Obesity: Let’s talk about it!

Obesity

Did you know that obesity (adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and over) is considered a disease and morbid obese (adults with a BMI of 40 or more) is classified as a disability? More than 35% of adults in the United States are obese. I am here to help fight this disease. Here are three things you can start doing today! It is as easy as 1,2, 3.

1. Consume more fruits and vegetables. I know you have been hearing this since elementary school but now it is time for you to put this into action. It really is not as difficult as you think. Drink a smoothie made with fruit for breakfast, you can even throw in some spinach and it is delicious. Make a salad with green leafy vegetables, sliced strawberries and even toss in an orange for lunch, you just made a perfect summer salad. Make sure you have at least a cup of fruit or vegetables at each meal.

2. Decrease consumption of energy dense food. The definition of energy density is the amount of energy or calories in a particular weight of food and is generally presented as
the number of calories. Example of high density foods are cookies, chips and ice cream. These foods have lots of calories in a small portion. Eat foods that you can get more of with less calories: hint fruits and vegetables. Energy dense foods are commonly cheap and inexpensive. Remember, you are what you eat so don’t be cheap and easy!

3. Increase your physical activity.
Move that body! Increasing your physical activity will help you in many ways like improving your energy to helping you sleep better. The key is find something you love to do and do it! Schedule your activity. For example, I enjoy playing tennis so I schedule it into my week. It is an appointment and we all know that once something is in your schedule you have to follow through with it.

These 3 things are just a few simple things you can do that can help improve your life as well as help fight this epidemic that is sweeping our country. Let’s do our part and fight obesity together.

Take the Dieter Quiz: True or False

Missing_Meals_Bulking
True or False: Skipping a meal helps you lose weight

Have you ever heard this? Girl, I’m going to skip breakfast and lunch, so I can drop a few pounds before the party tonight, then when I get there, get my grub on. Now, tell me do you really think that will work? FALSE, as a matter of fact you are doing more harm than good to your body. Skipping meals puts your body in starvation mode. It will hold on to everything you have stored, because it thinks this could be it’s last meal. Your brain turns to mush and you can’t focus, plus you get hangry. Yeah, you heard me, hangry is real (hungry and anger). You know as well as I do that you are most definitely going to that party and going overboard on the eating. Trust me I know. When your blood sugar drops, you are just not yourself. You lash out and become very mean. Beyond being mean, you self-sabotage by over-eating when you finally get your hands on food. Binge eating happens and then you end up GAINING weight, which was your reason for skipping meals in the first place, was to lose weight. So don’t skip meals, eat sensibly, without having heavy meals but put something in your body so you can function. You must feed your body in order to lose weight, I know it sounds crazy, but it is true.

True or False: Your genetics determine your weight

Come on guys say it with me ”Everybody in my family is big boned!” Hmm, have you ever seen a big-boned skeleton? I haven’t but, I have tried to use this one myself! But it is false! Your genetics make up 70% of your size, 10% diet and 10% fitness. We, as a family tend to be about the same size because we eat the same way. We generally have the same eating habits. Let’s break the cycle. It really isn’t as hard as you think. Something you can do today to make a change, eat one healthy meal today, go ahead make your next meal balanced, appropriate portions and full of leafy vegetables.

Clock True or False: Eating after 8pm makes you gain weight?

Here is another one we have all heard “I don’t eat after 8pm, I don’t want to gain weight.” This is so FALSE. Unless you go to bed at 8 you should still give your body fuel. If you are awake your body is still functioning. You should eat every 3 to 4 hours no matter the time. I am not saying eat a big mac and fries late at night but eat something like nuts, fruit, and even popcorn. You want something light and satisfying so that your metabolism keeps working. The only time you don’t eat is when you are asleep, hence breakfast! You wake up and eat, breaking that fast! You have to eat to lose weight (remember myth #2, no starving the body).

No-Meat5
True or False: Going vegetarian to lose weight

I think I am so, over this, let me repeat so OVER people doing this! It is FALSE you are not going to lose weight just because you are going vegetarian. Elephants are vegetarian and they are not skinny. However, the lions are meat eaters and they are lean, fast and powerful. Just because you are given up meat doesn’t mean that your food doesn’t have calories. It is true if you stop eating meat and are eating plant based food, eating more fruits and vegetables, which tend to be less calories and really filling, you can lose weight. But if your idea of being a vegetarian is eating larger portions of high calories food like French fries, creamy pasty and of course that wonderful veggie pizza then you are most likely going to gain weight. The key is to eat a balanced meal, proper portions even with meat! Me myself I love being a Lioness!

True or False: Eating all you want because I exercise

I saved the best for last! Because this was surely me! It is False. I was that chick who was at the gym every morning at 5:30am when they opened, did my cardio, hit the weights and ate EVERYTHING I wanted. Oh yeah, I was a size 24. I would totally tell myself, I can eat this, I work out! Well so not true! Losing weight is very simple, it’s all about the numbers, calories in vs. calories out! Math is not my favorite subject but hey, I figured it out. In order to lose weight, I had to burn more calories than I consume, simple!

Towel and Scarf had a baby…. SweatSTR

B_DNPyeVIAApmA6_grande

I must admit, I am that chick who goes to the gym looking rough; I really don’t care what I look like when I work out. My mindset is I go to the gym to work out and look good when I am away from the gym. Ok, I said I WAS that chick. Now there are so many fashionably fit accessories that allow you to exercise hard and look fashionable. I go to the gym with as little as possible, I don’t even bring a gym bag.

There are many ladies who pack their gym bag to the brim. They carry everything in it but the kitchen sink. I on the other hand don’t even bring a towel. I know, I know that’s so bad, but I do wipe off each machine before and after I use them. The reason I don’t bring a towel is simple. I know a lot of people worry about germs and don’t want their towels on the floor or bench. I don’t worry too much about germs, (as I said before, I wipe it off before I use the machine anyway) but I do worry about where I leave my towel. Did I leave it on a machine, in the restroom, or on the bench? I have lost so many towels because once I am in my zone; I’m focused on my workout and getting out of there. I do however have to keep stopping to get a paper towel between sets to wipe my sweaty face. The developer of SweatSTR must have been watching me at the gym because this product is exactly what I need.

SweatSTR is a hands free towel that can be worn as a scarf. What? Can you believe it, a workout towel that can be worn around your neck without it slipping off or tripping you up on the treadmill? It is not only fashionable, but very useful in this cold, rainy weather. SweatSTR is lightweight and made with 100% cotton sweat absorbent material so it doesn’t feel heavy around your neck.

I can now throw on my workout scarf towel, workout jacket and hit the gym without worrying about stopping and getting a paper towel to wipe off my sweat and I still don’t need a gym bag. Click on the link to get your and this is a great gift for the active people in your life! http://www.sweatstr.com

Be Like a Tree…Change and Let GO!

tree

More than 10 million women are suffering with their body image and it can affect your self-esteem. I am one of the 10 million women that suffers with their body image. I confess, I am coming clean and speaking 100% honest to you. I have lost over 115 pounds and still suffer with my body image. When I look in the mirror I don’t see the image that everyone else sees. It is weird to explain to those of you who have not lost a lot of weight or even gained weight, our minds eye sees what it wants to see versus with is really reflected in the mirror.

You have seen women walking down the street and think, what in the world? Did they NOT look in the mirror before they left the house? (or it could be you) Chances are they did and they really liked what they saw. That is why they are walking out in the streets head up and chest out. It’s so hard to judge others because I know I am guilty of it myself. Almost all of us were either small and gained weight or big and lost weight, but the true test is how we adjust. There are many things that need to adjust, our wardrobe, our attitude, our mind set. We must adjust to reflect that change that has physically taken place. I know that it is hard for us to see our true image, the image that others see us as, our minds eye is very powerful, trust me. Let me share with you some of the tricks and tips that I have learned to use to view myself.

When I look in the mirror, I see a little chunky Elizabeth looking back at me. But in order to see what others see, I take a picture of myself….the camera does not lie. Have you seen a picture of yourself and say “Do I really look like that?” or “Do I look fat?” Well it could be the lighting, it could be that you are in mid smile or mid conversation but your body is what it is. So if you say Dang I look fat in this picture…..that’s probably how other people see you. It could be a million reasons why the picture is not flattering but if you are finding yourself saying “I look fat” in almost every picture you take, you really should look at yourself as you are and not as you were.

There are several things you can do to help improve your self-image and self-esteem. We all know the most obvious is working out and eating right. When we take time to be good to our bodies we really feel good about ourselves. Our self-esteem gets a boost regardless of the scale, we feel as though we are in control, we are making ourselves strong and healthy, instead of letting everything control our bodies.

Another way to feel good about yourself is get new clothes, that fit! I know you used to wear a size 8 but now you are a size 10 or vice versa. No one sees the size of your clothes, the tag is on the inside of your clothes for a reason. Find the size that fits your body style no matter the size on the tag. When you are wearing the proper size jeans no one is saying Dang, I wonder what size those jeans are she is wearing. They are saying Dang she is rocking those jeans!! However, try to squeeze your size 10 into a size 8 and the responses will be a whole lot different. First of all, you won’t feel comfortable and others will be able to tell that as well.

Try a new hair style. Getting a new do is hard, trust me I know. If you have had the same hair style for the past 10 years, it’s time for a change. A cut, new color or even a part on the opposite side. Change is good, not easy but good, it pushes us out of our comfort zone and shakes us up a bit. The great thing about hair is, that it’s just hair and it will grow back or easily change back to what you had before. Try to sit with that new do for at least 4 weeks before going back to your safe style.

Let’s take a lesson from the trees, watch how they change and let things go. This is a great time of the year to clean out your closet, set those new goals, change and let go of the old.
