My interview with Emmy nominated celebrity makeup artist and creator of Senna Cosmetics, Eugenia Weston !

This year while covering The MAKEUP SHOW-Chicago for It’s A Glam Thing, I not only had the pleasure of meeting the Emmy nominated celebrity makeup artist and founder of Senna Cosmetics, Eugenia Weston, but had an opportunity to have Ms.Weston do a makeover on me.

Eugenia is one of the most gracious, soft spoken, congenial women I’ve met, and by the time I left the Senna booth, looking better than I have in ages, Eugenia had agreed to do an interview with me. As you can imagine, I was ecstatic the rest of the day! This was a dream come true!

Eugenia Weston is the consummate makeup artist who is not only able to visualize an idea for a makeup product, have the creativity to develop that product, but ultimately create the finished product that is able to be used and enjoyed by all!

VICKI:
Eugenia, what inspired you to follow an artistic career in makeup artistry and product development?   

EUGENIA:
Do you believe in destiny? I knew that I was literally born to do makeup. My inspirations have always come from fashion, cinema, theatre, photography and art. I’ve always been intrigued with faces.

I developed products out of need. Before Senna, I started doing freelance makeup and the products and colors available were very limited. I had a definite vision of beauty and couldn’t find the right cosmetics to fulfill my vision. I would mix and blend colors from many established store brands to create the shades that defined what is still my signature style today, clean and beautiful makeup. My clients loved the natural looks I created with these colors and requested them. I explained that I would have to mix them up, and they said, “I want them.”. So I began to create colors and products in my kitchen for my customers.

VICKI:
That certainly was destiny, Eugenia! At what point did you experience that “ah-ha” feeling and know that you and your career were moving in the direction you had hoped for?

EUGENIA:
My career and brand has evolved over the years from my passion for making up faces. I knew that I would never do anything else in my life. Creating Senna Cosmetics was my “ah-ha” moment!

VICKI:
Your list of celebrity clients in both film and television is quite remarkable. Was there a memorable “moment” while working with one these “personalities” that you’d like to share with us?

EUGENIA:
Working with Bette Midler on the film Down and Out in Beverly Hills (Disney, 1986) enabled me to learn more about the film industry. I had only done print and stage work prior. Bette wanted me to be her makeup artist on all of her films. She arranged for me to be trained by legendary film makeup men, as I was not familiar with this genre. I am forever grateful.

VICKI:
Your Face Sculpting Kit has honestly changed my whole look! It’s different than anything I’ve ever experienced, and has cut my makeup time in half. Why does it have such a positive impact on a person’s face?

EUGENIA:
Balance and proportion creates beauty. Highlighting and shading are essential in achieving a more perfect facial structure. There’s nothing like Senna’s Face Sculpting Kit on the market. I learned this technique of face contouring when being mentored by the legendary film makeup artists Bob Mills and Bob Schiffer. The formula never streaks, blends easily and melds into the skin.

It’s really an outstanding product! You also are very well known for your remarkable “Form A Brow Kit®” !  Why do most of us have such frustrations with our eyebrows, and what was your motivation to create this kit?

EUGENIA:
Most women are frustrated with their brows because they’re not artists and can’t figure out the what, where and how. Working with so many women in my makeup and brow studios, I come up with solutions to address these issues and brows were a big one. I created Form-A-Brow® Stencil Kit out of a need. I would hand cut every stencil myself for each client, over 600! It became such a hit we put them into production in the early 1990’s and a new beauty category was born.

VICKI:
What are some of your thoughts regarding makeup application that women need to be aware of as they go through the different stages and ages in their lifetime?

EUGENIA:
There are so many great products on the market today, so education is vital. I suggest going to an expert that is knowledgeable and understands these different stages. Professional makeup artists need to key into the life styles of their client in order to make the proper suggestions.
Must have tips:
Use eyeliner in the upper water line to make lashes look fuller. Use anti-aging and moisturizing facial serums plus a SPF30 daily to nourish and protect skin. Use a foundation primer under makeup to smooth skin. Because brows fade with age, fill in with powder color, pencils or tinted brow gels to create definition.

VICKI:
Please tell us about your involvement in the American Cancer Society’s “Look good, Feel Better” program.

EUGENIA: 
Makeup is a very healing experience. The American Cancer Society’s ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ program caught my attention because I love helping women look better which makes them feel better. I wanted to volunteer and give back with one on one pampering and uplift their spirits since they are going through such a traumatic period in their lives. Wearing makeup really helps them face the world in a normal manner. Most of the women never had a makeup lesson. They always leave so happy.

VICKI:
Would you share some hints for summer looks that our readers will enjoy from your new Summer 2013 Sunglow Collection?

Considering a cosmetic procedure? The latest ASDS survey shows dermatologists are the physician of choice!

I believe that this day in age most of us have considered the possibility of having a cosmetic procedure. After all, there are a number of treatments and procedures now available that are non-invasive, and require very little, if any, downtime.

The blind “online” ASDS consumer survey was actually the “first-ever” administrated by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), with regard to Cosmetic Dermatogic Procedures ! It was carried out earlier this year via the web based Zoom Panel Service.

Consumers were asked to give their views on “cosmetic treatments in general” and then rate “10 particular procedures, from wrinkle-relaxing injections and body sculpting to laser hair removal.”

The results:
Quoting the survey data,“While 6.4 percent of those surveyed previously had a cosmetic treatment, nearly 30 percent said they were considering a procedure. When asked what provider they chose, consumers not only picked dermatologists as the physician of choice for nine of the 10 procedures, but also said dermatologic surgeons are their dermatologist of choice in nine of the 10 categories.”

That’s quite a positive statement that expresses a lot of confidence in the dermatologic surgeons. It comes as no surprise after reading this quote from ASDS President, Timothy C. Flynn, M.D.stating,“Board certification tells potential patients that a doctor is highly trained and most qualified to care for their skin health and beauty needs!” “That training and qualifications are key reasons consumers choose dermatologic surgeons.”

Those who took the survey seemed to agree, and felt that dermatologists had more of an impact on consumers and “their” determination to have a cosmetic procedure than that of their “friends, physician referrals, or 11 other choices!” The area of Board Certification in which a doctor excelled was the most important consideration when considering a cosmetic procedure. It even won out over “the cost, physician referrals, and eight other choices!”

What was the consumer’s objective for looking into a cosmetic treatment?
Here’s the “top” reasons they mentioned :
“Looking as young as I feel for my age.”
• “Appearing more attractive.”
• “Feeling more confident!”

Those are very realistic and reasonable expectations when seeking procedures such as this.

What were their concerns?
• Over 80 percent expressed that their weight was the cosmetic condition that “bothered” them the most.
Followed by:
Lines and wrinkles around the eyes (63 percent)
• Skin texture and/or discoloration (62 percent)
• Sagging facial skin (61 percent)
• Excess fat under the chin (60 percent)
• Lines, wrinkles and/or folds in the mid-face around the cheeks and mouth (60 percent)

What procedures were these consumers looking into?
According to the survey:
Ultrasound
• laser
• Light and radio frequency treatments for wrinkles
• Laser and light treatments to reduce facial redness, improve skin tone or improve scars
• Body sculpting

“Thanks to advances in cosmetic surgery – many spearheaded by dermatologic surgeons, noted Dr.Flynn, dozens of cosmetic treatment options are available to consumers today,”

In conclusion, these consumers gave “highest overall satisfaction rates” to cosmetic procedures performed by dermatologists more often than by other practitioners!
Examples being:
Injectable wrinkle treatments (92%)
• Injectable filler treatments (92 percent).

Dr. Flynn remarked that,“Patients rightfully demand satisfaction, and dermatologic surgeons provide that with their training and expertise. With these procedures being performed by so many dermatologic surgeons,it’s no surprise that they have the highest patient satisfaction rates. We are the skin experts.

I received three Nurisha™ products to try:
• The “New” Purifying Facial Cleanser Treatment
• The “New” Peptide Concentrate Eye Gel
and…
• The “New” Moisturizing Facial Treatment

Before I share my experience with the trio of products from Nurisha™ Naturals that I used… I must say that after using Nurisha™ a couple of days, I realized that these three products delivered the “feel” that I’m used to on my skin, to attain a sufficiently cleansed and hydrated face, neck, and firmer look to my eye area! That’s impressive for me, being person who has a tendency to use a number of products to care for my skin! Oh… there are additional products I’ll purchase on Nurisha™ Naturals website, but these three products really did the trick!

First, I cleaned my face with the Purifying Facial Cleanser !

Talk about versatility, with the aloe vera which is one of my favorite healing ingredients, and chamomile , known for it’s calming value, Purifying Cleanser was so comfortable and cooling on my skin.

In addition, this Purifying Cleanser has a blend of botanicals that really stimulate your skin as it thoroughly cleans, and yes …removes your makeup, too!

I don’t have dry skin, but it does get dehydrated, and this cleanser really felt good, and did not leave my face feeling tight or dry… just clean!! (Price:$32.00)

Next, I used the Peptide Concentrate Eye Gel.

The information from Nurisha™ said it’s benefit was to “smooth, soothe, and tighten”! Those are three priorities I have for an eye care product! Once again I felt very confident about using this Eye Gel . It also contains aloe vera , which helps with skin inflammation, and keeps the delicate area around your eye area hydrated. One thing I learned from Nurisha’s product information that I didn’t know about aloe vera was that “it contains antimicrobial properties that kill bacteria.” With all of the cosmetics, and mascara that we use around our eye area, that benefit is a great preventative measure !

Another great ingredient in the Eye Gel is Hyaluronic Acid. It’s another “fave” ingredient of mine, and over the years I’ve used and liked it for it’s ability to keep moisture within the skin! Nurisha™ also makes note of Hyaluronic Acid’s “anti-aging qualities that also restores elasticity and firmness” to the skin!

Two other important ingredients in the Peptide Concentrate Eye Gel are “periwinkle and Licorice.” Together they “help reduce puffiness, those annoying dark circles, and diminish wrinkling around the eye area” which is crucial if you want to maintain a youthful appearance! (Price:$45.00)

The Moisturizing Facial Treatment is another example of Nurisha’s useful advantages for all skin types! The primary natural ingredients consist of jojoba which is non-comedogenic.
