Bucket List Dreams

I have always loved to write. I guess it is the combination of my love for learning, boundless creativity, and passion for words and how they fit together that got me hooked. One of the first things I put down on paper at an early age was a bucket list. I know that sounds weird to think that as a little girl I was already looking to the future and writing down my long dreamy list of things I just desired to accomplish someday. But it is true. I spent as much time perfecting my penmanship as I did my words.

I have been fortunate that I have been able to check a lot of those items off my list. One of them recently which was to publish a book series. I wrote my first five books in 6 weeks although I have just published one book so far. Ha. I know that sounds crazy but it’s true. I will share that story with you in upcoming post. Anyway, I spent hours upon hours reading and researching my different options for publishing before deciding to self publish through Amazon’s publishing company Create Space. For all those currently working on their first book or thinking about it, I highly recommend Create Space. It is easier than you think and you can do it!

I decided to enter my book into the national “Independent Publisher’s Book Awards” after receiving a random email. I had no idea what an “IPPY” award was but I thought to myself, what the heck why not give it a shot? IPPY rhymes with YIPPY so let’s have fun with it; and guess what? I WON a national bronze medal! As if winning is not enough my book will be featured in the New York book expo at the end of the month. So exciting!

I want to spread the love and celebrate with “It’s a Glam Thing” loyal readers and followers by gifting an autographed book to the first FIVE readers who email me “Yippy for IPPY bronze” along with their full name and mailing address to juleeireland@gmail.com.

Be sure to send me photos of your DIY creations so I can share them across my social media platforms. Enjoy and remember to Dream Big and start checking off that bucket list. xo

Rock your Posture

When it comes to looking your best, a small change can often make a huge difference. Correct posture is of utmost importance when you want to look good and manifest self-assurance to the rest of the world. If you want to rock your look then start with good posture.

Standing up straight projects a strong sense of self. It gives you an exquisite appearance. It is also sexy to have good posture. People with great posture are the kind of people others want to be around — and want to be.
If you slouch, stop. Get into the habit of walking erect, as if a string is pulling your head from the top. It might be tough, or feel strange or uncomfortable at first. But soon your body will adjust.

The truth is, poor posture can lead to problems down the road. Slouching can create a rounded back and shoulders, and lead to long-term pain and degradation of connective tissue through misalignment of the vertebrae and the interspersed necessary vertebral disks. A rounded back projects low self-esteem, as well as poor physical health and fitness. It also makes one look old.

Example of the way a person can look when the posture is poor.

Example of the way a person can look when the posture is poor.

I have a young friend who hunches over, which makes her come off as if she is withdrawn and tired, and lacking in self-worth. It makes her stomach pouch out. Standing tall — a small change — would make a huge difference in her overall appearance.

Good posture will help you ooze confidence and youth. In addition, it helps with proper breathing, improves circulation, instantly slims you, enhances the health of your spine and eases your muscles and joints. Plus, it totally changes your frame of mind. When I stand tall, I feel like I can take on the world. So I strut my stuff.

Look at yourself in a full-length mirror, or in the reflection of a window as you walk down the street. Now, pull your shoulders back. Make a conscious effort to stand and sit straight. It may take some time, but you will eventually have strong, correct posture that make you look and feel healthy, happy and confident.

Just take a look at any of the celebrities on the red carpet and you will notice how they project themselves with good posture.

And that my, friends, is beautiful.

Donna’s List of Natural Beauty Concoctions for Face & Hair

As many of you know, I use natural remedies on a regular basis and have shared some of them before but I thought I would share many of them in a list.

simple beauty

Donna Spangler simple beauty

I like to start out with an exfoliant.bowl-with-baking-soda-paste

Do you want to get your skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom? Nothing polishes the face better than the fine granules that baking soda is made of. I love to use this simple and inexpensive home remedy to smooth the skin, especially on the face. It’s quick and easy.donna-baking-soda-scrub

putting the baking soda paste on in a circular motion
It also travels well, dry in a sealed plastic baggy.

First, take a scoop of baking soda and add a small amount of water just enough to make a paste. Then, take the paste and put it on your face rubbing in a circular motion. Cover the whole face and stop when you feel that your face is fully cleaned and polished.

Lastly, run warm water and rinse. Make sure you get all the granules off.

Your skin will feel smooth and polished

Another natural exfoliant is honey. I keep a container in my bathroom so I can use it to wash my face when I take a bath or shower. It takes off the dirt and is a natural antibacterial. It does not strip the skin of natural oils and balances the skin. Even if the honey has started to turn more coarse and sugary I use it as it has a great exfoliant texture. In addition ,it is inexpensive!

Below are other options:

Banana oatmeal skin exfoliant
mash a banana with a small amount of oatmeal
blend well and apply to face for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water

Banana Peal acne relief
use the peal of a ripe yellow or yellow/ brown banana
put the inside part of the peal to the face where you have acne problem
rub over area for about 10 minutes till inside turns brown
leave it on an do not wash off for about one hour till you go to bed
you can however leave it on overnight
repeat daily until redness goes away.

Tomato Facial
cut a tomato in half and rub the half all over the face in a circular motion
rinse with warm water and moisturize

For a sunburn
tomato juice and /buttermilk delight
2 parts tomato juice and 4 parts buttermilk
mix together then put on sunburn let it stand for 30-40 minutes rinse

Confidence is Key

confidence1

Recently I attended a networking event called, “LipStick Mania Business Social” and the topic was about image. I was expecting the regular spiels about hair, make up, and clothes. To my surprise the speaker, Marjory Brifil spoke of inner image which I am all about. I believe that image is tied to your self-esteem and it has to come from within. She spoke of four topics I want to share with you.

Self-Awareness – The word says it all, aware of one’s self, including one’s traits, feelings, and behaviors. It is important to know thyself. Know your strengths and your weakness. If you are not sure of your strengths and weaknesses here is a little exercise you can do. Take a blank piece of paper and draw a line down the center on the right side write the word strength on the left side of the line write the word weakness. Then write at least things on 10 on each side.

Self-Care – Taking care of yourself is so important, yet we rarely do it on a regular basis. Women we put everyone in front of ourselves. Taking care of one’s self is a deliberate action you take to care for your physical, mental and emotional health. Make an appointment with yourself to do just that, read a book, exercise, or meditate, whatever you need to do to safeguard your well-being body, mind and spirt.

Passion – The definition of passion is a strong and barely controllable emotion. If you are not sure what your passion is, just think back to when you were a child. What did you like to do when you were little? What did you want to be when you grew up? Reconnect to what you loved and be passionate about it, may it be your business, your family or even your friends.

Enthusiast – Embrace your enthusiasm, don’t hold back because you fear judgement from others. When you do something enthusiastically, you do it with excitement and eagerness and when you are genuine others will feel your excitement and join in with you.
When you truly connect with these 4 things, your outer image will be vibrant and no one can resist you, people will be drawn to you and that will be beneficial to you and your business.

Rock that Holiday Look

Think costume theatrical. The classic theme for the holidays is festive, so it’s a great time to dress up and celebrate. Be daring, and have fun with colors and makeup.

Choose sparkling, bright sequin dresses in reds, pinks, silvers, greens and blues. I found a great pink sequin dress that I only paid $10 for at a discount store. I kept it in my closet just so I could wear it during the holiday season.

If you are more conservative, classic black always provides a classic, subtle and polished look.

Donna Spangler i black sequin dress

Either way, the key to rocking any dress is making sure it fits properly. It should be tight enough to show off your assets — yet not so tight as to pull or make you look like a stuffed sausage.

Your makeup should be complimentary, with a strong emphasis on the eyes, especially for an evening event. Always apply eyeliner and mascara; you can even add some shimmer or sparkles.

maggie o brien

Just remember to blend and keep both sides symmetrical. Play around with your lips. I always choose a darker color with a light color over the lips, especially if you opt for a dramatic look on the eyes.

Above all, have fun! And happy holidays!
