It doesn’t make much difference if you’ve had a skin routine in place from the moment you could say moisturizer or if you’ve only just come around to the fact that you’re going to need to start looking after your skin. The fact is that staying young looking, disappearing fine lines and wrinkles and generally looking fresh faced starts with a great routine (plus a few little tips of the trade).
In this article we take a look at what it takes to keep skin looking firm and fresh without having to go under the knife.
Routine Basics
You may have your favorite creams and beauty treatments on your shelves already and many that have been in the family for years, but it’s always worth having a look at new products.
You know the importance of taking off your makeup before bedtime and undoubtedly have a good cleanse, tone and moisturizing routine going on so what else should you throw into the mix for even better skin rejuvenation?
The first thing you might look at is acid peels. These are not anywhere near as terrifying as they sound but are great at helping skin look fresher, firmer and plumper. This is particularly useful if you do have mature skin, which tends to thin as we age.
A good peel shouldn’t be painful or burn the skin but instead exfoliates deeper than a normal scrub and they go a long way in boosting skin cell renewal, all essential for younger-looking, wrinkle free skin.
You can use a peel once a week if you have dry or delicate skin or up to twice a week for other types, though do always check the instructions as this can change from product to product.
Other additions to your skin care routine might also include some vitamin-rich night cream that works to rejuvenate and boost skin cell repair at night, when the rest of your body is also recovering from the strains of the day.
Makeup
How long have you been rocking that same look for? While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having your signature look, there are times when a new makeup routine can transform not only what you look like but also how you feel.
The key to achieving your makeup goals is to establish what it is you want to achieve. If you’re looking for a fresh faced, dewy look then it’s time to ditch the matte foundation and concentrate on finding a product that allows for a little bit of shine. Couple that with a great highlighter stick for your cheekbones and you’ll look fresh and radiant and yes, youthful.
If you’re hoping to soften your look, then you may want to do away with the plucked eyebrow look and let your brows thicken slightly. Use a brow brush and powder to create shape and the desired color. We’re not talking wildly out of control but rather fuller and styled for a less severe look.
Lifestyle
There always has to be a section on lifestyle because there’s no getting away from the fact that what you put into your body is going to have a drastic effect on how your skin reacts and how you feel in general. Treat yourself kindly and give your body everything it needs and you’ll have more energy, healthy hair and skin. On the other hand pump lots of chemicals and processed food into your body and you’ll lose that vigor.
So, just start with the basics. Drink a lot of water, get good quality sleep and plenty of it, move your body and eat lots of colorful, fresh produce.
Why sleep? As mentioned up post this is the time where your body and your mind gets to repair itself and prepare you for the next day. If you consistently skip sleep, then you’ll begin to find doing life gets harder and harder. You’ll lose concentration, feel dizzy and become easily confused and forgetful. As great as parties are, make sure you balance your life with non-alcohol nights too. Your skin, hair and overall health will thank you for it.
Exercise is one of those things that starts with great intentions but can very easily fall by the wayside. One of the biggest reasons for this is because you pick an exercise that feels like punishment and deep down find really quite boring.
You will never sustain a regime that doesn’t interest and challenge you, so make it your goal to introduce movement in your life that feels good. You might hate running but love lifting weights instead, go for it. It all contributes to your energy levels, feeling good about yourself and giving your skin a healthy glow.
Finally a word on food. The biggest favor you can do for your skin is to cut out the processed food. Think a fresh, colorful plate packed full of tasty food that nourishes your body and your skin.
You don’t need to banish cakes from your diet, just consider them as the treats they should be. You might even want to adopt an 80/20 routine where takeaways and alcohol are just saved for a couple of days over the weekend.
Healthy skin doesn’t just come out of a packet but instead comes from a variety of sources. Make your overall health a priority and your skin and hair will shine. You’ll also benefit from having loads of more energy.
Get your skincare routine in place with good quality products, including a chemical peel and high quality moisturizer that rejuvenates your skin at night. Give your look a fresh do-over with a change of cosmetics and a new, softer look that might also include taking your eyebrows to task.
Then make sure that your well being is number one. Give yourself the chance to get plenty of rest, plenty of fresh food and a lot of water.
Great skin comes from taking care of all of you, so make sure you’re feeling great for a look that keeps you looking young and fresh for many years to come.
