Acne Vulgaris

Acne Vulgaris commonly known as Acne is a disease of the skin that is marked by whiteheads, blackheads, rashes, inflammation, red skin, rashes and in few cases deep lesions.

Acne can be grouped according to its seriousness. They are,

  • Mild Acne – Few inflammatory lesions, non-inflammatory lesions or sometimes both.
  • Moderate Acne – Inflammatory lesions are more, occasional nodules like painful or hard lesions, sometimes both and lenient scarring.
  • Severe Acne – Severe inflammatory lesions, scarring, and nodules, no improvement of moderate acne even after it is being treated for 6 months or acnes that cause serious distress psychologically.

The part that affects acne is the Sebaceous Glands. They are the oil gland, tiny in size and are affected by the hormones. These occur on your chest, face, neck, back, and upper arms.

Acne must not be taken lightly as severe acne can cause scarring permanently on the skin, disfiguring or extreme emotional anguish that may give way to depression and also separation from social circumstances.

It is very common in the teenage years, but some may experience acne in the later years also. In a few cases, it is a problem for a lifetime.

Causes of Acne

  • The strands that lead to acne are Multifactorial and Complex. Hormonal fluctuations, a genetic predisposition that gives way to excess oil or sebum production carried out by the sebaceous glands, follicular hyperkeratinization, inflammation and colonization of bacteria can cause acne.
  • The main cause of acne is Follicular hyperkeratinization. It is the skin cells shedding abnormally in the upper part of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands, especially near the open pores. The pores are clogged by these skin cells and lead to Microcomedone.
  • The bacterium that grows normally on your skin is called Propionibacterium acnes. The person suffering from acne has damaged skin, inflammation, sebum alteration and follicular hyperkeratinization.
  • The main causes of acne development are Hormones. It affects mostly in the adolescence age because of the level of sex hormones increases during the puberty age of both boys and girls.
  • Women may suffer acne even during their later years in life because of premenopausal, pregnancy or when using birth control pills.
  • The diet and inflammation are known to be one of the causes of acne, but it is very less likely to be believed. It sure has strong evidence and can affect largely in the treatment of acne. Acne can also be produced by a few medications and occupational exposure to chemicals. But they are different when compared to Acne Vulgaris.
