All About the Shag – the inside scoop on why it’s so hot

“Shags are fun, they embrace natural textures, are good for any gender, they’re low maintenance, versatile and easy to personalize…that’s why they will continue to be on trend in 2023,” explains Teresa Romero, Creative Director for Sam Villa and Artistic/Education Director for Jose Luis Salon @_teresa_romero.

They beauty is anyone can wear a shag.

  • Texture: Finer hair types need strategic point cutting for lift and texture, whereas coarse curly types usually need some strategic weight assessment to prevent expanding the shape too much.
  • Face Shape: All face shapes can wear a shag.  Fringe lengths determine what parts of the face are complemented or minimized. Shorter fringe brings attention to the top half of the face and longer fringe brings attention to the lower half.
  • Layers: It’s all about the layers. The more layers and texturizing, the more the hair can freely move for that lived-in shaggy appearance.
  • Maintenance: A good shag should last a few months or more before needing a full reshaping. Shorter fringe may need a trim in between visits. Good home care that compliments hair texture and color is a must. Coarse hair needs more moisture and finer/chemically processed hair needs moisture and protein.

Model 1 (Kaitlyn Covington): This wolf cut is a hybrid of shags of the past with longer layers on top and a shorter modern fringe around the face. Depending on hair texture, styling is shake and go or shaped into place with a Sam Villa Signature Series Oval Brush.

Create the “Un-Wave”

January, 2016 (New York, NY) – The un-wave is the new wave in town, it may look like it just organically appeared, but it takes a little bit of effort to look so effortless. “The un-wave is not a beachy wave nor is it straight, but it’s the texture of the moment and is the added touch any style needs to be current,” says Roche.

The Un-Wave
· Hold Pureology Sea-Kissed Texturizer Salt-Free Tousle Mist 12” from hair, spray entire head and then blow dry in for texture.
· Starting at the top front of the head, create section with fingers, spray section with Pureology Sea-Kissed Texturizer Salt-Free Tousle Mist again, comb out with fingers and wrap the roller around section so it’s tight to the head and the ends are left out and pin roller to secure. Do the entire top of head.
· For the sides, create section with fingers, spray with Pureology Sea-Kissed Texturizer Salt-Free Tousle Mist again and roll one of the larger rollers up in the hair and just hold for 10 seconds. Then, unroll the hair and scrunch it so the while it cools more texture is being created.
· Once the sides are finished, take out all the top rollers and starting at the ends, use fingers to break up the wave, roughing up the texture at the same time.

Kendall Jenner’s Top Knot is so easy to achieve with KMS California

Kendall Jenner rocked a chic top knot with an edgy flair of side swept bangs on the red carpet of the American Music Awards. Celebrity hairstylist, Etienne Ortega, created this sleek top knot look with the help of KMS California products. “My inspiration for Kendall’s look was a funky modern top knot with a wispy bang, that goes perfect with her high neck dress!” Here’s the scoop from Ortega on how to get Kendall’s red carpet look:

Step 1: Ortega used KMS California ADD VOLUME styling foam ($17.50) while the hair was damp and roughly blow dried her hair.

Step 2: Ortega used the KMS California HAIR PLAY messing cream ($20), putting a quarter size amount in his palms and worked it all throughout the hair to start creating a build up of texture.

Step 3: Then Ortega put her hair up into a pony, followed by twisting the hair into a fun top knot.

Step 4: To finish the look he used the KMS California HAIR PLAY playable texture ($20) to make her bangs textured, piecey and ready to hit the red carpet.

Helmut Lange at NYC Fashion Week

Helmut Lang’s Spring/Summer 2014 runway show last Friday was the epitome of cool. Helping to bring the brand’s inspiration to life was Lead Stylist Paul Hanlon for UNITE Hair. “The look was inspired by Helmut Lang’s designs, which were a nod back to the 90’s. I wanted the hair to have strong, clean lines to balance the baggier clothes. It is a bit masculine, but chic, and refined.”

  

 

To Get The Look:

1.      Prep the hair with the UNITE 7Seconds Condition ($26.25), which contains a thermal protector. Then use a blow dryer and a paddle brush to achieve pin-straight locks.. 2.      Next, apply UNITE Session Whip ($25), which really was the star product for this look. This weightless mousse gives the hair girth, but not hold (like a gel might). For best use, apply the mousse liberally from roots to ends and continue to blow dry the product into the hair until it is completely dry. 3.      To create the distinct part, use a rattail comb to perfectly section off the hair to the side, continuing to blow dry the hair straight down. 4.      Next take 2-inch sections of hair and spray the roots of each one with the UNITE Max Control Hairspray ($27.50). As with the previous steps, continue to use a blow dryer to set the hair. 5.      To complete this look, pull the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic. Then wrap a black leather hair accessory (Hanlon used one designed by Helmut Lang). 6.      For a finishing touch, pull out some of the baby hairs for an effortless, natural look.
