Queen’s Cup Fashions


The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase is in its 20th year and has become one of the South’s “must-go” events. Of course, “What to wear?” is always one of the most crucial questions!  Today on WJZY-FOX46 Good Day Charlotte I got to show some of the latest men’s and women’s spring styles appropriate for this special event, showcasing fashions from Lindy Bop, The Pink Hanger, and Charlotte fashion designers D.J. Boyd (DeJaBo Ties) and LeMond Crayton-Hart (The House of LeMond).

The look for women at this event is somewhat casual—sundresses, skirts, and dressy slacks will all work. And don’t forget the flat-soled shoes …stilettos have no place here!

Samantha looked beautiful in a gorgeous kelly green Amanda Uprichard dress from The Pink Hanger, a contemporary women’s boutique carrying trend-setting styles from top designers. Simple and sophisticated, the dress was paired with a two-toned floppy hat for sun protection and style, a cork clutch and matching gold accessories, making her look perfect for this event! You can soon find the entire outfit at The Pink Hanger’s online shopping website launching later this month or get it directly from the store at Charlotte’s Providence Plaza Shopping Center.

Samantha and model Kelly Melerine were definitely “styling and profiling” in coordinating steeplechase outfits! Kelly wore a traditional double-breasted pinstripe jacket that took a modern turn when combined with a navy and white checkered shirt, green seersucker pants, peacock print bow tie and white pocket square (both from DejaBo Ties), and peacock lapel pin and Cafe LeMond cuff links. Mixing a bit of the old and new, a vintage-feel Kenneth Cole Chukka boot and vintage Dobb boater hat completed his outfit, available at The House of LeMond in Charlotte’s Optimist Park.

The Queen’s Cup is an event for the whole family.  So I thought it would also be fun to show a great mother/daughter look!

Susan Lee-Bird and her daughter Kathryn looked adorable in these matching blue floral dresses from Lindy Bop, an online store specializing in vintage-inspired dresses, skirts and other items for women and girls.

Kathryn wore their Audrey style, featuring a bateau neckline, while Susan wore the Lana style, with a flattering scoop neckline. Both dresses have full swing skirts and you can add a petticoat to make these looks even more festive! To complete their ensembles, I grabbed a hot glue gun, some ribbon and flowers and restyled two vintage hats found in the back of my closet! (Note: Big style doesn’t always have to have a big price tag:)

While the usual Queen’s Cup look for men tends to include khakis, polo shirts and the occasional linen suit, Designer LeMond Crayton-Hart says the race is also great time to be a little more fashion forward. “The key to adding dimension to an outfit”, he says, “is mixing coordinating colors and alternating patterns”.

The dapper designer worked the runway himself wearing a DKNY french cuff shirt, Ralph Lauren seersucker pants, Spring Camo Happy Socks, a custom bowtie and pocket square from DeJaBowties, and custom lapel feather and cuff links from his own collection. His look was stylishly finished with a classic fedora, vintage custom-tailored blazer and Carolina blue and white suede wingtips.

Lastly, I decided I had to get in on the action by paying tribute to Julia Roberts in a brown and white polka dot dress, also from Lindy Bop…after all, “Pretty Woman” is still one of my all-time-favorite rom-coms!

How to Maintain Polished Brows in Warm/Humid Weather

April, 2015 (New York, NY) – Bold brows are not a trend, they are here to stay – every celebrity seems to have transformed their pencil thin arches into bolder straighter frames, and it’s benefited every single one of them! Keep in mind that a perfectly polished brow requires more than just getting rid of stray hairs every month, but not much more (wink).  Boom Boom, owner of Boom Boom Brow Bar, gives tips on how to get eyebrows ready for the warmer seasons, whether hitting spring break, the Rivera or a rooftop with a chair, beautifully groomed brows make a girl feel GORG!

“It starts with a tint, taking a few minutes to darken your eyebrows reduces time in a tight beauty routine. And don’t worry about matching the color so perfectly to your head hair, nowadays anything goes.  Think of it like bags and shoes, they used to have to match, but now it’s actually cooler if they don’t!” says Boom Boom.

A tint is like a glaze, it’s semi permanent so it will gracefully wear away.  First an esthetician applies Vaseline to the skin surrounding the hair to protect it and prevent the dye from bleeding onto skin, and then the vegetable-based tint is applied to the brow hair and processes for about 10 minutes before it’s wiped away.  Tints add definition by coloring the brow hair, as well as all the teeny tiny little hairs that are usually invisible, so the result is a much bolder brow.  Note to self-tanners, skip tanning the week before coming in for a tint – tanners can sometimes react badly with dye.

“A good brow tint gives you a thicker style, a more youthful appearance and is the perfect solution to keeping brows looking great in warm humid climates where makeup melts or water washes it away,” adds Boom Boom.  It’s also great for on-the-go gals who don’t have time to apply much makeup or prefer a more natural look.  The added bonus is even looking good at the gym and when waking up in the morning!!

The loveliness lasts 4-6 four to six weeks; just avoid oil-based moisturizers, cleansers, or wipes, which can cause fadage.  Applying sunscreen to brows protects them even more.

Preparing brows for the warmer more humid weather in advance allows a girl to kick back, toss her flip-flops in reckless abandon and enjoy life….all while looking FAB!!

Spring Into Action

Spring has sprung Spring is here and let me tell you, I have never appreciated Spring more since I’ve moved from California. It’s time to shake off those Winter blues and spring into action.
Spring comes with cleaning, washing the windows, the walls, cleaning out closets and putting away all those dreadful winter clothes. Did you know you are burning calories while you are doing those things? You are, if you are doing them with gusto! While washing those windows/walls if you are extending those arms all the way up and you are on your tip toes and putting a little elbow grease into it, you are working that upper body. Also, when you come down and add a little squat you are hitting that lower body, a full body workout all while making your house Spring clean!

Spring time is when you start thinking about, getting ready for your bathing suit. So of course, you start working out and go on that strict diet but there are many other things you can do to get ready for that bikini. Here are a few tips to get you on your way:
Clean out your refrigerator/cupboards, throw away all those goodies that were soothing while being stuck in the house watching TV sitting in front of the fireplace. You don’t need any temptation. Fill your refrigerator with greens, fruits and things that are good for you.
Update your workout wardrobe, get some bright colors, new styles and some new shoes it will give you a little more pep in your step.

Gardening
Enjoy the beautiful weather, get outside. Of course, we think of getting your walk on or taking a jog, but there are other ways to get that heart rate up. Washing your car, cutting the grass, planting in your garden, pulling those weeds are just a few things you can do to burn calories and enjoy the wonderful spring weather.
