Cut by Celebrity Hairstylist Laurie Heaps @_hairbylaurie
Done right before The Golden Globes, LA based celebrity hairstylist Laurie Heaps shares how she created Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira’s NEW mullet cut and ways to style one of 2020’s hottest hair trends.
How to get the look…..
“To start, Barbie had a long-layered bob that was just above the shoulders. To achieve this new look, we cut about four inches from the sides and top,” reveals Laurie. “Barbie wanted a change and something different. She tends to avoid anything that might read as generic or typical. I love that she leans towards edgier & riskier hairstyles.”
With a razor and scissors, Laurie created the mullet style cut by chopping into sections for texture. She cut the sides and top and then blended this into the back, leaving the length there. “For this style, we wanted to really accentuate the short in the front long in the back look.”
Why the Modern Mullet? “Barbie said she wanted something piecey and Elf like. We looked through at a lot of pictures together and then just created this vision of a modern mullet.”
Tips for Styling
- The beauty of this look is that it can be cut for any hair type – just add texture with an undone feel. You can embrace your natural waves and curls, wear it straight or switch it up by adding extra bends and dimension with hot tools.
- For a great heat styler, try a smaller version of your favorite flat iron. CHI’s Lava Ceramic Hairstyling Iron comes in a great travel size perfect for shorter cuts like this. Taking ½” pieces of hair or smaller, use a wrist flicking technique to wave the iron back and forth down the section. This will give it some chic twists and smooth, tousled curves with just the right amount of bend to them.
- Whether you choose to wear your Modern Mullet curly or straight, I recommend a great texturizing spray like Redken’s Triple Dry 15 Dry Texture Finishing Spray. This one gives styles airy texture and lift.
