Quick Getaways

As exciting as going to movie premiers, attending celebrity gifting suites and posing for the paparazzi can be, every now and then, it’s nice to get away from all of the craziness of Hollywood.

But very few Angelenos and even fewer LA visitors would ever guess that there are many tranquil spots to enjoy right in this area.  Greystone Mansion, a Gothic-English estate in the heart of Beverly Hills, is one of my favorite places to escape and relax.

Surrounded by 18.5 acres of parkland, the historical landmark was built in 1928 by a wealthy oil baron but is now used for cultural and educational activities, photo and commercial shoots, weddings, and public events.   It has also been featured in many well-known movies including Indecent Proposal, Spiderman and The Bodyguard, to name a few.

The beautiful fountains and lush gardens remind me a lot of some I’ve seen in Europe….which I love!  And spending a half hour or so walking around the estate (which is free!) is a quick way to get away from it all without taking a trip oversees.

Recently, I was introduced to Garden Alchemy, the newest collection from Thymes and have find that it’s another, even easier way to “get away”.  Thymes paints images of an “ethereal enchanted garden” and promises that the collection’s three original fragrances, Rosemary Sage, Wild Angelica, Lemon Geranium, will “whisk you away to a dreamy, blossoming locale”…and they deliver.

Each unique scent is available in the following forms:  bubbling bath elixir, bath salt envelope, shower gel, body soufflé, mist for body and bed, mini cologne and poured candle.

I especially love the Rosemary Sage Mist for Body and Bed!  Combined with soothing willow bark and calendula extract to heal and moisturize, the relaxing scent is wonderful to use after a shower or bath and using it on my sheets guarantees me a good night’s sleep.

And the packaging is absolutely gorgeous! They look really pretty sitting on your vanity.  If you’re looking for a really nice gift that’s also reasonably priced, you’ll want to check these out.  But be sure to buy extras, you’ll definitely want to keep some for yourself.

We Like It Hot…Zaggora Hot!

One of the best things about living in Hollwood for me has been the chance to make some really fantastic female friends over the years.  And yes, I may be biased, but they really are all fabulously talented, intelligent and beautiful, both inside and out!  They are also great sources of information on the latest beauty tips and newest fashion and makeup trends.

One such lovely lady is my friend Candace Kita, a fellow actress and model who is also an author, women’s safety advocate and host of a weekly radio show on LA Talk Radio.

Candace Kita

With all of her activities it’s a wonder that she also consistently finds time to fit in regular gym workouts, but she does and always looks great!  When I came across Zaggora Hot Pants, I knew she would love them.  Here’s what she had to say:

When I recently was introduced to Zaggora Hot Pants, I wasn’t sure what they were intended for. They looked a lot like my surfing wetsuit. Made of neoprene, polyester and nylon, they do indeed feel a lot like something I would use when jumping into the ocean. Zaggora’s claim: their Hot Pants will help you with weight loss by increasing energy expenditure during exercise. Hot Pants increase energy expenditure in the hour after exercise by 26% . In layman’s terms, if you exercise for 30 minutes, weight loss is around four times greater in Hot Pants than in a standard garment.

Zaggora Hot Pants

That sounded like a pretty tall order to fill, so I decided to try them out at my local Zumba class. (http://www.zumba.com/) Just for the record, I have a naturally slender build, but my problem area is my stomach.  The Hot Pants fit snugly and I was happy to find they went above my stomach. Mine were a cute powder blue, orange and yellow so I felt quite stylish in them. As I worked out, boy did I sweat. And sweat. And sweat. They were literally bathed in sweat when I finished. If your target area is your waist, stomach, thighs and butt, I think this may be for you. I am also going to try them hiking. Long story short, Zaggora’s Hot Pants are not cheap, but if you are looking to maximize your fat-burning potential during exercise, give these a try.

Are You Getting Your Beauty Sleep?

We’ve all heard how important sleep is to our health.  According to the Harvard Women’s Health Watch, there are six reasons to get enough sleep:

  1. Learning and memory: Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. In studies, people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later.
  2. Metabolism and weight: Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering levels of hormones that affect our appetite.
  3. Safety: Sleep debt contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. These lapses may cause falls and mistakes such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.
  4. Mood: Sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. Too little sleep can also leave you too tired to do the things you like to do.
  5. Cardiovascular health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.
  6. Disease: Sleep deprivation alters immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells. Keeping up with sleep may also help fight cancer.

But what about the importance of sleep to our looks?  You know what I’m talking about.  How many mornings (of afternoons) have you awakened after a long night of partying, or cramming for exams, or insomnia and looked like ________ ……well, not as great as you might like?

The fact is, while telling someone you need your “beauty sleep” might be a pretty good way to get out of doing something, it’s more than a cute expression:  it’s a fact.   According to a study published in BMJ, a British medical journal, getting too little sleep definitely has an impact on your physical appearance!  Researchers wrote that “sleep-deprived people appeared less healthy, less attractive and more tired compared with when they are well rested.  This suggests that humans are sensitive to sleep-related facial cues.”

Here are a few of my personal tips for getting great beauty sleep:

Invest in a Humidifier

Your skin needs moisture to look great and this can be a challenge especially if you live in a drier climate.  A good humidifier is the answer.

I travel a lot for work and was finding that I never looked worse than after spending the night in a hotel room.  I’d wake up, look in the mirror and discover that my eyes were beet red and my skin was puffy and just tired looking.  But, since I started requesting a humidifier from housekeeping, those problems have disappeared.  Use a humidifier at night while you sleep. It will provide moisture to keep your skin soft, supple and younger looking!

Use a Good Pillowcase

Silk is the only way to go!  Silk contains natural proteins and amino acids that have wonderful anti-aging benefits.  And movie stars have sworn by this beauty secret or years! I was recently introduced to Sleep ‘N Beauty 100% mulberry silk pillowcases and will probably never be able to sleep on a cotton pillowcase again.

Sleep N' Beauty 100% mulberry silk pillowcases

Luxurious and oh so soft, Sleep N’ Beauty silk pillowcases are naturally hypoallergenic, keep you from waking up with creases on your face, help your skin to retain moisture, and are great for protecting your hair from bed head and split ends.  And as an added bonus, they’re even machine washable!

Forget Sleeping Pills, Use Lavender

I absolutely LOVE the scent of lavender!  But, not only does it smell great, it’s fantastic for getting a good night of beauty sleep.  I like to tuck a small sachet of it inside my pillowcase or sometimes add a few drops of lavendar oil to my humidifier.  I’ve also read that you can use lavender oil on your skin to help relax your muscles (and again, inhale througout the night), add it to your bathwater before bed or even use lavendar flowers in brewed tea.

I hope you’ll give some of these tips a try and have a great night!

Memorial Day (and Everyday) Beauty at Sephora

Going through the newspaper this morning…..yes, there are still a few people who do that….you’re likely to find lots of Memorial Day sales designed to lure you to your  nearest shopping mall.  The truth is, I’m not usually big on heading out to the mall for great fashion  finds.  I tend to seek out small stand-alone shops and boutiques for those unique items that no one else has.  But for great beauty products….I’m there!  Whether I’ve just run out of my favorite mascara or am in search of a new eye shade,  for me there’s no place better than Sephora! There’s virtually nothing beauty-related that you can’t find there!  So, while you’re at the mall this weekend (I know you’re going!), check out two of my newest finds available at the makeup megastore:

Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel

I love the way my skin feels after using a mask.  If you want to see immediate results, this is for you!  Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel uses glycolic acid and Vitamin C to exfoliate and  leave your skin smoother, more hydrated and brighter looking after just one use.  Not thick and “goopy”like a lot of  traditional masks, all you have to do is massage it evenly over your face and neck, leave it on for 10 minutes (there’s just a bit of tingling), rinse and pat dry and voila!  It gives my skin such an amazing  glow that I don’t even want to cover it up with  makeup.  I LOVE this!  It’s available at Murad.com and at the Murad Inclusive Health Spa®  as well as Sephora, Sephora.com, Ulta and leading salon and spa locations nationwide. $49.50 for 1.7 FL. OZ.

Vanilla Summer by Lavanila Laboratories

Maybe you weren’t able to get away for the weekend, but there’s still a way you can be transported to your own private summer oasis. Lavanila Laboratories, known for their beautiful and luxurious products that are 100% good for you, now has a healthly deoderant in a new limited edition fragrance.  Vanilla Summer has a soft, sexy scent that really does remind me of summer! Its blend of essential oils (fresh mango, pineapple, coconut milk and island sugar cane and Madagascar vanilla) will make you think of  hot summer nights and tropical breezes.  It’s made from natural ingredients and anti oxidants that nourish and protect the skin. It smells amazing and just makes you want to say “mmmmmmmmm”.

Give these two a try and enjoy the holiday everyone!

Great Idea: Easy Jewelry Organizer

A little known fact about me is that I am a big DIY fan.  I love projects that let me take ordinary things and turn them into fun and unique “works of art”.  So, I just spotted this photo on Pinterest and have to try it!

A simple radiator grate (from Home Depot) is a surprisingly pretty way to organize and display jewelry….Great idea!

Vitamin C: Not Just for Fighting Off Colds

At the first sign of a cold, a lot of us might think to reach for a big bottle of Vitamin C.  But did you know that the benefits of Vitamin C go way beyond keeping away the sniffles?

Lumene makes a whole line of great skin care products infused with Vitamin C, which as it turns out, also assists with the formation of collagen and protects the skin.  Created from natural Artic ingredients, Lumene products are reasonably priced and perfect for anyone who wants a holistic approach to  beauty.

A new favorite of mine is their Dry Skin Comfort Radiance Cocktail, which I use twice a day after cleansing and before my moisturizer.  It really helps out here in southern California where there’s not a lot of natural humidity to help skin stay supple. And, as a bonus, it smells really great!  www.lumene.com

How did you spend Cinco de Mayo?  I attended a fantastic event at Hollywood’s famous Velvet Margarita Cantina founded by the legendary Big Daddy Carlos.  Now in its 8th year, The Cinco de Mayo Benefit And Charity Celebrity Poker Tournament is an annual celebration of the anniversary of the cantina.  Proceeds raised will benefit the Friends of El Faro Orphanage in Tecate, Mexico.  Great charity, great food, fun night!

TRENDING: Spin Classes!…Again:)

Looking for an amazing workout where you can tone up and burn loads of calories in about an hour or less? Well, look no further than your neighborhood spin studio. I know, I know….you’re saying “wasn’t spinning popular in [like] the late 90’s”? Well, yes…but, according to SHAPE magazine, spinning is a fitness trend that is definitely back. And, celebrities like Lady Gaga, Calista Flockhart, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are big fans.

So, trying to keep up with the apparently popular-again fitness craze, I decided to check out PEDAL, one of LA’s newest studio cycling facilities. Located in the historic Arroyo Seco neighborhood near the Rose Bowl, they offer indoor cycling, TRX suspension training classes and outdoor group runs and rides.  Director Bryan Yates says they’re also active sponsors of several local fitness events including today’s Team Bicykillers Wine & Spin Event benefitting the AIDS Lifecycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Spin classes at PEDAL

So what draws celebs to places like PEDAL? Well, it’s pretty hard to pass up the benefits*:

  • Weight Loss: Spinning burns calories at a high rate — often 400-1000 calories in a 1-hour class.
  • Strength: In your core, legs, glutes and back
  • Body Shaping: Melt away flab and cellulite
  • Emotional: Spinning produces a huge endorphin rush in the brain, leaving you feeling refreshed, satisfied and accomplished.
  • Heart Health: High intensity cardio activity improves your overall health, reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • Joint Health: Spinning is a safe, low-impact workout. The circular motion eliminates pounding on joints and lower back, making it a great way to get in shape without damaging your body.

Olympic Athlete Shevon Stoddart

Athlete Shevon Stoddart, a member of Jamaica’s 2004 and 2008 Olympic track team, has been training at the PEDAL faclility 2-3 times a week during her preseason prep for the 2012 Games in London. She told me that spinning is her “little secret” and says that it helps her cardio and allows her to get workouts in without putting extra pounding on her legs.

She looks amazing….okay, I think I’m sold!

Be You, Not Them

Hi Everybody!  I am so excited and honored to be the newest member of the “It’s a Glam Thing” team!

As an actress, reporter and television spokesperson, I’ve had the chance to work with some incredibly gifted people in the entertainment, fashion and beauty industries.  And from each of those experiences, I’ve learned a lot.  But one of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years is that no matter “who you’re wearing” or whether or not your lip color is “in” this season, there’s one thing that’s for certain….no one does “me” better than “ME”!

Like a lot of others out there, I remember in junior high school wanting so desperately to be one of the cool kids in the “in” crowd.  I begged my parents to get me the same shoes the popular girls were wearing and the same clothes.  I was an avid Teen Magazine and Tiger Beat reader and was always trying the latest beauty trick in hopes of being invited to someone’s birthday party or a movie or whatever.  But…..and I’m sure you know where this is going…..I never did.   No one ever invited me to a single party or movie or even a date until I went to college.  (Pitiful, huh?)

The thing is, in truth, beauty and style are 100% subjective.  So, while I sincerely hope that you will all enjoy reading the ideas and advice I’ll be sending your way here in my new blog, I also hope that you’ll take my tips and make them your own.   As we say here in Hollywood, in my book you are all “FABULOUS”!  And if you have a tip or two for me,  don’t be stingy….SHARE!  Because no one does “you” better than “YOU”!
