SKINCARE 911: WHAT TO DO WHEN A SKINCARE DISASTER ERUPTS BEFORE A HOLIDAY PARTY

Waking up on the day before or day of a big holiday party with an unsightly skincare emergency can stress anyone out. How many people have canceled an invitation because a cold sore erupted? How about cystic acne on your cheek that appears on New Year’s Eve? While neither of these is “life-threatening” conditions, for anyone wanting to look good for the in-laws,  they might as well be. However, there are solutions. Dr. Manish Shah is a Denver Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. As a father to girls, he can relate to these skincare 911s and shares his expertise on what can be done to mitigate various conditions.

Problem: Cold Sore

Solution: Dr. Shah offers cortisone injections to patients who want to look better faster. “Very diluted cortisone into the cold sore, this can bring the inflammation down quite rapidly,” he says. If you are afraid of needles, call your doctor and ask him/her to call in a prescription for Valtrex, Famvir, or Acylovir, Dr. Shah says. You can pick up Abreva, an over-the-counter medication. If you can’t make it to the pharmacy, you can try some old-fashioned remedies: Visine will help take the red out. You can also use a cold compress and Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Problem: Allergic Reaction

Solution: The first thing you need to do is stop eating or using whatever is causing the allergic reaction. If the reaction happens a few days before an occasion, Dr. Shah recommends using hydrocortisone cream twice a day and taking Allegra, Claritin or Zyrtec which are longer acting and less sedating than Benadryl. Try a whole-milk compress for 10 minutes twice a day. For allergic reactions, use the hydrocortisone cream and then cover up redness by canceling it out entirely. The opposite of red is green, so apply green tinted concealer on the red area. The combination will create a flesh-toned hue. A good quality tinted moisturizer naturally has green/yellow undertones and also provides moisture to dry skin. “If this type of reaction is something you have never experienced before, go immediately to your dermatologist,” says Dr. Shah.

Problem: Cystic Acne Breakout

There are some people who use a lancet or small knife to cut into a cyst and fish out the clogged part of the pore. “Cutting open a cyst is extremely risky. You not only run the risk of getting an infection, but you also run the risk of scarring, as in a permanent skin indentation or protrusion,” says Dr. Shah. And what if you cut open a cyst but can’t squeeze out the root clog? You don’t know where the root is or how deep it resides inside your skin. You can’t even be 100% confident that you will be able to completely remove the hardened plug of the cyst. If any remnants of the clog remain, the cyst is likely to get re-inflamed and come back even worse. It’s also not exactly good to cut open skin and dig around and squeeze the wound. Doing so will only make a bloody mess, increase the chance of skin scarring, and prolong the time it takes the cyst to heal.

Solution: Here’s a secret that many a supermodel or actress uses: Steroid shot. Dr. Shah explains that “when we discuss treating acne with cortisone or “steroid” shots, we are referring to the process of gently placing a very dilute quantity of a “glucocorticoid” steroid into the cyst. Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies and have numerous functions including the regulation of human metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. They have very potent anti-inflammatory effects, so they are often used to treat inflammatory diseases in medicine. They can be formulated as creams to treat skin rashes or as pills to treat systemic disease. They can also be injected directly into local areas of inflammation such as in arthritic joints and inflamed acne cysts. Within one or two days of injection into a cyst, the steroid will shrink the inflammation producing relief of pain and almost immediate cosmetic improvement.”

Problem: Puffy Eyes

Solution: The key to reducing the puffiness of puffy eyes is having something cool applied to them. “A cool compress or cooled cucumber slices applied for 5 to 10 minutes can constrict blood and lymph vessels,” says Dr. Shah. You can also use cool tea bags, which contain tannins that will help reduce swelling. And since puffy eyes can be caused by a high salt diet or alcohol, try to cut out both before an important occasion.

Problem: Sunburn

Solution: Take a cool bath or shower. Set the water to a cool temperature that’s just below lukewarm and relax for 10 to 20 minutes. The temperature will ease the pain, and the water will stop your skin from becoming as irritated. Repeat as often as you need to. Avoid using soap, bath oils, or other detergents as you bathe – they’ll irritate your skin and possibly make it even worse. If you have blisters forming on your skin, take a bath instead of showering. The pressure from the shower might pop your blisters. When you get out, don’t rub your skin dry with a towel. Instead, let yourself air dry, or pat the towel over your skin in small, gentle movements. Apply cold compresses to your skin. If you’re not in a situation where you can bathe, or you’d just prefer not to, you can instead apply cold, wet compresses to your skin. Dampen a washcloth or other piece of fabric with cold water and lay it over the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes. Re-wet it as often as you need to. Apply aloe vera to burned skin. Using the pads of your fingers, gently apply the aloe to your sunburn. Don’t “rub it in” all the way, as you might with a regular lotion. Leave it a bit goopy and moist on top of the burn – this helps prevent the skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Reapply as often as necessary. Treat inflammation with cortisone cream (optional). Cortisone creams contain a small dose of steroids that can work to reduce inflammation to your sunburn.

Problem: Too much filler

The Solution: Dr. Shah suggests doing fillers no sooner than 1 month before a big event to allow time for healing and touch ups. One of the reasons Dr. Shah leans toward hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane is because they are easily reversed with Hyaluronidase. This product dissolves and degrades the Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane so as to reverse the results of the initial injection. It’s a great insurance policy when choosing a practitioner. Make sure yours has it at his/her disposal. Most patients find the immediate results of soft tissue filler treatments very satisfying. If an undesirable result occurs, your treatment provider should be able to discuss and carry out all of the treatment options. Removing the effects of a “filler” treatment can be difficult. This is why any filler treatment needs to be done carefully, conservatively and only by very experienced and Board -Certified Specialists. Hyaluronic Acid based dermal fillers have the additional benefit of being partially or completely reversed with time or with the injection of a commercially available enzyme known as Hyaluronidase.

Read This First Before You Set Up Your WiFi

WiFi in all of it’s glory connects your favorite devices at home or in the office to the wonderful World Wide Web. Get to know your WiFi so you can set it up right and skip the brain-numbing buffering. Here are a few things to keep in mind when configuring your WiFi:

How is Your WiFi Used?

How many devices can your router handle? Are you part of a family of eight? Do you have a couple of roommates or are you flying solo? Is this an office setting with a multitude of crucial connected smart devices?

When too many devices are connected at the same time, your speed will likely suffer. Set up a whitelist from inside your router to prevent others from accessing your WiFi. If you still have trouble, double-check that your current plan can handle all the activity.

Top Shelf

A place for everything and everything in its place. That’s never more true than where you decide to put the location of your router. Where are the most important access points for your WiFi? Where is a good central location to reach those areas? Set the router in the same room as the static devices you use the most. For some, that may be on the main floor where their desktop resides. For others, it may be upstairs in a bedroom where they want WiFi for late night Netflix binging.

Place the router high on a shelf or ledge and keep it off the floor for the best connection. Avoid proximity to electronics, including the fridge, baby monitor, microwave, large fish tanks, and Bluetooth devices. Those items love to interfere or block with the signal.

Lock It Down

An unsecured WiFi account is fair game for parasitic neighbors. Keep your network private and secure it with a password. Neglecting this step can put extra stress on your WiFi. Your signal will suffer as your neighbors hop on and consume your bandwidth. Boot unwanted devices off your server with a simple network password change. Use a password that is at least twelve characters long, with a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Try, Try Again

If your WiFi is handling a lot of devices, you may not get your WiFi set up right on the first try. Relocate the router if you find dead zones where you need service or if your signal fails. Your WiFi views mirrors, doors, windows, and furniture as almost impossible obstacles. If you can, reposition your router to avoid them.

A Step Above

If your WiFi troubleshooting isn’t improving things, or a few device additions are changing the way your WiFi is working, you might want to consider upping your reach a different way. Large spaces, or those with wonky layouts, might want to seek out a WiFi range extender or a whole home WiFi system. It may be the only way to get the signal you need.

Understanding Your WiFi

Pockets of WiFi-free access happen. While nothing is more infuriating than a snail-slow download or a file that won’t print, the tips above can help you set your WiFi up the right way at the start. Don’t be afraid to move your router around and test out new locations, especially if your WiFi is handling multiple devices. Add in a great password so your WiFi stays your WiFi. This is one thing you don’t want to share with your neighbors.

Role Models: Should You Follow The Stars?

There are a lot of famous people in the world, and this pool is getting bigger all the time. The modern age of the Internet has made it easier and easier for people to find stardom, and increasing numbers of people have access to their lives. It can be easy to find yourself trying to emulate people like the way that celebrities live, but this isn’t always the healthiest way to approach your life. Instead, it makes more sense to think about this, ensuring that you’re not following role models who shouldn’t be followed at all.

To start, it makes sense to think about why people like to follow celebrities. These people are often the most confident, likable, and friendly people out there, with their lives being available for everyone to view. With such popularity, it can be easy to find yourself desperate to match the lifestyle they have. Of course, though, in reality, simply following someone’s lifestyle isn’t enough to make yourself famous, and the people already in this position are rarely experts in the field of happiness. Instead, they will simply be taking actions which they believe will make them more popular, and this has to be kept in mind. People like to follow celebrities, and this is often as a result of low self-confidence.

The ways in which people follow celebs can differ from person to person. Some will take fashion advice from the stars, while others will want to emulate them as closely as possible, and both routes can have their problems. For example, while many celebrities opt for cosmetic dental work, this often isn’t affordable or necessary for normal people. Seeing people with perfect teeth on TV and in movies will always make people feel bad about their own mouths, even if other people wouldn’t notice the slight misalignments and imperfections found inside them. Of course, though, as a big part of this, it can be hard to tell how people will copy the stars, as everyone will want to highlight different parts of their lifestyles.

Deciding whether or not you should follow celebrities is a hard choice. On the one hand, this sort of approach to life can make people very happy. But, on the other, it can also be hugely damaging, making people feel as though they are lacking for simply being themselves. This is something you have to choose for yourself, but it’s worth considering the impact it could have on you, along with the true importance of the work you’re doing. If you’re worried you’re taking something like this too far, it’s worth talking to those closest to you, as they will be happy to steer you in the right direction.

With all of this in mind, you should be feeling ready to take on the challenge of choosing whether or not to follow the stars. If something like this makes you happy, it can be worth it, though this can be a dangerous route to travel if you’re likely to be hurt by it.

Ciara & Ariana Grande’s Half Up Pony with Extensions

The Half Up Trend Tutorial by Mayvenn Install

No matter what the trend, Mayvenn Install & Extensions can create the look of your dreams

Worn by stars like Ciara, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Beyoncé, Mayvenn Install stylist Anthony Jackson (@jaxxstylez) of The DollMakers Studio in NYC provides his step by step tips to achieve the trending Half Up style with extensions. As a celebrity stylist, Anthony has worked with stars such as Sky from Black Ink, Mya, and countless others from reality TV shows.

The Half Up is a trend that is not only fashionable but versatile. With the right technique, it can be achieved with high quality extensions that look invisible once installed. Using bundles from Mayvenn, this style can be done with almost any type of hair – from sleek, to wavy, to curly and even at any length. The best part?  You can buy the hair directly from the company online www.mayvenn.com. Then, Mayvenn matches you with a local stylist like Anthony who will then install the hair for FREE – all for the cost of the hair itself. It is essentially hair + service (shampoo, condition, braid down, sew-in, and style) for the price of one

Products needed:

-needle & thread

-2 or 3 bundles of Mayvenn hair

-edge pomade

-elastic hair band

-weaving net

-hair pins/ bobby pins

-heat protectant

Steps by Steps:

  1. Prep and wash both the hair as well as the Mayvenn bundles selected. This ensures the client’s hair is product free and ready to be braided.
  2. After blow drying the hair dry, take a section of the hair at the top of crown to create the top knot or pony and secure with a clip.
  3. Next, section enough hair beneath the top knot or pony going from ear to ear about 1-2 inches and clip away. This will help to blend and cover the sew-in installation later when finishing the style. The remaining hair is left for braiding.
  4. Once the entire head is sectioned off, use an elastic hair band to place the top knot or pony in the desired position suitable for the client. Remember to leave room, you’ll be adding hair later.
  5. Next, using the edge control, smooth out the pony and mold the edges around the hairline for a clean finish.

[On to the back]

  1. Braid the remaining hair straight back in a horseshoe pattern connecting the ends to each other.
  2. Once the entire back is braided, attach the hair weaving net to the braided foundation. Securing the perimeter for a seamless finish.

[Time to install your Mayvenn hair]

  1. Using 2 of the Mayvenn bundles, begin to sew-in the extensions to make sure the entire area is covered as much as possible.
  2. Continue to follow the horseshoe method to ensure maximizing the shape of the head by curving the ends of the wefts for a versatile natural look.

[Styling]

  1. Once you have sewn-in all of the hair, it is time to blend your leave-out section. Begin to flat iron the leave out using a heat protectant to avoid heat damage. You may also use a curling iron if the style is curlier. Note: please keep in mind if client has longer hair, you’ll need to braid the pony to camouflage the hair.
  2. Using the remaining bundle of hair, attach to the top knot or pony using bobby pins, securing the end of the bundle to the elastic hair band. Wrap the weft of hair counterclockwise around the pony or top knot.  Be sure to add pins along the base of the pony to secure.
  3. The look should be complete and you can style the hair as desired by the client.
  4. This look should last about 2-3 weeks with proper care and tying up at night to avoid messing up the smooth pony at top.

Build Your Self-Confidence Because You Deserve It

We all have a complicated relationship with ourselves, and there will be times in everyone’s life when they do not feel as though they are attractive. Often, a few small elements of our looks can become very real hang-ups and before we know it we have become consumed by negative emotions and as such as will struggle to find anything we like in ourselves anymore. There may have been a trigger, or it could be a natural low sense of self-esteem, but having a lack of confidence in our appearances can have a huge knock-on effect to other areas of our lives and can make us terribly depressed and insecure.

There are many ways of combating these feelings and training our minds to overcome feelings that make us feel so bad about ourselves. Here are a few things that you could look at.

Treat Yourself To A Makeover

Whatever the major area of your face or body is that is making you feel the worst, focus on looking after that specific area. If you’re feeling bad about your skin, give it a lift, Use collagen or put a face mask on and help yourself to create clearer skin that has fewer blemishes or wrinkles.

Go to a hairdresser and get a style that will help you to feel much better about yourself. There are ways that you can change your external appearance to help to give yourself that confidence boost that you need, and there is no harm in trying to do this.

If the idea of going out and getting treatment from a professional scares you, think about getting a friend that you trust to help you, or practice doing your makeup yourself. Be patient with yourself and don’t feel as though you are doing this for anyone but yourself. If you’re not happy, rub it off and start again.

Retrain Your Negative Thoughts

Generally, if you are feeling as though you have a lack of self- confidence then the things that you are concerned about in your appearance will not necessarily actually be a problem. You may think that people can see these bad things about you and that they will judge you for it. Very often, these things may not even be noticed that much. Or negative mind will cling to these negative feelings and it can leave us fixated and unable to see anything else.

There are probably a great number of things that you do like about yourself, but through the negativity, you will not see them anymore. Try and remind yourself of the bits of you that like or think may be attractive. Focus your attention on these parts of your face or body and tell yourself out loud how beautiful they are. Find ways to dress or wear your hair and makeup that will accentuate these aspects of yourself. Owning the parts of yourself that you are proud of will make you feel a lot more positive overall.

Use Pumpkins After Halloween to Benefit Your Skin

From pumpkin spice lattes to Halloween decorations, when fall hits, it is pumpkin season-mania. With approximately 65,900 acres of pumpkins harvested in the United States last year alone, and most pumpkin patches closing up after Halloween, what are you to do with all the leftover pumpkins you used as decorations for your spooky festivities?

Dr. Gretchen Frieling, a Boston-area board-certified dermatopathologist, explains that instead of throwing out the pumpkins you used this October 31st for decorative functions, you can reuse them for various beauty and health purposes. “Pumpkin is a great way to incorporate more vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E as well as essential fatty acids that help reduce markers of aging while also moisturizing the skin,” says Dr. Freiling, who is a Harvard-trained physician with a 10+ year background in the Dermatology and Pathology fields.

So how can you incorporate your leftover pumpkin into your daily regimen?

Dr. Frieling suggests “mashing it up into a face mask to moisturize, using it as an ingredient in an exfoliant mixture with brown sugar and honey, or using some of it in your meal prep to garner some of the benefits of pumpkin from the inside out.”

Dr. Frieling shared four reasons why you should incorporate your Halloween pumpkin leftovers into your wellness routine.

Addresses Age marks: Wrinkles and brown spots

Pumpkin contains Vitamin A derivatives that aid in reducing the depth of fine lines over extended periods. Excessive sun exposure may accelerate spots of hyperpigmentation and the degradation of the skin’s firmness. Pumpkin can add an extra nudge to your beauty routine to address this.

Alleviates Acne and helps with Oily Skin

Pumpkin contains a healthy portion of zinc in its seeds. Zinc can help alleviate acne in some people. While not nearly as powerful as a prescription acne treatment, adding pumpkin seeds to your daily routine as a snack can help give you extra zinc, iron, magnesium, fiber, and even protein. It will also work to regulate oil production in the skin, helping to prevent the build-up of excess oil in the pores.

Uneven skin tones and smoother texture

Many patients experience problems with their skin texture and uneven skin tones. Today, a variety of beauty products use pumpkin as an additive to aid in smoothing out skin tones and textures. Pumpkin can get the job done because it contains alpha-hydroxy acids, which are naturally found in food and which is often used to improve dry, wrinkled, or acne-prone skin. What AHAs do to the skin is clear out the outermost layer of dead skin cells and thickening the deeper layers to create the appearance of tighter skin.

Anti-Inflammatory

Nutrients and minerals such as zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin E also reduce inflammation. These are found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Some examples include carrots, pumpkin, squash, beans, spinach, kale, sunflower seeds, broccoli, blueberries, and brown rice. Vitamin C in pumpkin helps reduce inflammation, puffiness, and redness in the skin while also calming the epidermis. Vitamin C is also popular for its collagen-boosting effect.
