Get a Little Wild with Sally Hansen

Sally Hansen hit the runway with the Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2015 Show. Sally Hansen’s Global Color Ambassador Madeline Poole took inspiration from the charming, chic pieces she saw on the runway and created the below nail look. This  ]is the runway look that inspired her along with the steps for  creating this nail look.

Sally Hansen

Sally Hansen

1)      Start with two coats of Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in Lemon Heaven.

2)      Next, using Miracle Gel in Red Eye, draw short curvy lines on the nail bed to create a continuous pattern.  The thickness of the polish’s brush allows for the perfect chubby squiggled line.

3)      Then, wipe the majority of the polish off the Miracle Gel in Blacky-O brush so that very little is left on the bristles.  Dab the tip of the brush along the center line of the red squiggles.

4)      After allowing the colors to dry for five minutes,  apply Miracle Gel Top Coat to seal the look.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH FRANK MARINO

unnamed-80

Vegas’ “longest running headliner” Frank Marino (FrankMarino.com) is bringing his famed female impersonator show Divas to the Avalon Hollywood. This one-night only (Friday, March 13, 2015) event benefits Cops 4 Causes (Cops4Causes.org) new Golden Ticket program for LA County’s foster youth. We caught Frank between costume changes for five fab questions.

NN: You’re a legend! Do you remember the first time you put on heels?

FM: The first time I put on a pair of heels was when I dressed up like Diana Ross at 16 years old on Halloween.

NN: When did you absolutely know showbiz was the life for you?

FM: I knew Showbiz was for me when I saw how much bigger the paycheck was going to be than my original plan to become a doctor.

NN: What’s the funniest thing a fan has said or done?

FM: One time I had a fan run up to my mother (who dresses like a country western star) and ask for an autograph thinking it was me.

NN: Is there one diva (living or passed) you haven’t done – but want to? Who and why?

FM: I don’t enjoy doing impersonations, I prefer to do my own femme fatale character and the only person I will impersonate is the late great Joan Rivers.

NN: You’re bringing your show to LA for the first time – the Golden Ticket gala must be something very special. Tell us about why you choose to support it.

FM: Because back home (Las Vegas, NV) I always work with children’s charities like Make A Wish and when (Cops 4 Causes founder) Christopher Landavazo told me about all the foster children and that one out of five are LGBT, I knew I wanted to be associated with the event.

NN: What advice do you have for young performers looking to break into the biz?

FM: The ladder of success is even harder to climb especially when you’re wearing high heels but don’t let anyone hold you down.

Get Smooth, Youthful Skin with Kelley West Microderm360

How many of us have tried product after product in the quest for soft, supple and radiant skin?  We want a product that is easy to use, efficient and, I don’t know about you, but I want RESULTS!

I was recently introduced to Kelley West Microderm360 by a friend of mine and my skin has never looked better!

Many of you might be asking, “What exactly is microdermabrasion?”  It is a non-surgical, non-invasive skin resurfacing through mechanical exfoliation with vacuum suction.  All this means in layman’s terms is your skin is gently exfoliated and then the debris is sucked up with a vacuum.  And with Kelley West’s Microderm360, their patented Diamond Tip exfoliates your skin while a powerful vacuum sucks up dirt, bacteria and cleans your pores deeply and effectively.

Microdermabrasion also stimulates blood circulation and it stimulates your own body’s elastin, protein and vitamin D to rejuvenate your skin!  What is the overall effect?  Faded age spots and minimal black heads, removal of thick, uneven skin, reduction of scarring, discoloration or sun damage, improved hyperpigmentation and it also lessens the appearance of stretch marks! I also noticed a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles over time and smaller pores!  And you can use Kelley West Microderm360 all over your body, not just on your face.  Rough elbows, knees, dry legs and arms can all benefit from gentle microdermabrasion.

And Kelley West should know about skincare!  She is a licensed Medical Aesthetician and beauty/skincare expert who practices in Beverly Hills.  She has over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry and has worked on everyone from top Hollywood celebrities to everyday people like you and me!

Lipstick: gemstones to wax

Being so popular back in the “Golden” days of Hollywood, the classic red lip has made its way back into the 21st century. It’s simple, elegant, and looks great on all skin tones that makes it a great go to makeup look. Even great for those last minute looks. With the rise of this Marilyn Monroe/ Lucille Ball look, as I call it, I couldn’t help but look into the history and evolution of lipstick starting many years ago. I know I’m crazy hahahahahaha.

Starting about 5,000 years ago, ancient Filipino men and women are credited as possibly the first to invent and wear lipstick. They would crush gemstones and use it around their lips to decorate their face. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that the publicized use of lipstick became popular. Before then, lipstick was only ever used by prostitutes or dance hall girls. When Hollywood starlets Clara Bow and Louise Brooks started wearing lipstick on the movie screen the “bad girl” image of lipstick was lifted. Black lipstick was worn by actresses in horror films to add a gothic, scary feel to their characters. Now it’s one of the most popular cosmetics on the market today.

Lipstick

Lipstick

My mom told me a story about when she was younger she used to wear pink or peach colored lipstick. See teenage girls considered wearing lipstick as a sign of womanhood. Not wanting to be considered “loose” they would stear clear of the red lipstick. Elizabeth Arden was one of the first cosmetic companies to make and sell a variety of lipstick colors & she encouraged other companies to do the same. . And in 1915 lipstick started being sold in metal cylinder tubes, just like they are sold today.

I just find the evolution of beauty products fascinating. Sometimes just knowing the history behind something can make you appreciate it even more. Just think, if it wasn’t for celebrities showcasing lipstick on the big screen, we would not be able to enjoy it today. So have fun with your lipstick. Go bold, or neutral the possibilities are endless.

I will be doing some “lip” tutorials with some of my go to lip colors. Stay tuned 🙂

Looking Bikini Ready in the 40's & 50's

Weight Training
The pictures below were all taken when I was 48 to show that it is possible to have a fit healthy looking body at that age. One of the best ways to achieve this result is by weight training.
At first I wasn’t sure if I would like weight training. I had a preconception that I would end up bulky and lose my femininity. However, I couldn’t have been more wrong! I found I loved the results and fine tuning it gave to my body. It gave my muscle definition and a sleek curvature, minus the bulk! Plus, weight training raises your metabolism, so you’ll be left burning calories long after you put down the dumbbells.
Positive thinking- I’ve said this before and I will say it AGAIN: It is crucial to be positive in life and find that drive that will give you the impetus to be persistent in your goal of being and staying fit. Whatever you have to do to get there, know that it is important not to give up and know that you can do it. Remember to constantly push yourself, because it will get harder before it gets easier, and eventually becomes a way of life.DonnaSpangler©Reiff_MG_6631blue hold partial ball
Being fit is not only for the benefit of how you look, it is a healthy way to live a better and more productive life. A friend of mine once said, “When you are in shape your body becomes an awesome piece of clothing that you can wear all the time.” I really love this quote because it so true! When your body is awesome, it doesn’t matter what you wear as SO many things will look great on you. You can wear a gunny sak and still look good. I also began receiving many compliments on my body, so this gave me the encouragement to keep working on myself. I’m a huge advocate of positive reinforcement. It kept me motivated to continue. It was when I got to a certain point that I even decided to enter a bikini fitness contest. My first contest was for females over 35 in the masters class of the amateur division. This was a big deal for me because I just turned 49 years old and thought why not? If I look good at this age and have the balls to go through with it then what is there to lose? donna green bikini leaning outside
I had less than a month to prepare but decided to work hard to attain my goal to be my personal best no matter what happened. First, I went on a high protein diet where I had to eat ever few hours in order to build muscle and loose fat. I took all types of vitamins drank shakes and eat a hearty lunch and dinner. I was never hungry. The only bummer was cutting out some foods I loved but knew it was for a good reason. The first four days of the diet really went well and my stomach flattened really nicely. I have a photo shoot of this. I continued the diet till after the contest.
I then had to learn the protocol of the competition so I studied online contests. I realized that I may need a bit of coaching, so I decided to hire a coach to teach me how the girls walk in the bikini fitness contests. It was far different than I imagined. She told me I had to walk a certain way with a wiggle, to lean forward and other useful information, making me more seasoned when I reached the stage.DonnaSpangler©Reiff_MG_6584 in red
Donnas Diaries
Although I had been a model in 20s and early 30s, I had settled into a long term relationship of eating out and no exercise. I woke up one day to find that although my body was slender, I had no muscle tone. I was like a marsh mellow! I was becoming a skinny fat person (explain this)
I have been working out now for about 2 months, I went on the diet Roland Kickenger (Sexy Nutrition) put me on for about 3 weeks and feel like I am somewhat of a plateau. Every time I work out with al I feel like I am accomplishing something. We are on a deadline and I am not sure it will work but I am focused on it. It has been hard on Richie as I am not as focused on him so he has been having fits. It can be extremely difficult on a mate as it takes lots of focus and determination to get to the place that you need to when trying to compete.
I went through a time that I had to deal with depression and found the only thing that drew me out was exercise. Every time I felt like I was going down the path of darkness, I did some type of physical activity to fight it.
The bottom line is that you have to work on being fit. The more effort, the more reward. It is a lifelong venture, just like eating and breathing. You will have to work at it every day, and make serious lifestyle changes. But if you do, you will reveal a self you didn’t even know existed. A self that you are proud of. And that you can’t wait to show to the world.
You have to do the work … If there is no pain there will be no gain.

Jonathan Joseph Peters stole the show at Providence StyleWeek!

When it comes to a fast paced fashion week (8 days to be exact), Providence does an incredible job capturing all the must see styles from talented designers in the Northeast region.   The Providence Biltmore 17th floor was packed with editors, buyers, bloggers, designers, and fashionistas trying to take a glance of the Fall 2015 Collections.  I attended the last runway show and was overwhelmed with the very last designer to parade his line, Jonathan Joseph Peters.  Quirky, romantic, lovey dovey but powerful collection called “Modern Madonnas” exhausted my heart.   The models wore intricate, stunning headpieces created by House of Cach.  I was inquisitive to know more about Jonathan and his energy of imagination.  After all the hustle and bustle was over, I had the opportunity to interview Jonathan.

Me:  What is the inspiration behind this collection “Modern Madonnas” ?

Jonathan:  The inspiration behind this line was Renaissance and Rococo art.  It posed the question-if the female figures in these two dimensional art works came to life and had to navigate the real world, what would they wear?  How would they accessorize?  My feeling is that they would be somewhere between the excessive embellishment of the period and becoming infatuated with modern cuts, silhouettes, and styling.

Me:  Would you say there is a different customer for each line you create?

Jonathan:  My designs are always bold, expressive, and on the risky or avant-garde side so that remains constant about my customer.  However, I do find myself exploring different characters each season.  Some are bold and quirky while others are delicate and romantic. I like doing so many different things that I am not ready to focus completely.  I’m still playing to a certain extent.

Me:  What does fashion mean to you?

Jonathan:  Fashion means a lot of different things to me.  Fashion is art, expression, and something that is literally very close to an individual.  It is the only art form that we carry around with us daily and wrap ourselves in.  Beyond that-fashion needs a large dose of sense of humor and imagination or else it just becomes “clothing”.  Fashion is the step beyond the basic utilitarian clothing we wear.  It’s an unknown, unusual, aspect, almost a feeling, that can polarize peoples’ opinions about what they are viewing or wearing.

Me:  How is Providence, Rhode Island motivating you or are you motivating Providence, Rhode Island to become one of the fashion cities?

Jonathan:  I am motivated by the act of creation-not a specific place necessarily.  I would like to think that Providence will become a notable fashion city.  I believe that if we-as creatives-move forward as an unit instead of striking out on our own we can create a larger impact that will grant us all success in the long run.

Me:  Looking into your crystal ball, what do you see for the future for Jonathan Joseph Peters?

Jonathan:  At some point, I will have to splinter off a line that is produced for me.  I have a feeling that I will create this line along side of my custom work at first so I can continue to hand make bespoke pieces for my clients.  That is my short term goal.  More long term-world domination!!!!!!!

Have some Pony Tail Fun with GOODY

unnamed

I recently got my hair cut to shoulder length and donated the remainder of the cut hair (over 10 inches) to Locks of Love.  I have had some of a difficult time getting used to it, especially wearing it off of my face in a ponytail.  I am not used to the look of a short ponytail. What I have been doing is curling my hair then putting it into a pony tail. I think it looks better curled for a ponytail look than straight at this length.  I got a bunch of colored hair elastics so I could brighten up the look and not feel so boring in a short ponytail. I use the hair elastics from a 30 piece Goody set.  I like that I can wear one or more and mix and match.
unnamed-1
Today when this picture was taken, I wore only one color but other times I have worn up to three at once. I love the polka dot ones.  There is 10X more in the package that I have so I will always have enough.  I lose them a lot when I take them out from day to night or to change my look at my friends house or put them on for gym class. You can get them at  drugstores or Walmart store. They are easy to find.

Expand your awareness regarding skin cancer and melanoma in a very informative interview with Joel Schwartz, DO

Lockup_ICS_800x108px

Recently held, World Cancer Day 2015 took ” a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer.” I was thrilled when the opportunity came about for me to ask some questions, and get the viewpoint regarding skin cancer and melanoma from:
Joel M. Schwartz, DO
Board Certified in Radiation Oncology
Illinois Cancer Specialists, a practice in The US Oncology Network

http://illinoiscancerspecialists.com/physicians/profile/joel-schwartz-d.o/

Here is my interview with Dr.Joel M.Schwartz:

#1: VICKI: Dr. Schwartz, a lot of people want to know: what is melanoma and who is prone to getting this type of cancer?

DR. SCHWARTZ: Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. There are about 120,000 new cases of melanoma each year and melanoma kills an estimated 9,710 people in the U.S. annually. These tumors originate in the pigment-producing melanocytes. Melanomas often resemble moles and some develop from moles.

There are several factors that can put someone at a higher risk of developing a melanoma.
Early sun exposure – a research study involving nurses reported in 2014 found that white women who get five or more blistering sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 have an 80 percent increased risk for melanoma.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/behindtheheadlines/news/2014-06-04-just-five-sunburns-increase-your-cancer-risk/

Tanning bed usage – A 2014 study estimated that more than 400,000 cases of skin cancer may be related to indoor tanning in the United States each year—causing 245,000 basal cell carcinomas, 168,000 squamous cell carcinomas, and 6,000 melanomas. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24477278
Moles – atypical moles, (also known as dysplastic nevi) can be precursors to melanoma, the more moles you have, the greater your risk for melanoma.
Skin type – Fair-skinned people are at much greater risk than those with darker skin. This is because darker skinned people produce more melanin, the pigment that gives color to skin and hair, and protects the skin from damage from ultraviolet radiation.
Eye and hair color – people with blue or green eyes and red hair or blond hair are at increased risk for developing melanoma.
Genetics – About one in every 10 patients diagnosed with the disease has a family member with a history of melanoma. Each person with a first-degree relative diagnosed with melanoma has a 50 percent greater chance of developing the disease than people who do not have a family history of the disease.
A person with both an atypical mole and a family history of melanoma is at “high risk” for melanoma.

#2: VICKI: Other than melanoma, are there other types of skin cancers people should be aware of? How common are they?

DR. SCHWARTZ: The most common types of skin cancers are Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (SCC). They are much more common than melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer with an estimated 2.8 million diagnosed annually in the U.S. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the 2nd most common form of skin cancer. An estimated 700,000 cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S. About 2% percent of SCC patients – between 3,900 and 8,800 people – died from the disease in the U.S. in 2012
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23375456

#3: VICKI What are the common warning signs and symptoms that people should bring to their doctor’s attention?

DR. SCHWARTZ: For melanoma, there are the classic “ABCDE signs.”
This includes moles with:
Asymmetry
Uneven Borders
Multiple Colors
A Diameter greater than an eraser
and
An Evolving or changing appearance.
Also, any mole that appears to be different or is changing differently than other moles, may be a warning sign for melanoma (this is referred to as the “Ugly Duckling” sign).

With regard to BCC and SCC, these cancers often appear as:
An open sore that does not heal
A shiny-pearly bump
or
A pink bump with edges that are rolled in appearance.

#4 VICKI: Why do malignant skin lesions and other skin spots seem to suddenly appear as people get older?

DR.SCHWARTZ: As people age, two things happen. First, the body becomes less able to police itself and correct genetic mistakes (i.e. mutations) which occur all the time as the body is making new cells. Since the body of an older person is less savvy at correcting these genetic mistakes, they are more likely to survive, become incorporated into our bodies and develop into cancers.
In addition, sun cumulative exposure is a risk factor for skin cancer. The longer a person lives, the more sun exposure he/she has and the possibility of developing skin cancer increases as well.

#5 VICKI: Other than regular use of sun protection, are there any other preventatives that we can do to lessen the chance of getting skin cancer?

DR. SCHWARTZ: This is a very interesting topic since risky and voluntary over-exposure to the sun (or a tanning bed) is very preventable. This is particularly concerning regarding teenagers and young adults. With regards to the prevention of skin cancer, I believe society has a real responsibility to help individuals enhance their self-esteem and thereby help people appreciate their unique, tremendous inner value.
There is a growing body of evidence that for many people, tanning has become an addiction.
Like other addictions, it is often associated with:
A”high”
A desire to escape
and
A dissatisfaction with one’s self-image
http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/tanning/tanning-addiction

Research suggests that this self-destructive behavior (i.e. excessive sun or tanning bed exposure) is correlated with low self-esteem scores and an unhealthy self-image.
http://www.mmu.ac.uk/news/news-items/2948/

By helping people improve their self-esteem, an individual’s obsession with a “beautiful dark tan” will hopefully be replaced by solid feelings of inner self-worth and a life of purpose and meaning.
As I see it, improving someone’s self-esteem is an important avenue of skin cancer prevention.

#6 VICKI: That certainly is a very interesting point, Dr.Schwartz! Are there any new medical breakthroughs in dealing with melanomas or skin cancers?

DR. SCHWARTZ: For a long time, we have known that early-stage melanoma can usually be cured with surgery. With regard to more advanced and metastatic melanomas, the prognosis had been much more bleak.

In the last few years however, we have seen enormous breakthroughs in the area of new pharmaceuticals for advanced melanoma. This includes drugs which are targeted to specific genetic mutations (i.e. BRAF inhibitors and MEK inhibitors) which attempt to “turn off” the growth process within melanoma tumors.

Another group of new drugs are “immunotherapy” drugs. These medicines (T-cell simulators and anti-PD1 agents) try to activate and recruit the body’s own immune system to recognize and to destroy melanoma tumors.

In the area of BCC and SCC, surgery has also been the traditional mainstay of therapy (with a 90-98% cure rate). An exciting new area of treatment for BCC and SCC is non-surgical Skin HDR radiotherapy. Skin HDR treats BCC and SCC with a tiny radioactive seed that briefly rests on top of the skin cancer.
These treatments are:
Fast (5-10 min) they are
Precisely targeted and very effective (they have a 90-95% cure rate)
Since these treatments are non-invasive, there are no surgical scars, they require no anesthesia, and there is no need for subsequent plastic surgery to repair a hole left by prior cancer surgery.

Recent research indicates that surgeons commonly underestimate the importance which patients attribute to their appearance. This same researcher has found that scars (especially on the face) tended to have a negative impact on patients’ psychosocial functioning.
www.healio.com/aesthetics/practice-management/news/online/%7B655b33f8-1070-4cdd-b5bd-07500c98a1c2%7D/surgeons-should-take-psychosocial-impact-of-scarring-from-skin-cancer-surgery-into-account

I believe that surgery will always be used for the treatment of BCC and SCC. In the current era of “minimally invasive procedures”, Skin HDR offers people an effective and less disfiguring skin cancer treatment option.

#7 VICKI: Do you recommend that your family physician, internist or PCP provide regular skin check-ups? Should you ask for a referral if they do not provide them, and how often should you have your skin checked?

DR. SCHWARTZ:
Patients with:
Multiple moles
Atypical moles
A history of melanoma
A 1st degree relative with melanoma
or
A known genetic predisposition for melanoma should perform self-examinations and should be checked regularly by a Dermatologist. Dermatologists have special tools and training to track and follow patients at high risk for skin cancers. These tools include Dermatoscopy and Total Body Photography.

At this point, the CDC and the US Preventative Task Force have concluded that there is not enough evidence to recommend for or against routine screening (total body examination by a doctor) to find skin cancers early..

In my experience, patient’s always know their bodies better than anyone else. If a person feels that he/she has a skin lesion that has changed or is acting strangely, I believe that one should trust their instincts and have it evaluated.

#8 VICKI: Is there anything else that you’d like to share? This a very important and interesting topic.

DR. SCHWARTZ: Medicine is entering a new era that demands a more holistic approach to patient care. The field of skin cancer treatment is certainly no different. Physicians need to use the best, state-of-the-art-treatments to target and cure skin cancers. This is just the tip of the iceberg however. We also need to be looking for the root causes and behaviors that promote skin cancers. We need to spend more time focused on “preventative medicine” (including sunscreen education, tanning bed education, taking preventative medicines such as aspirin, as well as providing psychological support and addiction support to our patients when necessary). We need to do dietary assessments of our patients and provide advice for supplementation (i.e. Vitamin D supplementation) when necessary.
http://consumer.healthday.com/general-health-information-16/aspirin-news-46/common-painkillers-may-help-prevent-certain-skin-cancers-694783.html#.VLv0REYj3oc.twitter

In addition, patients are looking for treatments that are less invasive and less destructive. Just as the lumpectomy has allowed women with breast cancer to avoid the disfigurement of a mastectomy, some patients with skin cancer will benefit from the completely non-surgical treatment delivered with Skin HDR. I believe that a holistic approach in medicine should attempt to leave every person as whole as possible.

We know that skin cancer patients aren’t always given all of their treatment options.
