Women’s Health reveals: beauty companies are no longer reduce the green convo to whether a product is “natural” or “organic”.

karlie-kloss-women-s-health-magazine-october-2016-issue-2

Information provided by Health Magazine: Our modern lifestyles are rough on the planet, and it shows. In the magazine’s October issue, Women’s Health reveals how beauty companies are no longer reducing the green convo to whether a product is “natural” or “organic”. They’re paying attention to every single way their ingredient sourcing and manufacturing processes affect you and the earth. Since, navigating these new waters can be murky, we’ve created a primer on what to look for next time you shop the beauty aisle.

A few tips and corresponding product picks:

  • Avoid Microbeads: Those plastic balls in face scrubs found their way into waters, fish, and now us. Last year Congress passed the Microbead-Free Waters Act, banning manufacturing of the ingredient by next year. Look for products with jojoba wax instead – a plant-based ingredient that is biodegradable.

o   DUNES (Gentle Face Exfoliant, $35)

  • Recycle Through the Brand: Some companies have created programs that make recycling easier than ever. Burt’s Bees has a program for all of its lip-care products – and you can print a prepaid mailing label from their website.

o   BURTS BEES (Tinted Lip Balm, $5)

  • Look for Refillable Containers: Using the same bottle or container eliminates even the energy it takes to recycle. Makeup compacts are the easiest place to make the switch. Some boutiques sell products out of giant vats and into a bottle that you can continually reuse. Check out Common Good, which has 200 refill stations nationwide.

o   JANE IREDALE (PurePressed Base, $42, and Compact, $18)

  • Be Water-Wise with Concentrates: Avoid buying skin products where water is listed as the first ingredient. Balms and serums can deliver ingredients into skin without the need for water. The United Nations estimated that 1.8 billion people will live in regions with absolute water scarcity by 2025 – so wasting a drop on your beauty routine is practically a crime against humanity.

o   ONE LOVE ORGANICS (Skin Savior Multi-Taking Wonder Balm, $49)

  • Check the Seal: Look for labels that say Ecocert, Cradle to Cradle, Fair Trade Certified, or Rainforest Alliance. Any of them mean these products went through a third-party vetting process to prove they meet sustainability guidelines.

o   MRS. MEYERS (Daily Soap Bar, $3.99)

  • Choose Biodegradable: Cleansers and cleansing wipes eliminate the need for water – and you can trash them.

o   YES TO (PrimRose Oil Facial Wipes, $6)

  • Be Careful with Glass: In theory glass can be recycled, but the reality is that different colors don’t always get sorted, and transporting them can increase CO2 fumes. To be sustainable, buy glass items with longer shelf lives, like fragrances, or products made in small batches to minimize waste.

o   MCMC Fragrances (Maine Perfume Oil, $45)

  • Plastic Isn’t Always Bad: It’s light-weight, which means fewer CO2 emissions when shipped than glass – and at least a portion of many bottles consist of post-consumer recycled content (PCR). Some brands use 100 percent PCR plastic recovered from the ocean.

o    METHOD (Refreshing Body Wash, $6)

  • Don’t Always Assume Natural is Better: If the only way to get the natural version is by schlepping to some far-flung place – which could take more energy and release more CO2 emissions – it could actually make more sense to use a synthetic version. When you do opt for a natural product, look for local, sustainably grown ingredients.

o   TATE HARPER (Lip and Cheek Tint, $36)

Spring Cleaning Can Be a Breeze! Get Your Home Organized, Clean and Ready for Spring

unnamed-9

Step 1: Get organized and have the right tools

Have a plan. Make a realistic list of what you want to accomplish and stick to it. Also, make sure you have what you need in terms of equipment before you start: vacuum with extra bags, cleaning products, cloths, gas for the lawn mower, sharpened clippers for the hedges… whatever is on your list of things to tackle, make a secondary list of the tools you will need to get the job done. There’s nothing more distracting than having to stop everything to make a trip to the local supply store. Start with that, armed with your to do list, and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and delay.

Step 2: Start with decluttering

There are two things that contribute to clutter. Number one is the fact that we often don’t put things in the right place — which is because we often don’t have a ‘right place’ for it. Two, we have too much stuff. This becomes patently obvious when you discover boxes in the basement of things that you never unpacked, from two moves ago!

There are four areas of the house that are typical clutter zones:

•    Kid bedrooms

•    Mud rooms or entranceways

•    Dining room

•    Garage or sheds

For the kids bedrooms, see the tips below on how to ‘get everyone involved’. The mud room and garage are places where everyone tends to drop things on their way to another part of the house. So go back to the plan in Step 1 and figure out where everything is going to go. If everything has a place and everyone knows what those homes are, in time, fewer things will get dropped in the middle of the room.

You can add storage items to your mudroom or entranceway to make even the smallest space more efficient: Baskets for mittens and hats, racks for shoes and boots, hooks for bags. The garage or shed would benefit from the same treatment: hooks for shovels and rakes, metal storage racks with buckets for odds and ends.

As to the dining room? Make a new rule: anyone who dumps stuff on the dining table will find it in the garbage in short order (if it’s homework, you may just want to hide it away for a day or two!) The whole family will learn quickly enough!

Step 3: Get everyone involved

Speaking of learning, there are kids out there (somewhere) who are super efficient and keep their toys properly organized in color coded boxes, neatly stacked in the playroom. Okay… now back to reality. No kids do that, but they can learn to. They can learn that every toy, book and article of clothing has a home and that home is not the living room sofa.

If your kids are little, print a picture of whatever needs to go in which box, shelf or basket and tape it to the front of the receptacle, so they learn where everything goes. Cooperation is best achieved with a little incentive: the good stuff like video games or tablet time need to be dependent on having a tidy room and the prompt removal of toys from the common areas at the end of a day of playing…

Are you living with a tiny hoarder? It might be time for some ninja stealth action when they are out of the house and clear some of the toys from their rooms. Tip? Don’t throw the toys out right away. Store them in the basement or garage in a plain box for a month before tossing them, just in case it turns out you tossed out something they had their hearts set on keeping. Don’t worry: you’ll hear about it soon enough!

Step 4: Big items get done first

The sense of achievement you’ll feel if you get a few of the big things out of the way make the rest of the smaller tasks easier.

Like what?

•    Flipping and cleaning the mattresses (Tip: Throw some baking soda on your mattress and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it of. It will neutralize any odors. You can also drag it outside for some sunlight, which has the same effect, but it’s not always a practical option!)

•    Steam cleaning the carpets (Need an easy fix for dents made by heavy furniture in the carpet fibers? Put an ice cube in each dent and let it melt. When it has melted and the area is dampened, take a cloth and blot the excess water and iron the area, again with a towel over top. Once the area is dry, you’ll be able to fluff up your carpet fibers so they look as good as new!)

•    Emptying and cleaning out the refrigerator or freezer

Once some of these bigger chores are done, reorganizing the junk drawer in the kitchen won’t seem daunting at all.

Step 5: Inside And out

Don’t forget to look beyond the walls of the house to the garden areas. Stand on the sidewalk or in front of your house and look at it: does it look like you could put it on the market to sell it? No? Time to add to the list from Step 1. Whether it’s a coat of fresh paint or a spray wash, fixing shutters or hanging baskets, trimming the bushes or raking up the leaves from last fall, there’s always plenty to do outside. This is another great area to get the kids involved, since they benefit from a breath of fresh air too! No job seems quite as bad with the sun shining on your head!

Love The Skin You’re In

love yourself

When you look in the mirror what do you see? Is it an ugly duckling or a beautiful swan? Well, we are not going to tear ourselves down we are about to lift ourselves up. This week I want us to focus on what we love about ourselves, we must love the skin we are in, in order to make changes within. I know I was always talking about the things I wanted to change about my body (I wish I had thinner thighs) but to make a change in ourselves we need to do it from a place of love not hate. So, do this exercise with me. We are going to work on three areas of the body, top, middle and bottom, keeping it simple. Let’s get started, grab your pen and paper and move into a private space with a mirror (I like the bathroom).

1. Stand in front of a mirror and gaze at yourself starting at the top (start at hair to collar bone)
Look at your face, what is your favorite feature here? Is it your eyes, your nose or even your cheekbones? Whatever it is write it down, by the way, it doesn’t have to be just one.

2. Drop that robe and look at your image. We are focusing on the middle (from the collar bone to the hip bone) embrace all of you. Remember we are loving ourselves so, what is your favorite part here? Is it your collar bone, your bellybutton or your back? Write down your favorite part or parts.

3. Move to the bottom (from your hip bones to your toes). Step back so you can see that lower body. Do the same thing here. Is your favorite part your knees, the junk in your trunk or your cute little toe? Write it down.

Now that you have covered your entire body; I want you to read your list out loud looking at yourself in the mirror. It will go something like this: “I love my eyes, nose and ears. I love my bellybutton, I love my thighs and my feet. “I want you to add at the bottom of the list – I love you.

I know this exercise seems strange but trust me. Losing weight is more that hitting the gym. We must expand our self-awareness to succeed. Keep this list near so that when you find yourself struggling to love you, pull out your list and read it.

When we love ourselves we treat ourselves better, we tend to move like we love ourselves, we eat like we love ourselves and we speak like we love ourselves. To achieve the body you desire you have to make that change out of love. So, love the skin you are in.

Hynt Beauty presents another great recipe from Abby Phon

Chocolate Covered Organic Raw Matcha Macaroons

Gluten-free & Vegan

Ingredients

1 cup organic raw walnuts
2 cups organic unsweetened finely shredded coconut
2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
1/3 cup organic coconut nectar
1 ½ tbsp organic matcha green tea powder
1 tsp organic vanilla extract
1 pinch sea salt

Directions

Using a small ice cream scoop or melon baller, put balls onto a Silpat sheet or parchment paper on a cookie sheet.

Optional: run the mixture through the food processor again to ensure everything is well mixed, and green.

Mix all the ingredients together in a medium sized mixing bowl.

In a food processor pulse nuts until chopped very fine. Don’t over-blend, or you’ll get walnut butter!

Enjoy as is (they’re delicious moist!) or dry them out in the oven.

To oven dry them out: Put them in the oven on the lowest setting for a few minutes just to remove some of the moisture. For these to be “raw” you need an oven that can go down to 115 degrees F for 1 to 2 hours. You don’t want to actually cook them.

Cook’s note: My oven only went down to 170F, so I baked them at 170F for about 5 minutes, turned off the oven with the tray still inside, and let everything cool back to room temperature. They were fantastic!

Homemade Ganache – optional
Gluten Free & Vegan
Ingredients

¼ cup organic coconut oil, melted
¼ cup cacao powder
2-4 tbsp organic coconut nectar or maple syrup

Directions

On stove top over low heat, whisk all ingredients together.

Continue mixing until smooth and well-combined.

Dip macaroons, and transfer to wire rack to cool.
