4 Ways to Become Calmer: Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

When was the last time you were truly at peace? If you can’t remember, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Modern life is full of stressors that can make it difficult to relax and find calm. From work deadlines to family obligations to financial concerns, there are plenty of things that can make us feel overwhelmed and anxious. Take a Few Deep Breaths

When you are feeling stressed, one of the first things you can do is take a few deep breaths. This will help to oxygenate your blood and slow down your heart rate. If you find it difficult to take deep breaths, try this exercise: Place one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Slowly inhale through your nose, filling up your stomach first and then expanding into your chest. Hold your breath for a count of three, and then slowly exhale through pursed lips. Repeat this several times until you feel yourself start to relax.

Listen to Calming Music

Another simple but effective relaxation technique is to listen to calming music. Studies have shown that listening to relaxing music can decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure, and reduce heart rate. It can also help to promote better sleep. If you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of playlists available online that are specifically designed for relaxation. You can also try downloading a white noise app which can provide you with calming sounds such as rain or waves crashing on the shore.

Get Outside in Nature

Spending time in nature has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety. One study even found that people who took a 50-minute walk in a natural setting had lower levels of rumination (a type of negative thinking that can contribute to depression and anxiety) than those who walked in an urban environment. So, if you’re feeling stressed, take some time to go for a walk in the park or spend a few minutes sitting on your front porch enjoying the fresh air. You’ll likely find that it does wonders for your mood and overall sense of well-being.
