HOW TO AVOID HOLIDAY HEARTBURN AS EXPLAINED BY AN INTERNIST AND GASTROENTEROLOGIST

 www.niketsonpal.com

Even if you’re not a “foodie” most people look forward to indulging in the culinary delights of holiday time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. This  means that even people who are typically disciplined eat too much in one evening, eat rapidly, imbibe amounts of alcohol they are unaccustomed to, and consume foods that may not be part of their regular diet because “tis the season.”  While nobody likes a medical grinch, there are ways to have gastronomic fun without paying the price with holiday heartburn. Dr. Niket Sonpal is an internist and gastroenterologist at Touro College of Medicine.  He shares his tips for having your holiday cake and eating it too.

Heartburn happens when stomach acid flows backward into the esophagus. It can also go by two names: GER (gastroesophageal reflux) or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). GER is also known as acid indigestion, happening only once in a while. GERD is chronic heartburn that can lead to esophageal cancer if left untreated.

Here are some tips for avoiding holiday heartburn

Eat light turkey, not dark

High-fat food can spell trouble if you’re prone to heartburn, so do yourself a favor and skip the skin when it comes to turkey time. Your best bet is to eat turkey breast and avoid oilier dark meat. The same goes for gravy. If it’s not fat free, it may be smarter to skip this dish.

Choose baked, not mashed

If you have chronic heartburn, you don’t have to give up your favorite foods. You just have to choose wisely to save yourself some pain later on. For example, mashed potatoes can trigger heartburn, but baked potatoes may not. When it comes to dairy products, the less fat the better.  Limit butter and avoid sour cream.

Choose multigrain rolls or bread

When choosing grain-based food for the holiday, you can’t go wrong with multigrain bread or rolls. Corn bread and white bread are good choices too,if you want to avoid heartburn.

One side dish that should be strictly for the kids, however, is macaroni and cheese. This is one of those dishes known to trigger acid reflux, according to the National Heartburn Alliance.

Selecting a salad

Salads are good news for those with chronic heartburn or GERD—if you have the right salad dressing and ingredients, that is. High-fat foods are a known trigger for acid reflux, so the National Heartburn Alliance recommends avoiding creamy salad dressings, as well as oil and vinegar. Your best bet is a low-fat salad dressing, and avoid tomatoes, raw onions, and other acid-aggravating ingredients. (Want fruit in your salad? Choose apples, not oranges, if you want to avoid heartburn.)

Avoid foods that cause heartburn.

People who suffer from heartburn often know the trigger foods that cause symptoms. Common foods include chocolates, caffeine and greasy foods. These foods relax the lower esophagus sphincter muscle, when this muscle is relaxed, the food will go back up and cause heartburn. Other foods that can trigger heartburn include acidic foods such as citrus fruits or carbonated beverages. This means avoid Champagne!

Skip Mint Desserts

Candy canes and chocolate mint desserts are best left for others. These dangerous holiday delectables are notorious for helping acid reflux on its way.

Eat more ginger

Ginger is one ingredient that can help ease heartburn, if you don’t get too much of it. (More than 2 to 4 grams per day can actually cause heartburn.)

Ginger is a natural match for root vegetable dishes commonly served during the holidays. Heartburn-friendly vegetables include carrots, cabbage, peas, broccoli, and green beans

Linger Over Your Food

Take the time to eat slowly and enjoy your food. Rushing through your meal or chewing with your mouth open can increase your chances of indigestion or heartburn. Linger over your food and allow yourself to feel full by giving your food time to digest.

 Limit Alcoholic Beverages

Have to have that holiday egg nog? Limit it to one glass. This festive beverage can do double the damage. Not only does it contain alcohol that irritates your stomach but it contains the added dose of diary that can cause bloating and gas.

Cut yourself off.

After-hours holiday parties can keep you snacking all night, but eating too close to bedtime can make acid reflux worse. Stop eating and drinking (water included) three hours before bedtime.

Ditch the post-meal nap:

Sleeping right after eating can increase GERD symptoms. Instead of falling asleep, try going for a walk.

4 Pro Tips to Achieve the Best Holiday-Season Look

Have you ever wondered where the ugly Christmas sweater craze originated and why everyone chooses to look, well, rather silly?

According to the aptly named Ugly Christmas Sweater Book, the rise of ugly sweaters started in the late 1980s, around the same time when Chevy Chase played the iconic role of Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. But the ugly sweater party craze saw its rapid climb around 2001 and hasn’t slowed down since.

Then again, depending on who you ask, the ugly sweater Christmas craze should be put to rest in favor of gorgeous seasonal fashion that people are proud to wear. If you want to retire those ugly sweaters and reach for something more flattering, follow these pro tips for a fashion-forward holiday.

1. Reach for That Little Black Dress

The classic little black dress is always a must-have for any seasonal wardrobe. It’s versatile, flattering and offers plenty of flexibility throughout the holiday season. Dress it up with stunning jewelry and fabulous shoes, or keep it simple with an essential bangle bracelet and earrings. And if you secretly love all the holiday fanfare and ugly Christmas sweater, add a fun scarf or wrap depicting a festive seasonal motif.

2. Go Glam with Velvet

There may be no better excuse to pull out the velvet and drape yourself in luxury than the holiday season. Choose from black or dark blue, or go bold with bright red and grab some shoes to match. Wearing velvet is also a fun way to make a big entrance at your next holiday party, where all eyes are bound to be on you. But if you’re not feeling head-to-toe velvet, opt for velvet shoes and a handbag to add some style to your holiday outfit.

3. Drape Yourself in Jewelry

If you’re not sure what to wear or don’t want to invest in a new dress, celebrate the season with your best jewelry for a glittery evening on the town. The holidays are the time to shine, and you can use this season as an excuse to invest in new signature pieces for your collection.

Look for long, draping necklaces that can jazz up the little black dress, sparkling earrings to grab some attention from friends and family, and oversized cocktail rings for a festive touch. The best part about jewelry is that you can add more to make a statement or tone it down to keep the focus on simple elegance.

4. Layer for Warmth and Style

With a mix of soft, cashmere scarves and cardigans, wearing layers is an easy way to create a stunning look for the holidays. Plus, you simultaneously end up looking great and staying warm without compromising your signature look. Then again, if you live in a more temperate climate, you can still layer your way to achieve that upscale holiday look.

Just add a lightweight sweater or wrap to dress up your outfit. Layers also let you course correct your wardrobe as the night wears on. After an upscale dinner, you can hop over to a party and quickly shed your layers for a more basic look to join a casual crowd.

Be as Creative as You Want

With the right pieces, from the little black dress to the right jewelry, holiday fashion can be fun and flexible for just about anyone. This holiday season, let your creativity dictate your signature fashion. Just make sure to donate those ugly holiday sweaters to make room for your new style.

Utica NY Laser Hair Removal and It’s Benefits for Beauty

Is hairless more attractive? Historically, women have always been required to have hairless skin on their bodies, and that includes smooth skin in parts such as the underarms, face, and, according to recent trends, in the bikini area. A survey conducted among men shows that 46% have a preference for the women going completely bare down there.

How important is manscaping down there? Thirty percent of men say that hair down there is a deal-breaker. Ouch! To make the sexes even, however, men need to trim their hair too. Chest hair, underarm hair, and hair in the abdomen need to go.

Women surveyed in a study find hairless men’s bodies more attractive. Recent trends have settled the attractiveness of hairless bodies, so how does one go about getting rid of unwanted hair to achieve flawless, smooth skin? Plucking is painful, and shaving tears the skin and leaves ugly hair follicles.

Luckily, laser hair removal is an alternative. Click here for clinics which are readily accessible and offer reliable and high-quality services. Below are just some of the benefits of laser hair removal:

  1. Removing hair with a laser is more precise

How does hair removal lasers work? Lasers use light to destroy the hair. Light is concentrated on the hair for a few seconds. The hair absorbs the light, thus destroying it, roots, and all so it won’t come back. If you have coarse hair on your chin, underarm and legs, the precision of laser can target these unwanted hairs and get rid of them completely.

You can get rid of unwanted hair speedily with laser

People are always in a hurry, and if you have a tight schedule, a laser hair removal session will not take up much of your time. A laser can remove hair in small areas in a matter of seconds. For larger areas such as the chest and legs, the procedure may take up to an hour.

  1. Laser hair removal ensures results

With other methods of hair removal, the hair comes back. Maintaining a hairless body with other procedures can be time-consuming and costly. Think of the amount you have to spend on regular waxing. Shaving is not foolproof and leaves ugly coarse hair in the skin’s pores. Plus, you will feel new hair growing back in a matter of days or weeks. These methods are not designed to induce hair loss permanently, unlike laser hair treatments.

  1. Most laser hair removal machines are now pain-free

Laser hair removal is pain-free. The technology for hair removal is so sophisticated that most laser hair removal machines have a cooling mechanism. Laser uses light, and light is transformed into heat that destroys the hair and its follicles. This process can cause sharp pain, but the cooling mechanism mitigates the pain caused by the heat. The machine gives blasts of cooling air constantly while the laser performs its work so you can have hair removal sessions comfortably and without pain.

  1. Laser hair removal means less skin irritation

What is worse than coarse hair would be an ingrown hair. Laser hair treatments can specifically target hairs that are ingrown and remove it. You need several sessions to obliterate hair using laser hair removal methods. If your hair does grow back again, it comes back thinner and straighter. Hair that grows straight means less irritation, so you won’t have just smoother looking skin. You will also feel better.

  1. You can be fuzz-free while having your laser hair removal

Unlike plucking and waxing, you need the hair to grow to remove it. The method of waxing needs wax to stick to the hair and remove it in one tug. Plucking also requires visible hair. With these methods, you have to wait for days and deal with fuzzy ugly hair before you can get rid of it. If you choose the laser method, you can go completely shaved and go to the clinic with no worries that your hair won’t be properly removed. Laser is so precise that it can target the hair follicle itself.

  1. Laser hair removal has minimal side effects

Other hair removal methods cause a lot of suffering. Waxing entails that you have a high tolerance for pain while shaving can leave you with uneven hair and ugly nicks and cuts. Plucking only allows you to remove hair in small areas and is also extremely painful. The only side effect of laser would be redness, which disappears after a few hours. You can apply a soothing aloe vera lotion or gel after if you need to calm your skin. Other procedures leave an aftermath of its effects on your skin in the form of bumps, cuts, and sometimes a chicken skin appearance. Laser hair removal, on the other hand, only leaves beautiful, smooth, and hair-free skin.

Final Thoughts

People want to look attractive, and having perfect skin that is hairless and pleasing to look at is undoubtedly the trend these days. If going hairless will increase your confidence and give you the look you want better get an appointment with an aesthetic clinic and watch your unwanted hairs disappear. Soon your beautiful hairless body will be turning heads at the beach and make you feel like a total knockout.

SKINCARE 911: WHAT TO DO WHEN A SKINCARE DISASTER ERUPTS BEFORE A HOLIDAY PARTY

Waking up on the day before or day of a big holiday party with an unsightly skincare emergency can stress anyone out. How many people have canceled an invitation because a cold sore erupted? How about cystic acne on your cheek that appears on New Year’s Eve? While neither of these is “life-threatening” conditions, for anyone wanting to look good for the in-laws,  they might as well be. However, there are solutions. Dr. Manish Shah is a Denver Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. As a father to girls, he can relate to these skincare 911s and shares his expertise on what can be done to mitigate various conditions.

Problem: Cold Sore

Solution: Dr. Shah offers cortisone injections to patients who want to look better faster. “Very diluted cortisone into the cold sore, this can bring the inflammation down quite rapidly,” he says. If you are afraid of needles, call your doctor and ask him/her to call in a prescription for Valtrex, Famvir, or Acylovir, Dr. Shah says. You can pick up Abreva, an over-the-counter medication. If you can’t make it to the pharmacy, you can try some old-fashioned remedies: Visine will help take the red out. You can also use a cold compress and Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Problem: Allergic Reaction

Solution: The first thing you need to do is stop eating or using whatever is causing the allergic reaction. If the reaction happens a few days before an occasion, Dr. Shah recommends using hydrocortisone cream twice a day and taking Allegra, Claritin or Zyrtec which are longer acting and less sedating than Benadryl. Try a whole-milk compress for 10 minutes twice a day. For allergic reactions, use the hydrocortisone cream and then cover up redness by canceling it out entirely. The opposite of red is green, so apply green tinted concealer on the red area. The combination will create a flesh-toned hue. A good quality tinted moisturizer naturally has green/yellow undertones and also provides moisture to dry skin. “If this type of reaction is something you have never experienced before, go immediately to your dermatologist,” says Dr. Shah.

Problem: Cystic Acne Breakout

There are some people who use a lancet or small knife to cut into a cyst and fish out the clogged part of the pore. “Cutting open a cyst is extremely risky. You not only run the risk of getting an infection, but you also run the risk of scarring, as in a permanent skin indentation or protrusion,” says Dr. Shah. And what if you cut open a cyst but can’t squeeze out the root clog? You don’t know where the root is or how deep it resides inside your skin. You can’t even be 100% confident that you will be able to completely remove the hardened plug of the cyst. If any remnants of the clog remain, the cyst is likely to get re-inflamed and come back even worse. It’s also not exactly good to cut open skin and dig around and squeeze the wound. Doing so will only make a bloody mess, increase the chance of skin scarring, and prolong the time it takes the cyst to heal.

Solution: Here’s a secret that many a supermodel or actress uses: Steroid shot. Dr. Shah explains that “when we discuss treating acne with cortisone or “steroid” shots, we are referring to the process of gently placing a very dilute quantity of a “glucocorticoid” steroid into the cyst. Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies and have numerous functions including the regulation of human metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. They have very potent anti-inflammatory effects, so they are often used to treat inflammatory diseases in medicine. They can be formulated as creams to treat skin rashes or as pills to treat systemic disease. They can also be injected directly into local areas of inflammation such as in arthritic joints and inflamed acne cysts. Within one or two days of injection into a cyst, the steroid will shrink the inflammation producing relief of pain and almost immediate cosmetic improvement.”

Problem: Puffy Eyes

Solution: The key to reducing the puffiness of puffy eyes is having something cool applied to them. “A cool compress or cooled cucumber slices applied for 5 to 10 minutes can constrict blood and lymph vessels,” says Dr. Shah. You can also use cool tea bags, which contain tannins that will help reduce swelling. And since puffy eyes can be caused by a high salt diet or alcohol, try to cut out both before an important occasion.

Problem: Sunburn

Solution: Take a cool bath or shower. Set the water to a cool temperature that’s just below lukewarm and relax for 10 to 20 minutes. The temperature will ease the pain, and the water will stop your skin from becoming as irritated. Repeat as often as you need to. Avoid using soap, bath oils, or other detergents as you bathe – they’ll irritate your skin and possibly make it even worse. If you have blisters forming on your skin, take a bath instead of showering. The pressure from the shower might pop your blisters. When you get out, don’t rub your skin dry with a towel. Instead, let yourself air dry, or pat the towel over your skin in small, gentle movements. Apply cold compresses to your skin. If you’re not in a situation where you can bathe, or you’d just prefer not to, you can instead apply cold, wet compresses to your skin. Dampen a washcloth or other piece of fabric with cold water and lay it over the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes. Re-wet it as often as you need to. Apply aloe vera to burned skin. Using the pads of your fingers, gently apply the aloe to your sunburn. Don’t “rub it in” all the way, as you might with a regular lotion. Leave it a bit goopy and moist on top of the burn – this helps prevent the skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Reapply as often as necessary. Treat inflammation with cortisone cream (optional). Cortisone creams contain a small dose of steroids that can work to reduce inflammation to your sunburn.

Problem: Too much filler

The Solution: Dr. Shah suggests doing fillers no sooner than 1 month before a big event to allow time for healing and touch ups. One of the reasons Dr. Shah leans toward hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane is because they are easily reversed with Hyaluronidase. This product dissolves and degrades the Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane so as to reverse the results of the initial injection. It’s a great insurance policy when choosing a practitioner. Make sure yours has it at his/her disposal. Most patients find the immediate results of soft tissue filler treatments very satisfying. If an undesirable result occurs, your treatment provider should be able to discuss and carry out all of the treatment options. Removing the effects of a “filler” treatment can be difficult. This is why any filler treatment needs to be done carefully, conservatively and only by very experienced and Board -Certified Specialists. Hyaluronic Acid based dermal fillers have the additional benefit of being partially or completely reversed with time or with the injection of a commercially available enzyme known as Hyaluronidase.

Swimsuits from the Dream – Dress to Impress (On the Beach!)

What is something that every girl wants? An attractive body during the summer. Well, winter preparations to get your beach body are not the only thing you can do. We are here to tell you what swimsuits are the trendiest and will make you look like a true beach bombshell.

High waisted swimsuits

Thankfully, curvy, plus size girls have raised their voices in the body positivity movement, so now many brands have gorgeous lines that fit any body type. One-piece swimsuits are great, but we are happier about the two-piece ones that make all the girls feel sexy and attractive. High-waisted bottoms are one of them, and the best thing is that no matter what your body type is, they will flatter your figure. Striped, retro style or earthy tones are trendy, and they would look very stylish with a headscarf.

Minimalistic style

Again, we have to thank the body positivity movement that you don’t have to cover too much of your body and be ashamed of what you look like. This resulted in the trend of miniature bikinis that leave little to the imagination. The most notable part of this is various triangle bikinis for all that are perfect for a tan with less lines, and for showing off your curves proudly. Many designs from floral, and animal print, to monochrome, are available so that every girl can choose what she feels best in. As for the bottoms, high cut, thin straps that sit on your waist are very popular.

Bold designs and fabric

If there is something that we have seen all around social media posts when it comes to bathing suits, it’s the bold designs and swimsuits with bands. They are perfect for when you are already tan, and they look amazing, unique, and interesting. The benefit of this type of swimsuit is that it is usually made from thicker fabric, so you can be sure nothing is see-through, yet they are comfortable. Neon colors with a different colored band are one trend you definitely want to try. And for all of you who like a statement piece, you can get the ones with printed brand names or logos.

One-piece swimsuits

For a period, we forgot all about one-piece swimsuits that were popular in the ’80s and ’90s. But, a few years ago, they made a huge comeback, and it seems they are here to stay. Deep V neck, belts, side cuts, ruffles, open back, and straps, all of these designs made us fall in love with them again, and we can see them all over fashion shows, and magazines as well. And what is even better is that famous brands like Victoria Secret have started hiring models who are of different body shapes and sizes, and thus showed how any girl can look amazing when following the newest trends. A very stylish look when it comes to one-piece swimsuits is the asymmetric, bare shoulder design, or even strapless swimsuit. It emphasizes the shoulders and makes the look more soft, feminine, and attractive.

Trendy patterns and colors for 2020

Now that we have talked about the popular types of swimwear, let us briefly go over the trendiest designs, patterns and colors for the upcoming summer season. As you would suppose, animal print is still one of the most loved ones, along with floral ones. The colors that dominate in animal print are beige, yellow, and even red for a more unique look, and green, orange, and yellow for floral ones. Bright colors like yellow, red, green, or pink are perfect for anyone who wants a super fun look. However, if you want a more elegant, classic look, monochromes are a safe choice. For a more girly, feminine look, we would recommend pastel colors combined with stripped print. And for a more chic, bold look, dark red, ochre, and olive green mixed with golds are the perfect look.

The biggest trend when it comes to swimsuits is the fact that every body shape and size is included, and every woman can feel attractive and confident on the beach. And as for the actual trends, you can find inspiration in this little guide.

The Secret to Making Thicker Braids – The Perfect Foundation for Bubble Braiding

(New York, NY) – There’s certainly no shortage of braiding, knotting and twisting techniques, but unless there’s enough volume in the pattern, the style can be blah…and even slip out.  Anna Peters, Sam Villa ArTeam Member, shares the secret to creating a special kind of texture that provides more grip and increases volume by 3X!  See how it creates the perfect foundation for bubble braiding!

“Creating full fat braids starts with building texture before crafting the pattern, do that and your results will be massive!” says Peters.

TEXTURE X3

  • Apply Redken iron shape 11 to protect hair from heat damage, lock in thermal styling and preserve color.
  • Tap the Sam Villa Signature Series Textur Professional Texturizing Iron down sections. The plates create a special expanded type of texture that is super big, actually 3 times larger, and it holds patterns securely for long lasting braids.

Bubble Braid Technique

  • Create a triangle section and secure with an elastic very close to the head.
  • Take a diagonal section under that, pick up more hair from below and add to the existing ends of the previous ponytail and secure.
  • Pull to tighten to create the first bubble and use fingers to gently pull the bubble apart to create more volume.
  • Repeat until the ends, which can hang like a traditional braid or be pinned into an updo.

“This is a super simple technique that even young girls can do, just make sure to keep your sections the same size so the bubbles are uniform,” says Peters.
