On May 8th, 2014, best selling author and co-host of the “Emmy Award” winning television program The Doctors, Ian Smith, M.D. headlined Exploring Rheumatoid Arthritis – A Live Broadcast, sponsored by Pfizer. Joining Dr. Smith was practicing board certified, and award winning Rheumatologist, Dr. R. Elaine Lambert.

This presentation was seen LIVE via satellite in 45 markets, and offered a perfect setting to present ways for people to find an approach for living with rheumatoid arthritis, and how to go about communicating with not only their doctors in regard to their condition, but share the importance of keeping an “open” dialog with friends, family, and co-workers, as well.

A “prescription treatment” option for rheumatoid arthritis was also addressed during the presentation.

By way of this live webinar both doctors were able to reach out and bring much awareness about Rheumatoid Arthritis to a wide ranging audience .

Dr. Smith and Dr. Lambert were gracious enough to take the time to answer some questions for me to share with you in this article! Below are the questions and the doctor’s answers.

Dr. Ian Smith:

1.What is Exploring Rheumatoid Arthritis – A Live Broadcast Event? How can people learn more after the event ?

“Exploring Rheumatoid Arthritis – A Live Broadcast Event was a Pfizer-sponsored program aimed at educating people with RA about the condition and an available treatment option. Exploring Rheumatoid Arthritis – A Live Broadcast Event took place on May 8 and was streamed live from New York City to more than 45 locations across the U.S. I moderated a talk-show style panel and was joined by an award-winning, board-certified rheumatologist with over 20 years of experience, Dr. R. Elaine Lambert, as well as a nurse practitioner and two patients who are living with RA.

People can still take part even after the event by going to http://www.liveraevent.com to view the archived video. The video will be available starting late summer/early fall and will serve as a great resource for information about RA and management of the condition.

People can also download “Signal Swipe,” an educational application from Pfizer, available on mobile and tablet devices and designed for RA patients. Signal Swipe provides users with an opportunity to get some information about RA and the mechanism of action for an available treatment option.

To download the app ~ Search for “Signal Swipe” on the Apple iTunes store or the Google Play store and follow download instructions.”

2. Why did you decide to partner with Pfizer on Exploring Rheumatoid Arthritis – A Live Broadcast Event?

“My goal as a TV personality and physician is to help raise awareness of health conditions that impact people’s lives and provide viewers with knowledge, information and tools to make smart, proactive decisions about their health. RA is a condition that affects 1.6 million people in the U.S. with three times as many women being affected as men. This means many families are struggling with a loved one who has this potentially debilitating condition.”

Dr. R. Elaine Lambert :

1. What is RA?
“Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease that can be painful and disabling. RA causes a range of symptoms, including stiffness and swelling in the joints, particularly those in the hands and feet, and also the knees. Although the exact cause of RA is unknown, it is considered to be an autoimmune disease, because the immune system in people with RA mistakes the body’s healthy tissues for a threat and attacks them.”

2. How many people are affected by RA?
“RA affects approximately 23.7 million people worldwide and 1.6 million people in the United States. It can develop at any time during adulthood, but it usually occurs between 40 and 70 years of age.”

3. If a patient has RA and they are not feeling well, what can they do?
“If you have RA and are not feeling well, you should make an appointment with your doctor and discuss your symptoms.”
