Vitamin C: Not Just for Fighting Off Colds

At the first sign of a cold, a lot of us might think to reach for a big bottle of Vitamin C.  But did you know that the benefits of Vitamin C go way beyond keeping away the sniffles?

Lumene makes a whole line of great skin care products infused with Vitamin C, which as it turns out, also assists with the formation of collagen and protects the skin.  Created from natural Artic ingredients, Lumene products are reasonably priced and perfect for anyone who wants a holistic approach to  beauty.

A new favorite of mine is their Dry Skin Comfort Radiance Cocktail, which I use twice a day after cleansing and before my moisturizer.  It really helps out here in southern California where there’s not a lot of natural humidity to help skin stay supple. And, as a bonus, it smells really great!  www.lumene.com

Getting Lippy With It

In cosmetology school my favorite thing to do besides color and facials was makeup applications. I loved the fact of teaching woman how to properly apply their “face” and how to make them feel better.  One question I was always asked was “What color should they wear on their  lips and should it be lip gloss or lipstick”?  I always aimed for the lip gloss because it gives a nice pop pf color with that added shine.

Now, outside of school I get to try other makeup products and experiment with many lip glosses.  Since then I have tried and found a lip gloss that stays on and is not goopy or stingy on color.  I use Butter London’s Lippy Lip gloss and their Nail Lacquer.

Nails are another thing I enjoy doing.  It took many tries to find a nail polish that goes on and stays on.  I tried Butter London’s Nail Lacquer on my mom who is always in the dirt planting and digging up weeds. Through all that it stays on her nails longer than I thought it would. I did her nails in the middle of April and they are just now starting to wear off in the first week of May. That is a great endurance for the amount of abuse she puts her nails through.

So next time you need a little “British Invasion” try Lippy’s lip gloss and Nail Lacquer by Butter London and experience it for yourself.

My Interview with Olympic Gold Medalist and Spokesperson for the “Rethink Varicose Veins Campaign” ~ Summer Sanders!

You can imagine my enthusiasm when asked if I’d like to interview the phenomenal Olympic Gold Medal swimmer, now commentator,TV Show Host, and Mother of two, Summer Sanders.

Summer Sanders

I was quite intrigued about Summer being the spokesperson for “Rethink Varicose Veins“. Summer mentioned that she had been experiencing aching, and heaviness in her legs. She thought that it might be a result from being very active, on her feet a lot with her children, a busy career, and possibly getting older, but discovered after visiting a vein specialist that it actually was “Venous Insufficiency” which is what causes Varicose Veins. She was told that if not treated it could get worse and become CVI or Chronic Venous Insufficiency where symptoms could become more serious.

I asked Summer if there were any Varicose Vein problems in her family and she told me that her Mom got them after pregnancy. Summer did have her Venous Insufficiency treated, and told me not only was it resolved, but she was able to walk out on her own after the treatment. That was pretty amazing to me, and I was so happy for Summer being able to overcome this Vein problem and now help share the information with others as Spokesperson for Rethink Varicose Veins.

With the upcoming 2012 Olympics in London, I needed to find out if Summer would be covering them, and indeed she will be doing webcasts for Yahoo Sports.

I asked her if she felt that same thrill as an Olympic commentator as she did when she was an Olympic participant. She said that she got out of the competition at the right time and is still closely involved with her commentary work on TV that keeps her close to the competition and the “ adrenaline rush of the excitement.”

Curious about what sparked Summer’s passion for swimming she said that she has a Brother who is 4 years older, and when they were younger and living in California with such wonderful warm weather, they would spend lots of time swimming in their pool at home.

Wrapping up our interview I wondered if Summer and her husband, Erik (a former Olympian Skier), were noticing any inclination toward sports with their two children. Summer said that the children do enjoy sports and right now they were just letting them try and participate in various sport activities and see what happens.

Talking with Summer was so enjoyable. I wished her all the best as spokesperson for Rethink Varicose Veins, and lots of fun covering the 2012 Olympics in London.

I still had a few more things I wanted to learn about Varicose Veins and was very happy that I was able to speak with the delightful and extremely informative Dr. Mark A. Adelman who was also available to be interviewed.

(Quotes from Dr. Adelman’s Biography) Dr. Mark A. Adelman is an Associate Professor of Surgery at New York University Medical Center. As Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, he is well known nationally and internationally for his academic accomplishments. He has served as a President of the New York Society for Vascular Surgery as well as President of the Association of International Vascular Surgeons. Dr. Adelman has published more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and is well recognized by the media for his contributions in venous disease.  Dr. Adelman has been an innovator in the endovascular treatment of venous disease and aortic disease. He has been an investigator in more than 25 clinical trials, and holds three U.S. and international patents for surgical instrumentation. His clinical interests include venous pathology, endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysm, and carotid artery disease.

Dr. Mark A. Adelman

I asked Dr. Adelman when Varicose Veins usually occur and which gender is more prone to get them. He said usually they occur between the ages of 35-55 and at a 3 to 1 ratio of women to men. He also noted that there is most often a pre-disposition to Varicose Veins in the family.

He mentioned that things are different now than they were years ago and a patient with Varicose Veins does not have to suffer with pain as they did in the past. In the older days it was a more intense procedure. Now a days with Laser type procedures they are much better and can be done locally.

More good news! Where as in the past insurance generally didn’t cover this procedure, now,in most cases, the procedure is covered by insurance, and you’ll most likely be able to walk out after your treatment like Summer did!

Dr. Adelman shared so much positive and encouraging information regarding Varicose Veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency and it’s so nice to know that there is new technology that is able to help. I was so glad to have had an opportunity to speak with him. Ongoing success Dr. Adelman and thank you!

I believe now we need to be proactive and personally educate ourselves about Varicose Veins, and Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) and see if it may be something that might be helpful for possible problems that we may be dealing with. This is probably the perfect time to refer you to the RETHINK VARICOSE VEINS WEBSITE where you will not only receive more information about Varicose Veins, treatment options, read about Summer’s experience, and be able to take a self assessment and screening to find out if you should see a doctor. There is also a locator, to find a doctor in your area! Please take a moment to visit:
www.rethinkvaricoseveins.com

Now is the time!!Don’t delay! We are all so active these days, that there is no reason to suffer with the discomfort of Varicose Veins, and Chronic Venous Insufficiency anymore.

Addicted to Tanning……The Sobering Facts

Watching the news today, I was in disbelief seeing the woman from New Jersey who allegedly brought her 6 year old to a tanning salon. It brought home a conversation I had last week with Marina Peredo, M.D., F.A.A.D, a nationally recognized board certified dermatologist with over 20 years of experience, about the dangers of tanning.

Has tanning always been fashionable? It is thought that tanning became popular in the 1920’s, by none other than Coco Chanel. Prior to the 1920’s, tans were thought of as fairly déclassé, exclusively reserved for those who worked the land.  When Chanel stepped off a friend’s yacht in Cannes, sunburned after the hot summer of 1923, she made “made suntans the height of fashion in the 1920s, as a key component of Riviera chic,” says Justine Picardie, author of a new Chanel biography. “In doing so, she turned fashion on its head, so that bronzed skin became emblematic of glamour rather than peasantry; of a leisured life rather than outdoor labour.” By the end of the decade, the poor had left the fields for factories, and, helped along by Chanel, the trend for brown skin began.

Tanned skin became a trend partly because of Coco’s status and the longing for her lifestyle by other members of society. Her fans apparently liked the look and started to adopt darker skin tones themselves.  In addition, Parisians fell in love with Josephine Baker, a “caramel-skinned” singer in Paris. Those who liked and idolized her coveted her dark skin as well. These two French women were leading figures of the transformation tanned skin underwent, in which it became perceived as fashionable, healthy, and luxurious.

Fashionable but at what cost? Dr. Peredo, who received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, completed her internal medicine internship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and her dermatology residency at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College and is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York (which she was awarded teacher of the year in 2011), has spent her life’s work successfully treating patients with skin-related conditions. In addition, she founded Marina I. Peredo, M.D., P.C. Dermatology and Spatique Medical Spa in Smithtown, NY where she skillfully provides medical, surgical, cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic services to her patients, in a luxurious state-of-the-art environment. Acting as Director, she heads an accomplished team of dermatologists, a mohs surgeon, plastic surgeon and nutritionist along with registered nurses, estheticians, massage therapists and makeup artists that cater to every cosmetic need and beauty indulgence. (http://spatiquemedicalspa.com)

She filled me in on the staggering statistics…

Unfortunately, there is really no such thing as “safe tanning.” 1 in 5 people with develops skin cancer at some point in their life and 1 in 55 will be melanoma.

  • Skin cancer is the most common  form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.
  • Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
  • Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either skin cancer at least once.
  • About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
  • People who use tanning beds are 2.5  times more likely to develop skin cancer.
  • There has been a dramatic  increase in skin cancer in young women, up 800% because of tanning sessions.

Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate…..it can affect all ages, all races, all religions, and all social classes. Dr. Peredo suggests getting to know your moles really well. If a mole changes in shape, size, color, gets itchy….see a doctor. For anyone with a history of skin cancer, having a familiar history will increase your risk by 12%.

Education is the key…………..Dr. Peredo believes education is the best way to combat skin cancer and sun damage. She practices what she preaches! Dr. Peredo is recognized by the media as a guest on national new shows, including The View, Good Morning America, Fox News, Telemundo and the British Broadcasting Company. Her editorial credits include such publications as New Beauty Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Seventeen, Prevention and The New York Post. She publishes in peer-reviewed journals and lectures regularly at medical symposia, both nationally and internationally. She is a key participant in the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Skin Cancer Foundation, where she provides complimentary skin cancer screenings, Long Island Dermatology Society, Women’s Dermatologic Society and New York State Society of Dermatology. She conducts numerous clinical studies, is a national trainer, speaker and educator for prestigious dermatologic companies such as Medicis, Allergan, Abbot and DUSA and has also done pro-bono work for Beyond Our Borders.

Ask anyone what their favorite asset of summer is, and they’ll undoubtedly cite it is the warm, sunny weather. But, there is a downside to an enviable outdoors lifestyle and protect your skin at all cost. And if the skin cancer statistics aren’t enough for you, remember that your skin is your best accessory. And flawless skin is always in demand!

A Great Idea for Mother’s Day From Miracle Skin Transformer !

Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to interview the innovator of Miracle Skin Transformer, Sarah McNamara.

Miracle Skin Transformer is a great multi-tasking Line of products that not only can be used as wonderful treatments for the skin but cosmetically as well!

I just received this Miracle Skin Transformer Mother’s Day promotion that I believe any Mom would truly appreciate, and wanted to share it with you.

One of the questions I asked Sarah McNamara in our interview was:
“How did your conception and development of a treatment and cosmetic line come about?”

Sarah’s reply was :“As a busy mother of two, I didn’t want or have time to apply tons of lotions, gels and creams before even applying my makeup. I knew there had to be a better, easier way to deliver short cuts to beautiful, flawless skin. I noticed a gap in the market which is why I formulated Miracle Skin Transformer to moisturize, prime, even skin tone , mattify like a powder and protect with sunscreen all in one easy application.”

I believe a lot of Mom’s would agree with Sarah, and really enjoy receiving some time saving Miracle Skin Transformer products on Mother’s day 🙂
