What are Dermal Fillers Made Of?

Along with Botox® and its relatives, dermal fillers are among the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world. For people who hesitate to inject a foreign substance into their faces, Juvederm® fillers and Restylane® fillers use a material the body already recognizes, making the risk of a reaction almost zero.

What are Dermal Fillers Made Of?

Dermal fillers come in a range of materials, but Juvederm® and Restylane® both use hyaluronic acid. This molecule already occurs in the skin and in many moisturizers and serums because it attracts and holds onto hydration.

What is Juvederm®?

The Juvederm® family of fillers uses different formulations of hyaluronic acid. Each formula works best in a particular area of the face or solves a specific problem.

Juvederm® Vollure

This dermal filler smooths and lifts the nasolabial folds, lines that run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. This requires a formula flexible enough for this active area of the face but sturdy enough to address lines and wrinkles.

Juvederm® Volbella

The soft, flexible formula of this dermal filler makes it ideal for plumping the lips and smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. This formula has the flexibility to move with the lips, so it doesn’t stop you from smiling and speaking normally.

Juvederm® Voluma

This Juvederm® filler adds volume to the cheeks, an area where we often lose volume as we age. Rounder, fuller cheeks restore a more youthful appearance, and this sturdy formula can outlast most related fillers.

What is Restylane®?

The Restylane® family of fillers uses its own formulations of hyaluronic acid to accomplish similar jobs, although one formula may work better than another for each person.

Restylane® Kysse

With its unique cross-linking of hyaluronic acid molecules, this dermal filler is designed for use in the lips, although it also works on fine lines around the mouth.

Restylane® Refyne and Defyne

These two fillers with slightly different consistencies work to smooth out the nasolabial folds, providing a natural-looking fullness and softness.

Restylane® Lyft

This contouring filler can enhance the cheeks, chin, jaw, or almost anywhere else you want added volume but don’t need or want too much flexibility.

Restylane® Silk

Excellent for use around the mouth and enhancing the lips, this dermal filler also has a smooth, soft formula that can move with this active area of the face.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

The body will clear away hyaluronic acid fillers after a while. Fillers in very active areas like the lips and around the mouth will have the shortest lifespan, while those adding firmer volume to the cheeks will last longer.

In general, Juvederm® and Restylane® dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on which formula your provider recommends. Your provider will have preferred formulas for each use and choose the best one for you.
