If you’re a fashion lover, then you know all about mixing and matching fabrics and prints in your wardrobe. At Modernize, we think that when you’re decorating your home, you should let your love for the fashion world shine, too. Here are seven essential prints every fashion lover should include in his or her home (although maybe not all in the same place).
Geometric
Nothing says fashion like a big, bold geometric print. Bonus points for black and white prints, because we all know that monochrome style isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Geometrics work best on throw blankets and accent cushions, as a bold bedding choice, or even on shower curtains.
Herringbone
For classic, Old World fashion charm, a herringbone pattern does wonders to transform a space. Choose from rugs, blankets, curtains; you name it, it works as herringbone. You can thank Benedict Cumberbatch and the tweed filled world of Sherlock Holmes for bringing this English style back onto our fashion radar.
Animal (faux, of course)
If ever there was a print that was a must have for fashionistas, animal would be it. Zebra, leopard, tiger, and even cow (yes, I said cow) prints are staples on the runway year after year. Be brave and add one or two animal print pieces to your home furnishings and fabric accessories. Just remember not to take it overboard!
Floral
Floral prints don’t have to be dowdy and old-fashioned. There are plenty of florals that are suitable for both vintage lovers and modern fashion mavens, so take your pick and decorate your bedroom and even your living room with a few extra flowers. If you want to be especially avant garde with your style, choose soft, Eastern inspired florals with pinks and blues; it’s a hot trend coming up next spring.
Stripes
Fortunately for everyone, stripes are never going out of style. How you wear them changes from year to year, of course, and the same can be said for home decor. Wide stripes and chevrons have had their time in the sun, so we have a feeling that thinner stripes are coming back soon. Whichever you prefer, be bold and use stripes as accents throughout your home.
Houndstooth
For those of us whose fashion icons include the likes of Gwen Stefani, houndstooth is already a firm favorite. Although technically a geometric print, this variety gets its own category because of its brazen uniqueness and versatility. Anyone can rock houndstooth if they’re brave enough, so don’t be afraid to reupholster that oversized armchair with a print most of your other friends probably don’t use in their own homes.
Plaid
At first glance, plaid may seem like a bit of a boring print, but I promise it’s more than wool blankets and ski chalet design. From Scottish tartan to bright, multicolored crosshatches, the modern plaid can match any home’s style. Simply choose your color scheme and add a few pops of plaid to your pillows, throws, and even upholstery.
