True Beauty

We all know that there are all kinds of beauty. Some are blessed with physical beauty, others with a beautiful mind, and still others with a beautiful spirit. Author, educator, actress, producer and poet Maya Angelou possessed all of these. She lived a long and full life, yet many of us who admire her and her work are saddened at her passing yesterday at the age of 86.

I especially love her poetry. Her rich and powerful words resonate with so many of us, regardless of any perceived cultural, religious or economic differences. Phenomenal Woman, one of her most well-known works, is one of my favorites because in it she reminds us that all women are beautiful:

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.

Protect Your Skin From Sun Damage

May is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.

From a beauty perspective, constant and unprotected sun exposure causes skin damage, aging, pigmentation, wrinkles, sagging, and leathering.  Most of us know the general protective procedures to help prevent skin melanomas.

These procedures would include:

  • Not to burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
    • To cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
    • Use a high quality broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15                    or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
    • Apply of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
    • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
    • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

Here are some of Dr Gaynor’s tips on fighting Melanoma.

  • Drinking 3 cups of green or black tea every day leads to a decrease in skin cancer.
  • Eating more leafy green vegetables; kale, tomatoes, carrots
    • Take a baby aspirin every day; cuts down inflammation.
  • Turmeric, gives curry it’s yellow color, inhibits melanoma
    • Blueberries (pterostilbene) & black raspberries are inhibitory against melanoma
  • Magnolia Extract contains Manganol and Honokiol, which inhibit the formation and spread of melanoma.

Beauty expert and celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley’s perfect “at-home” recipe for summer ready feet !

Summer is right around the corner, the weather is warming up, and all those wonderful sandals are waiting in your closet to be worn! I don’t know about you, but I panic when I take a look at my feet! Glam Gals….It’s time to whip our “winter feet”, into summer ready shape!

Thank goodness beauty expert and celebrity manicurist and pedicurist Skyy Hadley has the perfect at-home recipe to give your feet a relaxing experience while soothing and exfoliating the skin for super soft results!

Skyy Hadley’s Recipe for a Light Cucumber Shell Mask:

• Start with 2 whole cucumbers (one per foot), 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of olive oil; mix in a blender until pureed.

• Pour the mixture into a bowl and heat it up to warm. Place half of the mixture into a large Ziploc baggie, and half in a second baggie.
• Slide feet right into each baggie, rubbing cucumber mask until each foot is fully soaked.
• Leave on for 5-10 minutes then rinse with warm water.
• The cucumber is extra refreshing and reviving for tired toes, the lemon helps exfoliate and the olive oil deeply moisturizes for super softness.

Mission accomplished! Thanks Skyy, for this great revitalizer for our feet !!

Now all “you” need to do is polish your toes with your favorite summer polish, confidently slip into your comfy summer sandals, and “summer here we come”!
