Common Skin Complaints and What to do About Them

blemished skin

Common Skin Complaints and What to do About Them

Our skin is our largest organ- not to mention it’s the thing people see first when they’re speaking to you. Unlike hair that you can just shove a hat on if it’s acting up, your face is different, which is why our skin is so highly linked to our self esteem. Most of us have some form of skin issue or another, but if yours is effecting your life it’s time to do something about it. Here are some common skin complaints and what to do about them.

Acne

If your acne has been going on for a while and isn’t resolving (or is getting worse) the best thing you can do is visit the doctor instead of trying to treat it at home. Often, acne is a hormonal issue and needs more than just celebrity endorsed skincare and strange home remedies. In fact, these can make it worse. A doctor will be able to either help you directly or refer you to a dermatologist, but either way it’s about getting to the cause of the problem rather than just treating the spots which are a symptom. Acne can be painful, embarrassing and destroy self confidence. Don’t just suffer with it, take action and give your GP a call.

Blackheads

Blackheads appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles. These bumps are called blackheads because the surface looks dark or black, as the sebum oxidizes with the air causing the dark appearance. They’re often found on the nose and can be unsightly and troublesome as they tend to keep reappearing. There are products that can help, charcoal derived from coconut shells is a great detoxifier and can help to remove these impurities from your pores. Face masks and pore strips are also good at getting rid of blackheads.

Dry skin

Dry skin feels uncomfortable and can flake off meaning it looks unpleasant. Makeup and fake tan won’t sit well over it, and in a bid to make yourself look better you can actually end up looking worse! Start by nourishing your body from the inside out, make sure you’re drinking enough water and eating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Gentle exfoliation will remove the existing dry and dead skin, and allow any moisturizer you put on underneath to work much more effectively. If it’s summertime and you skin is dry, make sure you’re protecting it properly from the sun. Use SPF and a hat to shade your face, and stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day.

Redness

Unless the redness is caused by a medical issue like rosacea or flushing due to temperature changes (common in menopausal women) then redness is likely just to be how your skin is. Some people just have more red undertones than others, but if you hate your rosy cheeks there’s no need to fret. Use a green based concealer which works by colour balancing and neutralizing the red and pink shades. If you find a good foundation with enough coverage, this alone could do the trick.

HellCat Maggie’s Launching Today! The First Whole-Plant CBD Skincare Line In The US

Hellcat Maggie’s Founder, Maggie Glover, shares some exciting news!

Hell Cat Maggie's Crystal Clearing Crystal Ball with Face Oil Moisturizer

HellCat Maggie’s Crystal Clearing Crystal Ball with Face Oil Moisturizer

I’m Maggie Glover, previous sufferer of bad skin, and founder of Hellcat Maggie’s – the first whole-plant CBD skincare line in the US made specifically for problematic complexions that use organic, non-comedogenic ingredients. Unfortunately, most skincare products are packed with ingredients that clog pores and cover up the symptoms, rather than treating a bad complexion. A few years ago, I had a terrible breakout unlike anything I had ever had before. Though I was used to monthly hormonal pimples on my chin and annoying clusters of clogged pores here and there, this breakout covered my cheeks, forehead, and nose. Suddenly, I had the face of a teenager – except I was 32, and I also had the beginnings of fine lines and wrinkles. I teamed up with my dermatologist and aesthetician to find out exactly what works, and why most beauty products out there are missing critical ingredients.

I created a CBD skincare line fully compliant with federal and state legislation. Hellcat Maggie’s is 9-free – so no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, parabens, or acetone.  We work with small farms to secure high CBD hemp plants that are grown organically without any pesticides or synthetic substances, and all sourced hemp plants are tested and confirmed to contain less than 0.3% THC.

The team here at It’s a Glam Thing is anxious to give these products a try.

Congratulations Maggie!

6 Underrated Treatment Options For Persistent Acne

What Causes Acne Anyway?

Acne is caused by a combination of our environment, as well as our own bodily processes. Oils and dead skin cells from our skin combine with bacteria to clog pores, leading to the appearance of unsightly pimples.

If you have persistent acne you’ve probably tried a long list of expensive solutions and even medications. Whether they’re just too costly to be maintained in the long term, or they don’t work very well, listed below are 6 affordable (if not, free) treatment options for tackling your persistent acne:

Acne causes

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV has been getting a lot of press lately because it is beneficial for so many things in the human body and that includes fighting acne. The acids in ACV help the fight by preventing inhibiting some strands of bacteria that grow in pores and cause acne.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel water is a hydrosol that contain many of the benefits of witch hazel plant and is known as a great toner for a long list of skin conditions, including acne. It works by effectively clearing away the oil and dirt that usually leads to clogged pores, while also helping to soothe the face if redness is also a factor.

Retinol

Retinol is a skincare ingredient that has been used for reducing wrinkles and signs of aging for quite some time but it can also help with acne. Retinol is a by-product of vitamin A that increases skin cell turnover, reducing the chances clogged pores. It also helps to regulate sebum production, reduce inflammation and boost collagen production.

It’s easily attainable as a cream but it leaves your skin somewhat vulnerable so wear plenty of sunscreen in the day or only use Retinol at night.

Cleansing and Exfoliating Masks

Just like with ACV, witch hazel and retinol, the best goal is to reduce the chances of clogged pores and stop acne before it can gain a foothold. Masks are a great way to reduce the chance of acne and treat yourself to a little spa time. Different masks have different benefits, like exfoliating to get rid of dead skin cells and moisturizing to boost skin elasticity. There are also masks to remove excess oil and reduce the look of acne scars. Everyone is different so the key to a good skin regime is finding products that work for you and don’t irritate your skin.

Cleansing and exfoliating masques

Reducing Stress

Stress is a huge factor in how well the body works. In modern times, chronic stress has become a major obstacle in the health of millions of people in terms of chronic illness such as high blood pressure.

However, stress also affects the skin and how well it can defend itself from bacteria and excess waste like dead skin and oils. Reducing stress will have numerous health benefits and often clearer skin. That being said, reducing stress is not an easy task because there are so many things to be stressed about. However try finding a tactic that works for you whether it be yoga, meditation, a quiet cup of tea or your favorite video games. The key is to lessen the effects of chronic stressors.

Exercising More

Acne is sometimes caused by hormone imbalances, lifestyle choices and genetics which makes it harder to treat. Therefore, you want to get to the root of the problem and treat your skin from within.

Exercise is great for the whole body and works to promote blood circulation which usually results in less clogged pores because of the body’s ability to carry waste . It also reduces stress, helps to restore hormone imbalances and a more balanced lifestyle. This often results in clearer and higher functioning skin.

women excercising

Don’t forget to shower and cleanse your face after exercising, otherwise all your efforts will go to waste.

Pregnancy Products and things you should know, Belli Beauty

Belli Beauty Anti Blemish Facial Wash

Belli Beauty Anti Blemish Facial Wash

This is especially concerning during pregnancy. On any given day, women typically use several topical skin care products, regularly exposing themselves to as many as 200 individual ingredients, including potentially harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through the pores into the bloodstream.
Shilpi Agarwal, M.D. is a medical advisor to Belli Beauty, a line of skin care products specifically formulated to exclude ingredients that studies have shown to have even remote connections to birth defects, miscarriage, etc. The board-certified family medicine practitioner is also a self-described beauty junkie and ingredients nerd. We have asked Dr. Agarwal to provide us with a “red flag” list of ingredients that are commonly found in skin care and cosmetic products but should be avoided during pregnancy and nursing. Check back soon for that information.
In the meantime, I’ll go over just a couple of Belli Beauty products that, even though I am not pregnant or nursing, I love. First off, the Anti-Blemish Facial Wash Complexion Perfect Cleanse is OB/GYN and dermatologist recommended. This product is allergy tested, Free of artificial dyes and fragrance. The formulation is phthalates free and free of any Parabens. Some of the ingredients are Cucumber, Olive Oil and Fruit Extract among other great stuff.
Here are some notes from research I have done on pregnancy and  acne. The Doctors TV quotes, my favorite LA based dermatologist, Dr, Jessica Wu as saying “During pregnancy, surging hormones cause a number of changes to the body, including blotches on the skin and acne. “If you’ve never had acne before, now is the time it will erupt all over your skin,” dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu says. The Doctors TV goes on to say, “A safe solution is the Belli Skincare line of products, which are specially tested and pregnancy safe. They were developed by Dr. Jason Rubin in 2002 and are the only skincare line that offers teratology screening, which produces a higher safety standard that guards against ingredients with even remote links to birth defects.”
The second product I would like to spotlight today is the Stretchmark Minimizing Cream Skin Restoration Correct. Again, this is OB/GYN and Dermatologist recommended. About stretchmarks, The Doctors TV says, “Stretch marks, or striea, are linear dermal tears or scars that occur when the skin is subjected to progressive stretching. “It’s a true injury, it’s a true scar,” dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer says.
Stretch marks can be minimized with creams. Belli Beauty Stretchmark Minimizing Cream Skin Restoration is specifically formulated to decrease the appearance of existing Stretchmarks of any age or any cause, even besides pregnancy. I have no stretchmarks but use the cream morning and night at the beginning and now once a day. I seem to feel it helps with my cellulite but I do not know that as true and Belli Beauty does not claim that.
I will be back with some facts from Shilpi Agarwal, M.D. , a medical advisor to Belli Beauty. She will provide us with some facts regarding product ingredients to avoid during pregnancy and nursing.

Find the perfect treatment solution for acne – Rediscover the secret to beauty with these tips!

An acne problem is not as simple as it appears to be. It is a complicated skin condition or disease that affects individuals in various ways. Minor acne conditions can be taken care of, and within a few days, they disappear automatically. Acne needs immediate treatment because without a proper treatment regimen it is not possible to cure the root of it. Now, the question is which treatment can prove to be the best for your acne problem. Well, there are different kinds of acne treatments and the one which suits you will depend on how severe your condition is. Rather than going to the trial and error method to discover whether your problem is occasional or epidemic, go to a professional skin doctor at the beginning itself. Acne products are available in a wide range in the market, but not all of them are as effective as they claim to be.

Can the anti-acne chemical products help in treating acne?

Moreover, treating acne problem using the chemical products available on the supermarket shelves is not the right solution because they provide a short-lasting result and even do not cure the issue of the root. Hence, there is a chance that the problem will evolve again after a few days. The ingredients used to formulate the acne treatment products differ from one brand to other. Some people are allergic to some products and using products which contain ingredients that they are allergic to can further enhance the acne issue. So, it’s always better to visit a skin professional for consultation. He can help you to understand the right kind of product and treatment which are required for the kind of acne problem you are suffering from.

Acne treatment needs time

When the acne problem is at the moderate stage, extraction and light therapy are often used along with retinoid creams and an oral antibiotic. It depends on the recommendation as well as the observation of your skin doctor. Proper treatment is necessary to ensure that it does not occur again once cured. Acne cure sometimes takes a lot of time, and over the counter, drugs fail to show their effects. There is no need to feel hopeless because certain kinds of acne do take time to cure from inside but over the time if you continue with the right regiment, you can see the results for sure.

How Oxytetracycline helps in treating acne?

Oxytetracycline is classified as a tetracycline antibiotic and does not fall under the category of penicillin. Doctors prescribe Oxytetracycline 250 mg tablets to treat rosacea, acne and other kinds of skin infections. Oxytetracycline tablets are taken two times in a day or as prescribed by the physician. They should be taken appropriately to prevent oesophagus irritation. There are some foods which made the tablets less effective and hence should be consumed only one hour before your meals or exactly 2 hours after completing the meals.

Always make sure that you consult with your doctor before consuming any medicines. The physician can recommend you the right dosage according to the problem you are suffering from as well as considering your other health conditions.
