unnamed-47

March, 2013 (New York, NY) – Rough buns have been spotted on the runways (Fall 2014: Diane Von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera), on the red carpets and in the streets, not to mention, it’s a perfect look for a prom or wedding…or to spruce up second/third day hair. Sam Villa, founding partner of the Sam Villa® brand and education artistic director for Redken 5th Avenue, has a simple visual step-by-step any woman can follow to create the look at home: http://www.samvilla.com/how-to/step-by-step/the-rough-bun-hair-tutorial

  • Spray a moderate amount of Redken quick tease 15 throughout hair for added grit and texture.
  • Gather hair together into a high ponytail and secure with a clear elastic.
  • Split ponytail into 3 or 4 sections (depending on density of hair).
  • Use the fine teeth of a Sam Villa Tail Comb to backcomb each section of ponytail.
  • Make sure to place each section in the direction you want it to go to form a circle.
  • Working from the center and outer layer of each section, use the comb to gently smooth the top, making sure not to pull the backcombing out.
  • Roll the first section under and forward to create a barrel curl and secure with a bobby pin.
  • Continue around head, rolling each section to create a circle – make sure to spread each section evenly to cover any unwanted spaces.
  • Finish off with Redken fashion work 12 hairspray.

“A rough bun is a great alternative for those who have layers that can’t quite wrap together smoothly for a polished bun, because it’s very forgiving,” explains Villa.
