New York-based top model Afiya Bennett has appeared in countless advertising campaigns and runways all over the world.
Appearing currently in Rihanna’s beauty line, Fenty Beauty, and working with brands such as Nike, Fiji Water, Rue 21, and many others, Afiya is a seasoned vet when it comes to the modeling industry.
She was recently in Hollywood lending her support to a charity event, and so It’s A Glam Thing caught up with her to chat fashion & beauty…
NICK NORTHSTAR: How would you describe your own personal style – both while at home and while out in public / on the red carpet?
AFIYA BENNETT: I would describe my personal style as sleek but sexy. I love making a statement when I walk in the room whether it be modest or not. I think that fashion is my way of making a statement without saying anything verbally. It also leaves an impression behind. I never forget an amazing jacket, pants or pair of shoes that I have seen. Statement pieces definitely inspire me to take my style to the next level.
NN: What are some of your favorite beauty products that you use to get red-carpet ready?
AB: Some of my favorite beauty products would definitely have to be the six shade concealer Pallet from Mac Cosmetics as well as the Glow Kit from Anastasia. The concealer pallet evens your complexion, and has your foundation, contour color and concealer, all in one. When it comes to the The Glow Kit, it gives your face a highlight in all the right places. This includes on the cheek bone, the bridge of your nose and the corner of your eyes. The highlight definitely makes you pop on the red carpet.
NN: As a model, who are some of your favorite fashion designers?
AB: Believe it or not one of my all time favorite stores is Zara. I think Zara is extremely stylish and affordable. However on the more upscale side of things, I adore Balmain, and Marc Jacobs. Their collections never disappoint me.
NN: What is your favorite Instagram filter? Or #NoFilter?
AB: My favorite Instagram filter is not even an Instagram filter but the first Snapchat filter. I wish Instagram had the Snapchat filters, because I usually upload my photos to Snapchat and then Instagram afterwards.
NN: What Top 3 Fashion Trends do you LOVE right now?
AB: My top three fashion trends that I love right now would have to be patent leather skirts, pants and even dresses. I also love a bold red dress, red always makes a statement and leaves an impression behind. Lastly I love a cute mom jean. You can dress it up or even dress it down on your day off.
NN: What Top 3 Fashion Trends do you HATE right now?
AB: The top three fashion trends that I hate right now would definitely start with the man romper. I do not think that men should wear rompers under any circumstances. My next fashion pet peeve would be male pants that are too tight. I think there is a fine line between being fashion forward and one’s pants simply being too small. My last fashion “No, No” would be shoes without laces. Some people may like it but it’s simply just not my taste.
NN: What is your advice to anyone wanting to pursue a full-time career in modeling?
AB: My advice to anyone wanting to pursue a full time career in modeling is to study your craft and never give up. If fitting into the industries standards of beauty is not working at the moment, don’t be discouraged; create your own platform. Lastly, I would tell them to be prepared, having tough skin is a must in this industry.
NN: What is your definition of “Glam”?
AB: My definition of Glam starts from the inside out. It is definitely amazing hair, makeup, nails, and outfit from head to toe. But it is also self confidence. How you feel about yourself, and how you view yourself will triumph any outfit and it will shine so bright that it brings the entire outfit to life.
NN: How does the style in New York compare to that in Hollywood (where you travel to often)?
AB: I think that New Yorkers are more relaxed on any every day basis but definitely show out during New York Fashion Week. That is when everyone brings out there best gear and shows it off to the world. However I feel that in Hollywood, people are a lot more glamorous all of the time. The glamour is not just in the way they dress but as an overall lifestyle.
NN: And final question… Love or hate it: the Zoolander movies?!
AB: When it comes to Zoolander movies, I love it! I definitely prefer comedy movies any day of week over scary.
