Face Paint for a Healthier Halloween!

Halloween is quickly approaching, and it’s time to nail your family’s costumes down. In order to make sure you stay healthy while participating in the fun, Sophia Ruan Gushee, author of A-to-Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide To Reducing Our Toxic Exposures, has created the ultimate recipe for nontoxic DIY face paint that the whole family can have fun making together!

There are many dangerous toxicants found in conventional paints, including lead, nickel, cobalt, and chromium. This recipe is quick, easy, and a great alternative to the common varieties out there:

Ingredients
· 1 ½ tbsp cornstarch

· ¼ tbsp all purpose flour

· 2 tbsp honey

· ½ tbsp water

· Natural food color (seek nontoxic products on Amazon, or use household foot items that can act as natural dyes)
· Mix the cornstarch and flour in a bowl. Add the honey and water to your mixture. It should create a thick, gluey substance that resembles a paste. If the paint is too thin, add more cornstarch and flour. If too thick, add extra water.

Divide the mixture into separate bowls, and add your coloring. For example, you can use turmeric for yellow, and paprika for red.

·         The paint comes out a bit more thick and gooey than conventional face paints, but the colors come out beautifully and stay on for hours.

·         While the paint dries well, the honey component makes the paint slightly sticky to the touch. Avoid touching the paint after it is applied.

3 Tips from Sophia ruan gushe’ on to boost our Planet’s health this Earth Day

1. Learn more about proper recycling practices.

· For instance, did you know that lightbulbs, ceramics, pyrex, and broken glass cannot be recycled at home? That pizza boxes can only be recycled when the spots with grease residue have been discarded? Or that it’s perfectly fine to add glossy paper, like junk mail and magazines, to your paper recycling bin?

2. Support the planet’s health by eating more plant based meals. Experts say that switching to a vegetarian diet will reduce your carbon footprint more than abandoning your car would!

· If you’re thinking – didn’t I recently read that lettuce is worse for the environment than bacon? – Rest assured that when you compare lettuce and bacon pound per pound, and not by calorie, a pound of bacon has six times the carbon footprint than a pound of lettuce, according to the Environmental Working Group.

3. Focus on reducing toxic exposures

· Industrial chemicals, used to make our consumer product, have been found all over the world – in humans, in wildlife, and in the most pristine corners of the world, and have been linked to a slew of adverse health effects in humans and animals. D-toxing your products will help reduce the demand for harmful chemical ingredients, which will promote the health of our planet.
