Let’s talk about sex. More specifically, sex and hair growth. Let’s face it – over the course of our lives we’re told a hundred things – sex is good, sex is bad. Sex will cause your hair to fall out. Wait, what?

No! Actually, sex won’t cause your hair to fall out. And in fact, just the opposite is true: sex helps hair to grow, and can help to prevent hair loss. Let’s explore sex and its benefits to your body, then we’ll look at how sex improves hair growth.

Sex and Hair Growth: The Myths

Most of us live in a society that accepts sexual activity as the norm, and thank goodness for that! But it wasn’t always this way. The more reserved generations before ours attached a stigma to sex. They were a bit more apprehensive about sexuality, and as a result, many myths were created.

Here’s one you’ve probably heard: first-time sex hurts women. This myth was perpetuated to deter young women from having sex. The truth is that sex is just as likely to hurt the first time as it will any other time. In other words, no sex should hurt, not even the first time.

Here’s one more. “Don’t masturbate! You’ll go blind and get hairy palms!” Obviously, this isn’t true. There are plenty of people who masturbate and can still see. But our more puritanical ancestors wanted to discourage the act, so the myth was born.

We mentioned that it’s been thought that sex causes hair loss, and that that’s a fallacy. The reasoning behind this myth was that the loss of seminal fluid in men would lead to a protein deficiency. That’s since been proven untrue; the amount of protein lost during ejaculation is negligible. It’s not enough to impact hair growth.

There may be a tiny bit of truth to that second myth, though. While it’s blatantly false that your palms will grow hair, it’s been shown that sex does help hair to grow. Not on your palms, but on your head. (No, not that head, silly. Your scalp. Come on.)

So how does sex help your hair? Well, it benefits your hair’s health in a lot of ways! Let’s look at a few of the many reasons why sex is just so darn good for you, then we’ll examine what makes sex good for hair health, too!

Now that our culture is a little more disposed to accept sex as a commonplace, natural and enjoyable activity, we see it everywhere. You can’t read an article on the internet or browse through a magazine without seeing mention of sex, or the benefits of sex.

But in case you’ve stayed away from this media, let’s take a minute for a refresher course. What are the benefits of sex, and how does it impact your health? More importantly, how does it affect your hair loss or hair growth?

First of all, sex provides many physiological benefits. That’s just a fancy way of saying “physical benefits.” Here are just a few:

  • Sexually active people are less likely to get sick. Their immune systems are boosted, and they’re less likely to contract viruses like the flu.
  • Sex improves bladder control. When you have sex, you’ll be strengthening your pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor is the group of muscles that holds up your bladder, uterus, rectum and vagina.
  • Sex can be counted in your exercise routine! Sex certainly won’t replace your regular workout, but you’ll burn about 5 to 8 calories per minute when you have sex.
  • It’s a natural painkiller. The hormones that are released when you orgasm will act as a natural pain blocker. So the next time your honey says, “but I have a headache,” remind her that sex can help!
  • Sex can prevent cancer. The risk for certain types of cancer are proven to be reduced by a sexually active lifestyle. The most frequently cited of these cancers in medical studies are prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in both men and women.

So you see, there are benefits to having sex. Besides, it’s fun, and a great way to connect with your partner. But what about hair? How does sex increase hair growth?

Sex Hormones and Hair Growth

Before we go into specifics about sex hormones, there are a few points we need to review. First of all, while some hair thinning can be blamed on your genes, there are many ways to counter this. A healthy vitamin supplement will help to promote hair growth. Proper diet and exercise will, too. Just because you have “bald genes” does not mean that all is lost.

Secondly, both men’s and women’s bodies have the hormones estrogen and testosterone. It’s usually assumed that testosterone is a “man’s hormone” and estrogen is only found in females. That’s untrue. Levels of each hormone are found in your body, regardless of sex.

So how does that relate to sex hormones and your hair? Well, it’s commonly thought that a sharp rise in testosterone can affect the efficacy of follicles. In other words, when your testosterone levels rise, you lose hair. There are many activities which can raise those levels. Working out is one. Sex is another.

So does that mean that sex will make you lose hair? Nope! Just the opposite, in fact. In both men and women, the levels of estrogen in the body will increase during sex. Estrogen will counter the effects of testosterone. It’s like a natural antidote to hormonal hair loss.

In short, your body is hardwired with hormones which can cause hair loss. But having sex can boost the hormones which will have just the reverse effect. Estrogen isn’t just a “women’s hormone.” Sex is a natural remedy!

Before You Have Sex…

Now you know that sex is good for both your body and for the health of your hair. But before you rush off to get between the sheets, there are a few risks to consider.

If you have concerns about your general health, be sure to talk with your doctor before you begin a sexual relationship. Your personal safety isn’t worth it; there are other ways you can help regrow your hair!

Change the Clocks Not Your Mood with These 5 Steps

As we prepare to switch the clocks and “fall back” this November 5, many of us may give up more than an hour of daylight. Set a sleep regimen.

It’s important to have weekends booked up with fun activities to keep the mind looking forward to fun events. “Social withdrawal is common in the winter when temperatures drop. Take turns hosting dinner events and get around people,” Hafeez encourages.

Study up!

Interested in learning a new skill? Use the wintertime to take seminars, attend workshops and commit to learning something new. When you engage the part of your brain responsible for learning you’re more inspired and alert. Garlic:

As an actress, producer & business woman, I am often on the go.  Weather it is on a formal trip or just a day trip, I need to have my beauty items handy to look & feel my best.  When we are on the road or going places where we may need to primp or completely do our makeup or freshen up, it is great to be prepared with a little beauty kit with all the essentials needed to look your best. The problem is taking everything you need in normal size containers you may need a suitcase. I have come up with a solution for this!

ON THE GO BEAUTY KIT

In today’s world, we want to look our best at all times with the least amount of effort. I have come up with essentials every girl should have on hand, so you will be able to look fresh whether you are on the go, staying overnight with your boyfriend or simply need a touch up. Stash these necessities in your purse, and you will always be prepared.

I love samples. It gives me a chance to try high-end products of all sorts. Since you receive ample amounts in small packaging, you can make a full-on beauty kit to haul along in your purse. This can be very effective, especially when you may be out somewhere away from your packed arsenal of at home products.

First, you need a case for your makeshift beauty kit. It should be something you can fit easily into your purse. I used a handy foldable holder that I had received from a business flight, but you can also get a makeup holder at the 99 cents store or any drugstore. Just make sure it is somewhat flat and can be comfortably stowed in your purse.

Next comes the fun part. You need to get the ingredients to put into your kit. Take a trip to the department store and get samples of makeup base that fits your color, creams, perfumes, liner, mascara, gloss or whatever useful items you can find. I like the samples that are in flat packets because they are easy to fit into the kit. The other alternative is to have the salesperson make samples for you. High-end lines usually have tiny plastic containers the size of a quarter with tightly sealed lids that will work for your kit as well. Gather all the essentials possible in one visit.

You can also gather the beauty freebies attained through larger makeup purchases. These items tend to be smaller and can be easily stored in your kit. Figure out when makeup lines are offering free gifts, and keep track any ‘points’ you’ve accumulated (Sephora’s point system gives spectacular yet small gifts). Sephora also sells small beauty items as you are standing in line which are great for your beauty kit as there is everything from small hairspray and mascara to pint size foundation.

Add a sample perfume of your choice. I recommend a black or brown eye pencil, earth tone shadow, sample mascara (I like ARMANI – and they are small!). If desired, throw in a couple of packages of Advil for those emergency days. Remember one feminine product (tampon), and put in a flat comb and hair band so that you can tie back your hair when you wash your face. A few Q tips and cotton balls are a must – store them in a tiny sealable baggy.

Pick up some shine eraser sheets (Elf Brand makes a great one). Get a pocket-sized toothpaste and

gotten these items in hotels as well as in airline kits, or you may already have a few saved. Also add a small dental floss or put two or three dental claws into the kit.

You can also add any samples or small packed products that you think you may need. Go to the section in the drug store where they have the samples. Other items to consider are razors, baby wipe samples, mouthwash, face wash, etc

I also like collecting hotel items because they can be used in your kit. When it is put together, it should supply you with what you need for one day or night out. It is great if you are spending the night at a friend’s house and want to appear fresh without bringing a suitcase.

You can keep your kit in your purse or car so you will be prepared to look, smell and feel your best at all times. This inexpensive condensed beauty kit is incredibly handy, and you will be glad you took the time to have it constantly within your reach. Knowing you are prepared to wow in any situation will give you a priceless piece of mind.

Keeping Your Kids from Infecting One Another With Pink Eye

If one of your children have woken up with eyes that have a milky film over the cornea, a thick crust in the corner of the eye, and the whites of their eyes are a bright pink hue you are going to need to move very rapidly. Pink eye is a contagious eye infection that can affect both children and adults. Since this infection can be transferred easily, you’ll need to do some cleaning and quarantining if you don’t want your entire household to suffer from the same affliction. The signs of pink eye manifest only a day or so after infection, so clean up any bedding that poses a risk and tell your children what they can do to get better faster. This is how you may be able to isolate your child who has pink eye and keep him or her from spreading the infection to other members of your family.

Prevent Pink Eye from Being Spread by Hand

Children have a habit of touching everything they see. They also need to be reminded to wash their hands regularly. Since pink eye is an infection that can be highly irritating, kids may rub their eyes repeatedly to soothe them. Clean your child’s bed linens every day so that there are fresh and infection free sheets and pillow cases for your child to use. This will aid your child in getting over his or her case of pink eye faster, and also limit the possibility of someone else coming down with this contagious eye disease.

Limiting the Interactions of Children with Pink Eye

Although you don’t want your child to be self-conscious about having pink eye, you do need to prevent them from spreading the disease. Children with contagious cases of pink eye need to be pulled out of school until they are cleared by their pediatricians. Cancel any play dates you have had planned and postpone parties until your child has completely recovered. The good news is that pink eye doesn’t take longer than one week to clear up, and in some instances, pink eye stops being contagious after a few days.

Caring for a child who has pink eye will mean doing lots of laundry. Keep your child’s eyes treated with medicated cream so that they don’t need antibiotics. Children get pink eye a lot and there are few households that have never been affected by the infection, so just take the necessary precautions to get rid of it quickly.
