What is Mommy Makeover Surgery Like?

Pregnancy can bring great joy and excitement, but it can also bring some fairly dramatic changes to a woman’s body. Pregnancy can stretch abdominal skin and muscles, leaving you with sagging loose skin that no amount of exercise will remove. It can also cause breasts to gain and lose volume, resulting in a flat or deflated appearance. A mommy makeover can correct many of your concerns about your post-pregnancy body, all during one surgery.

What Can a Mommy Makeover Treat?

A mommy makeover isn’t just a single procedure. An experienced surgeon will design a specific plan to meet your needs. Procedures included in a mommy makeover may include:

Liposuction

If you have excess fat in stubborn areas like the waist, sides, and abdomen, your mommy makeover may include liposuction to give these areas a slimmer, more contoured appearance.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, formally an abdominoplasty, often forms the basis of a mommy makeover. The surgeon will make an incision low on the abdomen and use it to lift and tighten loose skin. They will also tighten the abdominal muscles that can become loose during pregnancy. This procedure can remove the loose skin that often remains after the belly expands and deflates.

Breast Augmentation

After pregnancy and breastfeeding, breasts can lose volume and start to look flat. A breast augmentation can restore or enhance the natural appearance of your breasts. For many women, getting their pre-pregnancy breasts back is one of the main mommy makeover goals.

Breast Lift

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also cause breasts to sage. An augmentation can’t remove loose skin, so your surgeon may recommend a breast lift. This procedure lifts and reshapes the breast while removing loose skin. During this procedure, the surgeon can also reside and adjust the position of the nipples and areolas.

What is the Mommy Makeover Surgery Like?

Your surgeon will review the procedure with you before your surgery. You will go under general anesthesia for your mommy makeover. Some surgeons will perform mommy makeovers in a surgical suite, while others use the facilities of a surgical center.

The surgeon will perform all the procedures in one session. While this may sound like a lot of surgeries at the same time, this has the advantage of giving you only one recovery period. Instead of recovering separately from each surgery, you can take advantage of your downtime by recovering from more than one surgery at the same time.

You will wake up in the recovery room, and you’ll need someone to take you home and stay with you for a day or two. You will have bandages or compression garments to reduce swelling, promote blood flow, and improve healing. It may take up to a few weeks before you can return to work. You can take comfort in the fact that the results of your mommy makeover will often last a lifetime.
