Spring Cleaning Can Be a Breeze! Get Your Home Organized, Clean and Ready for Spring

unnamed-9

Step 1: Get organized and have the right tools

Have a plan. Make a realistic list of what you want to accomplish and stick to it. Also, make sure you have what you need in terms of equipment before you start: vacuum with extra bags, cleaning products, cloths, gas for the lawn mower, sharpened clippers for the hedges… whatever is on your list of things to tackle, make a secondary list of the tools you will need to get the job done. There’s nothing more distracting than having to stop everything to make a trip to the local supply store. Start with that, armed with your to do list, and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and delay.

Step 2: Start with decluttering

There are two things that contribute to clutter. Number one is the fact that we often don’t put things in the right place — which is because we often don’t have a ‘right place’ for it. Two, we have too much stuff. This becomes patently obvious when you discover boxes in the basement of things that you never unpacked, from two moves ago!

There are four areas of the house that are typical clutter zones:

•    Kid bedrooms

•    Mud rooms or entranceways

•    Dining room

•    Garage or sheds

For the kids bedrooms, see the tips below on how to ‘get everyone involved’. The mud room and garage are places where everyone tends to drop things on their way to another part of the house. So go back to the plan in Step 1 and figure out where everything is going to go. If everything has a place and everyone knows what those homes are, in time, fewer things will get dropped in the middle of the room.

You can add storage items to your mudroom or entranceway to make even the smallest space more efficient: Baskets for mittens and hats, racks for shoes and boots, hooks for bags. The garage or shed would benefit from the same treatment: hooks for shovels and rakes, metal storage racks with buckets for odds and ends.

As to the dining room? Make a new rule: anyone who dumps stuff on the dining table will find it in the garbage in short order (if it’s homework, you may just want to hide it away for a day or two!) The whole family will learn quickly enough!

Step 3: Get everyone involved

Speaking of learning, there are kids out there (somewhere) who are super efficient and keep their toys properly organized in color coded boxes, neatly stacked in the playroom. Okay… now back to reality. No kids do that, but they can learn to. They can learn that every toy, book and article of clothing has a home and that home is not the living room sofa.

If your kids are little, print a picture of whatever needs to go in which box, shelf or basket and tape it to the front of the receptacle, so they learn where everything goes. Cooperation is best achieved with a little incentive: the good stuff like video games or tablet time need to be dependent on having a tidy room and the prompt removal of toys from the common areas at the end of a day of playing…

Are you living with a tiny hoarder? It might be time for some ninja stealth action when they are out of the house and clear some of the toys from their rooms. Tip? Don’t throw the toys out right away. Store them in the basement or garage in a plain box for a month before tossing them, just in case it turns out you tossed out something they had their hearts set on keeping. Don’t worry: you’ll hear about it soon enough!

Step 4: Big items get done first

The sense of achievement you’ll feel if you get a few of the big things out of the way make the rest of the smaller tasks easier.

Like what?

•    Flipping and cleaning the mattresses (Tip: Throw some baking soda on your mattress and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it of. It will neutralize any odors. You can also drag it outside for some sunlight, which has the same effect, but it’s not always a practical option!)

•    Steam cleaning the carpets (Need an easy fix for dents made by heavy furniture in the carpet fibers? Put an ice cube in each dent and let it melt. When it has melted and the area is dampened, take a cloth and blot the excess water and iron the area, again with a towel over top. Once the area is dry, you’ll be able to fluff up your carpet fibers so they look as good as new!)

•    Emptying and cleaning out the refrigerator or freezer

Once some of these bigger chores are done, reorganizing the junk drawer in the kitchen won’t seem daunting at all.

Step 5: Inside And out

Don’t forget to look beyond the walls of the house to the garden areas. Stand on the sidewalk or in front of your house and look at it: does it look like you could put it on the market to sell it? No? Time to add to the list from Step 1. Whether it’s a coat of fresh paint or a spray wash, fixing shutters or hanging baskets, trimming the bushes or raking up the leaves from last fall, there’s always plenty to do outside. This is another great area to get the kids involved, since they benefit from a breath of fresh air too! No job seems quite as bad with the sun shining on your head!

Hynt Beauty presents another great recipe from Abby Phon

Chocolate Covered Organic Raw Matcha Macaroons

Gluten-free & Vegan

Ingredients

1 cup organic raw walnuts
2 cups organic unsweetened finely shredded coconut
2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
1/3 cup organic coconut nectar
1 ½ tbsp organic matcha green tea powder
1 tsp organic vanilla extract
1 pinch sea salt

Directions

Using a small ice cream scoop or melon baller, put balls onto a Silpat sheet or parchment paper on a cookie sheet.

Optional: run the mixture through the food processor again to ensure everything is well mixed, and green.

Mix all the ingredients together in a medium sized mixing bowl.

In a food processor pulse nuts until chopped very fine. Don’t over-blend, or you’ll get walnut butter!

Enjoy as is (they’re delicious moist!) or dry them out in the oven.

To oven dry them out: Put them in the oven on the lowest setting for a few minutes just to remove some of the moisture. For these to be “raw” you need an oven that can go down to 115 degrees F for 1 to 2 hours. You don’t want to actually cook them.

Cook’s note: My oven only went down to 170F, so I baked them at 170F for about 5 minutes, turned off the oven with the tray still inside, and let everything cool back to room temperature. They were fantastic!

Homemade Ganache – optional
Gluten Free & Vegan
Ingredients

¼ cup organic coconut oil, melted
¼ cup cacao powder
2-4 tbsp organic coconut nectar or maple syrup

Directions

On stove top over low heat, whisk all ingredients together.

Continue mixing until smooth and well-combined.

Dip macaroons, and transfer to wire rack to cool.

Get The Look: Paris Jackson at the 2017 Grammy’s

unnamed-9

Who: Paris Jackson at the 2017 Grammy Awards

The Look: Cool girl glam

The Inspiration:  Rimmel London Make-up Artist Jo Baker wanted to create a careful balance between Paris Jackson’s outfit and makeup. Paris wore a dazzling disco inspired Balmain jumpsuit in an array of pastel hues, with thigh high slits up each leg and a plunging neckline – so Jo opted to keep her makeup smooth and natural with subtle details.

How to Get the Look:

Skin

Jo wanted Paris’ skin to look flawless and healthy. After dotting Rimmel London Match Perfection Concealer around her eyes, nose and mouth, Jo then applied a sheer coat of Rimmel London InstaFlawless Skin Tint to add a natural looking glow with smooth creamy finish. The result is a balanced, soft and radiant glow. InstaFlawless Skin Tint is perfect for this kind of event – it acts as a primer, smoothing the texture of the skin so that it sits pretty while also providing a much needed SPF15 for that mid-day LA heat!

Cheeks

Paris and Jo both love face sculpting! Jo used a contour that has a soft de-focusing finish so that when the camera light hits, it looks like beautiful skin and not a harsh stripy line. To create a subtle and undetectable sculpted look, Jo used a medium sized blush brush to apply Rimmel London Insta Flawless Matte Setting Powder to help apply an even contour and sculpt effect. Then, using her favorite Rimmel London Kate Sculpting & Highlighting Kit in Golden Sands, she applied smooth strokes of the contour shade from the sides of her mouth all the way up towards the top of her ears.

Eyes Jo loves Paris’ intense ice-blue eyes. So without hesitation, they opted for a natural and clean eyelid and concentrated on Paris’ lashes. She applied a generous amount of Rimmel London Scandaleyes Mascara for a long lasting mega volume effect. This mascara and applicator brush gives lashes a curl by pushing them up with each stroke.

Brows

Jo combed through her brows and added several strokes of Rimmel LondonProfessional Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown to fill in any gaps and give her strong, yet natural brows with a sharp angular look. Using the nifty brow comb, Jo repeated the process until her brows were the desired shape and fullness. The key to Paris’ brows are the razor tight line creating the arch, so Jo used her concealer brush with the leftover concealer on it to refine and define the edges to make sure it looked clean and dramatic.

Lips

To finish off the look, Jo lined her lips using Rimmel London Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner in Innocent which is a soft nude beige tone which even has a soft sheen to it. She kept it simple with her new favorite Rimmel London The Only 1 Matte in Trendsetter which is the perfect blend of warm and cool tones. For that perfect graceless nude that glides on creamy and feels super comfortable on the lip as well.

Where to Find Them: Rimmel London products are available at chain drug stores and mass retailers nationwide. Visit www.RimmelLondon.com for store locations and to try the newest products with Rimmel London’s exclusive Virtual Makeup Tool.

My Skin & Co. Exfoliating Scrub is a definite “must add” product for your skin

unnamed

If you’re heading out on Spring Break in the next few weeks, the My Skin & Co. Exfoliating Scrub is a definite must add product for your skin and shaving prep routine. The scrub comes out as a white, shave- cream like formula infused with fine, granular exfoliating beads so that it is gentle enough to use on your face or sensitive skin, but can also be used on legs and other areas as well. The formula is not as coarse as most typical salt scrub exfoliators, but it’s one of the most effective exfoliators I’ve used.

The application is effortless, clean, and a little can go a long way. Infused with organic tea tree oil and white and black willow bark extract, the scrub invigorates the skin as it deep cleans pores, polishes away dullness, and helps eradicate ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and inflammation. This is a great all- around product for both girls and guys, and can be used on the face or body (bikini, under arms, legs, etc).

The results are amazingly smooth and fresh feeling, and it preps skin for an incredibly close shave. The first time I used the Exfoliating Scrub before shaving, I could not believe how smooth my legs were- they almost felt like they had been waxed (minus the pain, price, and effort)!

The Exfoliating Scrub is $18.95 and available online via www.gomyskin.com.

Clyde Haygood styles Demi Lovato for the 2017 Grammys

unnamed-10
At Sunday night’s 59th Annual Grammy Awards, Demi Lovato’s hair made a sultry statement.
Inspiration: Clyde was inspired by Demi’s sexy crocheted Julien McDonald gown to create long, loose mermaid waves

Step-by-step tips on how to recreate her look:

  • To start, apply a golf ball sized amount of John Frieda Frizz Ease  Dream Curls Air-Dry Waves Styling Foam section to section, from root to tip, throughout wet hair
  • For longer hair like Demi’s, apply product liberally to ensure hair is completely saturated with the foam
  • Allow hair to air dry–in this case, during the duration of makeup application–gently scrunching pieces during the drying process
  • Once dry, take a 3/4 inch curling iron and bend strategic pieces throughout the hair, enhancing and defining the waves but pulling them loose as they cool for an elongated finish
  • To add sheen and the appearance of a “wet” finish, pump two palm-fulls of John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Six Effects + Serum and work it through hair, leaving hair with a beautiful shiny finish to glisten under the lights on the red carpet and the stage

Marcia Hamilton styles Tinashe for the 2017 Grammys

unnamed-15
At Sunday night’s Grammys red carpet, Tinashe’s hair says she is bold and unapologetic.
Inspiration: As Tinashe usually wears her hair down to perform, Marcia wanted something off her face and her shoulders for the red carpet–but edgier than the usual braid.

Step-by-step tips on how to recreate her look:

  • To prep below blowing dry, apply a cocktail of  John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Six Effects +  Serum  and John Frieda Frizz Ease Straight Fixation Styling Creme to wet hair
  • Blow dry hair straight almost entirely with a paddle brush, but concentrate on lifting hair at the roots but blowdrying with a round boar-bristly brush
  • If necessary, use a flatiron to give hair an even sleeker look, with exception of any face framing pieces
  • Pin two curls on either side of the head and let them set
  • Take a triangular piece of hair in the center of the back of the head, separate into two pieces and knot
  • Continue to pull pieces of hair from the sides of the head and knot in the back, creating a series of knots from the center of the head down the neck
  • After all hair as been gathered and knotted, twirl the bottom of the hair, twist it up and pin in the back
  • Release the pinned curls in the front of the head, brush them out, and finish by applying a light amount of John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch-Up Styling Creme
