

  • Dry mousse with Redken Root Lifter 10 to build volume (apply mousse, comb through and blow dry)
  • Spray each section with Redken Thermal Spray 22, comb through.  Hair has to be smooth before compressing to get highly polished results.
  • The denser the hair, the smaller the section.
  • Count to 3 for each compression for consistency.
  • Use dry sectioning clips to section – they won’t leave a mark
  • Cool hair thoroughly before breaking up and styling, this will make the waves last longer
  • To finish, use fingers for a looser Boho finish, a wide-tooth comb to push waves together and a Sam Villa Artist Series Polishing Paddle Brush for an ultra-smooth glam finish.
  • Finish with Redken Shine Flash for added gloss

Olson used Sam Villa Pro Results Double-Waver and Single-Waver irons for the demonstration, along with diagonal back sections to create a soft flow away from the face.

The Results

Double-Waver: 2 subtle rounded barrels

Result: Waves are soft and round, good for boho updos or soft braids, perfect for creating romantic soft texture and on natural curls to accentuate and define texture.

Single Waver: 1 deep narrow barrel

Result: A poppy wave with more intense ripples, the ultimate accordion glam wave with a lux feel.  Makes more of an impact than the double waver and the perfect glam waves in far less time than a traditional set.

“If you do a lot of brides and updos, wavers will save you so much time.  They’re insanely faster than using a regular curling or flat iron, especially for making glam lux waves,” says Olson.  “And yes, they are different, so don’t choose one over the other, trust me, you need both!”

See Olson create effortless lived-in waves with a double waver and Marcel iron in just 10 minutes here.
