May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. We all know that the sun can be very damaging to the skin. It can even  be deadly!

With over twelve years leading the field of skin research, Dr. Hal  Simeroth,  skin expert and creator of innovative Stemology skincare line wants us to be aware of some of the most common myths about sun damage.

Here, Dr. Simeroth lists the top four myths about sun exposure.

  • You won’t get skin damage if you wear sunscreen.
  • You have to be out in the sun for a while to get skin damage.
  • You’re only at risk for sun damage and skin cancer in the summer months.
  • It’s safer to use a tanning bed and avoid sun exposure.

Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature skin aging, contributing to such unsightly problems as brown spots, wrinkles, and thickened skin. Damaging UVA and UVB rays, though invisible, break down skin’s collagen and elastin – essential elements for healthy renewal and repair – resulting in loose, sagging skin, or worse: skin cancer.
