The New American Plate

unnamed-10

When you hear the phrases “eating nutritious foods,” “juicing,” or “drinking green smoothies,” the first thought that comes to mind is probably one related to weight loss. And truthfully, that is probably the primary reason that most women watch what they consume on a daily basis. However, there are many other health and beauty benefits to consuming foods high in nutritional content, and here are just a few to consider:

Reduced Disease Risk

Many health researchers indicate that eating a nutritious diet can help reduce your risk of various types of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more. This means that focusing on dietary nutrition can help you live a longer life that’s also higher in quality as you’re less likely to be bedridden with some life-threatening disease in your later years.

To decrease your risk, the American Institute for Cancer Research recommends that you simply follow a concept they call The New American Plate. Essentially this means filling your plate two-thirds with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans while the remaining one-third should contain some type of animal protein such as chicken or fish.

Clearer Skin

Many studies have found a connection between diet and skin issues, such as one published in Dermato Endocrinology that discusses how people who eat high glycemic foods (foods higher in sugar) tend to have more acne-related issues. Therefore, limiting these types of foods in your own diet can ultimately result in a clearer complexion.

Additionally, some women have found that eating nutritious foods and drinking vitamin-rich juices helps clear their skin in other ways. For instance, healthy-business owner Jil Larsen was diagnosed with a skin disorder that caused dark spots to appear, and it was all because of what she was eating. However, she was able to reverse it within a few months of changing her diet to one that involved eating more nutrients and juicing.

Fuller, Healthier Hair

Hair loss is a huge concern for a lot of women and rightfully so. Harvard Medical School has discovered that almost one in three women experience this unpleasant issue, typically referred to in the medical field as alopecia. This type of hair loss generally starts wherever you part your hair, with the top of the head showing the greatest effects.

Fortunately, diet can often help, especially if your hair loss is due to a lack of iron. This means that you can have fuller, healthier hair simply by eating more iron-rich foods like red meat, poultry, beans, dark leafy greens, and iron-fortified cereals.

Greater Mental Clarity

Did you know that the foods you eat on a regular basis can impact you mentally? Specifically, they can affect your moods and mood patterns, impact your ability to fight off depression and anxiety, and can even potentially help prevent mind-related disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s.

That’s why the Mental Health Foundation suggests eating fewer processed foods or foods high in sugar. Instead, they recommend that you focus primarily on consuming wholegrain foods (think cereal, rice, pasta, and potatoes), fruit, and vegetables. Furthermore, eating some type of protein at every meal helps regulate your hormones so your brain function stays steady all day long. Fish is always a great option as it contains many good-for-you nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial to your heart.

Improving your diet certainly offers many different health and beauty benefits, and these are just a few. If you know any more, feel free to share them in the comment section below!

Tips for Having a Healthy Glow for the Holidays

Kalologie Spa

It’s hard to believe, but the holiday season is just around the corner. The holidays are a time when we gather at parties, get-togethers and other fun festivals to visit with friends and loved ones often not seen for months, or sometimes even years! It is also the one time of the year when everyone wants their skin looking its best, because those holiday pictures go on to last for many years to come! Yet with the change in season, people tend to find their skin looking dull. The good news is that there are many simple and easy solutions to help get back and keep a healthy glow through the holiday season.

“Seasons change, and as a result the air changes, but most people continue with the same skin care regimen throughout the entire year,” explains Tracy Brennan, founder of Kalologie, a chain of high-end spas and line of award-winning skin care products. “The changing of the seasons means it’s time to change what you are doing to your skin, too. Out with the old routines and in with the new regimens that are going to be designed to keep your skin healthy all fall and winter long.”

In an effort to not be trapped by the same routine that was followed all summer long, Brentwood Kalologie 360 Spa Franchise Owner Anita Neumann recommends keeping the following tips in mind to have a healthy glow for the holidays:

  • Make a transition into new skin care products. Opt for ones that have been designed to help skin have a healthy glow. The Kalologie line of award-winning skin care products, for example, have been scientifically formulated to keep skin looking healthy, vibrant, and glowing.
  • Check the ingredients in the products being used on the skin. Some ingredients are potentially harmful, and can can irritate the skin.  For example, avoid formulations containing parabens and sulfates. Opt instead for products with effective ingredients that are formulated without harmful petrochemicals.
  • Visit the spa and get a facial. Work with a skin care specialist to determine the best facial for the skin type, but opt for one that is going to brighten and give an instant glow. While there, consider other helpful treatments that can help correct problems and advance skin health, such as the Dermapen and liquid facelifts available at Kalologie 360 Spas.
  • Most people feel stressed out during the holiday season, which can have an impact on the skin. Opt for a massage to help eliminate the stress and bring about a more relaxing holiday season. People will see the difference in the skin and face.
  • Eating well is one of the best preventative measures that people can employ to help protect their skin and maintain a healthy glow. Opt for lots of antioxidant-rich foods, such as carrots, spinach, strawberries, blueberries, and sweet potatoes.
  • Avoid doing damaging things to the skin, such as using harmful tanning beds. Those who want a healthy tanning option throughout the winter should consider organic spray tan options, which work well, but avoid the harmful chemicals and UV rays.

“When it’s colder you reach for a jacket, but you should also be reaching for skin care products that will help protect your skin during this weather,” added Brennan. “Everyone can have a nice, healthy glow for the holidays if they want to. Giving a spa gift also makes for a great holiday treat.  And even though it’s colder, don’t forget to continue to reach for sunscreen.  It’s one of the best ways to help prevent future potential skin care issues.”

Kalologie is a spa and award-winning skin care product line, with several locations in the Los Angeles area, including in Brentwood, Beverly Hills, Thousand Oaks, Ladera Ranch and Studio City. Kalologie also has locations in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado, and Kalologie products can be found at the Aria Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. They are frequented by A-List celebrities and socialites. The spas offer a wide variety of memberships and aesthetic treatments, including facials, peels, waxing, massage therapy, and their skin care line, which features specially formulated cleansers, eye creams, serums, and moisturizers. HOW CAN KIDS DECORATE PUMPKINS SAFELY?

That’s why you will fall in love with the Spritz Pumpkin Craft Kits! Now you can put the craft paint and supplies out on the table and your kids can decorate their very own pumpkin with ease! This is also a great craft activity idea for a school or birthday party to keep the kids busy. Each kit comes complete with all of the self-adhesive supplies that you need to decorate your pumpkin. The best part is the price-$3.00 for the simple kits such as a bat, witch, fox, owl or cat and $5.00 for a few of the more elaborate decorative design kits which are perfect for adults. Now, head to the pumpkin patch in search of the perfect pumpkin to use with your Spritz Pumpkin Craft Kit!

WHAT IS A FUN HALLOWEEN PARTY THEME?

Planning the perfect party always begins with the perfect party theme. Playing dress up is not just for kids when it comes to Halloween. Adults also love to go all out when putting together a creative costume, which sometimes includes face paint, and it’s not always easy to do face painting on your self. Just about any of your local mass retailers carry Temporary Face Tattoos that are quick and easy to use. Use clothing from your own closet along with the Temporary Face tattoos to create a complete costume look! For the spider face, you can wear all black or for the deer you can outfit yourself in brown. The real icing on the cake is the price, at only $3.00. Now you can get creative and join in on all of the Halloween fun without spending a lot of money.

WHAT IS A FUN “DIY ON THE FLY” HALLOWEEN CRAFT PROJECT?

Just like there’s more than one-way to skin a cat, there is also more than one-way to carve a pumpkin, or NOT! Here’s a simple, fun and inexpensive way to repurpose your kids old crayons and create festive pumpkin decor for your home or as a table centerpiece without having to use a carving knife.

DIY on the FLY Halloween Pumpkin Crafts

sock_pumpkin_halloween_craft_DIY_on_the_fly_julee_ireland_9

I love to search for items at the dollar store or dollar bins to use for crafting. Believe it or not there is a lot that you can do with a pair of socks including making these darling sock pumpkins! This is a great craft project to make with your kids, family or friends to create fun Halloween decor for your home. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money either! I always find seasonal socks at stores in the dollar bins and you can too!

sock_pumpkin_halloween_craft_DIY_on_the_fly_julee_ireland_2Supplies: Mini pumpkin, pipe cleaners, one pair of adult seasonal socks, scissors, felt square in desired color.

Step Three: Turn right side out and place your pumpkin inside. Pull the sock up tightly around the stem and use a few pipe cleaners to tightly secure your sock. I usually build the stem with pipe cleaners and add some curves for whimsy. Use your felt square to cut out a simple leaf and use a small piece of pipe cleaner to attach it to your pumpkin stem. That’s it! Enjoy this fun and simple sock pumpkin decor.
