FROM THE PROS: Can a Fitness & Wellness Regimen Empower Women

Celebrity Trainer Holly Perkins Explains 3 Reasons Why It Can

From an early age, women have foisted on them images of the “ideal” female body, and self-esteem can plummet when they fail to measure up.
But celebrity trainer Holly Perkins says it’s time women stop buying into those societal pressures.

“There’s this perception that all women need to look like perfect runway models,” says Perkins. “They can feel the anxiety building when they are trying to meet someone else’s expectations. That’s when the effort to lose weight or get fit can add to the stresses of life instead of relieving them.”

Certainly, women should want to improve their health, get fit and look gorgeous all at the same time, says Perkins, who recently released a home-exercise system designed specifically for women called baladea (http://baladea.com), with regimens she developed to fuse fitness and wellness exercises.

But getting in shape needs to be something women want for themselves, and not an effort to mimic some airbrushed image on a magazine cover at the supermarket, she says.

Perkins realized several years ago that her clients met their weight-loss goals faster when she created programs that addressed both their fitness and wellness needs at the same time.

They also felt happier about themselves. So she incorporated yoga and other stress-relieving and relaxation techniques into the baladea program.

Perkins offers three reasons why the right fitness and wellness regimen can empower women and emancipate them from society’s image pressures:

• Because looking good makes you feel good. That’s especially true when you’re trying to look good to please yourself and not others, Perkins says. “There’s this sense of empowerment when you exercise, eat a healthier diet and lose weight because it’s what you want and not because of peer pressure or societal pressures,” she says.

Self-esteem rises when you improve your image on your terms, she says, and as a result “looking gorgeous never felt better.”

• Because the science says so. Research shows that stress can keep you from losing weight and might even cause you to add pounds. Even if you eat well and exercise, an excessive amount of stress can counteract all your efforts. That’s why meshing fitness and wellness works so well, Perkins says.

“Stress reduction and relaxation can significantly improve weight loss,” she says. “That allows you to look and feel your absolute best.”

• Because while improving your look, you also become healthier. You will feel amazing not just because of elevated self-esteem, but because your body really is functioning better because of the diet and exercise, Perkins says. Your energy level will rise and “you will feel ready for anything,” she says.

“You can look awesome and you can feel happy at the same time,” Perkins says. “It’s all about letting your true self shine.”

Before I share with you the Tanning Laws from the Creators of Pur~lisse Skincare and Karora Cosmetics, allow me to fill you in on a little tid-bit. Pur-lisse has a Skincare Line which promises to help you attain the healthiest skin possible. If you have sensitive skin, Pur~lisse Skincare is a line you definitely need to consider. Pur~lisse is French for “pure” and “smooth”, a perfect combination for this anti-aging skincare line.

Pur~lisse Skincare is formulated with five unique ingredients, Blue lotus flower, Lupine Peptides, White tea, Soy Protein and Sea Silk. You can read more about these ingredients at their website purlisse.com, which also states “Pur~lisse blends traditional Chinese beauty rituals of yesteryear with today’s French skincare technology. The result—a coveted pure and effective skincare system in sophisticated, functional packaging for your modern lifestyle.”

Another fabulous feature of Pur~lisse Skincare is that it is free of parabens, petrochemicals, color, fragrance, propylene glycol, phthalates, and no animal tested is ever involved.

Since the summer started I have been a faithful user of Pur~lisse pur~protect spf 30 sunscreen. I love it! It’s a great moisturizer as well as a sunscreen and is very light in texture. This sunscreen provides me with full- spectrum sun protection and as soon as I apply it, I’m ready to start my day. We all need to fight the signs of aging by protecting our skin from the sun and Pur~lisse Anti-aging formulations will keep our skin looking its best.

pur_lisse_bright_and_beautiful_kit_medium

Of course I use Pur~lisse pur~delicate gentle soy milk cleanser before applying my sunscreen. The cleanser is also important to use at the end of the day because it is a thorough cleanser and make-up remover. I especially like that this cleanser is soap-free and its non-irritating formula allows me to cleanse without having to take my contact lenses out. That’s a big plus for me when choosing cleansers. The silky soft skin you are left with after cleansing definitely has me coming back for more.

Pur~lisse Skincare carries moisturizers, anti-aging serums, lip serums, eye serums, white tea and some unique starter kits. You will find the entire skincare line at shop.purlisse.com

Now, let’s get to The Tan Commandments – Fun Sun Safety This Summer:
Fake It Don’t Bake It, The Tanning Laws from the Creators of Pur~lisse Skincare and Karora Cosmetics

Thou Shall Exfoliate::

Buff away skin debris and dead (dull!) skin cells for a natural skin brightening boost!

Pur~lisse Expert Top Tip: A dollop of pur~delicate gentle soy milk cleanser on an exfoliating mitt can be used from head to toe for a pre-tan full body buff and polish!

Karora Expert Top Tip: Use an exfoliating mitt with your body scrub to rid of any dirt or dead skin cells to prep for the best Karora glow possible!

:: Thou Shall Hydrate The Skin::

When pouring yourself a summer sangria, offer your skin a drink too! It will thank you for it.
The summer sun can rob the skin of moisture, rehydrate with plenty of fluids (a glass of water for every prosecco!) and be generous with the moisturizer.

Pur~lisse Expert Top Tip: Apply a small amount of pur~moist across the complexion for superior vitamin infused skin hydration experience. Feeling skin generous? Legs, arms and tummy’s will thank you for the moisturizng love too.

Karora Expert Top Tip: Apply a quarter sized portion of Karora’s Gradual Tan Lotion to each section of the body for a moisturizing and beautiful bronze glow!

:: Thou Shall Treat Damage From Summers’ Gone By::

Erase the evidence from a few hours too many on the sun lounger with corrective skincare solutions.

Pur~lisse Expert Top Tip: Brightening skin agents are your friend for reducing pigmentation and sun spots. Look for products that are Retin A and Salicylic Acid-free, these will thin the skin and damage the integrity of it if used over long periods of time. Pur~lisse pur~bright is enriched with plant extracts that will correct and strengthen the skin surface for a luminous summer complexion!

Karora Expert Top Tip: Treat your damaged skin with nourishing skin caring botanicals from Karora’s CC Cream. It can be used on both face & body for color complexion perfection!

: :Thou Shall Not Forget To Prep The Pout::

The summer sun can cause dry and chapped lips. Kiss and makeup with some luscious lip protection!

Pur~lisse Expert Top Tip: Lavish fruit butters and vegetable oils will ensure your summer smile is as smooth as your dance floor moves! Pur~lip Comfort is a fab daily lip nourisher.

Karora Expert Top Tip: Keep those beautiful lips moisturized at all times by carrying a lip balm with you where ever you go!

: :Thou Shall Preserve Youthful Looking Skin::

While the sun can accelerate the aging process, your beauty arsenal can slow it down!

Pur~lisse Expert Top Tip: Coax a youthful glow back into your skin with a powerful peptide complex. Pur~youth Preserve will improve skin texture due to its cocktail of Vitamin E, Rice Bran Oil and Wheat Proteins to give summer induced aging skin the boot!

Karora Expert Top Tip: Karora’s #1 beauty secret is to spray the Tinted Self Tan Mist on your face before you apply your makeup for a beautiful glow that will develop throughout the day!

:: Thou Shall Use SPF Every Day::

All rays were not created equal! UVB causes skin cancer and burning. UVA causes wrinkles. Who wants either? Wear SPF religiously!

Pur~lisse Expert Top Tip: Its’ all about location, location, location. Remember the sun rays are stronger the closer you get to the equator. Reapply every few hours when enjoying the great outdoors this summer. Pur~Protect SPF30 is a full spectrum (UVB and UVA protection), light weight nourishing moisturizer. Can be used under makeup for alfresco dining and cocktails at the beach!

Karora Expert Top Tip: Treat your skin to a healthy faux glow with Karora’s Ultra Dark Bronzing Mousse. You will be able to maintain your glow without overexposing your skin to the harmful and damaging UV rays from the sun.

From the PROS: The Beyonce Diet: Pros and Cons

Summer is here and that means time to get fit! With all these diets going around, do you know which one is best for you? The newest is Beyoncé’s standby 22 Day Vegan Diet, which promises quick and permanent results including a meal delivery service. Not sure if it’s for you? Let’s look at the Pros and Cons from Amanda Foti, Registered Dietitian for https://www.selvera.com
unnamed-3

PROS:

1.       Eating Targeted Food Groups. As a rule of thumb, avoiding processed foods and increasing plant-based foods in your diet has been shown to improve a variety of health issues such as cholesterol levels and reduce risk of developing chronic diseases.

2.       Easily Available. The meal delivery option takes all the work out of it for the client. This makes it easy if you don’t have the time or knowledge to figure out exactly what you should be eating every day.

3.       Healthy Balance of Foods. Includes a healthy balance of unrefined carbs, plant based protein and heart healthy fats.

4.       Motivational. Following a very structured diet for 22 days could serve as a great kick starter to motivate those who want to change their eating habits.

CONS:

1.       Expensive! To stick with their meals and products exclusively is going to require some cash, as it is quite expensive!

2.       Long Term Commitment. In terms of kick starting healthy eating habits, this takes several months of commitment and sometimes the additional support of an expert.

3.       Restrictive. To be successful in keeping the weight off, be prepared to adopt these restrictions long term. Once the diet is over and you go back to old eating habits, the weight will likely creep in once more!

4.       Lack of Personalized Treatment. Meeting nutrition needs on a vegan diet is possible, but takes work. As a dietitian, when a client informs me they are vegan I immediately inquire about certain essential nutrients that plants may not be adequate in providing, like B12 and iron. This often times warrants a supplement. Unless you are working 1-on-1 with an expert or have the time and resources to research on your own, how do you know

Eugenia Kuzmina, a good friend of IAGT and client of former IAGT Men’s Editor, Anthony Turk shares her story with Renee’ Ward

In an exclusive Q&A with Renée Ward, Russian-born supermodel turned actress and stand-up comedian Eugenia Kuzmina shares how she landed modeling jobs in her early teens and how working early in life shapes who she is today. http://www.examiner.com/article/at-15-eugenia-kuzmina-shared-the-catwalk-with-fashion-icon-naomi-campbell

unnamed-6

Eugenia Kuzmina

Kuzmina’s modeling career took off when she started working with Ford Models Europe.

She was the cover girl for the August 2004 edition of Glamour and has been featured in advertisements for Armani Jeans, Dior sunglasses, GAP, Arden B, Express, Kenzi, Replay Jeans, Sephora, and L’Oreal. She has also been featured in magazines, such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Japanese and Russian Vogue, GQ, Self, Shape, as well as catalogs for Hermès and Cartier.

In 2015 Kuzmina portrays Gulla opposite Danny McBride , Scott Caan and Bill Murray in the film, Rock The Kasbah, appears in a scene with Christopher Walken in a Jason Bateman film, The Family Fang and another feature, Dirty Grandpa directed by Dan Mazer , where she portrays a judgmental hippie Cathy, opposite Zac Efron.

Kuzmina is passionate about comedy and can frequently be seen doing stand-up at The Comedy Store and Flappers.

This is another in a series of articles about the “first jobs” of successful people, their advice for today’s teens, and reflects the value of work early in life. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Ward: What was your first paying job?
Kuzmina:
I started modeling for pay when I was 14 years old. It was a time when several American companies came to Russia to scout young models. I was featured in national commercials for RC Cola and M&M’s. I was obsessed with all the products. It was a great opportunity for me to make some money for my family because we were poor even though my father worked for the government he wasn’t paid well. We grew up in food lines. Then, my father passed away when I was 15 and it was just my mom, little sister and me.

I had been approached by several people to go to France to model but up until then my mom was afraid that I would be sold and end up in Turkey to dance on tables or worse. It was like the Wild West. At that time it was a huge thing in Russia. Even now I try to advise young women to be aware of this situation especially if someone just comes up to them on the street.

A scout came to my school and asked to meet with me and my mom. He had all the contract papers from the agency and we checked it out and found it was all legitimate. It was a big step because I had to go by myself and stay in my first apartment. I was 15 and in Paris when I landed my first big paying job. The agency started sending me out to a lot of fashion shows. I remember that I didn’t have any fashion sense whatsoever.

They sent me to audition for Yves Saint Laurent. But before I could meet with him I had to buy something special to wear because they told me he was very visual and particular. I bought these expensive shoes and dress which for me was a lot of money. I went into this beautiful house which was like a palace. It was a real Cinderella moment for me. I had not yet learned how to walk in high heels. The casting director looked me over and gave me the go ahead to audition before Laurent. It was shortly before his death and one of his last fashion shows.

I had to go through full hair and makeup first. Backstage there were all these skinny models that were gorgeous creatures. They transformed me completely. I remember red lips and dark eyes. As a 15 year old, I was like oh my God, who is that. I was really shocked with what they could do.

The room he was in was full of smoke because he smoked a lot. The French smoke a lot and still live to be 100. I don’t know how they can do that. I earned the right to be on the catwalk alongside fashion icons like Naomi Campbell and Carla Bruni. It was crazy because I never thought about it.

Ward: Why do you feel you earned that opportunity? What made you stand out?
Kuzmina:
At that point I was not aware of anything. As a teenager, I was just learning about myself. I would definitely say it was more for my look. I was not this wise creature. I would say I was just a normal teenager.

Ward: Did anything go wrong? If so, how did you overcome the challenges?
Kuzmina:
I definitely went through insecurities. I would go to places where people didn’t speak English very well or my English wasn’t good enough and I would feel like an outcast as if it was my fault that people wouldn’t speak to me. The good thing is I learned French.

As a teenager, it was hard for me to say no. I still hadn’t learned the boundaries yet. There were times when the photographers would push to make me do a shoot that was really uncomfortable. At the time I was not okay with saying, no, I’m not going to do that. I really needed the money for my family, so I went through shoots that I regret.

As a model you live with everybody watching you. I went through stages fighting with food. I had to go to doctors to learn how to be healthy. There were periods where I would not eat anything because people would tell me I had to lose weight. I remember my hair falling out and having no energy. A lot of things were thrown at me that affected my self-esteem. I remember crying after casting calls when I wasn’t chosen.

It took me a long time to realize that it wasn’t about me, it was about their vision.

Thank God I had a feeling of hope always. I knew at some point that I had to leave Paris and go to London which changed my life completely. I started trusting myself more and building better friendships. I always felt that I had to do things besides modeling. In the U.S. I think there are better laws and they are much more civilized in a way. Modeling is not such a crazy industry today like it was back then.

Ward: Was there anyone in your life as a teen that you would consider a mentor?
Kuzmina:
Well, you know, there were people like in and out of my life and different kinds of experiences but I’m a Capricorn and I think I had the strength of character to just move forward and trust my instincts. I would listen to people but at the end of the day think how does this make me feel. I jumped into a relationship when I was 18, a quasi-mentorship with an older man that became controlling and I knew I had to get out of it. I knew it wasn’t normal. I would never just follow somebody’s lead just because they said so.

Ward: What have you learned from your teen work experiences that have prepared you for what you are doing now?
Kuzmina:
I learned that I am a strong person. I can trust myself. That I can achieve anything I want to and I do not have to depend on anyone to be happy.

Ward: What advice do you have for teens today seeking their first jobs?
Kuzmina
: Pursue what you love to do. Don’t necessarily listen to others. Ask yourself, what are you passionate about? It doesn’t matter about the amount of money involved. You can start from a small position.

Don’t have an ego that you have to be at the top straight away.

Reach out to the people that are in the business that you like and talk to them.

Start from a place of service. It’s about what can you contribute to the job and in that way… things will change over time.

Now Is The Time To Take A Fashion Risk

1-shirtdresses-w724-1

As most fashion followers know, June is not only the first month of summer, but its fashion month. It’s a time for people to show up and show out. Whether going to the grocery store, dinner, or red carpet events, June is a time for the conservative and sloppy dressers of the world to throw their style inhibition to the wind and take fashion risks.

Let’s be honest, wearing the same look day in and day out is boring. The problem is, too many people are afraid of what others think about what they wear. The little voice in our head is constantly questioning our outfits, “is this too tight” or “is this too loose”, but what’s tight for one person may be loose for another. That’s why June is all about finding fashion trends that people can actually wear in their everyday lives. Let’s discuss the latest Summer 2015 trends that can take people for blah to BAM!

Shirtdresses

Designers are reimagining this classic shape with drop waists, double high slits, and different width belts. It’s hard to figure out what to love more about this look: the sleeve, the collar that frames the face ever so perfect, or the comfortable yet flattering length. One things for sure, It’s a one stop shop for effortless chic.

Yellow

Before you roll your eyes and say “not for me,” hear me out. From amber and canary to saffron and marigold, trust that there is a shade of yellow for everyone. The tricky part is figuring out your skin’s undertone, then finding the hue that best complements it. Keep in mind that yellow is a happy color, and has been known to attract positive vibes

Gingham

Fall may have brought us proper plaids, but for summer it’s all about the tiny well organized check. Whether you opt for a fitted or loose look, those little checks have a sexy written all over them. Check Please-

Black and White

The trend’s not groundbreaking, but black and white is everywhere. Always has been and always will be. Some people just need to be reminded how to keep it fresh. To keep this classic color combination interesting, one must mix various textures, patterns, and silhouettes.

Kimono-Style Light Weight Trench Coats

Slouchy, lightweight trench coats—belted just so—were spotted all over the runways this season. I’m a sucker for a good layer, and why wouldn’t I be? This look is comfortable, stylish  and a mix between a robe, a proper coat, and a kimono. It’s a win any way you look at it.

Frame-Denim-Spring-2015-w724

Head-to-Toe White

At this point, it isn’t about the rules of when you can wear all-white; it’s about how you wear it. New styling tricks include mixing textures, layering multiple pieces, and teaming various shades. All white everything is a statement that we should all be attempting to make. It oozes confidence.

Flats, Slides, and Sneakers

Thank the fashion gods, comfortable shoes are here to stay! So whether you’re a sneakerhead, appreciate minimal two-strap sandals, or love plain slides—there’s something cute and comfy out there for you. Feet around the world are saying thank you.

What’s most important is having fun with the looks, not wearing them all at once, and remembering that clothes are temporary ways of expressing yourself, they’re not life changing. Just think of June as a one month pass to try different styles and not worry about anything but how each piece makes you feel.

DOES A COLD SORE MAKE YOU WANT TO RUN FOR COVER?

The Carmex® “Let’s Get Closer” Survey Reveals How People Really Feel

If you are one of more than half of Americans between the ages of 21-54, who say they have ever had a cold sore, you may also share the attitudes and behaviors of people who know how these unattractive and unwelcome cold sores may make you feel.

Carma Laboratories, the company that has been manufacturing Carmex® lip balm for over 78 years, recently introduced Carmex® Cold Sore Treatment, a product that works on contact to block pain and itch while minimizing the appearance of a cold sore1. Cold sores can be inconvenient, embarrassing and always seem to happen at the most inopportune time. In order to better understand the social challenges cold sores create, Carma Laboratories recently completed a Harris Poll of over 1,100 adults age 21-54.

So, just how do Americans feel about cold sores? According to the Carmex “Let’s Get Closer” survey*, almost half of adults ages 21-54 would be very to somewhat likely to cancel a date if they woke up with a cold sore. This feeling was more prevalent among women and men between the ages of 21-44. A geographic breakdown shows this to be more of a reality among people from the South (56%) or Midwest (49%).

More than 1 in 4 Americans said they would be very to somewhat likely to postpone a job interview. Interestingly, men were more likely to say that they would be somewhat likely to take a day off from work because of a cold sore.

Twenty nine (29%) percent acknowledge that they would wonder if the cold sore was contagious and (26%) percent would wonder if it was herpes. Close to 2 in 5 said they would be very to somewhat likely to cut short a date if their date showed up with a cold sore.

It would seem obvious that no one really wants to kiss someone if they have a cold sore, yet surprisingly, men might still consider it! Sixty seven (67%) of women said they would be very unlikely to do this, while (57%) say they would be unlikely.

If you do have an occasional or frequent cold sore, do you ever wonder what people are thinking when they see you? Gratifyingly, (68%) of those ages 21-34 and (67%) of those ages 35-44 think “That must be painful.” Forty nine percent (49%) of ages 45-54 share this reaction. On the other hand, caution prevails.  Thirty one percent (31%) between 21-44 wonder if it’s contagious versus (22%) of ages 45-54. Herpes is on people’s minds too when they see a cold sore with (29%) of 21-34 year olds and (28%) of 35-44 year olds wondering if the cold sore might be herpes. Interestingly, men (13%) are more likely than women (7%) to think that the person with a cold sore isn’t clean.

Only NEW Carmex® Cold Sore Treatment works on contact to block pain and itch while minimizing the appearance of a cold sore. 10% Benzocaine blocks pain and itch, while the TriPLEX™ Formula technology smoothes and fills to make the cold sore less noticeable. And, it works on contact – so you see and feel results fast. While no product can cure a cold sore, this breakthrough product may help sufferers feel more comfortable and confident while managing through a cold sore outbreak.

A patient’s story how Abbott’s MitraClip corrected her mitral valve regurgitation

Degenerative Mitral regurgitation (DMR) is caused when the leaflets of the mitral valve do not close properly, allowing blood to flow backward and leak into the left atrium of the heart. A leaky heart valve can increase the pressure on the heart and, over time, result in heart failure

Abbott’s MitraClip treats mitral regurgitation. As referred to above, this condition where the mitral valve of the heart does not close properly can result in blood leakage that can lead to stroke, heart attack, or even death.

Meet Betty V.
MrsVaughn_NewStill_002_Cropped
Betty is a patient who overcame Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation with an Abbott Mitral Clip, procedure, and was kind enough to take the time to share the story about her experience with DMR. I know you’ll find it very inspiring!

My interview with Betty V:

VICKI: What were your symptoms and when did you first notice them?

BETTY: Three years ago, I began experiencing symptoms of a common, yet serious condition called degenerative mitral regurgitation. Going up and down stairs, I couldn’t breathe and would become lightheaded and terribly tired.

VICKI: What actually happened that made you talk to your doctor?

BETTY: I had to quit working in my yard and going for daily walks. My cardiologist told me to “live with it.” But I felt it wasn’t living, rather, I was existing. I kept thinking it would go away until I found myself lying on my steps completely out of breath. After that, I knew I needed to do something. So I found a new cardiologist who listened to me.

VICKI: That had to be quite distressing. It’s good that you sought out a new cardiologist who took the time to listen! What was your diagnosis?

BETTY: My new cardiologist found that my mitral valve was not working properly, and he told me in simple terms that my heart valve was “leaking.”

VICKI: What were the treatment options your doctor gave you?
BETTY: My new cardiologist recommended treatment with the MitraClip device since open heart surgery was not recommended for me.

VICKI: So what did you decide to do about it?

BETTY: After speaking with my cardiologist about what to expect, I decided to undergo the MitraClip procedure.

VICKI: How would you describe the procedure?
BETTY:
As my doctor explained to me, the procedure was a minimally-invasive option in which the doctor would use a catheter to implant the device through a vein in my leg.

VICKI: How long after the procedure did you start to notice a difference in how you felt?

BETTY: When my cardiologist came in to visit me shortly after my procedure, I told him that I felt like a weight had been lifted off of my chest. I was pleased that, within 48 hours, I was back home, feeling good again.

VICKI: Betty …. That’s terrific! What do you like to do for fun and how did your disease impact your ability to do those things? Now, Are you able to do those things you enjoyed, once again since you’ve had the procedure?

BETTY: I still live independently, garden, play bridge regularly with my friends, and visit my children and grandchildren. It is safe to say that I am physically active. Before the procedure, I had to give some of these activities up. But now that I have had the procedure I have happily returned to these activities.

VICKI: That’s so great to hear, Betty. What would you recommend people do if they find themselves in a similar situation as yours?

BETTY: I would encourage others who have a problem with their heart valve to speak with their doctors about treatment options. If I hadn’t had this procedure, I’d probably be in a nursing home. That’s the difference. I’m doing much better, and I’m truly living my life.

Thank you, Betty, for taking the time to share your personal experience with Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation. Your story and success with the Mitra Clip is very encouraging. I’m sure readers who may be experiencing challenges as you have experienced, will now be more informed as they talk with their doctors regarding treatment in dealing with their condition. Wishing you ongoing health and wellness!
