PLASTIC SURGEON UNVEILS BEAUTY HACKS THAT COST LESS THAN A STARBUCKS COFFEE

Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Manish Shah, Denver board -certified, shares these secrets with us.

Dr. Manish Shah beauty hacks

We all know that cosmetic-plastic surgeons and dermatologists earn their living by operating or non- invasive procedures. Most of these endeavors are costly for patients.  It’s rare that any aesthetic surgeon will let us in on things we can do daily that don’t require us to visit them!  We are fortunate to have Dr. Manish Shah, a  share secrets with us, that in many cases cost nothing or less than a gourmet cup of coffee.

 MANISH SHAH’S TOP BEAUTY HACKS

  1. Cleaning your phone screens – Dr. Shah offers that, “A great way to avoid blemishes is to routinely clean the makeup and bacteria off of your phone screens. It is easy to spread harmful skin bacteria from the surface of your phone. Washing your hands goes a long way to avoid skin contamination as well.”

  1. Make your own exfoliating scrub at home– Dr. Shah shares that, “A woman I consider my second mother taught me how to create my own organic exfoliating scrub. She would dry peeled skins of oranges, lemons, and limes in the sun. She would then finely grate the white inside rind of the peel and then mix it with any facial cleanser or even add it to fine facial oils. Using the scrub would exfoliate the skin, treat it with Vitamin C, and prevent over-drying of the skin because of the fruit oils.”

  1. I recommend treating the enlarged pores of the T-zone with over the counter hydrogen peroxide. The bacteria in the pores create  inflammation that increases pore size, and this leads to blackheads and whiteheads. Dr. Shah explains that, “These bacteria can’t survive in high oxygen environments. 3% hydrogen peroxide is available over the counter quite inexpensively. Treating only the T-zone at night kills the bacteria, reduces pore size and  blemishes. Because it can be quite drying, takes breaks from its use every now and then.”

  1. Avoid fake nails. They harbor tons of bacteria that are easily transferred to the face when you touch your face. Instead, focus on growing your own nails with the help of oral vitamin C and any good quality hair, skin, and nails vitamin like Nature’s Bounty Extra Strength Hair, Skin, and Nails.

  1. For teens, especially, it is so important to wash their pillow cases routinely. Dr. Shah is the father ofthree teens. From his first-hand knowledge he says that, “Teens aren’t very compliant when it comes to skincare and they suffer from hormones in a bad way. This 1-2 punch makes acne and blemishes the bane of most teens’ existences. Going to sleep at night on clean pillow cases after washing your face goes a long way to reducing bacterial burden and allows blemishes to heal.”

  1. If you suffer from puffiness around the eyes, a quick trick is to use black tea bags.Wet them in ice water and lay them onto the eyes to soothe. The caffeine in the black tea causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing edema or swelling in the delicate, thin eyelid tissues.

  1. Add baking soda to your toothpaste to easily polish away stains to keep your teeth white.Instead of bleaching your teeth, baking soda actually breaks the molecules that stain the teeth. It is less irritating to your gums as well, and way cheaper than teeth whitening strips.

  1. Eat the rainbow– A white bread-based diet does not for clear skin make. That’s why Dr. Shah makes sure his diet is packed with brightly-colored fruits and vegetables.  He says, “Fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants which give glow to the skin.” Specifically, research suggests that pigments called carotenoids—found in foods like carrots, spinach and other leafy greens, and tomatoes have been linked to good complexions.” Adding fish oil to your diet also improves skin compliance and radiance.

  1. Avoid Hot Showers- Disappointing as it may beDr. Shah says, “Hot showers remove too much of your natural oils and brings blood circulation to your skin, creating inflammatory reactions that result in rashes and aggravate those with eczema or dry patches.”

  1. You may just need a brow wax instead of a lift

“I had a patient who wanted a brow lift because she thought she looked angry all the time. I sent her for a brow wax instead. It took 15 minutes, she looked great, and she saved herself thousands.” Other brow techniques like brow tinting can change how your eyebrows frame the eyes, improving on your looks.

Plastic Surgeon Gets Real on the Secrets Most Keep Under Wraps

chin implant

Plastic surgeons on TV Shows like”Botched” and the old favorite “NipTuck”, are seen as the perfect specimen of looks, wealth and a fabulously crafted and curated lifestyle. They’re impeccably dressed, have gregarious personalities and their significant others are the epitome of perfection. Is there more to the story? Are there practice secrets that are kept more confidential than the facelift of a 50-year-old socialite? Dr. Stanley Poulos, a San Francisco Bay area board certified plastic surgeon gets real on secrets many   plastic surgeons prefer to keep under wraps.

1)Sometimes you will have more than just “a little discomfort” managed with some light dosage of pain medication.

Everyone has a different pain threshold and post op bruising and swelling vary so certain procedures will take longer to recover from. Abdominoplasty, body lifts, and combination surgeries like “mommy makeover” are just a few examples of procedures where recovery may be extended.

Many people who have had procedures can think of a time a few days post op where they wanted to curse their surgeon or ask “why in the world did I do this?”

Just because it’s an elective aesthetic surgery doesn’t make it any less of an operation. Dr. Poulos explains that there are two very important things you want to get clear on, the actual level of pain and recovery time. Recovery time to return to ranching or running marathons may be a lot different than being able to drive or get out.  He advises speaking to a few friends or references who had the same procedure. Just remember that like childbirth as time goes by the experience may  seem easier than it was.

“You need to know so you can make necessary arrangements with work and childcare or elder care if need be. Some procedures can take at least a week or two before resuming normal activity so the more realistic the expectations the better,” adds Poulos.

2) There may be more than just “minimal scarring.”

“Scarring has nothing to do with the surgeon’s skill and everything to do with the patient’s genetics,” clarifies Dr. Poulos. He goes on to explain that a highly skilled plastic surgeon can do the same exact procedure with closure on two different people. One will have minimal scarring while the other will not.” People with darker complexions should consider this before deciding to do a procedure and certainly consult with your doctor’s team who can recommend remedies that help with scarring.

3) Cellulite removal isn’t just easily “zapped away” with a laser.

Today there are many options available, each claiming to treat cellulite effectively. Some are a bit more invasive. Cellulaze for example is a highly promoted actual surgical procedure using an invasive laser that must be threaded under the skin. “Even though this is considered minimally invasive, it’s not an easy zap. Even with improvement the results often will not meet expectations so be realistic.

4) There’s an expiration date on results due to the aging process.

We see celebrities who desperately battle mother nature. Aging is inevitable. The average “shelf life” of a facelift is about 10 years. “A facelift is a large financial investment along with significant recovery time. The better the skin elasticity the closer to a decade you’ll get. Odds are even better you’ll have a more enduring result if you don’t smoke or sun-worship,” says Dr. Poulos. He goes on to say that he believes it’s really important to lay out the real expectations given skin texture and volume. Some people may notice the lower quadrant of their faces aging just a few years post facelift. While a person will still look youthful post facelift, it’s not going to prevent aging.”

A Nose Above the Rest: Plastic Surgeon Picks Top 5 Celebrity Noses

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the nose is the front door. Right at the center of the face, it is one of the make or break features. We got extra nosy (pun intended!) and asked top board certified plastic surgeon and Amazon best-selling author Dr. John Zannis for his top five celebrity noses. Whether you love your natural nose or are looking for inspiration before going under the knife, here are five ladies who are a nose above the rest!unnamed-14J.Lo

“My rhinoplasty patients constantly point to Jennifer Lopez as an example of their dream nose,” says Dr. John Zannis “Her nose is not terribly narrow, her tip is even, and the shape and size of her nose are perfectly proportionate to the rest of her prominent features.”

Ashley Olsen

“Ashley Olsen is the poster child for heart-shaped faces,” says Dr. Zannis “Her face is wider and her chin is slightly pointed, having a straight even nose puts the focus on her big beautiful eyes which is arguably her most striking feature.”

unnamed-16

Rihanna

“Rihanna has one of the most perfectly symmetrical faces in Hollywood,” says Zannis “The bridge of her nose is incredibly straight and her nostrils are wide, balancing the length and narrowness of her face by making it appear wider.”

unnamed-17

Jessica Alba

“Jessica Alba’s nose is the perfect size for her broader face, neither wide nor narrow with a straight bridge and a down-facing tip,” says Dr. Zannis “She has a slightly square-shaped face and her nose brings the eye straight down to her smile and up to her eyes, preventing her from ever looking boxy.”

Rosario Dawson

“Rosario Dawnson’s face is so striking because all her features are bold. When the eyes and lips are big you need a nose that can hold it’s own,“ says Zannis “It fills out her face; if her nose were narrower or smaller it would give her a pinched look and would distract from the beauty of her other prominent features.”

It’s important to offer as much detail as possible when exploring rhinoplasty. Consider that the nose is incredibly sensitive and could take 6 months to a year for a full recovery especially when there is work done to the septum and sinus cavity. “You don’t only want the nose to look great you want it to function well and a good surgeon will focus on both,” explains Dr. Zannis. He also advises people to factor in their face shape and ethnicity. “In addition to a coveted celebrity nose, bring pictures of other family members who have the nose you want. This will ensure that you’ll maintain features common to your ethnicity and family.”

Dr. John Zannis is a New Bern, North Carolina board-certified plastic surgeon and best selling author. A graduate of Stanford University and The University of Cincinnati Medical College, he received his formal training in General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina under the guidance of world-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Louis Argenta. During this time, he performed over 5,000 surgical procedures and covered all aspects of plastic surgery including cosmetic surgery of the face and body, complex reconstructive procedures of face and body, cleft lip and palate surgery, hand surgery, facial and jaw fracture repair, and reconstruction following massive weight loss. He blends his interests and studies of classical art and symmetry to his surgery practices.
