5 Things That are Skin No-Nos

savvy_cali_logo_export-1

Pro Advice from Savvy Travelers Being that are our skin is the body’s largest organ, it stands to reason that there are things we should be doing to care for it each and every day. However, many of us go through our daily routines paying very little attention to our skin. In fact, there are a lot of things that we do that end up leading to clogged pores and a dull complexion. These skin “nonos” should be avoided to help keep skin looking and feeling great.

“Our skin is so delicate, yet we treat it as if it can put up with all of the mean things we do to it,” explains expert traveler Tina Aldatz, chief executive officer of cosmetic beauty wipe company Savvy Travelers. “Taking care of your skin can help keep you looking younger, feeling great, and loving what you see when you look in the mirror.”

Here are 5 things that are nonos that people often do to their skin:

  1. Not removing makeup before bed. Many people hit the sack without washing their face, and often leaving makeup on when they do it. According to the National Sleep Foundation, when you do this you can damage your skin. Going to bed with a dirty face leads to clogged pores, makeup tends to have free radicals held in it, which will lead to wrinkles. Keeping something like Take Offz facial cleansing and moisturizing wipes close by provides people with an easy and convenient way to always be able to quickly clean and moisturize their face before bed.
  2. Overlooking the importance of exfoliating. Many people tend to overlook the importance of getting their skin exfoliated. When you have it exfoliated, it removes the old, dead layer, so that younger and healthier skin can regenerate. Regularly doing this at home or having this done by getting regular facials is advised to get the best results.
  3. Getting too much sun exposure. According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Getting too much sun exposure to the skin can lead to skin cancer, as well as cause premature wrinkles. Protect the skin by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and seeking shade whenever possible.
  4. Not staying hydrated. According to the National Institutes of Health, the skin contains around 30 percent water. It’s this water that gives skin its plumpness, elasticity, and resiliency. If you are not staying well hydrated, your skin can lose those attributes, so be sure to drink up.
  5. Having dirty hands. We come in contact with many germs every day, especially on our hands. When those germ-filled hands touch your face, you are transferring them there. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and infections. Keep hands clean by frequently washing them with soap and water, or using anti-bacterial cleansing wipes, such as Klean Upz, when soap and water are not available.

“Between bad habits and germs, our skin can really take a hit,” added Aldatz. “It’s up to us to be proactive to make sure that we hold ourselves accountable in taking care of our skin, as well as being prepared. When we do those two things we will end up with skin that we love and loves us back.”

6 Features of the best GP tutors in Singapore

General-pepar1

GP is considered one of the toughest subjects for most Singapore student. Compared to English where students are expected to write short essays or stories, GP asks for a lot more from students. A student has to write formal, argumentative, and long essays from diverse topics.

Essays in science, history, culture, social happenings, arts, politics, geography, philosophy or economics have to be written creatively and critically. This means that a huge number of students fail the GP paper and they need tutors on the same. Despite the complexity and toughness of the examinations you have to choose tutors with desirable qualities such as:

1. Experience

A good tutor must have the right experience in the General paper. The credentials of the selected tutor should be very high and attractive. With the right skills and experience in teaching the same, you will be able to get the best tutoring possible.

You should note that a tutor having perfect scores isn’t all that is needed from a tutor. They should be experienced teachers. It would therefore be a better decision to choose a GP tutor experienced in the field.

2. Willingness to teach one student

Tutoring centers offering GP lessons tend to be packed. If you required personalized tutoring to deal with your weak points adequately, a tutor offering one on one tutoring is preferable.

Passing the test is hard and this means that you must have the best tutor offering dedicated training and attention to your individual needs comfortably. You will pay a little more but the quality of tutoring received is very high.

3. Patience

Your GP tutor and any other GP tutor engaged from reputable tuition agencies should be very patient. Learning speeds vary with students. This means that the tutor should understand the tutee’s weaknesses then work with you at your speed to ensure that you get the best out of the money spent as well as the time and input effort.

4. Quality content

The quality of the content offered should be high. Writing the best GP papers requires well-articulated ideas in acceptable formats and within the scope of the subject matter. The best tutor should be able to guide you into writing essays using right and the highest quality content. The tutor should be able to share their content booklets as well as tips and knowledgeable nuggets on the best strategies employed to create valuable and high scoring content.

5. Effective

Hiring a private home tutor is expensive and you should get good result or see improvement in your child’s results/ writing and comprehension in a short time. A good tutor should be able to work matters fast with you ensuring that you master the basics and essentials of the subject in the shortest possible time.

6. Easily relatable

This is a very important quality to be considered when seeking a tutor. Previous work reviews and testimonials will help you choose a good tutor. However, you should have a tutor who is easy to talk to and comfortably interact with. Pinpointing weak points is done easier when the tutor is easy to warm up to.

In conclusion, the best tutor for you or your child should have these qualities among others. These will assure you that you will get a good result at the end of the tutoring and the examinations. Also ensure that the tutor is within your neighborhood to prevent lateness or missed classes. Education is one of the best investments in life and the best tutors will, help you achieve your excellent education goals.

Obesity: Let’s talk about it!

Obesity

Did you know that obesity (adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and over) is considered a disease and morbid obese (adults with a BMI of 40 or more) is classified as a disability? More than 35% of adults in the United States are obese. I am here to help fight this disease. Here are three things you can start doing today! It is as easy as 1,2, 3.

1. Consume more fruits and vegetables. I know you have been hearing this since elementary school but now it is time for you to put this into action. It really is not as difficult as you think. Drink a smoothie made with fruit for breakfast, you can even throw in some spinach and it is delicious. Make a salad with green leafy vegetables, sliced strawberries and even toss in an orange for lunch, you just made a perfect summer salad. Make sure you have at least a cup of fruit or vegetables at each meal.

2. Decrease consumption of energy dense food. The definition of energy density is the amount of energy or calories in a particular weight of food and is generally presented as
the number of calories. Example of high density foods are cookies, chips and ice cream. These foods have lots of calories in a small portion. Eat foods that you can get more of with less calories: hint fruits and vegetables. Energy dense foods are commonly cheap and inexpensive. Remember, you are what you eat so don’t be cheap and easy!

3. Increase your physical activity.
Move that body! Increasing your physical activity will help you in many ways like improving your energy to helping you sleep better. The key is find something you love to do and do it! Schedule your activity. For example, I enjoy playing tennis so I schedule it into my week. It is an appointment and we all know that once something is in your schedule you have to follow through with it.

These 3 things are just a few simple things you can do that can help improve your life as well as help fight this epidemic that is sweeping our country. Let’s do our part and fight obesity together.

Beautiful Hair starts with a Lisse Luxe Hair Towel by Aquis

lisse-luxe-hair-towel-chevron_901102e5-b468-47f8-b554-f1c495b6c19f_grande

In all the years I have been washing my hair, I have never owned a hair towel designed specifically for hair. I use a regular towel, and it was not until I tried a Lisse Luxe Hair Towel by Aquis, that I realized what I was missing. The Lisse Luxe Hair Towel is the perfect length and thickness and wraps around your hair beautifully. The fabric is soft and wicks away moisture up to 5x better than cotton towels. The towel also allows you hair to dry fast with less friction which minimizes frizz. I love it because it is long, comfortable and lightweight so I can wrap up my hair and tuck it in the back easily without the bulkiness I get with a regular towel. The Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel is just the perfect hair towel for me, and I’m not letting it out of my sight.

There are also other unique features of the Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel;

You hair will dry faster for quicker blow drying;

The hair towel prevents frizz, split ends and hair breakage;

It absorbs water with woven fibers, and Aquis textiles have ultra-fine fiber channels for enhanced wicking

Remember to follow the care instructions before using your towel for best results and to keep your towel from getting damaged. Learn more about the Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel at aquis.com

Hollywood Glam Girl Patrika Darbo’s Exclusive IAGT Primetime Emmy Nomination Q & A

unnamed-1
It’s A Glam Thing’s longtime friend, Patrika Darbo is one of the most recognizable actresses on the small and large screens.  Everywhere she goes, fans know her from her various television appearances on such shows asIn The Big Bang Theory, Devious Maids, Dexter, Desperate Housewives and from her Emmy nominated role on Days of Our Lives. Film buffs know her from her stand-out performances in In The Line of Fire, Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil, Daddy’s Dyin’, (Who’s Got The Will?) and a host of other silver screen favorites.  Always reinventing herself as an actress, the veteran of over three decades worth of Tinsel Town trade is now nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her role on the internet series Acting Dead.

It’s A Glam Thing caught up with the talented red head in an exclusive Q & A!

IAGT: Congratulations on your Emmy nomination for Acting Dead.  Short Form is a brand new category for the Primetime Emmys.  Can you tell us a little bit about the category?

PATRIKA: Thank you.  This new category is for projects that are 15 minutes or less.  So if you have very little or no money, you can still create quality television.  The Short Form Category gives up and coming or established artists the opportunity to do great work and have a bigger audience.

IAGT: The title is curious.  Please tell us a little bit about the premise and story line for Acting Dead?

PATRIKA: Basically, if you look at a lot of television these days, it’s all about vampires, witches, zombies…the scary creatures in the supernatural genre.  Our show is about actors who actually become real zombies in order to get work in Hollywood!

IAGT: Your character, Margot Mullen is quite a “character”.  Tell us a little bit about her and are there any similarities between Margot and Patrika?

PATRIKA: Margot is a Travel/Talent agent who can get you on a show and get you a fabulous vacation all at the same time.  I think the similarities are that we both have big personalities and big hair!

IAGT: You are the only nominated actress in your category that is from an independent production.  Independent productions take a lot of blood, sweat and tears.  Please take the time to tell us a little bit about the other people who are behind this production.

PATRIKA: Yes, my nomination was the only nomination for an indie series, meaning no big network, website or production company was involved. It was created by and stars the fabulous Brian Beacock and Jillian Claire.  Brian produces it with Paul Nygro and Susan Bernhardt.  All the actors work deferred, which means we don’t get paid.  I am very fortunate to have been nominated, so this is my pay.  Hopefully, if I win, we will get enough notice to garner more producers with money to allow us to do more episodes.  The show is really fun and I think with a larger platform and a bit more financing we can get a much larger audience, all get paid, and entertain more people.

IAGT: You are no stranger to Emmy nominations.  You were nominated for a Daytime Emmy for your role as Nancy Wesley on the NBC daytime drama, Days of Our Lives.  Fans of this show miss you.  Do you think Nancy will ever return to Days?

PATRIKA: I am very blessed to have been nominated for a Daytime and now a Primetime Emmy.  These nominations come from your peers and I so appreciate their acknowledgement of my work.  I was invited back to Days and will start appearing in late November. It was like home and although there are some new faces, a lot of the fabulous actors I have worked with before are there for me to “play” with again.  Be sure to tune into NBC for a great storyline.

IAGT: While so many daytime actors seem to only work in the daytime genre, you continue to work in both primetime and feature films.  You recently worked on The Big Bang Theory, Devious Maids and The Middle.  Is there something about you or your technique that makes you more cast-able in acting arenas outside of daytime?

PATRIKA: I have had and am still having the opportunity to work in TV and film and I hope to be doing it for more years to come.  I am a character actress. I love what I do.  I think it is more difficult for a lot of daytime performers to do other genres because of the shooting schedules for daytime.  Don’t forget, on a soap you virtually shoot an entire script a day, 160 plus pages.  That’s a lot of words to memorize and time-wise doesn’t give an actor the opportunity to go audition for other projects.  Also, because daytime is so fast and everyday, getting a job that would take you away for a week or two is just not possible.  If time allowed, I’m sure you would see more of your favorite daytime performers in other venues.  In fact, some were in Acting Dead.

IAGT: Of all the big feature films that you have worked on, which film(s) was your favorite and why?

PATRIKA: My favorite film was Daddy’s Dyin’, (Who’s Got the Will?)  I originated the role on stage in a small 99 seat theater, got to go to the Fringe Festival to perform it in Edinburgh, Scotland and then reprised my role in the film starring opposite Beau Bridges.  I have to say that I get recognized the most to this day from the film InThe Line of Fire. There I got to work with John Malkovich and Clint Eastwood.  How lucky can one girl get?!

IAGT: If they call your name to go up and receive that Emmy award, what do you think you will say in your speech?

PATRIKA: It makes me nervous to think about it.  I am just so honored to be nominated and although I would love to win, I already feel like I have won.  If I do win I would thank my husband, Rolf who puts up with me on a regular basis, then the TV Academy and my peers who made it possible and then Brian and everyone involved with Acting Dead.  Truthfully, I’ll probably be blubbering and forget everyone and everything.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Skin Hydrated

striptwaxbar_3

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – (August 8, 2016) – Your skin is your largest organ, and many people start to pay attention to taking care of it only when a problem arises. Whether it’s acne, dry skin, blotches, or wrinkles, there are things that should be done regularly to take care of your skin, starting with making sure to keep it well hydrated. Keeping the skin hydrated will go a long way toward helping to have healthy-looking skin that glows and feels great.

“Skin needs to be well hydrated, and most people are just not doing enough to make sure that happens,” explains Katherine Goldman, celebrity esthetician/waxologist and owner of the Stript Wax Bar. “There are numerous things you can do to keep skin hydrated, so doing them regularly should be everyone’s mission.”

Hydration is important for having healthy, clear skin because dehydrated skin lacks water, making it appear dull and dry. While hydrated skin appears soft, it will not stay that way without having natural oils in balance to protect the skin and keep it hydrated by reducing evaporation and water loss. Here are 5 tips for keeping your skin hydrated:

  1. Drink water. Getting enough water is a good way to help with keeping skin hydrated from the inside out. Drink eight glasses of water per day so that your largest organ gets the fluids that it needs to stay soft and supple, and keep from being dry and rough.
  2. Moisturize properly. Dry skin lacks oil and needs to be moisturized.  Hydration can come externally through products that act as “humectants.”  Humectants are products that draw and attract water molecules to the skin. A wonderful ingredient to look for in products is hyaluronic acid.  This draws and attracts water molecules 1000 times its weight and infuses it into the skin. Moisturizing the skin typically comes in the form of a cream, serum, or lotion and adds needed moisture, vitamins, oils and nutrients to the skin.
  3. Add fruits and herbs. Foods can make a difference in the amount of moisture that gets into the skin. Add some fruits and herbs to your water for an added hydration boost, and a bit of flavor. Try such options as lemon and rosemary or strawberry, mint, and cucumber.
  4. Refresh the skin. One of the best ways to hydrate your skin topically is to use a product designed to hydrate. Typically these come in the form of a serum or a mist, such as the one carried by Stript Wax Bar, called the Dermaquest Essential B5 Hydrating Serum.  Another way to hydrate is to make a mask at home using the natural humectants honey, cucumber and aloe.  Combine 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 teaspoons of aloe vera gel.  Mix together and add a teaspoon of crushed cucumber and apply to the face for 10 minutes. Some affordable products to look for in the drugstore are alcohol-free rose petal infused witch hazel toner with aloe.  This is a great and inexpensive product to hydrate and refresh the skin. You can also look for rosewater and use as a spritz to hydrate.
  5. Make it a priority. All the tips in the world for having ageless skin that is healthy and hydrated won’t do you any good if you are not committed to making it happen. It’s important to make taking care of your skin a high priority and stick to what works to keep it hydrated, healthy, and looking great.

“Having skin that looks healthy and doesn’t age as fast is absolutely possible,” added Goldman. “You have to want to take care of it, making sure to especially keep it well hydrated. If your skin is well hydrated it will look and feel great. It’s a small effort that really pays off.”
