Hollywood Glam Girl Patrika Darbo’s Exclusive IAGT Primetime Emmy Nomination Q & A

unnamed-1
It’s A Glam Thing’s longtime friend, Patrika Darbo is one of the most recognizable actresses on the small and large screens.  Everywhere she goes, fans know her from her various television appearances on such shows asIn The Big Bang Theory, Devious Maids, Dexter, Desperate Housewives and from her Emmy nominated role on Days of Our Lives. Film buffs know her from her stand-out performances in In The Line of Fire, Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil, Daddy’s Dyin’, (Who’s Got The Will?) and a host of other silver screen favorites.  Always reinventing herself as an actress, the veteran of over three decades worth of Tinsel Town trade is now nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her role on the internet series Acting Dead.

It’s A Glam Thing caught up with the talented red head in an exclusive Q & A!

IAGT: Congratulations on your Emmy nomination for Acting Dead.  Short Form is a brand new category for the Primetime Emmys.  Can you tell us a little bit about the category?

PATRIKA: Thank you.  This new category is for projects that are 15 minutes or less.  So if you have very little or no money, you can still create quality television.  The Short Form Category gives up and coming or established artists the opportunity to do great work and have a bigger audience.

IAGT: The title is curious.  Please tell us a little bit about the premise and story line for Acting Dead?

PATRIKA: Basically, if you look at a lot of television these days, it’s all about vampires, witches, zombies…the scary creatures in the supernatural genre.  Our show is about actors who actually become real zombies in order to get work in Hollywood!

IAGT: Your character, Margot Mullen is quite a “character”.  Tell us a little bit about her and are there any similarities between Margot and Patrika?

PATRIKA: Margot is a Travel/Talent agent who can get you on a show and get you a fabulous vacation all at the same time.  I think the similarities are that we both have big personalities and big hair!

IAGT: You are the only nominated actress in your category that is from an independent production.  Independent productions take a lot of blood, sweat and tears.  Please take the time to tell us a little bit about the other people who are behind this production.

PATRIKA: Yes, my nomination was the only nomination for an indie series, meaning no big network, website or production company was involved. It was created by and stars the fabulous Brian Beacock and Jillian Claire.  Brian produces it with Paul Nygro and Susan Bernhardt.  All the actors work deferred, which means we don’t get paid.  I am very fortunate to have been nominated, so this is my pay.  Hopefully, if I win, we will get enough notice to garner more producers with money to allow us to do more episodes.  The show is really fun and I think with a larger platform and a bit more financing we can get a much larger audience, all get paid, and entertain more people.

IAGT: You are no stranger to Emmy nominations.  You were nominated for a Daytime Emmy for your role as Nancy Wesley on the NBC daytime drama, Days of Our Lives.  Fans of this show miss you.  Do you think Nancy will ever return to Days?

PATRIKA: I am very blessed to have been nominated for a Daytime and now a Primetime Emmy.  These nominations come from your peers and I so appreciate their acknowledgement of my work.  I was invited back to Days and will start appearing in late November. It was like home and although there are some new faces, a lot of the fabulous actors I have worked with before are there for me to “play” with again.  Be sure to tune into NBC for a great storyline.

IAGT: While so many daytime actors seem to only work in the daytime genre, you continue to work in both primetime and feature films.  You recently worked on The Big Bang Theory, Devious Maids and The Middle.  Is there something about you or your technique that makes you more cast-able in acting arenas outside of daytime?

PATRIKA: I have had and am still having the opportunity to work in TV and film and I hope to be doing it for more years to come.  I am a character actress. I love what I do.  I think it is more difficult for a lot of daytime performers to do other genres because of the shooting schedules for daytime.  Don’t forget, on a soap you virtually shoot an entire script a day, 160 plus pages.  That’s a lot of words to memorize and time-wise doesn’t give an actor the opportunity to go audition for other projects.  Also, because daytime is so fast and everyday, getting a job that would take you away for a week or two is just not possible.  If time allowed, I’m sure you would see more of your favorite daytime performers in other venues.  In fact, some were in Acting Dead.

IAGT: Of all the big feature films that you have worked on, which film(s) was your favorite and why?

PATRIKA: My favorite film was Daddy’s Dyin’, (Who’s Got the Will?)  I originated the role on stage in a small 99 seat theater, got to go to the Fringe Festival to perform it in Edinburgh, Scotland and then reprised my role in the film starring opposite Beau Bridges.  I have to say that I get recognized the most to this day from the film InThe Line of Fire. There I got to work with John Malkovich and Clint Eastwood.  How lucky can one girl get?!

IAGT: If they call your name to go up and receive that Emmy award, what do you think you will say in your speech?

PATRIKA: It makes me nervous to think about it.  I am just so honored to be nominated and although I would love to win, I already feel like I have won.  If I do win I would thank my husband, Rolf who puts up with me on a regular basis, then the TV Academy and my peers who made it possible and then Brian and everyone involved with Acting Dead.  Truthfully, I’ll probably be blubbering and forget everyone and everything.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Skin Hydrated

striptwaxbar_3

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – (August 8, 2016) – Your skin is your largest organ, and many people start to pay attention to taking care of it only when a problem arises. Whether it’s acne, dry skin, blotches, or wrinkles, there are things that should be done regularly to take care of your skin, starting with making sure to keep it well hydrated. Keeping the skin hydrated will go a long way toward helping to have healthy-looking skin that glows and feels great.

“Skin needs to be well hydrated, and most people are just not doing enough to make sure that happens,” explains Katherine Goldman, celebrity esthetician/waxologist and owner of the Stript Wax Bar. “There are numerous things you can do to keep skin hydrated, so doing them regularly should be everyone’s mission.”

Hydration is important for having healthy, clear skin because dehydrated skin lacks water, making it appear dull and dry. While hydrated skin appears soft, it will not stay that way without having natural oils in balance to protect the skin and keep it hydrated by reducing evaporation and water loss. Here are 5 tips for keeping your skin hydrated:

  1. Drink water. Getting enough water is a good way to help with keeping skin hydrated from the inside out. Drink eight glasses of water per day so that your largest organ gets the fluids that it needs to stay soft and supple, and keep from being dry and rough.
  2. Moisturize properly. Dry skin lacks oil and needs to be moisturized.  Hydration can come externally through products that act as “humectants.”  Humectants are products that draw and attract water molecules to the skin. A wonderful ingredient to look for in products is hyaluronic acid.  This draws and attracts water molecules 1000 times its weight and infuses it into the skin. Moisturizing the skin typically comes in the form of a cream, serum, or lotion and adds needed moisture, vitamins, oils and nutrients to the skin.
  3. Add fruits and herbs. Foods can make a difference in the amount of moisture that gets into the skin. Add some fruits and herbs to your water for an added hydration boost, and a bit of flavor. Try such options as lemon and rosemary or strawberry, mint, and cucumber.
  4. Refresh the skin. One of the best ways to hydrate your skin topically is to use a product designed to hydrate. Typically these come in the form of a serum or a mist, such as the one carried by Stript Wax Bar, called the Dermaquest Essential B5 Hydrating Serum.  Another way to hydrate is to make a mask at home using the natural humectants honey, cucumber and aloe.  Combine 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 teaspoons of aloe vera gel.  Mix together and add a teaspoon of crushed cucumber and apply to the face for 10 minutes. Some affordable products to look for in the drugstore are alcohol-free rose petal infused witch hazel toner with aloe.  This is a great and inexpensive product to hydrate and refresh the skin. You can also look for rosewater and use as a spritz to hydrate.
  5. Make it a priority. All the tips in the world for having ageless skin that is healthy and hydrated won’t do you any good if you are not committed to making it happen. It’s important to make taking care of your skin a high priority and stick to what works to keep it hydrated, healthy, and looking great.

“Having skin that looks healthy and doesn’t age as fast is absolutely possible,” added Goldman. “You have to want to take care of it, making sure to especially keep it well hydrated. If your skin is well hydrated it will look and feel great. It’s a small effort that really pays off.”

CHILD’S PLAY

unnamed-39
Hollywood agent Nicole Pryor Dernersesian knows first-hand the promises and perils of putting your kid in from of a camera. The former child performer, Miss California finalist, and musical theater star (her credits including over 2600 performances of The Phantom of the Opera) is the founder of FireStarter Entertainment (FSE). Her younger clients include Teshi Thomas (Broadway’s The Lion King), Kennedy Slocum (Nickelodeon’s WITS Academy), and Blake Morgan Ferris (Showtime’s Masters of Sex). Here, Nicole weighs in on what she looks for when signing new child clients, how she feels about “stage parents,” and keeping a young actor grounded.

NN:  What do you look for (besides talent) when signing younger clients?

ND:  When I look for young talent, the most important thing I look for besides talent is the child’s passion for the art of acting.  There are a lot of talented kids in this world who are not interested in acting. I am looking for young talent who love acting and have the maturity level to withstand the rejection that comes along with it.  Without passion and maturity, the entertainment business will destroy that child and I will not be a part of that.  I will not, under any circumstances, represent a talented child who is not mature and does not show a passion for the art of acting.

NN:  How important is parental involvement when representing young clients?

ND:  Once I have established that a talented child is excited about pursuing a career in acting, I then have to make sure that the parent is truly committed to the process and willing and able to let me, the agent guide the ship. I have to make sure that the parent is completely prepared and on board for what they are signing up for.  The parent is the one driving to auditions, managing the audition schedule and preparing the child for auditions. When the child books a job, the parent has to be on set with the child for the duration of the shoot (days, months or even years). It can be a full-time job and a parent must be willing to commit a big portion of their time and energy to their child’s career. This commitment is not for everyone.

NN:  What role should a parent play in their child’s career?

ND:  The parent’s role is to support their child’s dream of becoming an actor.  Parental involvement takes a wrong turn when the parent wants it more than the child. Some would call these type of parents: “Stage Parents” or “Stage Moms.” A stage parent is a parent who is willing do anything to gain fame, money or prestige through the talent of their child. I have seen parents push their children into an acting career when that child does not want to be a part of it. This can destroy a child.  I want parents to be guided by their child’s passion toward this career, not vice versa. A child has the right to be a child, without the interruption of auditions and the rejection that comes with it.  I love it when a parent comes to me and says: “I don’t know much about the entertainment business, but I think my child is very talented and they won’t stop bugging me about acting. I am here to support my child.”  When I hear this, I know that the child is running the show.  This type of parental support leads to the most successful child acting careers.  One story that I would love to share is about my first client, Teshi Thomas. When I met Teshi, I knew that she was not only talented, but she was passionate about performing. She was also mature beyond her years. Her mother, Evonne came to me with very little knowledge of the entertainment business but wanted to support her child’s dream. She was (and continues to be) open and willing to let me, the talent agent, guide them through the process.  Within a year of us working together, Teshi booked the role of Young Nala in The Lion King on Broadway in New York.  The job of a talent agent is to get work for the child actor. The role parents is to support the best interests of their child, whether it means to pursue acting or step out of the world of entertainment altogether. When it comes to the pursuit of a career in acting, the child’s passion should be the primary guiding force.

NN:  How can you keep your kids from getting too spoiled in Hollywood – especially as they start having success?

ND: I think the best thing you can do for a child actor, is to continue to treat them like a child. If your child was required to do chores before they started acting, they should be required to do chores after they started acting.  Being a child actor requires a high level of discipline and maturity. It is important that once that child comes home, that they can be a child again and receive the same level of responsibility, love, and normality that they received before stepping into the adult world of entertainment.  I believe that this high level of parental support will help keep that child actor grounded.

NN: Do you have to live in Hollywood or New York to launch a career? Why or Why not?

ND: Your proximity to Hollywood or New York is vital to your success in the entertainment business. Most auditions are located in Hollywood or New York. If you are not located in either city, you must be willing to travel in order to attend auditions, many of which are scheduled last minute. And as we all know, the price of travel is expensive, especially when booked last minute for two people (the child actor and the parent). Even if the parent is willing to pay for the cost of travel, sometimes it is impossible for travel to be arranged. For example: sometimes we get same day audition appointments. If the child actor and parent are located in Texas and I need them to be in Los Angeles for an appointment scheduled in one hour, it is physically impossible for the child actor and parent to make it to out to Los Angeles in time. For this reason, I rarely take on clients who are not physically located in Hollywood or New York. If you are committed to a career in acting, you must be located where the jobs are.

NN: How has the business changed for kids since you started your own career?

ND: I would have to say that the internet and social media have changed the entire entertainment business. Child actors are particularly affected by this change because they are still developing, both mentally and physically. And once that child actor becomes successful, any physical change, growing pain or mistake will now be captured in real time and broadcast for the entire world to see and weigh in on with their unfiltered opinions. This type of visibility and transparency can really affect a child’s self-esteem and mental growth and stability. This is why it is so imperative that once a child steps out of the world of “Hollywood” and back into their family home, that the parent does their best to create and provide a safe environment of normalcy for that child.  The parent is instrumental in making sure that the child actor’s developmental years are not permanently disrupted and destroyed by the sometimes brutal entertainment business and all of the unfiltered noise surrounding it. www.FireStarterEntertainment.com

Wonder Water: 6 Unexpected Infused Waters for Gorgeous Skin!

unnamed-3

From the Pros:

While most dermatologists and doctors preach the benefits of drinking more water, water gets boring. Perhaps you’ve done just about everything to make your plain glass of water more enjoyable. If you’re running out of ideas and are tempted to reach for a caffeinated beverage you’re not alone. We talked to the experts who gave us six fresh infused water recipes that’ll pack a punch of flavor and add health and beauty benefits to your H2O! If you’re new to infused water it’s easy. Chop up the ingredients, let them sit over night in your water pitcher and sip your way to healthy hydration inside and out.

  1. Mango Ginger

This combo might seem weird, but adding the health benefits of ginger and the antioxidant power of mangoes is a surprisingly tasty mix! “Mangoes contain so many vitamins that help boost your immune system. It has antioxidants that maintain youthful glowing skin and aid in the production of blood cells,” says Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. an anti-aging expert and long-time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team.  “Ginger is also helpful in fighting infection, has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, may reduce muscle aches, and helps digestion,” adds Dr. Calapai.

  1. Grapefruit Rosemary

Recently rosemary was found to be the main ingredient eaten by residents of an Italian village with one of the highest populations of people who live past 100! “Rosemary improves circulation and sends more blood to the brain which is linked to greater concentration and potentially reduces risk of Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Calapai. Grapefruit is not only delicious but it’s a natural fat burner, boosts metabolism and cleanses your liver.

  1. Melon Mix

Cut up watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe chunks and throw into your water over night. “This melon variety tastes great and is amazing for your skin,” says Dr. Kally Papantoniou board certified dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. “Melons are immensely hydrating, meaning more hydration per cup of water. They are also chock-full of antioxidants that keep skin clear plus they contain vitamins that promote collagen production which helps skin cell turnover.”

  1. Citrus MintPick your favorite citrus fruits, cut up into slices and add some crushed mint.  “Adding mint to your water is not only extra refreshing but also improves digestive health and can speed up your metabolism,” says Dr. Calapai. “Mint actually contains salicylic acid, a potent acne fighter,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “It’s also well known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties which work to calm irritation both on your skin or internally,” she adds.
  2. Cucumber Lavender

“The reason so many spas use cucumber based treatments is because it contains many skin friendly minerals like magnesium, potassium and silicon,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “This mix is especially healthy,” says Dr. Calapai “Cucumbers are powerful detoxifiers, flushing out any waste in your system. Adding crushed lavender to the mix not only adds a beautiful aroma but can also help digestion as lavender contains polyphenols that reduce bad bacteria in your gut, making your system run smoother,” he explains.

  1. Pineapple Coconut Water
This one is almost cheating… almost. Get your favorite store bought raw coconut water and refrigerate over night with large chunks of pineapple. The coconut-pineapple flavor combo is delicious and reminiscent of a piña colada without all the sugar and calories. Although this is not pure H2O, coconut water contains electrolytes which plain water does not, which rehydrate you in record time. “Pineapple is yet another fruit that aids in collagen production,” says Papantoniou “This is not just great for beautiful skin, collagen also has a major role in bone health and tissue repair.”

Clearly there are benefits to keeping hydrated. Water does not have to be boring, it can be delicious. Drink up!

“Celebrity Home Decor” On A Budget

Have you ever dreamed of having your home decorated like a celebrity? I can help! Today on Arizona Midday, I shared some of my favorite ideas and budget friendly products to help you achieve a celebrity designer look for your home without breaking the bank! Enjoy.

arizona_midday_1

1. Wall Pops Nuwallpaper- Celebrities like Khloe Kardashian have been known to use expensive designer wallpaper as an artistic accent in a room in their home. Designer wallpaper prices start at around $300 a roll and go up from there which means it can cost thousands of dollars to add wallpaper to just one wall in your home. I love Wall Pops Nuwallpaper because they provide a great way to get a celebrity look for less with their removable wallpaper in an array of eye-catching designs and patterns. Now, you don’t have to pay a fortune to achieve a great look that’s right on trend! Wall Pops Nuwallpaper is removable so if you get tired of the look in a year or two and want a change all you have to do is peel it off and replace it with a new Wall Pop Nuwallpaper design. It’s that simple! They’ve got you covered with patterns and colors to suit everyone’s style and something for every room of your home from the babies nursery, to your living, dining, bedroom and bath and more! The best part is the price of $49.99 a roll. Now we can all afford to decorate our walls just like a celebrity!

2. Downlite- Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez spare no expense when it comes to Hotel style down bedding for their stylish homes. If you’ve ever experienced a luxury hotel and the luxurious comfort and feel of the bedding then you understand why it’s well sought after by the rich and famous to incorporate into their own homes. I love Downlite because their affordable prices allow you to get the
look and feel of celebrity high-end luxury hotel bedding in your home without breaking the bank. Downlite has been manufacturing down and feather bedding, pillows and sateen sheet sets for over thirty years. The quality, look, hand of the fabrics and prices are  amazing! Prices start at $20 and up.
Coupon Code for viewers = SOC0011, 20% Off your purchase
Offer expires 8/31/16
Chyron: www.downlite.com
3. White Sheepskin Rugs-White sheepskin rugs and animal skins have always been a chic celebrity look but as an animal lover I can’t bear to use the real thing or to pay the high price tag that they carry! The technology of fabrics and rugs has come a long way as scientists and manufacturers have learned how to assimilate designer looks using synthetic fibers. Now you can find alternative
sheepskin rugs that give you the same celebrity luxurious feel and look without the high price tag at stores such as Home Goods,Target, Amazon.com and more! Prices start at $19.99
4. Accent Lamps and Shades-The three G’s Gold, Glitz and Glam are hallmark traits of every celebrity home that you will find in accent lamps, to upholstered furniture and accessories. Celebrities have the bank account to afford expensive designer looks but let’s face it not all of us can afford to purchase designer accessories for our home. I love JCPenney because they have great designer looks for every room in your home without the high price tag attached. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create the same celebrity designer looks and ambience in your home. Bring the three G’s into any room in your home with a lamp or lampshade to create a fabulous focal point at a fraction of the price that celebrities spend. I love this chic celebrity Gold lamp and chevron design lampshade look that I found at JcPenney for under $200. It’s Gold, it’s Glitzy and it’s oh so Glam!
Chyron: www.jcpenney.com
5. Monogram Status-What’s not to like about the look of a nice monogram towel, robe or sheet set? Celebrities love to take this age old custom designer look and apply it to their own homes. I think they like to see their name in lights as much as they like to see their initials on white towels or linens. While it’s true that Mongram items such as towels, sheets or accent pillows have always been a luxury and a sign of status in society for the rich and famous it’s also true that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to achieve this status quo for yourself. Since Mongram items are usually custom made it can cost a pretty penny to purchase them for your own home. I have great news! You can find an array of monogram towel sets, accent pillows and more for a fraction of the cost online and at stores such as Target and Amazon.com. Now you can also dress up your home just like a rock star and have money to spare for your next big soriee!

arizona_midday_2DIY on the FLY- Here’s a little celebrity design tip secret-Shhhh…Celebrities often pay their designer thousand’s of dollars to stage their library with beautiful books. What most people don’t know is that their designer has created the look by covering their books with beautiful gift wrap or handmade paper. It’s so simple anyone can do it and it’s a great way to put old wrapping or wallpaper to good use while creating a celebrity look for your own book shelves.

S-T-O-P and clear your mind

IMG_20150929_141115

When you were you a little kid, have you ever gotten lost in the store or park and your parents would find you all in a panic, crying, shaking and totally out of control? Do you remember the words they would say to you, as they wipe away the tears from your face? Well, mine would say, just stop. When you are lost just stop and be still you would be found. That advice still fits into our lives now. When we are lost, confused, stuck or even afraid in our life we should just STOP. Let me spell it out for you.

S – Stay. Just stay still. Sit for a moment, don’t use outside distractions to ignore your frustrations. They will not go away; they will seep back into your thoughts late at night when you are trying to sleep. Turn off all the distractions, as a matter of fact, lock yourself away. Well, find your quite spot. I personally turn off my phone, turn off my computer and just sit. I have a tablet and a pen next to me so that I can jot down any thoughts that pop into my head.

T – Think. While you are sitting quietly just think. Write down the things that pop into your mind. Don’t over think, it can be written any way you like it. Scribble, draw or doodle it doesn’t need to be in any type of order.

O – Observe. Take a look at what you have written, see if there is a pattern to your thoughts or see if they are just all over the place. Either way it’s fine!

P – Plan. Take those thoughts and string them together to come up with a plan. Focus on the thoughts that are constantly popping out at you on the page. Find a theme to your thoughts.

Tackle the noise inside of your head. When you are feeling lost, confused or afraid just S-T-O-P. You will find that once you have taken those steps you will feel more in control, confident and have a clearer picture of where you are and where you want to be. Wipe away those tears and take control of your destiny!
