Get Glam FAST!

Wow, it’s been a busy summer!  I’ve had a ton of great auditions lately.  Traditionally, summer has always been the slower time for actors who work in television because most productions go on hiatus during this time of the year.  But over the past 5 years or so a lot of that has changed.  TV shows along with films, commercials, industrials and webisodes, are in production throughout the year now.  So (thankfully) I always seem to be studying lines and running off to a casting.

Here’s a little tip from “Acting 101”:  When you go in for an audition you should always try to “look the part”.  So if you’ re reading for the part of a lawyer, you shouldn’t show up in jeans and a tee shirt, unless the script specifically says that’s what the character is wearing.  And, of course your makeup should match the part as well.

The thing is, I rarely have lots of time to sit in front of a mirror to get ready.  While some roles might just call for a little mascara and lip gloss, most of the time I’m reading for parts that require full “glam” makeup.  And casting directors do expect you to come in “camera ready”.   Luckily, over the years, I’ve been able to get my entire full-makeup routine down to about 12 minutes.  Pretty good, huh?

Well, I should say it’s 12 minutes if I’m using mascara.  But, whenever I’ve tried to use false eyelashes, it’s more like 20-25 minutes, if I’m lucky. I’ll admit it:  I’ve always been a faux lash challenged.  But I love them!  They just really give your eyes that extra little pop that really shows up on camera or stage.  But with having to wait around for the glue to dry and then the challenge of putting them on straight, wearing them has never really fit well into my fast routine…..until now! I’ve just started wearing Andrea® Redi-Lash Self-Adhesive Lashes and they are fantastic!

We Like It Hot…Zaggora Hot!

One of the best things about living in Hollwood for me has been the chance to make some really fantastic female friends over the years.  And yes, I may be biased, but they really are all fabulously talented, intelligent and beautiful, both inside and out!  They are also great sources of information on the latest beauty tips and newest fashion and makeup trends.

One such lovely lady is my friend Candace Kita, a fellow actress and model who is also an author, women’s safety advocate and host of a weekly radio show on LA Talk Radio.

With all of her activities it’s a wonder that she also consistently finds time to fit in regular gym workouts, but she does and always looks great!  When I came across Zaggora Hot Pants, I knew she would love them.  Here’s what she had to say:

Are You Getting Your Beauty Sleep?

We’ve all heard how important sleep is to our health.  According to the Harvard Women’s Health Watch, there are six reasons to get enough sleep:

  1. Learning and memory: Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. In studies, people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later.
  2. Metabolism and weight: Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering levels of hormones that affect our appetite.
  3. Safety: Sleep debt contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. These lapses may cause falls and mistakes such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.
  4. Mood: Sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. Too little sleep can also leave you too tired to do the things you like to do.
  5. Cardiovascular health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.
  6. Disease: Sleep deprivation alters immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells. Keeping up with sleep may also help fight cancer.

But what about the importance of sleep to our looks?  You know what I’m talking about.  How many mornings (of afternoons) have you awakened after a long night of partying, or cramming for exams, or insomnia and looked like ________ ……well, not as great as you might like?

The fact is, while telling someone you need your “beauty sleep” might be a pretty good way to get out of doing something, it’s more than a cute expression:  it’s a fact.   According to a study published in BMJ, a British medical journal, getting too little sleep definitely has an impact on your physical appearance!  Researchers wrote that “sleep-deprived people appeared less healthy, less attractive and more tired compared with when they are well rested.  This suggests that humans are sensitive to sleep-related facial cues.”

Here are a few of my personal tips for getting great beauty sleep:

Invest in a Humidifier

Your skin needs moisture to look great and this can be a challenge especially if you live in a drier climate.  A good humidifier is the answer. 

I travel a lot for work and was finding that I never looked worse than after spending the night in a hotel room.  I’d wake up, look in the mirror and discover that my eyes were beet red and my skin was puffy and just tired looking.  But, since I started requesting a humidifier from housekeeping, those problems have disappeared.  Use a humidifier at night while you sleep. It will provide moisture to keep your skin soft, supple and younger looking!

Use a Good Pillowcase

Silk is the only way to go!  Silk contains natural proteins and amino acids that have wonderful anti-aging benefits.  And movie stars have sworn by this beauty secret or years! My interview with top New York Dermatologist and Author of the book SKIN RULES ~ Debra Jaliman, M.D.

During May I thought it would be nice to talk about different products that you might enjoy trying as we move into summer and the warmer weather. After reading SKIN RULES, I told Dr. Jaliman that this should be a mandatory book to keep on hand in every household as it truly addresses just about every question a person might have about skin related issues in such an easy to read and enjoyable presentation.

I was really curious about why Dr. Jaliman chose Dermatology as her profession and she told me that she had experienced “sensitive acne-prone skin” problems and challenges while growing up. As a result she decided she might as well get into the field of Dermatology.

As a very dedicated believer in skin care and really trying via my articles to stress the importance of caring properly for one’s skin and not just covering the face with cosmetics, I asked Dr. Jaliman about seasonal changes and adjustments in a person’s skin care routine. I found this very interesting. Dr. Jaliman told me that you should use different products appropriate for the season, but not to wait till the season starts! For instance, regarding summer, start transitioning to a lighter weight cleanser and moisturizer in spring so your skin adapts to the change and you won’t have problems when summer arrives. The same would be true for winter. As we head thru fall start to switch to a cleanser and moisturizer that will be appropriate for the cooler weather.

I then inquired about Dr.Jaliman’s skincare products, JALIMAN MD™com PRESCRIPTIONS FOR SKIN. She actually created them and you’ll find quite a variety to choose from on her website: www.drjaliman.com
As she mentioned earlier, Dr.Jaliman had experienced issues with her own sensitive acne- prone skin, and now has really put together a very nice choice of products for specific skin types. By going to “products” on the site, you can then go to “Skin Conditions” and see what would be appropriate for your type skin.

Make sure you read Dr. Jaliman’s “philosophy” section as well. You can see how she spent so much time and effort dedicating herself to creating solutions for the different skin types and needs, along with keeping the products up to date with the newest technology. There is also no testing done on animals!

So you see… You will be able to benefit from Dr. Jaliman’s expertise and care for your skin even if you do not reside in the New York area! There is also a phone number on the website that you can call if you have questions about products for your skin.
